That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick takes a close look at one of the funniest recurring bits from Saturday Night Live in the 2000s, the “Scared Straight” sketches built around Kenan Thompson's unforgettable convict, Lorenzo McIntosh. Loosely inspired by the 1978 TV documentary of the same name, the scenes usually drop a group of clueless teenage punks into a police station, where Officer Sikorsky, played perfectly by Jason Sudeikis, decides the best teaching tool is unleashing Lorenzo. Nick digs into how the sketches came together, who was involved in writing them, and why the formula worked so well. Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Bobby Moynihan rotate through the terrified kids, while Thompson cranks the intensity to ridiculous levels. Along the way, you'll hear standout moments featuring guest appearances from Shia LaBeouf, Tracy Morgan, Zach Galifianakis, and an especially memorable turn by Betty White. It's a deep dive into a run of sketches that still hold up, showing off Thompson's commitment, Sudeikis's timing, and a cast that knew exactly how far to push the joke. [Ep 160]

It is a privilege to welcome actress and singer Kim Yarbrough back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar brand (and for the first time on the podcast) for the first time in 14 years!   Many Reality TV fans first saw Kim Yarbrough audition for The Voice USA: Season Two in Spring 2012. Her powerful interpretation of Chaka Khan's “Tell Me Something Good” turned both founding coaches' chairs, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera, around.  After joining Team Adam, Kim wowed the audience with her cover of Mary J. Blige's “No More Drama” and advanced to the Season Two Live Playoffs.  During The Voice: Season Two Live Playoffs, she sang Adele's “Rolling in the Deep” but fell into the Bottom Three.  After delivering a superb, powerful cover of Jennifer Hudson's “Spotlight,” the Maroon 5 frontman chose to advance Kim's then teammate, Katrina Parker, to the Top 16.  After her appearance on the NBC talent competition, Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, and Kathie Lee Gifford interviewed her on Today, and she sang with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Over the years, Kim dove deep into the entertainment industry. She guest-starred on several television shows, including 2 Broke Girls, 9-1-1, Hollywood Heights, Hot in Cleveland, Kenan, The Mindy Project, New Girl, Shameless, and The Up-Shaws. Kim also had recurring roles in Cherish the Day (Aunt Natalie), The Haunted Hathaways (Madame Labuef), and the animated series Kid Cosmic (Flo (voice)). In addition, Kim lent her voice to the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.  She also shared the stage and screen with entertainment industry legends, including Dennis Quaid, Loretta Devine, Octavia Spencer, Cedric the Entertainer, Stevie Wonder, Sheila E, and the late Betty White and her mentor Della Reese, who produced the stage show Della Reese Presents Kim Yarbrough, which allowed Kim to showcase her talents to the Hollywood Entertainment Community.   On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kim Yarbrough spoke about voice acting, tutoring students in the arts, and if she would ever audition for America's Got Talent or wait for a future All-Stars season of The Voice USA. Jon also talks about the moving and surprising reactions he's gotten to it so far and what it was like to write about such difficult topics as losing three lovers to AIDS, having two difficult heart-to-hearts with his father 45 years apart and getting sexually assaulted by a guy he met in acting class at 19. He also writes about working with gay youth at the LA LGBT Center, teaching writing to queer seniors at Triangle Square in LA and discovering the magic of being in "vagina world" when he booked Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues as his first big show as Director of the Cultural Arts Department of the Center in the late 90's. Other topics include: why he used to call people for two rings and then hang up, the pleasure of Sunday Sauce, befriending a Canadian soldier while traveling in Bali and having it change his life forever, the wisdom of Betty White and a psychic Stevie Nicks story that will blow your mind. https://www.jonimparatowriter.com/

