Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia are two of the most surprising contributors to Black radio. This Jewish and Puerto Rican duo turned Columbia University's college radio station WCKR into hip-hop's first radio-safe haven. Every Thursday from 1am -to 5am, The Stretch and Bobbito Show was a place where up-and-coming rappers like Nas, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, and Big L played their latest records or showed off their lyrical freestyles. In the process, a format was born that hip-hop shows imitated for years to come. These pioneers of hip-hop had one nemesis…the birth of Hot97, hip-hop's very first radio station dedicated to only rap. Not only did Stretch and Bobbito survive but they thrived and left an undeniable legacy on Black radio.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In part two of New Music Seminar MC Battle For World Supremacy, our last episode for season 2, we focus on the years; 1993 and 1994! I recount the stories I heard about 1993 with MF Grimm, Mad Skillz, and the '93 champion, Supernatural. As for '94, I explain how my writing for local Chicago publication The Flypaper, created a lane for me to have some “involvement” and a front-row seat to many of the key happenings at the seminar that year, including getting a chance to interview Bobbito Garcia, The Artifacts, Count Bass D, Hard 2 Obtain, Zev Love X, and Muddbones (Cage and Masai Bey) for an article in The Flypaper, which never came out, and ultimately inspired Caught In The Middle magazine, that I started planning with J-bird only weeks after the seminar. And, I share the memories of being at a showcase that had Indigenous Theory, Keith Murray, Rampage The Last Boy Scout, Notorious B.I.G, Craig Mack, and Original Flavor with Jay-Z. Plus, some insight on the actual MC battle itself, which was won by Judgemental from Chicago, who I was in town with. It's an action-packed episode!! From 1990 to 1998, WKCR broadcast The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show, hosted by DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia. The show served as an alternative to commercial hip hop radio, airing mostly obscure, unsigned artists, a number of whom would later dominate the hip hop scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The show has been credited with introducing the world to Biggie Smalls, Eminem, Jay-Z, Big L, Big Pun, Fat Joe, Wu Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, and the Fugees, among others.[51][52][53] The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show was voted the "best hip-hop show of all time" by The Source in 1998.[54] WKCR's transmitter was destroyed on September 11, 2001, when a hijacked plane destroyed the North Tower of the World Trade Center. For the next two years, the station broadcast from its backup transmitter atop Carman Hall. Its range was severely reduced, its signal barely reaching past a 20-mile radius until 2003, when the station was able to set up a new antenna at 4 Times Square, where it remains today.[55] PICTURE: https://tunein.com/radio/WKCR-FM-899-s30119/ LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzyAwZGTgAdonBKhTxUiC2Q

As hip-hop found its rhythm in the late 80s and early 90s, artists had to grapple with the scars of violence the drug war was causing within the community, using music videos like “Self Destruction” to hold each other accountable, and trying not to unravel in the face of what was happening in the streets. This is also when hip-hop began to expand outside of New York, to Los Angeles, where California's own policies and structures were shaping the rise of gangsta rap. These movements culminated in the so-called “golden age” of hip-hop, a time of maturing and sophistication in the music. But along with that maturity came uncertainty from national leaders, and a new wave of commercialization that threatened to unravel this political artform. On this episode of “Street Disciples,” Trymaine Lee hears from: Daddy-O from the hip-hop group Stetsasonic, rapper and producer The D.O.C., Video Music Box's Ralph McDaniels, radio host Bobbito Garcia, writer Nelson George, and journalist Davey D.Note: this episode contains several instances of profanity. The world of hip-hop would surely be a tad bit poorer without the contributions of Stretch Armstrong. Co-host of the now-legendary Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show alongside Bobbito Garcia, the groundbreaking DJ and radio-host introduced a large section of America and the world to hip-hop. His contributions helped propel an underground genre into the mainstream and changed the map of music forever. During his first visit to India, Stretch stopped by at the Boxout.fm HQ for an informal chat with Diggy Dang that covered his roots in radio, some of his most memorable musical experiences going back to his early teenage years, and a whole lot more.

