I mount a defence of turn-based combat before discussing three of my favourites in the genre: Final Fantasy VII, Shadow Hearts Covenant and Shin Megami Tensei V.~~~Support Haus of Decline on Patreon!Visit hausofdecline.comNostalgia is fleeting, but @hausofdecline is foreverPlease email complaints, suggestions, or requests to hausofdecline@gmail.com Thank you for listening.Explicit Content Warning. Today we look at one of the Playstation 2's best RPGs, an unsung masterpiece–and sequel–called Shadow Hearts Covenant. Using the atypical setting of World War as a backdrop, Shadow Hearts mixes Lovecraftian lore with a fair dose of anime humor, resulting in a truly unforgettable experience. I talk to Twitch streamer C3nric about Shadow Hearts … Continue reading Dark Shadows – Shadow Hearts: Covenant (2004) →

This is probably the single most ominous episode of the podcast that has come out to date. Tune in in two weeks when every single host gets hoisted for what they say on this one.
T-T-T-Two Matts? It's double trouble as Japan repeats itself with reused bosses, returns to dungeons, and entering an identical volcano twice. And as a bonus - all sorts of technical difficulties! There are no notes this week because everyone involved in the construction of this episode wants to die. Special Guest: Michael Mays.

We at Retronauts regret to inform you once again that something is very old. (Hey, we're just doing our job.) That's right: The PlayStation 2 turns 18 this month, and to celebrate its passage into adulthood we've put together two whole hours of podcasting fun about Sony's market-dominating beast of a console. Just how important was DVD support? And will any console ever outsell the PS2? On this podcast, Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Henry Gilbert, and Matthew Jay rev up their Emotion Engines and attempt to describe just how indescribably huge Sony's sequel system was in its heyday. [Note: All of the music in this episode is from the PlayStation 2 game Shadow Hearts: Covenant.]
Robert and Alva sit down with the multi-talented Jeremy Blaustein (Metal Gear Solid, Snatcher, Silent Hill 2, Shadow Hearts Covenant) to discuss his twenty-five year career in the Japanese games industry. We discuss the ups, the downs, the role of the translator as creator, the dilemma of translating Trump, and kiboshed Snatcher remakes and sequels.Check out Jeremy's localization company at Babydragon.jp. Welcome to Japan! The Retro Encounter crew continue their epic quest in Shadow Hearts: Covenant by docking into Japan. The game takes a slightly more serious turn as we focus on a lot of the themes of the game, such as the characters relationships and their morals.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant is the second entry in cult classic RPG series, and often the most talked about one. Set during World War I, this game is one of a kind and you'd be hard pushed to find anything else like it.