A Betty White–Worthy Celebration on Scary Spirits Podcast! Well, hello there, dear! This week on the Scary Spirits Podcast, we're throwing a birthday bash fit for a legend! That's right, in honor of Betty White’s birthday on January 17, the gang is diving teeth‑first into the delightfully campy 1999 creature feature, Lake Placid. Join your hosts Karen and Greg as they revisit this cult‑classic horror‑comedy, chatting about giant crocodiles, small‑town chaos, and the joy of a well‑timed zinger. Along the way, they sip on a dangerously delicious themed cocktail appropriately named “The Crocodile.” I can't promise it won't bite back. If you love classic horror movies, Lake Placid, Betty White moments, and podcasts with spirited conversations (and cocktails!), you won't want to miss this episode. So grab a drink, settle in, and remember—age is just a number, but a good scare and a good laugh? Those are timeless. The Crocodile Cocktail • 2 oz vodka• 1 oz Mezcal• 1 oz triple sec• 2 oz lemon juice Instructions: Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well for 10-15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve. Source: makemeacocktail.com A Brief Synopsis: When a mysterious creature violently kills a man in a Maine lake, Jack Wells, the local game warden, looks into the bizarre case, along with Sheriff Hank Keough and visiting paleontologist Kelly Scott. Looking for clues in a tooth that the beast left behind, Kelly and the others eventually locate the monster, a massive and vicious reptile eager to devour anything in its path. Can the crocodile-like creature be stopped? Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: Karen and Greg reminisce about their Partridge Family record albums. Dr. Karen tells us all about paleontology. We learn what a keystone species is. Greg does his best Tom Jones impression. Naturally the Asian Pacific crocodile is discussed. Host Cynthia Bemis Abrams welcomes Mary Owen, daughter of Golden Age film and TV icon Donna Reed, to explore how The Donna Reed Show (1958–1966) pushed boundaries, challenged norms, and influenced portrayals of motherhood and feminism in sitcoms. Reed's character, Donna Stone, was the first TV mom to lead a show focused on everyday family life — earning her a Golden Globe and backlash from Second Wave Feminists. Mary shares first-hand stories about growing up on set, preserving her mother's legacy, and how progressive ideas—like casting a Black neighbor boy—were shut down by networks despite the show's attempts at representation. Cynthia and Mary also compare The Donna Reed Show's storytelling to that of I Love Lucy, Hazel, and Betty White's Life with Elizabeth. This rich conversation reframes Reed's influence on pop culture, sitcom structure, and feminism — and challenges what we think we know about "trad wives."   Related Episodes 80s Monied Matriarchs: Ellie Ewing and Angela Channing https://traffic.libsyn.com/advancedtvherstory/80s_Monied_Matriarchs.mp3 Betty White's Career in TV https://traffic.libsyn.com/advancedtvherstory/Betty_White.mp3 Episode Life Lessons Progress often happens in "small steps," even when it isn't widely recognized in the moment. Feminist impact can emerge from unexpected places — even from characters previously thought of as  "traditional." Representation battles have long histories, often hidden behind network decisions. Today on Word Balloon, we're diving into the legacy of Olan Soule — the original animated Batman — and the long, fascinating TV career that made him a cornerstone of early superhero entertainment. And there's no better guide for this conversation than our guest, Dan Pasternack.Dan  is one of the great archivists and historians of television comedy and classic broadcast performance. Over the years, he's worked with and documented some of the most influential talents in the medium, including Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Norman Lear, Betty White, Bob Newhart, and Jonathan Winters. His work preserving and celebrating these artists has made him a crucial voice in understanding how TV comedy and character performance evolved.Dan is also the producer behind the acclaimed Jonathan Winters Record Store Day release, Jonathan Winters Unearthed, a project built from both classic and newly uncovered recordings — a tribute to one of comedy's purest improvisational geniuses.Beyond his archival work, Dan is shaping the next generation of creators as an educator at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he teaches graduate students the craft of developing television and digital storytelling.Today, he joins us to break down Olan Soule's journey from Chicago radio actor to defining the animated voice of Batman in Filmation's 1960s shows, The Batman/Superman Hour, and the Super Friends era — and how Soule's understated, square-jawed vocal style helped create the template every animated Batman actor followed. It's a deep dive into forgotten history, iconic performances, and the building blocks that shaped superhero animation long before the modern era.

All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

We've come to the moment where we can finally talk about possibly the one last thing all Americans can agree on: the loveliness that was Betty White.  Betty White grew up with television and she paid her dues. From hours in full make-up on live television, to decades of stiff game show competition, “The Golden Girls” was far from her only contribution to culture and entertainment. The part we don't often hear about is the influential network of female entertainers she ran with, as well as the vast network of more behind-the-scenes players that she was connected with. So, “Sweet Tea & TV” is here to correct that for ya.  Betty made us laugh. She made us cheer. But, more importantly, she made space for others to do the same. And in doing so, she ensured that the women of television would always have a seat at the table.

Rose Nylund may not be one to “toot her own Vertugenflürgen, so we'll do it for her.  Let's face it: she's the Golden Girl you want to hug most. She's the forever optimist, genuinely sincere and sincerely genuine, inclusive, and downright wholesome. Rose is like a walking, breathing plate of warm cookies and hot cocoa.  But don't get it twisted: she's also strong, wildly competitive, and not to be underestimated. Sometimes her best qualities – along with heavy helping of naivety and cluelessness – place her in precarious situations. And, look, we're all better for knowing more about St. Olaf.  There would be no Rose, not as we know her, without the legendary Betty White at the helm. So come back Thursday for an Extra Sugar all about the gal behind the gal.

Rachel, a loyal listener and subscriber, asked for it, and Nick delivers: the unforgettable night Betty White hosted Saturday Night Live. On May 8, 2010, following a grassroots Facebook campaign, the comedy legend took the stage for a Mother's Day episode that pulled in the season's highest ratings and won her an Emmy. The show featured a reunion of powerhouse female cast members — Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Rachel Dratch, and Molly Shannon — who brought back classic characters while teaming up with White in sketches that were hilariously naughty and delightfully vulgar. At 88 years old, Betty White proved she was game for anything, and the results were comedy gold. Along with clips from that night, Nick shares behind-the-scenes stories, backstage moments, and why this episode remains one of the most beloved in SNL history. [EP 140]
