Join host Cynthia Bemis Abrams as she launches a new limited series, TV Talk Shows, part of the Advanced TV Herstory podcast. In this first episode, Cynthia delves into a study that reveals women are more prominently featured in unscripted television shows than in scripted ones—another example of the industry's inclination to front women in projects that are less expensive to produce. She also touches on the recent strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, emphasizing the importance of storytelling and representation in scripted television. Cynthia then outlines the focus of the TV Talk Shows series, which will explore the historical context, memorable moments, and surprising controversies surrounding unscripted hosts and guests. The episode concludes by acknowledging the pioneering achievements of Della Reese as the first black woman to fill in for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show and Betty White's stance against the broadcast network executives who were reluctant to feature performers of color on her 1950s talk and variety show. Tv and film legend Carol Burnett joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul for our 100th episode extravaganza! The Carol Burnett Show powerhouse calls in to discuss all things kindness: including life-changing acts of kindness throughout her life and career, and what her golden advice for the world. What can be said of the beloved icon Carol Burnett that hasn't been said? Carol is, of course, an award-winning actress, producer, comedic genius and best-selling author, widely recognized for her work in Broadway shows like Once Upon A Mattress, films like Annie and television, most notably The Carol Burnett Show. Named in 2007 by TIME magazine as one of “100 Best Television Shows of All Time,” The Carol Burnett Show ran for 11 years, averaged 30 million viewers per week, and received 25 Emmy Awards, making it one of the most honored shows in television history. It put Carol and her friends opposite legendary guest stars like Lucille Ball, Betty White, Cher, and her good friend Julie Andrews. Carol's remarkable journey to stardom started with humble beginnings. Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1933, she was predominantly raised by her mother and grandmother. The family moved to a less-than-glamorous part of Hollywood in the late 1930s, seeking a better life and eventually putting Carol in the halls of Hollywood High School. As time went by, the family's modest means made going to college a far away dream for Carol. However two acts of kindness soon intervened and changed her path forever… which, of course, we discuss in today's conversation. Carol now has a permanent steak in the grounds of Los Angeles, with the intersection of Highland Ave. and Selma directly adjacent to Hollywood High School, named Carol Burnett Square. This is merely one accolade the star has racked up over the years. As a highly acclaimed actress, Carol has been honored with Emmys, Golden Globes, People's Choice Awards, the Peabody, a Grammy, a SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. and many more. She is a Kennedy Center Honoree, the recipient of the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for Humor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom; was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2019, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association created The Carol Burnett Award which is an honorary Golden Globe to celebrate outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen. Offscreen, Carol enjoys spending time with her husband Brian, her two daughters Jody and Erin, her grandsons, and her cat, Nikki. As a passionate supporter of the arts and education, she established several scholarships around the country, including the Carol Burnett Musical Theatre Competition at her alma mater, UCLA, and the Carrie Hamilton Foundation, to honor her daughter's memory. A major thank you to our 100th episode sponsors: Schmackary's Cookies, Relativity Ventures, Sticker You, Rapid Press, NAJ Captured, Scott Appel Media, Jennifer Laski PR, Deanna Giulietti and Factory Underground, where this episode was recorded. You've probably heard stories of celebrities leaving their fortunes to their beloved pooches and thought, “How silly!” Sure, it's unlikely that an animal needs millions of dollars - after all, what will they do with it? But if you're a pet person, have you stopped to consider what will happen to your sidekick after you're gone? People don't think about how long animals can live. Dogs can live anywhere from 8-16 years, and cats from 12-18. And those are your household four-legged friends. What about fish and birds? Koi fish live anywhere from 25-35 years, and parrots can live up to 50 or 65 years – who knew?! Don't forget there are lizards, turtles, snakes, and even horses that could outlive you. “Estate planning for your pets is important for several reasons. The first, of course, is that you love your pets like a child, and you worry about what will happen to them when you're gone.” If an owner does pass, often, the pet is left out of the picture, and a family member gets stuck with the burden of caring for them on their own, facing vet bills, grooming expenses, daily care, and more. Even worse than leaving a loved one with the responsibility is your poor puppy ending up at the pound. Fortunately, a little bit of planning goes a long way to ensure your pet friends get the quality of care they deserve. It can be as simple as researching rescues, having a conversation with the person you want to designate to ensure they are on board during your pet estate planning process, or setting up a pet trust. In this episode, Kirsten and Madison will talk more about, Why it's essential to include all pets, from goldfish to horses, in your estate plan. The variety of options available to ensure quality pet care after you're gone. Why it is important to include a financial incentive, maybe not millions, but enough to cover the needs of your pet. Fun stories of celebrities who made big plans for their pups. How to hold your pet caregiver accountable after you are gone. And much more! So, saddle up (if you're estate planning for a horse, that is) because this episode has as much fun and enthusiasm as it does information and inspiration. It's never too late to start planning, and listening in is a great way to start!

