This week, Gene HackMarch continues with an outstanding acting showdown between two of the all-time greats of American screen acting, as our man Gene stands tete-a-tete with Denzel down in the briny deep with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. It's 1995's Crimson Tide, directed by Tony Scott, featuring script punch-up from Quentin Tarantino, and starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, George Dzundza, Matt Craven, Danny Nucci, Steve Zahn and Daniel von Bargen. A naval submarine thriller of the highest order, it's the first of five collaborations between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, and while it's easily the high water mark of the bunch it's also plain to see why they would be eager to re-team time and time again to try to recapture this magic. The acting showdown at the heart of this movie's conflict is its greatest spectacle, and while the movie got shut out at the Oscars come awards season, it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, losing all three. Womp womp. Plus: Hayley's been to the cinema and is back with a theatrical field report on the new Bong, Mickey 17! And J Mo is hooked on The Traitors. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our conversation, Crimson Tide is available to stream on Disney+. Other works discussed on this episode include Snowpiercer, Okja, The Host, Poor Things, Mississippi Burning, The Rock, The Domino Principle, Big Brother, The Mole, Josie and the Pussycats, The Hunt For Red October, The Pelican Brief, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), Unstoppable, and Deja Vu among others. Gene HackMarch rolls on next week with 1974's The Conversation, though you can bet the Tony Scott talk with continue as we will surely be talking more about its 90s spiritual sequel (and Crimson Tide follow-up) Enemy of the State as well. The Conversation is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel, while Enemy of the State can be found on Disney+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, it's the start of a beautiful friendship, as of all the gin joints in all the world, this movie had to walk into ours... Yes, Hayley is finally pulling one of the all-time greats down off the shelf as we watch 1942's Casablanca, directed by Richard Curtiz, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Dooley Wilson. Widely regarded as one of the most beloved films of all time, it will come as absolutely no surprise that we both adored it. A tragic romance set against a surprisingly timely morality play making big swinging statements on the Nazis and fascism as the war was still happening. It's great! If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, and in the case of a movie like this we do recommend you do, Casablanca is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. We're back next Friday to continue our run of five-star classics, with David Fincher's magnum opus: 2007's Zodiac, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., which is currently streaming on Paramount+ in Canada and presumably in the US as well. Send us a Text Message.Episode 165 is here, and this week, Liam and Rob look back at John McTiernan's, 1990 political thriller, The Hunt for Red October. Is this a Jack Ryan movie or a Marko Ramius movie? Does it get a tad boring around the second act? Does any director have a bigger disparity between their best movie and their worst? I mean, it's hard to see beyond Die Hard (or Predator) vs Rollerball. We discuss - link in bio.

Welcome to episode 100 of Course of Action. This episode is incredibly special, not just because of the Memorial Day release, but because it's also the 40th Anniversary of the legendary book by Tom Clancy, "The Hunt For Red October", a book that started the techno-thriller craze. Brian Andrews and Jeff Wilson, already legendary authors in their own right, were tapped to write the next several Jack Ryan books and their first offering is a huge swing for the fences in "Act of Defiance", a sequel to "Red October". Brian and Jeff are both Navy veterans, so this book is more than just a sequel. It's a massive tip of the hat to America's armed forces, specifically the Naval servicemen they call brothers and sisters. Listen in as Jeff and Brian discuss their research, getting the phone call to write for Clancy, and how they put together a sequel unlike any other sequel I've ever read. Act of Defiance is a 6-star read on a 5-star rating, and so nostalgiac it will have you starting the Clancy books all over again. The Jack Ryan franchise arguably reached its peak with it's first two offerings in the early 90s. Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, James Earl Jones, and of course Harrison Ford ensure that Tom Clancy's more technical stories get a healthy dose of humanity in these John McTiernan and Phillip Noyce films. Jason and Ryan celebrate the characterization, the espionage, and the thrills, all while contemplating the difference a few decades makes in the genre. The Deep Question: What's a movie concept that's due for reinvention? This Week's Features:The Hunt for Red October (1990)Patriot Games (1992)Message Jason and Ryan

1990 was a seminal year for your hosts at PCY. The memories run deep. Go back in time as we discuss moving, the transition from middle to high school, and carefree summers. As far as pop culture content, the options felt endless. In TV, Seinfeld began, Cheers was riding high, ABC sitcoms were hanging in there, and Saturday Night Live had maybe its best cast ever. In music, we were transitioning from cassettes to CDs, still loving pop, but also finding more "mature" styles. MC Hammer and C+C Music Factory were huge, but we also loved The Black Crowes, Sinead O'Connor, INXS, and the Gear Daddies. Finally, how can you top movies like Goodfellas, House Party, Pretty Woman, and The Hunt for Red October. It was a HUGE year. NAVAL WEEK kicks off with what might be The LAST Great Cold War Thriller?? Could be as this adaptation of Tom Clancy's best-selling novel was released literally just a few months after the fall of the Soviet Union.  It all takes place during the height of the Cold War back in the early 1980's.  There's a brand new Russian submarine in the water which can be apparently run silent and it's lead by Captain Ramius played by Sean Connery....who COULD pass for Russian right? :o Regardless, rumors start to fly among both the Russian and American Navies that he might have gone rogue....resulting a cat-and-mouse out there on the Atlantic Ocean between both naval fleets to find his ship (called The Red October) so that they can find out the truth before it's too late!  And inadvertently leading this chase is Jack Ryan, CIA analysis played by Alec Baldwin - he has suspicions that Ramius might NOT be going rogue and what results is a pulse-pounding suspense thriller directed by action-master John McTiernan as his follow-up to Die Hard two years prior.  The all-star cast also includes James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, Courtney B. Vance, and Stellan Skaarsgard among several others.....THE HUNT IS ON!!!See below for a link to a video citing the actual translated lyrics to the catchy "Hymm to Red October" theme....just in case you were always curious. :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRG1UixHvosHost & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

It's Die Hard in a nuclear sub!For this episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Isaac Butler, author of THE METHOD, arguably the definitive book about the evolution of method acting! Isaac is a veritable encyclopedia about the history of the acting craft and he lends his incredible insight to this discussion of CRIMSON TIDE, “an anti-action movie” where two of the greatest screen acting titans go head to head! When a US nuclear submarine loses communication with the command structure just as they've been ordered to fire their payload against a rogue Russian general, the sub's two senior officers, Ramsey (Gene Hackman) and Hunter (Denzel Washington) disagree vehemently on whether or not they should launch their nuclear missiles, a situation that ultimately leads to a full-on mutiny, as the specter of World War Three looms large!Isaac places this bombastic film in context within the lineage of method acting, discusses the differing schools of tradition that Hackman and Washington come from, and explains how their specific training informs their respective approaches towards their craft. The guys also talk about the film as a chamber-piece drama of sorts, and muse on how it compares to other nail-biting Cold War classics such as FAIL SAFE, SEVEN DAYS IN MAY and of course THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. They analyze its subtle but significant ‘DIE HARD DNA' and debate whether or not this is Tony Scott's best film. They discuss Quentin Tarantino's controversial contributions to the screenplay, and discuss the complexities wrought by the film's racial conflict. Finally the boys don their dress whites for the ‘Die Hard Oscars' and choose to collaborate for a particularly informative edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! CRIMSON TIDE trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS4I2Z1RBIwAt the time of release, CRIMSON TIDE is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, Redbox, Direct TV, Spectrum TV and all the usual platforms.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