Each month this year, we're going to revisit an episode from the 260+ episodes in the AirGo Archives and bring that conversation back to the forefront. This month, we're revisiting our convo with Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia, the legendary duo behind the underground radio show that first brought many of hip hop's biggest stars onto the airwave. Dame and Kiss had the chance to sit down with Stretch and Bob back in 2015, when AirGo was still a baby and the brilliant documentary Stretch and Bobbito: Radio that Changed Lives first came to Chicago. It was a bit of a funhouse mirror as the four of them talked hip hop, independent radio-making, classic 90s rap tales, and finding one's place in the culture. Since 2015, the duo has hosted several podcasts (including What's Good for NPR), released a wonderful album together, and continued to rock with each other tough through thick and thin. This week the big issue we talked about were the murders via law enforcement of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd by law enforcement, how rapidly the public has responded to this latest round of police brutality from regular folks on the ground to those in power positions (especially with COVID-19 still being a thing that hasn't even wanted yet), the steady feelings of frustration & anger with these events feeling damned near constant with Black America, the role of agent provocateurs at the current protests, where do we go from here and more. We also talked a bit about the Jeffrey Epstein "Filthy Rich" documentary on Netflix and a few other random things before getting into the music mixes. On this episode we explore the journeys of 2 distinguished gentlemen from the We W.I.L.L. Thru Sports Program. Our first guest was raised on the upper west side as a member of an 8 sibling family. Nothing came easy, but there was never a dull moment. He graduated from Norman Thomas H.S. and made his way to Lehman College where for the first time he walked on and played organized basketball. He flipped that into a couple of FREE99 degrees and the inspiration to one day establish his own non profit now named We W.I.L.L. Thru Sports. Today as the founder of We W.I.L.L. coach Henry Perez develops groups of children and young adults through expert basketball training and a variety of personal development programs. Our next guest earned the respect of his peers early and as such was given private access to his neighborhood public park where he spent countless hours refining his shooting stroke. He spent time busting that ass all across NYC. Often you'd catch him playing alongside Hoops & Hip Hop icon Bobbito Garcia. When High School hit he attended and played at La Salle Academy. Then he'd go on to the University of Nebraska to play D1 ball and then professionally in Italy. Today "Pasta" (as they call him) is the associate head coach at Riverdale H.S. and both a board member and coach at We W.I.L.L. Thru Sports. On this episode of Dribble N' Dimes we hear the stories of Henry Perez and Joe "Pasta" Cifone. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast and tell a friend! There are some highly advantageous options coming down the pipeline, but also a lot of problems to get worked out along the way.Lasting Grace: Remembering Brian Doyle - 16:21Friends of the late, much-missed writer Brian Doyle will gather this Thursday, Sept. 21, at First Congregational Church in Portland to read and laugh and cry and remember. The program is a who’s who of Oregon literary greats: Barry Lopez, Kim Stafford, Kathleen Dean Moore, as well as friends from afar like David James Duncan. Literary Arts will record the event, and we look forward to bringing you some of the readings in weeks to come.Ages and Ages Sings Songs for Disaster - 17:35On Sept. 23, a brand new music festival will bring some of the region’s hottest bands to one of its coolest locales: the Oregon Coast. Paying tribute to the nearby Haystack Rock, the Stackstock Music Festival in Cannon Beach is being headlined by the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, Pure Bathing Culture, and our favorite purveyor of infectious hand claps, Ages and Ages. To celebrate, we're listening back to a live session we and opbmusic recorded with them around the release of their 2016 album, “Something to Ruin." It's themes of gentrification, displacement, natural disaster, the end of civilization, and how to weather the chaos seem even more appropriate now then when it came out. You can watch the opbmusic session here.Master Printer Frank Janzen Looks Back On 16 Years at Crow's Shadow - 27:45Frank Janzen collaborated with Oregon’s best artists for 16 years — everyone from established masters like Rick Bartow to rising stars like Samantha Wall. Now he’s getting ready to hang up his spurs as the master printmaker at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts. Janzen shares what it's like to collaborate with creative minds and the stories behind the works that will make up Crow's Shadow's 25th Anniversary Retrospective, opening at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem this weekend.Marie Watt Explores Comfort and Community through Blankets - 38:41Marie Watt makes a power play with a new exhibition at PDX Contemporary. She’s created big installations before, stacking blankets high to invoke tribal tradition and a place on the continuum of history, but her new work involves 20-foo-long rafts of fabric, overstitched with giant wolves and a forest of phrases invoking comfort and connection. She tells us about the sewing circles that made it happen, and the challenges of realizing ideas at such a large scale.Deer Tick Goes Acoustic - 35:06When you’re a raucous, high-energy live band known for living loud, sometimes the scariest thing you can do is slow your roll. Deer Tick turns down the volume and goes acoustic for one of their two new studio albums and tour.

