In this episode, my guest is Dr. Ellen Langer, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Harvard University and the world's leading researcher on the mind-body connection and the power our thinking has on our physical health. She explains how specific ways of framing and asking questions about the world shape our physical health and rate of aging. Dr. Langer also explains how our perception of time and control significantly impact our rate of physical healing, hormones, immune system, and longevity. She describes mindfulness as a way of framing life, not simply a meditation or other practice, and discusses data showing how to use one's mind to overcome health challenges and achieve remarkable outcomes. Dr. Langer is a luminary and pioneer in researching the relationship between the mind and body with scientific rigor. Her work and our discussion are applicable to women and men of all ages and walks of life. Read the full episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Example: The Awakening would begin with the letter A.  For films with multiple words in the title, the film will begin with the first letter of the first full word. Example: I See The TV Glow would begin with the letter I. For films that begin with a number in the title, the film will begin with the first letter of the first word. Example: 28 Days Later will begin with the letter D.  We will not be including any films with titles made up of just numbers, like 1922.  Media Discussion Worst of M Menendez: The Day of the Lord (2020) - Lonely The Menu (2022) - Suzie Malignant (2021) - Libby Best of M Mother! The nocebo effect demonstrates how the mind can cause illness through negative expectations, as highlighted by a famous incident in a U.S. textile factory in the 1960s. Workers believed a bug was causing dizziness, nausea, and other symptoms, yet no physical cause was found. This mysterious outbreak underscores the potent influence of beliefs on health, a phenomenon that's becoming increasingly relevant in understanding modern psychosomatic conditions like the controversial Havana Syndrome. In this episode, Michael H. Bernstein, an expert on placebo and nocebo effects, explains how psychological factors can result in perceived physical harm. As co-author of The Nocebo Effect: When Words Make You Sick, Bernstein shares insights into the intersection of psychology, medicine, and public health. His research focuses on reducing opioid dependence by leveraging the placebo effect, while also exploring the ethical concerns surrounding nocebo-related side effects. Michael Bernstein, Ph.D., is an experimental psychologist and an Assistant Professor in The Department of Diagnostic Imaging at Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School. His work is focused on harnessing the placebo effect to reduce opioid use among pain patients. He is Director of the Medical Expectations Lab at Brown. He is the co-author of the new book The Nocebo Effect: When Words Make You Sick, with Charlotte Blease, Cosima Locher, and Walter Brown. Shermer and Bernstein discuss: the placebo and nocebo effects, brain imaging, and the ethics of using these phenomena in medicine. Bernstein discusses the biology and psychology behind these effects, touching on notable cases such as Voodoo deaths and Havana Syndrome. Other subjects include psychogenic illnesses, patient-clinician interactions, alternative medicine, and how expectations can amplify or mitigate pain, anxiety, and depression. The conversation also delves into anticipatory nausea, psychotherapy, and the impact of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Can sugar pills heal or harm? Neuroscientist Dr. Helena Hartmann unravels the mysteries of placebo and nocebo effects on this Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by neuroscientist, psychologist, and science communicator Dr. Helena Hartmann of University Hospital Essen! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Placebo and nocebo effects are powerful psychological phenomena that can have a significant impact on health outcomes. Placebos can lead to positive effects, while nocebos can cause negative effects, even without any active medical ingredients. Expectations play a crucial role in placebo and nocebo effects. Positive expectations can enhance treatment outcomes, while negative expectations can diminish or even reverse the effects of otherwise effective medications. These effects are not just "in our heads" but involve complex psychoneurobiological processes. They can trigger real physiological changes in the brain and body, including the release of pain-relieving substances and alterations in pain transmission in the spinal cord. Social and environmental factors, such as the price of medication, invasiveness of treatment, and information from others (including social media), can influence the strength of placebo and nocebo effects. We can harness the power of placebo effects to improve medical treatments. By fostering positive expectations, healthcare providers can potentially enhance treatment efficacy, reduce required medication dosages, and minimize side effects. Patients can also benefit by maintaining an optimistic outlook and engaging in positive self-talk about their treatments. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Bøker: Langer har skrevet flere bøker om mindfulness og relaterte emner, inkludert "Mindfulness," "The Power of Mindful Learning," og "Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility."

Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I'm a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. This podcast episode features a discussion between Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist, and James Buckley, a hypnotherapist, about the placebo and nocebo effects. They explain that the placebo effect is the brain's ability to create a positive physical response without any actual medication, while the nocebo effect is the negative response from a sham treatment. They discuss research showing the powerful impact of these mind-body effects, even on conditions like high cholesterol and statin side effects. The conversation highlights how the brain's beliefs and expectations can profoundly influence physical outcomes, and emphasizes the importance of empowering patients through techniques like meditation and hypnosis to harness this mind-body connection for better health. The podcast encourages listeners to explore the untapped potential of the mind to find "solace, peace, harmony, and resolution" in addressing health challenges.

In this episode, Dr. Jonathan Chung and Dr. John Stenberg discuss the biopsychosocial model of pain and its impact on cervical chiropractic care. They emphasize the importance of individualized care and the limitations of the biopsychosocial model. They share personal experiences and highlight the role of stratifying patients and understanding biomarkers. The conversation also explores the nocebo effect and its impact on patient psychology. The episode concludes with a discussion on teaching patients to control pain and understand flare-ups. This conversation explores the importance of managing patient expectations, avoiding nocebos, and using patient-centered communication in upper cervical chiropractic care. It emphasizes the need to be mindful of language and to avoid using scare tactics or exaggerated claims. The conversation also highlights the significance of the therapeutic relationship and understanding the patient's life and circumstances. By focusing on empowering patients and promoting their resilience, chiropractors can provide more effective and meaningful care. Takeaways: The biopsychosocial model of pain expands our understanding of pain medicine beyond just tissue injury and emphasizes the complex interactions of biological, psychological, and social factors. Individualized care is crucial in cervical chiropractic to address both the bio and psychosocial aspects of a patient's condition. Stratifying patients based on their presentation and understanding relevant biomarkers can help provide more targeted and effective treatment. The nocebo effect, where negative beliefs and expectations can lead to negative outcomes, should be considered when communicating with patients. Teaching patients to control pain and understand flare-ups can empower them to manage their condition and improve their outcomes. Manage patient expectations by emphasizing their progress and the strategies in place to address any issues that may arise. Avoid using scare tactics or exaggerated claims that can create unnecessary anxiety and dependency on chiropractic care. Be mindful of language and use patient-centered communication that focuses on empowering patients and promoting their resilience. Develop a strong therapeutic relationship with patients, taking the time to understand their life circumstances and providing support beyond chiropractic adjustments.