Book Vs. Movie: The LoraxThe Dr. Seuss 1971 Children's Book Vs. the 2012 AdaptationThe Margos close out “Banned Books Month” with a visit with Dr. Seuss and The Lorax, a tale of environmental conservation and the dangers of rampant deforestation. Theodore Seuss Geisel was known for his colorful characters, accusations of racism, and having some of his books pulled for outdated notions or controversial take on capitalism. The Lorax (first published in 1971) was written after a recent trip to Africa where Geisel and his wife were concerned about the environment and wildlife in danger of extinction. The Lorax wants “The Onceler” to stop the destruction of the environment. Over the years, many logging companies tried to get the book banned for being “mean” to their industry. So much so that in 1995, two different forest/wood flooring industries raised funds to create their own version called Truax, which supported the logging industry. (Seriously)There was a 1972 faithful adaptation starring Eddie Albert, but in this episode, we discuss the 2012 film starring Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, and Ed Helms. It's filled with lots of music and rare mentions of the actual book. We have THOUGHTS about this one!In this ep, the Margos discuss:The life and work of Dr. SuessThe inspiration for The Lorax. The reasons schools ban his work. The differences between the book and movieThe cast of the 2012 film: Danny DeVito (The Lorax,) Ed Helms (The Onceler,) Zac Efron (Ted Wiggins,) Taylor Swift (Audrey,) Rob Riggle (Alyosis O'Hare,) Jenny Slate (Mrs. Wiggins,) Betty White (Grammy Norma,) Nasim Pedrad (Isabella,) Stephen Tobolowsky (Uncle Ubb,) Elamrie Wendel (Aunt Grizelda,) Danny Cooksy (Brett & Chet,) Joel Swetow, Michael Beattie, and Chris Renaud.Clips used:Grammy NormaThe Lorax (2012 trailer)Music: John Powell & Cinco PaulBook Vs. In the late 1980's and early '90s, the TV sitcom landscape was dominated by an unstoppable force known as Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions. It's the creative juggernaut that brought us Soap and Benson in the late 70s, evolving into the force field behind The Golden Girls. A series so iconic, it launched the spin-offs, Nurses, The Golden Palace and Empty Nest, co-starring our guest, David Leisure. This Saturday night lineup featured casts of characters who occupied the same imagined universe and often popped into each other's shows. David was Empty Nest's wacky neighbor and he also appeared as Charley Dietz on The Golden Girls, Nurses and another Witt/Thomas/Harris creation, Blossom.Empty Nest, starred Richard Mulligan as Dr. Harry Weston, a widowed pediatrician, much sought after by all the Miami single ladies while riding the emotional waves of his grownup daughters who have refilled his Empty Nest.David gives us an exclusive peek behind the scenes of this memorable time in broadcast television history. Was Bea Arthur really the only Earth human who hated Betty White? What did Bea Arthur hate even more than Betty White? How did David's show attempt to fill the space left behind in their nest by Kristy McNichol? How did the cast and crew react to her emotional return?David shares his origin story and how he landed two key roles. 1) “First Krishna” in Airplane. (He was willing to shave his head.) And 2) The Joe Isuzu commercials. (He's an obsequious liar.)We also learn why St. Jude's hospital is so important to David, how he overcame childhood obesity and the truth about his secret, backstage divorce group therapy sessions with Loni Anderson and Richard Mulligan. All that plus IMDB Roulette and Empty Nest Trivia! And Fritz shares his own personal run-in with Golden Girls Producer Susan Harris. (She's probably still pissed.) Reminiscing about the video games you grew up playing is always fun, just as long as you don't actually go back and play them again. Ryan learned the hard way that that spoils some of the magic. Also, a (gross) discussion about torture and some of the worst they've heard of. Realizing we can't do accents, assaulting a car, and trying to feel better about climate change. They are THOSEGUYSYOUHATE!

