Rajam Roose, a massage therapist and founder of the San Diego Pain Summit, comes onto the HET Podcast to speak about her interest in pain treatment and research, as well as, explain how she was able to bring her dream conference to fruition. Biography: In 2014, Rajam Roose (a massage therapist with an interest in pain treatment and research) was organizing interdisciplinary continuing education workshops for manual and physical therapists in San Diego. During a break at one workshop, she overheard the instructor asking the participants if they were learning current pain research in their programs. If they were familiar with pain research experts such as Patrick Wall, David Butler, Lorimer Moseley, etc. The students nodded their heads, and one spoke out and replied: "Yes, we were taught current pain research at my school but I have no idea how to apply it into my practice."  Rajam realized there needed to be an event where participants could learn clinical applications of pain research that would be directly relevant to their work. Without any prior experience organizing or managing a conference, Rajam created this multidisciplinary pain management conference and found success from the start. Over the years, the San Diego Pain Summit has evolved into an event where clinicians learn how to have a person-centered practice. View the historical list of all speakers/presentations. The San Diego Pain Summit is on a mission to change how pain is managed and treated in the healthcare industry by organizing conferences and workshops where clinicians can learn up to date pain education and research. The Summit also includes voices representing the patient's lived experience, which is an integral part of creating person centered care.

In March on the Sports Therapy Association Videocast & Podcast, our weekly focus will be on up & coming CPD (Continuing Professional Development), with the aim of introducing approaches, ideas and techniques that could potentially help you, the soft tissue therapist, manage your learning and growth. We start off with an episode discussing the two part 'Dermoneuromodulation' (DNM) course coming to the UK, being delivered in both Birmingham and Exeter in March and June (dates down below). Special guests Mike Grice and Daniel Williams of Movement Therapy Education who have organised the face-to-face UK workshops join us in this episode to discuss: The pitfalls of using Google to select CPD Why the name Dermoneuromodulation (DNM)   The roots of DNM Listening to Diane Jacobs for the first time at the San Diego Pain Summit n 2015.  How DNM brings the 'Bio' and 'Psychosocial' together The workshop instructor Rey Allen and Mike Reoch  What to expect from the DNM workshops Workshop Details • DNM Level 1 - taught by Mike Reoch: March 12/13/14 in Birmingham, March 18/18/20 in Exeter. • DNM Level 2 - taught by Rey Allen: June 4/5/6 in Birmingham, June 10/11/12 in Exeter. What is DermoNeuroModulation? Dermoneuromodulation (DNM) was founded by Diane Jacobs, a physiotherapist for over 40 years and a manual therapist for over 30. In the 1990's, Diane studied with David Butler (co-author with Lorimer Moseley of the hugely successful 'Explain Pain' manual for therapists and patients). Given the idea that she was less likely affecting tissue targets and more likely treating peripheral nerves, Diane started to read the evidence and investigate the anatomy & mechanism of the nervous system. Her attention was drawn in particular to cutaneous nerves, something that no manual therapy teacher had ever mentioned before. By 2005, Dianne was calling her work 'DermoNeuroModulation', later renamed to DermoNeuroModulating to refer to it as a verb. In Diane's own words: "DermoNeuroModulating, or -tion, is a structured, interactive approach to manual therapy that considers the nervous system of the patient from skin cell to sense of self. Techniques are slow, light, kind, intelligent, responsive and effective. Positioning of limbs and trunk affects deeper nerve trunks (by shortening and widening their container), and is combined with skin stretch directed toward cutaneous fields of nerves that branch outward into skin (which may draw neural structure further through its container). It is prudent to remember that manual handling of a patient's physicality is only a small part of developing a complete therapeutic context for change - while optional, it can also be optimal." On March 8th our focus on up & coming CPD continues, with special guest Pete Malliaras who is bringing his face-to-face 'Mastering Lower Limb Tendinopathy Course' (5th edition) to the UK this March 2022, in Newport, Epsom, London and Haslewood. A 3-day conference in San Diego, during a wet and miserable February back home in England? Where do we sign up?! Yes, Matt has managed to finagle his way to attending the 2022 San Diego Pain Summit - but what is it, and why is it such an important conference? Rajam Roose, former massage therapist and founder and CEO of The San Diego Pain Summit, joins The Massage Collective to fill us in on the history of the summit - how it grew from the need for an event where participants could learn clinically relevant applications of pain research, how getting the first years Keynote speaker (Lorimer Moseley!) was a game changer, how the evening hot tubs and fire-pits result in amazing connections (we're looking at you Adam Meakins & Ben Cormack's Better Clinician Project!), plus how this years summit is shaping up to be the most interactive yet - whether you are there in person or joining online from the comfort of your sofa. The back catalogue of talks hosted on the SDPS website is worth its weight in gold, but the aspect that makes this summit so unique is the opportunity for attendees and speakers to network and learn from each other in a relaxed atmosphere like no other. We highly recommend joining the virtual conference! You can contact Rajam and find out more here; Facebook Twitter

