In this episode of Weird Finance, Paco talks to Shaun Evaristo about the path he took to become a dancer and choreographer, how he's overcome his fear of numbers and the idea that he's bad with math, and how he's navigating through the biggest loss of his career thus far. Shaun Evaristo (@shaunevaristo) is a Filipino American dancer and choreographer. He has worked with well-known artists such as Justin Bieber, Pharrell Williams, Miguel, Tae Yang, and much more. Creator of the dance brand Movement Lifestyle Shaun continues to carve in his craft using movement to access self discovery, creativity and expression. An international instructor for over 20 years, community will always lie at the heart of sharing his passion for dance. This episode also features The Price Report, a short segment with Michael “Frosti” Snow (@FrostiFresh), where he takes us on a journey, examining the cost of one thing in the hopes that it helps us have a better understanding of well, everything. This week we're exploring the cost of tipping. A special thanks to the talented and generous Ramsey Yount, for producing, editing, and sound designing this episode. How could we identify and solidify personal style as a creator in such an overwhelmingly saturated world? Ever wondered why Urban/LA Choreography has grown into the cultural (TikTok) phenomenon it is today? While choreography works differently according to specific genres, creative capacity runs parallel across all choreographers. Obviously, the only way to find out is by diving deep into the mind of one! Adam Tan is a dancer, choreographer and instructor based in Brooklyn, USA. Beginning his journey as a pole dancer in Malaysia, he has evolved into an internationally touring performer dancing alongside the likes of Shaun Evaristo, Bam Martin and Aye Hasegawa. Currently, he trains and performs with Southern Sole and Hood Nation. Concluding the month of Choreography, this episode explores the differences in choreographic styles between genres, as well as tips to keep evolving as a creator. Ready to think like a choreographer? ***WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO EXPRESS OUR APOLOGIES FOR THE AUDIO. THERE ARE DEFINITELY A FEW CRINGY MOMENTS BUT WE ARE AWARE! WE ARE LEARNING AND FIGURING OUT THIS PODCAST THING ONE STEP AT A TIME. THANKS FOR BEARING WITH US!** In today's Episode we feature the man, the myth, the legend, SHAUN EVARISTO! Dancer for artists like Vanessa Hudgens, Justin Bieber & Korean group Big Bang. The creator of Generation 2, The Company along with Pat Cruz, and the world renown Movement Lifestyle. He talks about his dance journey from the bottom to the top, from humble beginnings in dance class in high school as the only boy in school, to creating Movement Lifestyle. I really wanted this post to summarize the episode but in the process of putting the summary together I realized A LOT of what he says are quotable things that are probably best served as items to think about. I will not list all of the quotes but I urge you to take a listen and take your own notes as it goes. With that said, here are a few that absolutely needed mention: “I never built ML for myself. I never built ML to make money. I never built ML to….I never wanted a studio. I never did. I only wanted to serve and give back to dance because it gave me so much and I needed to find a way to return the favor. — Sage of Mt. EP. 54 Kinjaz PodKast LIVE - “Past, Present, Future” | D-Trix, Lyle Beniga, and Kida The Great We hosted our first ever LIVE pod at @arenadancecomp LA Camp! To do our first ever pod in front of a live audience, it was only fitting to stack the session with an incredible panel of guests. Shout out to @dtrix @lylebeniga, and for his first time on the pod, @kidathegreat for coming through and blessing the conversation! D-Trix and Lyle have been putting it down for the urban dance game for well over a decade, and they both continue to push the envelope as artists and educators, being very pivotal taste makers for this culture. We go in depth about the constant search for inspiration, mindset, discipline and what the future looks like for themselves as artists and for our culture as a whole. Along with guest co-host @_anthonylee_ , we have a super insightful, hilarious, and always inspiring exchange with this incredible panel. Whether if you're 5 or if you're 50. Like if you can connect with people and make them feel comfortable and make the feel interested and that to me sort of when I look at it now on a broader scale everything is like that. Even within just regular academic school some of the most boring subjects that I had in college were the most interesting because I loved my professors. I think like I took like a history of Los Angeles Economics or something it was just very bland topic and I ended up doing a whole honors research paper on it because my professor was really cool. Happy top of the week! Today, we have an OG dance community head that you might recognize