My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laura Van Wormer, and we are going to talk about her project of serializing a soap opera about her high school class.   Laura Van Wormer is the creative force behind "The Class of '74," a serialized fictional podcast that blends nostalgia, drama, and meticulous historical detail. Set in 1971–1974 in a well-heeled Connecticut suburb of New York City, the show has been praised for its authenticity and period-accurate setting, detail and events, and draws on Laura's decades of experience as a novelist, editor and researcher, with a specialty in the ways the past informs the present.   Her storytelling style is rooted in a good sense of humor, character psychology, the rhythms of small-town life, and creates a world listeners fall in love with. She herself was a member of the Class of '74 in Darien, Connecticut and was infamous for stopping high school parties to read stories she had written.   Laura started her career at Doubleday as a secretary (in the era Jackie Onassis worked there) and worked her way up to editor. She left to pursue her own writing and while learning how to write a novel, supported herself by creating books with the creators of the hit night-time TV serials, "Dynasty," "Dallas" and "Knots Landing."   Laura's first novel, RIVERSIDE DRIVE, was a bestseller when it was published in 1988. She published 13 more novels with major houses but in 2015 she was on her way to the airport to visit Betty White in Los Angeles when a drunk driver going the wrong way on the Merritt Parkway in CT hit her head-on. She woke up a month later in Yale New Haven hospital with a crushed collar bone, 16 broken ribs, torn diaphragm, broken knee, and a severed foot that required four surgeries to save.   Ten years later she attended her 50th high school reunion and was sad because no one could hear her. When she went home her other half suggested why didn't she write a story as a podcast so her classmates could hear her – and THE CLASS OF '74 was born, a weekly narrative soap opera about teenagers starting high school in 1971. While the story is fiction, it faithfully recreates the fascinating time before cell phones existed and is guaranteed to take the listeners' minds off their problems – at least for half an hour each week. On most days, the sprawling New England-style farmhouse in Brentwood teemed with life. You never knew who might walk through the front door …Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Betty White, Martin Short. Icons of the entertainment world were drawn there, lured by the home's storied past and its colorful owners: Rob and Michele Reiner. The first person to pull up to its towering iron gates that day in mid-December was no celebrity, but rather a massage therapist arriving for a 2 p.m. appointment. When no one answered, the masseuse reached out to Romy, the couple's 27-year-old daughter. Romy arrived just after 3:30 and moved through her childhood home with deliberate steps, that low-level worry turning into a cold, sharp fear. She searched room after room until she finally reached the primary suite. Romy pushed open the heavy doors and screamed at what she saw. There, on the bed she used to sneak into as a child after she had a bad dream, lay her father, the life drawn from his face, the cream-colored sheets stained a deep, unmistakable red. She didn't know it at the time, but her mother rested only a few feet away mercifully out of Romy's view.  It didn't take police long to make an arrest. The suspect came as a surprise to the public but not to those close to the Reiner family. Co-Host Lisa Arch joins us with our guest, Stan Zimmerman.From a supportive teacher who first recognized his talent to writing some of television's most beloved episodes, Stan Zimmerman's journey is a testament to passion, persistence, and perfect timing.He sets it all out in his new book 'The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore,' which draws from journals he has kept religiously since college, offering a deeply personal look at a life lived inside television history. In a conversation both heartfelt and hilarious, Stan reflects on how he took school theater as seriously as if it were big time show biz, because to him, it was. Theater kids were his tribe, and storytelling was already his calling.That destiny led him to Hollywood, where in his early 20s, at meeting that had not gone well, on his way out the door, he pitched a Hail Mary Golden Girls story idea that launched his career. The episode he co-wrote with his writing partner, Jim Berg is titled “Blanche and the Younger Man.” It earned the team a Writers Guild nomination and carved the trailhead for a groundbreaking career path.  Working in the 1980s during the height of the AIDS crisis, Stan recalls how even in Hollywood many people were still in the closet, and that while building career relationships, on a show that would become a gay obsession, he felt pressure to hide his personal life. We also hear stories that could only happen in show business: hanging out with Sandra Bernhard when an answering machine message from Madonna sparked the beginning of their friendship; witnessing Estelle Getty struggle with early-onset dementia on set, and later realizing that Betty White's jokes to the studio audience, which he thought were at Estelle's expense, may have been acts of quiet kindness, allowing Estelle space to recover her lines.Stan reflects on the enduring legacy of The Golden Girls, a show whose cultural impact he couldn't have imagined while he was in the writers' room.
