This first episode is with somebody I know well... Rus Bradburd is a American basketball coach who has worked with some legendary NCAA coaches like Don Haskins and Lou Henson throughout his time as an assistant coach and recruiter in UTEP and New Mexico State.  Years later, he travelled to Ireland to coach the Tralee Tigers and learn to play the fiddle, while writing a book. Here, he shares with me some of the great coaching lessons, experiences and anecdotes he picked up along the way that should prove informative for coaches out there, no matter your sport.   Also, I've set up this podcast with a dual purpose in mind, firstly to provide some thoughtful debate for coaches, but I've also linked up with Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin, to try and help raise even a small amount of much needed money for them. Covid 19 continues to have a hugely negative impact on their ability to raise funds in the ways they normally do, so if you found some value in the podcast, it would be great if you could donate anything, no matter how small to Temple Street Children's Foundation through the link here: https://bit.ly/39857sS   If you enjoyed this episode, you can like, share and follow the podcast. There's no short or simple description of Rus Bradburd. Wins a national championship as a little-used reserve on the legendary North Park College team in the late 70's, only to be cut as a senior. Desperate to stay in the game, he scatters resumes around the country. Spends several years as assistant coach to the legendary Don Haskins at UTEP, where he successfully lands the talented Tim Hardaway. He learned as well under Coach Lou Henson at New Mexico State, before ditching - so he thinks- the basketball for the pen and the fiddle - the Irish fiddle, that is. He falls in love with Ireland (not the first fella to do so, by the way), launches his writing career, and is a currently a Fulbright-awarded lecturer in creative non-fiction at New Mexico St. That's some journey. The recent author of All the Dreams We've Dreamed takes us through his career, and highlights the plight of coach Shawn Harrington (main character in the book) and his efforts to help Shawn gain independence.

(Reposting from 3/24/18) In Episode 9, I veer off course from the usual Lobo hoops podcasts and talk to the author of "All the Dreams We've Dreamed" and the central figure of that book, former NMSU Aggie point guard Shawn Harrington, who in 2014 was shot while taking his daughter to school in the west side of Chicago. Bradburd, an NMSU professor and former Aggies basketball coach who recruited Shawn to Las Cruces in the 1990's, talks about why he wrote the book and his relationship with his former player. Shawn walks us through that tragic morning and talks about what he hopes people take from the book. I am reposting this on Oct. 3, 2018 because it was originally posted under an Albuquerque Journal account and this will add it to all the proper channels for my podcast.

Rus Bradburd joins us to talk about his book, All the Dreams We've Dreamed: A story of Hoops and Handguns on Chicago's West Side. It is a story about sports, coaching, college recruitment, schools, gun violence and real folks, like Shawn Harrington. Shawn went to Chicago's storied Marshall High School.  Harrington, 41, was a Division II All-American at Northwest Missouri State, where he landed after playing at Mineral Area (Iowa) Junior College, then New Mexico State following graduation from Marshall in 1993.  His career as a basketball coach was cut short by a bullet as he covered his daughter and saved her life and who now sits in a wheel chair, tells as much about this city’s Black flight and transformation to a city for the rich, as any sociologist’s academic study.

Episodes 254: BOOM! We have a fantastic show for you this week! Coach recaps the NCAA Men’s & Women’s Final Four from the bad -- Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan’s reaction and the game management of South Carolina’s head coach, Dawn Staley -- to the good -- UConn’s Moriah Jefferson and Duke’s Tyus Jones. Dave dissects the unfiltered opinions of Charles Barkley and the recent incident of officer Michael Slager shooting Walter Scott in the back. A dynamic duo of basketball knowledge: Rus Bradburd, the author of 40 Minutes of Hell, and Shaun Harrington, 2015 National STUDENT-Athlete Day Giant Steps Coach of the Year, Shawn Harrington. Harrington grew up in Chicago and played a small part in Hoop Dreams, having played at Marshall High School in the windy city. He was also Bradburd’s first real recruit at New Mexico State.

This time on Peace Talks Radio, how sports can be used to point to peace. While sports headlines these days are as much about pro football players facing domestic violence,  child abuse, shooting crime charges and crippling game injuries, there are still examples of the potential for sports to bring together athletes from all ethnicities, nationalities and sexual preferences to bond and celebrate the fun, skill and mutual respect of sport.  We spotlight an annual sporting event that on the surface may seem sort of small – a two day summer basketball camp in the border city of El Paso, Texas.  But the hearts behind the camp seem sort of large and the perspective the camp offers is sort of large too.  Carol Boss talked with Rus Bradburd, one of the directors of "Basketball In The Barrio." Bradburd is a former collegiate basketball player and coach who both loves sports, sees some potential for good in it, but also doesn't especially like where sports has come to sit in the order of priorities.  He was led to use sports as an avenue to teach other lessons in establishing his annual camp. Also, we visit with Doug Harris, the executive director of the Athletes United for Peace, the camp's parent organization, about other initiatives that use sports to promote unity, diplomacy and peace.   Plus, a conversation with former collegiate basketball star and NBA player, Len Elmore, who also believes in the uniting power of sports, but wishes its pro athletes would speak up MORE often on social justice and peace issues. Carol Boss and Paul Ingles host.