as the resident DJ on @theellenshow. Stephen @sir_twitch_alot Boss came from the grassroots dance community and broke his way into Hollywood. Twitch, has done everything from competing on shows like Star Search, The Wade Robson Project, and So You Think Can Dance, and found himself as a runner-up in all those shows. He didn’t let the loss from these shows take him off his path to make his mark for dance. He kept pushing, and in doing so found opportunities to venture into other disciplines such as acting and hosting. The gold about Twitch’s story is not all the accolades and projects he’s been on, but really his sharply focused “WHY.” In this chat, Twitch really breaks down the importance of being honest and true with yourself. He says that at the end of the day, the “hustle” just becomes noise that will never quiet down until you figure out what is authentic to you. Learning how to use your tool. How do you express or find it in your own voice? Be genuine. Whats it all for? Whats the purpose? Finding the relatability. 18:40 - Dance history time. 23:18 - Finally answering about becoming a dance professional traveling and teaching. 25:05 - Traveling and teaching being a possible career vs pleasing parents and finishing school. 28:15 - Along that thought too I also get questions from younger kids or even kids in college who are like, "Dance is only thing that brings me happiness, how can I do this thing or should I like finish school." They're asking not even me, I'm sure you guys you know, "What do I do?" and in that sense its like um…I think for me is… 28:38 - Count the Cost. You know like its not laid in your lap. If I say yeah do it, then you're gonna succeed…If you really wanna pursue and like make this your mission to be happy and give up things like that I'm honestly not telling you to quit school. School is so important but like its really counting the cost like what do you wanna pursue and how hard are you going to work at this because every dancer or aspiring person that you see in front of you that you look up to, even the men in this room, is like we counted the cost and we said this is what we love and we're gonna work our blood sweat and tears to make it happen so even in that sense its like, are you willing to do that too? 30:07 - Thoughts on inspiration? 31:00 - If you can find a way to like, scale it, and look around the corner and be like hmm, how can I pass this? Maybe I just won't go this way I'll take the long way around. You know its like finding new inspiration for yourself to see the world in a way that you never had before. 41:16 - Working out your dance muscle. Its like a muscle right? Its like if you want to keep doing what you do, you maintain it or you make it stronger so like, working out 3 - 4 times a week whether it be like strength conditioning, endurance training or literally just repetition of moves is definitely important and key. 41:54 - Dance is our sport! 44:20 - Approach to choreographical expression. 45:30 - Aspirations outside of dance/future goals. 53:00 - Divide. I think in the current state of our country its just undeniable that we're divided and its um theres a lot of hate and just ignorance going around. Less of that more of empathy. I think if people had more natural empathy to put their feet into the shoes another man the more understanding there would be of one another. GOLDEN RULE: Always strive to learn something new. On this special episode of the Kinjaz PodKast we are SUPER DUPER STOKED to have the multitalented, Lyle Beniga! From dancing for artists like Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott & the list goes on… Actually you can find his resume here: http://beniga.com/about/lyle. …to teaching literally all around the world, he's created his own BRAND, this guy is really winning at life. Lyle tells us about his journey from the East Coast Collegiate Community and going to college for Engineering to proposing a business plan to his parents for his need to pursue dance in LA. **WARNING** WE ARE STILL FIGURING OUT THE KINKS HERE AND THERE BUT PERIODICALLY YOU'LL HEAR A LITTLE CRACKLE DURING SOME OF THE DIALOGUE. WE SINCERELY THANK YOU FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK WE'VE BEEN GETTING. WE'RE LISTENING, WE HEAR YOU, AND WE'RE COMMITTED TO BRINGING YOU GREAT STORIES FROM REALLY GREAT PEOPLE. ENJOY! SHOW NOTES: http://www.cultureshockdc.org Margareta Chughtai (formerly Eysel) - Founder and Executive Director of Culture Shock DC. Tony Tzar: https://www.instagram.com/tonytzar Zach Lattimore: #zachlattimorechoreography "I would much rather struggle in LA…to reach a goal than in DC for sure…" Even though he had a timeline in which he had to accomplish certain things or to just be able to prove to himself or to his parents that he could do it or not, he still didn't feel like there was so much weight on his shoulders. He felt there was a lot of freedom to grasp onto. The pressure he felt to finish school wasn't there so he