Greg's success in university resulted in being awarded a graduate scholarship (NSERC) to the University of Waterloo to be one of only two Masters students per year studying at the Occupational Biomechanics Laboratory, a world leader in Spine Biomechanics, exercise prescription and athletic performance. As a faculty member at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Greg developed a research program that produced more than 20 publications on exercise biomechanics, golf fitness and the science of manual therapy. She is so passionate and knowledgable helping support many families who face a host of challenges like torticollis, gas, colic, reflux, oral restrictions. Dr. Tara brings so much love and passion to her practice and the families she serves. We cover a lot in this episode, tongue ties, gut dysfunction, pet peeves we are seeing with medical advice being given to families and so much more! It's a very informative episode. Bio:Dr. Tara is a perinatal and pediatric chiropractor and co-owner of Encompass Health & Wellness, a family wellness clinic in midtown Kitchener. Dr. Tara has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Dalhousie University and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Dr. Tara began her work with infants around 6 years ago when her postpartum patients started bringing in their little ones for issues such as torticollis, gas, colic, reflux etc. A few years into treating these concerns through adjustments and soft tissue therapy she started to notice an increasing trend of infants being diagnosed with tongue and lip ties. Having no prior background in oral ties, she started a deep dive into their impact on her littlest patients and how to make positive change through chiropractic care.  Fast forward to today and Dr. Tara's practice is about 50% pediatric care with a strong focus on managing infants with oral ties and the sequelae of issues that present as a result. Using adjustments, cranial work, soft tissue therapy, parent education and cross referrals with other professionals such as osteopaths, dentists, lactation consultants etc. Dr. Tara has been able to help many families navigate the challenge that is oral ties. Greg Lehman…On Becoming a Movement OptimistJoin the conversation on Movement Optimism as Physiotherapist and strength and conditioning expert, Greg Lehman chats to Raphael Bender about Movement Optimism and the idea that everything is biomedically driven. We discuss why he prefers a comprehensive capacity approach in addition to looking to specific evidence-based research when helping clients prevent pain and injury. Greg also dives into the idea of muscle ‘dysfunction' as a cause of pain, and why he never vilifies an activity or movement. What You Will Learn:The philosophy of Movement Optimism and Greg Lehman's framework for working within a biopsychosocial model Why biomechanics research invalidates the idea of dysfunction in muscles Why we shouldn't worry about scapula dyskinesias despite what a recent study suggests Greg's thoughts on the relationship between knee valgus and ACL injury The dichotomy of loading muscles and why it's a misapplication of research Explaining PainThe fact that pilates clients are often looking for a definitive diagnosis for their pain is often a barrier to movement specialists using a biopsychosocial approach. Greg Lehman and Raph discuss why it is so critical to give clients a comprehensive explanation for their pain, in clear vocabulary that takes into account their life holistically, and how the Movement Optimism approach helps practitioners do that. Whole-Person WellbeingWe unpack the idea of reframing pain under an emergent approach rather than a linear one, how we can take a client's lifestyle into account when discussing their concerns. As Pilates teachers, it is important to understand that we should not only be looking at research specific to their rotator cuff, or their hamstring or other areas of pain, but we also need to get the low-down on their stress levels, their sleep, and their all-round wellbeing to effectively support them. Why ‘Vulnerable' Muscles are a MythGreg also discusses the misapprehension perpetuated by some fitness influencers that certain muscles are ‘vulnerable' in some way. Just because you see something happen once or twice in practice doesn't make it a truth — jumping to faulty conclusions is dangerous for us and our clients. We explore why unvalidated theories get accepted as truth and how to bust baseless myths with good quality evidence-based research. About Greg Lehman:Greg is a Canadian physiotherapist, chiropractor, and strength and conditioning specialist treating musculoskeletal disorders within a biopsychosocial model. He is incredibly well-read, a highly skilled educator. And he's funny. Before his clinical career, Greg received a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council MSc graduate scholarship and became one of only two students each year to train with Professor Stuart McGill in his Occupational Biomechanics Laboratory, subsequently published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers in the manual therapy and exercise biomechanics field. He was an assistant professor at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College teaching a graduate-level course in Spine Biomechanics and Instrumentation as well as conducting more than 20 research experiments while supervising more than 50 students. Welcome to another episode of The Words Matter Podcast. On this episode I speak with Dr Peter Stilwell. Peter holds a Kinesiology degree from the University of Calgary, Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, and graduate degrees (MSc and PhD) from Dalhousie University. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at McGill University and his research interests include pain, suffering, and patient-clinician communication. Many of you will be familiar with Peter's excellent paper with Katherine Hartman on moving beyond the BPS model toward a 5-E enactivist approach to understanding and managing MSK pain.In problematising the BPS model in the way that it did, the paper really caused me to reflect on how I viewed and implemented the spirit of BPS  into my work. I know that the paper was a similar stimulus for many other of my own colleagues and clinicians across the MSK professions. So in this episode we: Delve into some of the underlying assumptions and lack of theoretical foundations of the BPS model and how enactivism addresses these gaps. We talk about some of the issues of the BPS model in regards to its vagueness in its application and its tendency to crudely separate out complex component properties of the experience of pain. We also get into metaphors and how his qualitative research has illuminated the way in which metaphors are used and interpreted by both clinicians and patients. Whilst it was my intention to drill down into his paper and enactivist model, time got the better of us- and I'll be sure to invite Peter on for a follow up episode. As ever with these podcasts, I enjoyed every minute of talking with Peter. His expression “I just wants to do it all” exemplifies his passion, determination and productivity in the furthering if knowledge in person-centred MSK practice. His excitement and hunger is both palpable and infectious and have no doubt he will further build on his already significant contribution to knowledge in this area.Find Peter on Twitter @Peter_StilwellAnd more about his work hereSubscribe to www.wordsmatter-education.com , and if you liked the podcast, you'l love the Words Matter online course in effective language and communication when managing back pain - ideal for all MSK therapists and students.Help the podcast grow and don't miss an episode- Subscribe, Rate and Share. Instagram @Wordsmatter_educationTwitter @WordsClinicalFacebook Words Matter - Improving Clinical Communication ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
