Every once in a while something so remarkable happens that it jumps past all the other very important events of the day and becomes banner news. So while the Oregon men are moving through the Big Ten tournament and two in-state women's teams just battled for an NCAA Tournament berth, Bill Oram and Brenna Greene absolutely had to start this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast with a thorough breakdown of Natalie Zito, nee Gilbert's, surprise appearance to sing the national anthem in front of ex-Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks on Wednesday night. While the Blazers have been on an upswing in the second half of the season, the franchise's idea to reunite Gilbert and Cheeks may have been the season's best moment. Also discussed on this week's episode: • Combined with Bill Walton's tribute night 72 hours earlier, this has been a big week for Blazers game ops • Bill describes other memorable national anthem performances, including a notable freeze-job by an Oscar nominee • Oregon State's win over Portland in the WCC women's title game was a celebration of Oregon hoops • The Oregon men further burnished their March Madness resume with a win over Indiana on the Hoosiers' home turf Learn more about your ad choices. This week we chat to Maura Cheeks, who has written pieces and columns all over the place, being featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic and the Harvard Business Review. Her debut novel is called 'Acts of Forgiveness', and is out on the 13th February. It tells the story of Willie Revel who gives up a career as journalist in New York to help run her family's struggling company in Philadelphia. When the President prepares to pass a bill allowing black families to claim reparations if they can prove they're descendants of slaves, Willie delves into the family history and learns much more than she expected. We chat about the importance of subject, how writing columns as a journalist changes what you do as an author, and her method of free-writing. Her dad is NBA legend Maurice Cheeks, currently assistant coach of the Chicago Bulls, and we discuss whether growing up with successful parents has any impact on your own quest for success. This week's episode is sponsored by 'Who is the Cheese Wire Killer?', about a 1983 unsolved murder, one of Scotland's grimest... and you can be part of the live investigation. The 1980s NBA was dominated by the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, but 1 team managed to have a more dominant title run than either of them: the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers! Philly's own Tanya Morris of Mom Your Business joins me to talk about one of the league's most forgotten championship teams! Tanya tells me how her hometown team caught her attention initially by acquiring the legendary Julius Erving. We also discuss the weird circumstances that led to Dr. J going to the 76ers and his immediate impact! While the Doctor was certainly the biggest name on the team, the 76ers slowly surrounded him with an incredible supporting cast of Hall of Fame-level talent. Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney, and more played important roles for the perennial Eastern Conference contenders, but they are mostly forgotten today so we show them some love! Speaking of underrated stars, Tanya talks about what it was like when the 76ers got the final piece of their championship puzzle, Moses Malone. She tells me how great he was prior to coming to Philly, how the city reacted to his acquisition, and how the move compares to Kevin Durant joining the Golden State Warriors. Then, after years of getting close but coming up short, the 76ers have a historic regular season and playoff run that leads to an NBA title! Tanya talks about the excitement of watching that in real-time, how it felt when the final buzzer sounded, and her level of optimism about the team moving forward. Unfortunately, that core group of 76ers never reached that level again. We talk about the injuries and bad moves that led to the franchise going from potential dynasty to one of the worst in the league. We couldn't talk about Philadelphia 76ers basketball without talking about Allen Iverson. Clearly, AI was an incredible player and cultural icon, but Tanya tells me just how much love the city has for him! We also talk about what it was like being in the city as he led the team back to the NBA Finals. Tanya also tells me about some other Philly basketball legends! We finish up the basketball talk with the current 76ers squad. Has the team met expectations for this season? Are they headed in the right direction? Tanya also gives a detailed breakdown of Joel Embiid's game. Finally, Tanya tells me about the great work she's doing at Mom Your Business! She explains how she's working to address poverty in the Black community, the extra obstacles facing Black entrepreneurs, and why the success of Black women leads to the success of everyone! Adam Sandler plays as Stanley, a top NBA talent scout for the 76er's who is down on his luck following a string of unfortunate events. As chance would have it, Stanley finds a diamond in the rough with an amateur basketball player from Spain named Bo Cruz, played by Juancho Hernangomez. Sandler once again proves his dramatic acting chops in Hustle, a new, Netflix sports drama that might just be the most enjoyable basketball movie that I have ever watched. Hustle is filled to the brim with cameos from some of the greatest names in the sport, but the highly entertaining film would stand tall even without all