could solely focus on why he wanted to be in LA. Now obviously that sounds like the mentality most students or hungry dancers want when giving this lifestyle a shot. Of course he wanted to book jobs and dance but he really goes into depth how important it was for him to be a sponge and absorb the training that was being offered to him. He went out and experienced the dance scene. Went to parties, clubs, freestyled & "sessioned." He was able to keep a level head by sticking around his mentors, Jayson Wright, Super Dave, Phi Nguyen. He was older when he arrived in LA so he had a level of discipline in why he wanted to be in LA. These guys are legends. If you don't know them…here you go. Jayson Wright: https://www.instagram.com/jaysondwright Super Dave: https://www.instagram.com/theonlysuperdave/ Phi Nguyen: https://www.instagram.com/phi_jbwkz/ He mentioned booking Hillary Duff's The Dignity tour and how it was a catalyst for him turning the tide in his career. You might find someone familiar at 2:32. Hilary Duff - Play With Fire (Live) Dignity Tour After booking that tour he found he wanted to start teaching more. He was already creating and putting choreography on friends and fellow dancers, but it was time for him to start giving what he had to offer. "..its time, its time, I feel like I have something to offer. I didn't wanna teach something if I didn't feel like I had something to offer…if I didn't have something to say with my movement." "I really wanted to make an impact in that way… …I knew it wasn't time to teach when I'm still a sponge. If you're gonna tell a yellow belt to teach, you're gonna be scared outta you're sh*ts…" "…You're expected to know these things, I cant go and ya know, show you how to ya know, do the wu-tang or anything like that, you know and break down all these other grooves and break it down for 30 mins cuz I have a routine, this is a choreography class…" I found this quote to be very impactful. If you don't know how to do a step that the choreographer briefly mentions and moves on…those are probably foundational movements that dancers pursuing most choreography styles should know. In this example that would probably be a prerequisite for taking that class. You probably won't find the syllabus for these classes with the prereq's listed but its just a good rule of thumb to take foundational classes and recognize the variations in those steps to figure out more advanced steps. Break it down. If you can't find the foundational classes; the Internet is your oyster. JUVEN-LYLE DELINQUENT. He even bullies his friends in their own videos. Shaun Evaristo | Royce Da 5'9 - My Own Planet http://kinjazpodkast.com/ep2 Shaun Evaristo: http://instagram.com/shaunevaristo "A lot of things didn't come naturally for me, even like learning choreography, my pickup was okay but it wasn't like THEE best. I just worked at it, worked at it, worked at it. Constantly constantly. Even being clean or you know, I saw all these weaknesses, and its just like picking at it, always picking at it. Before I used to be like this super fast dancer but to the point where I was too ahead of the beat. And it took someone to tell me that to really hone into that and try to be patient and try to take my time…you know, the idea of texture and all that and listening to music. It was all a process for me…" 44:25 to listen in on the Kinjaz X BNGA "ambush pack" Collaboration KINJAZ X BNGA | #AMBUSHPACK @machingunkelly @troyboimusic KINJAZ X BNGA | Ambush Pack Singapore | #AMBUSHPACK2 (PART 1) KINJAZ X BNGA | Ambush Pack Los Angeles | #AMBUSHPACK2 (PART 2) BALANCE: 46:14 I really feel what Lyle is saying during this part of the conversation. Referencing even back to Ep:3 with Anthony and Mike we talked about "Curiosity vs. Passion" and we have a pretty similar conversation here about that. Are we beginning to see a trend? In short no. Its validation. Be curious my friends. http://instagram.com/lylebeniga http://instagram.com/bnga_ http://bngabrand.com http://beniga.com/about/lyle Field of Vision. FOV. **WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO EXPRESS OUR APOLOGIES FOR THE AUDIO. Evaristo This quote to me is specially impactful. I feel like I resonate with this so much because for me I've danced for more than half of my life specifically because I wanted to, not because it gave me money. Dance was that escape away from work, away from school, away from troubled relationships, away from everything. Dance means so much to some of us that we need to figure out ways of sharing the love to the world. Here are a few more quotes: "I am just going to do, and by doing I will have the by-product of doing & creating; I will naturally achieve something." "Write down everything by hand." "Self Discipline is Self Love." "Move is Life." SHOW NOTES: “I am in constant practice every single day of my self work, thru my self work I will benefit the whole." — Shaun Mike's Audiobook: "Power of Habit" - Charles Duhigg SHAUN'S VEGAN CUISINES.