Ben shares tons of high quality content and thoughts on social media, and has a number of great continuing education courses (see below). We got to discuss a wide array of topics throughout the chat. In the early parts of the discussion, we covered the importance of research appraisal and interpretation from a clinician’s point of view, the trichotomization of the evidence-based pillars and the biopsychosocial model, and Ben’s development as a clinician. The conversation shifts towards the use of more flexible rehabilitation, the importance of a therapeutic alliance, we’re treated an education analogy for the ages, and we even see Ben taking over as the host of the podcast. The Project EGG Show: Entrepreneurs Gathering for Growth | Conversations That Change The World

Rajam Roose : Founder at San Diego Pain Summit After spending a few years vagabonding around the Americas, she settled into a 16 year long occupation as a massage therapist. It was during these years that she became interested in pain research. When she realized that the current U.S. healthcare system was mostly based in outdated models of pain research, she founded the San Diego Pain Summit to provide a platform where clinicians could learn about current pain research and the applications in their practice.  She also founded another business, Grow Your Massage Business , to help massage business owners learn online marketing strategies. Rajam enjoys Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Marketing and has been studying these fields since 2008. She's passionate about helping small business owners learn how they can get started harnessing the power of online marketing in a no-nonsense and easy way. A little bit about Jason, he is a former chronic pain patient, and his back to pain-free health inspired him to become a therapist, a trainer, and an educator. Jason has a Massage practice in Minnesota, where he also trains clients, and works with elite athletes. He is also the Master of Ceremonies for the San Diego Pain Summit and has presented at the International Massage Therapy Research Conference. I really enjoy Jason’s easy going style, and his passion to help people. We touch on a number of interesting topics in this episode, but the one that stuck out the most to me was how to approach a modality without loosing the flexibility to treat each client individually. As usual I ask my question about failure, and we learn what new habit he has recently adopted.

This week I am bringing in Rajam Roose to talk about Online Marketing for massage therapists. Rajam started practicing massage back in 1999, and maintained a very successful practice for more than 15 years. She has since decided to pass along many of the tools to her success and and teach massage business owners the skills to take advantage of digital marketing and the confidence to do it successfully. While there is a lot of information and programs out there to help people take advantage of digital marketing, there was just not very much that was targeted specifically to help us bodyworkers navigate those waters. I can’t tell you how many times I have had students and colleagues tell me how they avoid online marketing and the moment it comes up in conversation they are like deer in headlights. It's my hope by bringing Rajam on to talk with me that we can start to break this subject down into more understandable pieces. Hopefully by the end of this conversation the subject my feel more accessible and perhaps even inspire a few of you to take that first step. Rajam also happens to be the founder and CEO of the San Diego Pain Summit. So I had to slip in a question about that event. I have heard about this Summit from several of my guests, and I am excited to say that I will be attending it in Feb 2019. One of my goals there is to meet and interview some of the presenters so that you as my listeners can benefit from some of the subjects we cover there.

In this week’s episode, Paul Lagerman, the Naked Physio, and I co-host part Two of live from the San Diego Pain Summit in San Diego, California. The summit is all about applying pain science to clinical practice and we were fortunate to have a few of the summit speakers, who all come from different healthcare backgrounds, join us to discuss how we should be addressing patients with chronic pain.   Let me refresh your memory as to this fantastic panel of pain experts: Ravensara Travillian is a massage therapist based in Seattle, Washington specializing in populations of refugees and veterans Sandy Hilton is a physical therapist that specializes in pelvic pain in Chicago, Illinois Greg Lehman is a physical therapist, chiropractor, and a research biomechanist from Toronto, Canada Bronnie Thompson is an occupational therapist and a senior lecturer on pain and pain management at the University of Otago in Christchurch, New Zealand Michael Shacklock is a physical therapist and research academic with interests in neurodynamics from Dunedin, New Zealand   In this episode, you will learn: How to manage chronic pain patients' expectations throughout your treatment plan Techniques to get your patients excited about their home exercise program We hear from San Diego Pain Summit organizer Rajam Roose And a whole lot more! Chronic pain is complex and this discussion really benefited from having a multidisciplinary panel provide their diverse insights and experiences. As healthcare clinicians, we can help make sense of chronic pain in our patients' lives but we need to deliver that information to them in meaningful and relevant ways.