Author SHELLEY HERMAN is an Emmy-nominated show-biz veteran, a longtime host, writer, producer and personality with decades of success on both sides of the camera. Now, she's taking us back to the beginning of her career – when she joined the famous NBC Studio Page program. My Peacock Tale: Secrets Of An NBC Page is the story of Herman, her fellow pages who became lifelong friends, and the dizzying array of celebrities, hangers-on, has-beens, and legends that found their way through the halls of NBC Burbank in the mid-late 1970s. In what Kirkus Reviews calls “a revealing and often delightful insider's look at the heyday of network television,” Shelley Herman recalls the almost impossible-to-imagine situations behind the scenes amidst a who's-who of 1970s entertainment culture. From a trip to see Elvis in Vegas that lead to Shelley getting into the Page program; to literally “breaking a leg” in an encounter that brought her an indelible moment with a musical hero; to being privy to the secrets of Joan Rivers' feud with Johnny Carson; to all of the interpersonal, professional, and emotional connections forged by Shelley and her friends that would define this as the time of their lives. That's not counting stories about Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor, Freddie Prinze, Gilda Radner, Robin Williams, Betty White, ex-Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Redd Foxx, Frank Sinatra, John Travolta, and other still famous (and some forgotten) giants of film, television, and music. With direct honesty, this celebratory reminiscence offers a unique glimpse into the beginning of a young woman's career amidst perhaps one of the most dynamic, colorful, and influential moments in recent cultural history. A longtime writer and TV game show production veteran ("Supermarket Sweep"), Shelley Herman is a southern California native who has made a life in show business as a creator and performer, starting as a contestant on "The Dating Game" and eventually writing more than 1000 hours of game shows. Married to actor Randall Carver, the LA resident has been witness to fascinating chapters of TV industry history, and knows that the tales told in My Peacock Tale are just the beginning. We apologize in advance for our our kitchen apparel fashion tips. With a three of our crew missing, the remaining cast members try to channel our missing mates (seance not included.) We discuss the action and results of the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race, which leads to creating The Thing About Cars Drinking Game. A tip of the hat is given to Mazda for supporting the classes of road racing that feed the pro classes. We chastise hypermilers who block traffic while admit to doing a bit of guilty hypermiling ourselves and talk about their competitions. The truth about what Mickey has in common with Betty White and Norman Rockwell is brought to light while pondering why his current Honda might be getting poor MPG's. When we have slow weeks on the show we like to do what are called "Very Special Episodes". This weeks episode is a doozy. We present the audience with a question. If you could visit dead celebrities in a museum, which one would you pick? Then Mike, Josh and Mike pick who they would put inside their respective attraction. Have fun and enjoy the chaos as we quickly descend into madness.

A Let's Watch 25 years in the making. It took Turk182 25 years to watch this movie, after seeing the trailer in theaters. A town under siege by rain. A dam threatening to burst. An armored car carrying millions of dollars. A band of thieves. An ousted sheriff. Christian Slater. BETTY WHITE! Acomi and Turk secure their life vests and watch Hard Rain (1998), originally titled Flood. A movie to stupid to make its money back, even if it could. Over budget due to studio ignorance and a plot that's beyond nonsensical. Hard Rain makes Hurricane Heist look like The Titanic. Unlike a better disaster movie, such as Twister, which came out two years before it, Hard Rain treats the weather plot as a backdrop instead of another character. Choosing to downplay the serious danger posed by the weather, in favor of the human threats that seem unfazed by it. Coupled with characters that make bad decisions upon bad decisions, a lackluster plot twist (technically two), and a character turn that's more like a character pivot - "In the next act, turn character alignment slight right." - it's a bad movie from stat to overdrawn finish. Join Acomi and Turk as they waddle through this watery quagmire of idiocy. Rumor is, this is the movie that made Randy Quaid crazy. Get your towels ready for Hard Rain. Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. All jokes and comments are improvised. NO PREPARED JOKES OR COMMENTS! During recording, the movies are watched at a low volume and with the subtitles on. Viewers may want to turn subtitles on as well to enhance the viewing experience. So, cue up the audio, ready the movie, and hit play when we say so. Note: This video is the commentary recorded by Acomi and Turk182. The commentary can be enjoyed on its own, but if you want to experience the Let's Watch! in all its glory, you'll need your own copy of the movie. Most of the movies viewed can be streamed online for free. #OMTWF #KorovaEntertainment #LetsWatch #LW #Acomi #Turk182 #awfulsome #HardRain #Flood #ChristianSlater #MorganFreeman #MinnieDriver #BettyWhite #disaster #disastermovie Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. What's better than watching Betty White curse out a bunch of cops? We can't think of much — other than getting the chance to gush about it for an hour and a half. And we knew that if we were going to do that, we had to bring in the experts. So we invited Out on the Lanai, the first Golden Girls podcast, to join us on a new Spooky Tuesday as we covered Lake Placid (1999). Half a creature feature and half a Bill Pullman rom-com, this flick features Bridget Fonda mid-breakup spiral as she drags her butt out to the boonies of Maine to flirt with lady cops, banter with eccentric billionaires, and hunt for prehistoric monsters. Whether you're comparing it to The Meg or to Nope or to Ally McBeal, there's no denying that this movie makes for one golden time with the girls.Follow Out on the Lanai on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Check out their new episodes weekly on Apple and Spotify. You can find Kerri Doherty on Instagram and Twitter, and H. Alan Scott on Instagram as himself and as Sadie Pines.