For today's episode, I talk to my main man Bobbito Garcia. When I was growing up, I watched videos of Bobbito with the And1 mixtapes, the Nike commercials, and even "Bobbito's basics to boogie" that they promoted on NBA.comTV. When I came to new york, Dime magazine hooked me up with him, and I have been attending his open runs in new york city ever since he invited me to the first one. I can't name all his accomplishments and all he's done because it's so much, but this episode will be focused on his new york city streetball tournament called full court 21. It's a type of game where it's every man or woman for themselves. If you score a basket you get 2 points, then you have a chance to hit 3 shots from the top of the key for free, with the game to 21. there are a lot of other rules, so if you want to learn more about it just to go fullcourt21nyc.com. Also bobbito just turned 50, so bobbito, happy birthday man, you rock. .
Legendary DJ, author, and filmmaker Bobbito Garcia stops by to talk hip hop, music culture and much more.
BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #JohnRobinson interview session! Good people - this is FAMILY right here. Meeks and Doe both were fortunate enough to become friends with the man also known as Sci of Scienz of Life during his stint in ATL in the early 2000s. This interview kicks off on a particularly interesting note given JR attended the Phife memorial @ The Apollo last week, so we were able to get his perspective on the event, as well as what Tribe meant to him growing up in NYC during the #ATCQ hey day. While we’re in the wayback machine, we talk about his introduction to the Knicks and jazz at an early age, the formation of Scienz of Life and linking with Bobbito Garcia during the Fondle ‘Em era. We talk about the move down South to ATL alongside Big Juss of Company Flow and the fledgling Submerse Music label, MF Doom stories and how all of us influenced one another during those integral years in the ATL hip-hop underground. We talk about the new new too, like the lifestyle brand Water The Plants, a series of EP’s John is dropping with the legendary A.G. of DITC, and his recent splash in the podcast world with Epic Brunch. There’s a LOT we’re just can’t fit in the description, so let’s not waste any more time - just hit play, listen and lock in to what is always that #smithsonian #grade // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #dj #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #NYC #JERSEY #LA #WORLDWIDE Recorded live April 10, 2016 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks
Today we pay homage to two departed legends of music. First, we have Don Cheadle, star and director of the Miles Davis biopic “Miles Ahead.” Then, DJ Bobbito Garcia remembers his friend Malik Taylor, AKA Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest who passed away last week. Dave’s ‘Choice Words’ are call for NBA Commissioner to move the 2017 All-Star weekend away from Charlotte in light of a recent North Carolina anti-trans law, and a somber ‘Just Stand Up’ goes to Dave’s departed friend Kevin Turner. The former Alabama and NFL running back lived with dignity and strength before succumbing to ALS a week ago.Special thanks: Mike Sheils, Simona Noce, Maya Anand, Donna Daniels, Kathryn Tyus-Adair, Jennifer Allen, Mike Nasella, WPFW 89.3 FM.—‘Miles Ahead’ film: http://sonyclassics.com/milesaheadZirin: The NBA Needs to Move the 2017 All-Star Game FromCharlotte. There's a small door on 115th Street and Broadway in New York City. For nearly a decade, hip hop's royalty passed through the door and climbed a fluorescent-lit stairway to WKCR, Columbia University's community radio station, and dapped up kings of the underground Bobbito Garcia and Stretch Armstrong. The two New York natives introduced the world to an unsigned Nas, Jay Z, Biggie Smalls, Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, and so many more, while creating a meaningful, radical platform for the largest youth culture in the history of the world. On this very special New Year's episode, Stretch and Bob chop it up with Damon and Daniel in promotion of their transcendant new film Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives. The interview aired 12/31/15 on WHPK 88.5FM Music from this week's show: New Chapter - @MonteBooker Stretch and Bobbito Freestyle - Big L and Jay Z Stretch and Bobbito Freestyle - Black Thought, Common, Pharoahe Monch Time's Up - O.C.
Line up : Freddie Joachim, Bobbito Garcia, Dj Babu and Rakaa