of the familiar faces. It is obvious that a lot of love and care for the game went into Hustle which is produced by Sandler who is a fanatic of the game, and Lebron James who needs no introduction. The struggle is real for Bo who has never played beyond the amateur level despite his love for the game, and this is shown in a way that feels believable to anyone who even remotely comprehends the extremely difficult path that must bet taken in order to reach the pros. Bo is knocked down time and time again before finally finding his redemption, and it was refreshing (albeit nerve wracking) to not know if Bo would truly make it. I know, I know, the good guy always get his in the end, right? That is why Hustle is such a great sports movie, the sense that Bo may not actually attain his dream. Each roadblock faced felt like a genuine occurrence that is seen in everyday sports, while each successful turn for Bo felt the same. Hustle is a great movie and I look forward to watching it again.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Co się wydarzy, jeśli do finalisty NBA dodać MVP ligi? Powstanie jeden z najlepszych zespołów w historii NBA. Kiedy Philadelphia 76ers przekonali latem 1982 roku Mosesa Malone'a do zmiany klubu, cała liga wydała z siebie westchnienie zniechęcenia, a niektórzy gracze już wtedy zaczęli gratulować Sixers tytułu. Nie pomylili się. Malone, Julius Erving, Andrew Toney, Maurice Cheeks i Bobby Jones zdominowali playoffy i zgodnie z zapowiedzią tego pierwszego dokonali tego w imponującym stylu. Big news around the MLB off-season as the Mets get a new owner in billionaire Steve Cohen. The White Sox bring back Tony La Russa to manage the ball club after not managing since 2011! Cubs do not bring back Jon Lester with team option. The Bulls fill their assistant positions with the hiring of Maurice Cheeks and Josh Longstaff. The NFL is at it's midway point and there are many key matchups that could hurt teams in the playoff hunt. Saints vs Bucs matchup very important for both teams! Antonio Brown will make his debut that game and could play 10-30 snaps.

We strongly advise you to listen to Jail Blazers (Part 1, 2 & 3) before moving forward to this episode. Eric, Zach and Craig consider this season to be "the eye of the hurricane" that really sets the table for the upcoming disasters. We break down the 2000-2001 Trail Blazer seasons and discuss all of the distractions within the organization that keeps building on to this "Jail Blazer" image. We discuss a lot of of news stories, specific games, locker room/player drama, and reference some incredible information from the book Jail Blazers written by Kerry Eggers (a fantastic read by the way!). We hope this episode provides a lot of laughs but we also hope this gives you an understanding of just how dysfunctional this team was from a players, coaches, management and fan base standpoint. Was this organization deserving of being known as the Jail Blazers or was this completely overblown by media and fans? Our goals is to lay out all of the information available and try to decide. ENJOY!
Eva wanted to take a break from the Pandemic-related content for the week, and share an incredibly touching story that has recently resurfaced. It’s the story of Natalie Gilbert, who in 1993 at the age of 13, forgot the lyrics of the National Anthem in front of 20,000 fans at a NBA playoff game. The biggest moment of Natalie’s life quickly became the most terrifying. The whole stadium went silent -- yet one man, Maurice Cheeks, came to Natalie’s rescue and exhibited an act of kindness that forever changed Natalie’s life. What’s even more remarkable is how Natalie did not let a performer's worst nightmare destroy her dream, and thanks to Maurice Cheeks she even now describes the experience as “perfect.” We are thrilled to share this feel-good story of kindness during these challenging times. We also encourage you to watch the full news segment, which we linked to in the show notes at DreamBigPodcast.com/198

We look at how Julius Erving’s game and persona evolved during the late 1970s and early 1980s years with the Philadelphia 76ers, where they reached the NBA Finals three times before finally winning a championship in 1983 with Moses Malone. We are joined by frequent guest and pro-basketball historian Curtis Harris @ProHoopsHistory of ProHoopsHistory.com. We discuss how Erving personified ‘70s cool from his personal style to his flare on the court, how he saw himself as an artist on the court and how he tried to blend the playground game with team basketball, how the Nets were unable to afford his contract after the NBA-ABA merger and ended up trading him to the Sixers just before the 1977 season, how the Sixers were “the team that won't shut up” and how they were seen as a group of playground players, how Erving tried to fit himself into a star-laden Sixers team (with George McGinnis, World B. Free, Doug Collins, Darryl Dawkins, Joe Bryant, Henry Bibby and Caldwell Jones), how Erving had to prove himself all over again in a skeptical NBA, how his stardom and flare influenced the NBA, how the NBA began to incorporate aspects of Erving and the ABA into its marketing through the early 1980s, whether Erving changed the NBA or whether the NBA changed Erving, how the Sixers were able to acquire MVP Moses Malone and how Erving found out while traveling in China, how Erving and Malone blended their talents for a magical 1983 season, and how the Sixers’ championship with the last gasp for the ABA generation before the NBA would fully become Magic & Bird’s league and much more!
