On this week's episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with Ben “BTEK” Chung, co-founder of Kinjaz and former member of the Jabbawockeez, a world-famous dance group who first gained popularity from their 2006 appearance on “America's Best Dance Crew”. Ben holds nothing back in this deep conversation ranging from impactful childhood traumas, to why he started dancing, learning how to cope with loss, and leading a life full of grace and empathy. His recovery from grief and trauma has made an impact on many other's road to healing through his virtual dance class studio, Kinjaz and the podcast he hosts, “STEEZY”. Through his struggles, Ben has learned how his creative expression can be much more than a hobby, and serve as a cathartic release and grounding force. We would love to hear from you! Ben is notably known for being a member of the Jabbawockeez who had won the first season of America's Best Dance Crew and which also had the largest influence on modern dance crews right now. Ben would compete again in season 8 of Amerca's Best Dance Crew along with Anthony Lee, Mike Song, Vinh Nguyen, M-Pact and Villin Lor, Darren Wong, and Pat Cruz in 2015. About Kinjaz: Established in 2010, Kinjaz is a band of brothers on a quest to fearlessly explore the depths of their imagination and artistic purpose. With over 30 total members, including individuals who specialize in other skills besides dance, they consider ourselves an “Artist's brotherhood,” and are known for their signature intricate choreography style and creative storytelling through dance and new media. Their shared objective is to cultivate “Kin at all costs”, support each other to reach their highest collective potential, and to positively impact the world with their time and abilities in the most fun way possible. It is a pleasure to welcome actor and dancer Lawrence Kao to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born in Hacienda Heights, California, his parents groomed Lawrence to become a pediatrician. However, when his mother forced him to play musical instruments as a kid, his path toward a future in the arts began. He received a bachelor's degree in Theater at the University of California at Irvine. While at the university, he expanded his passion for dance and joined the Kaba Modern dance group. Lawrence and the group found themselves in the national spotlight when they auditioned for the inaugural season of MTV's American Best Dance Crew. Week after week, the group's impeccable choreography impressed judges JC Chasez, Lil Mama, and Shane Sparks, and the audience and Kaba Modern took home third place. After graduating from the University of California at Irvine, Lawrence worked at award-winning theater companies such as the Guthrie Theater, East West Players, South Coast Repertory, and San Diego Repertory. In addition to joining the dance group Kinjaz, Lawrence continued to land roles on several popular television shows such as Hawaii 5-0, Law & Order: SUV, NCIS: Los Angeles & New Orleans, The Originals, and The Walking Dead. Recently, Lawrence Kao was a series regular on Netflix's Wu Assassins, where he portrayed Tommy Wan. He reprised the role in the 2022 original film Fistful of Vengeance. He joined the cast of the CW's latest Walker spin-off: Walker Independence, as Kai. Kai is a newcomer to the town of Independence, looking to restart his life. Actors Katherine McNamara, Katie Findlay, Matt Barr, and Justin Johnson Cortez also star in the show. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lawrence Kao spoke about portraying Tommy Wah in Netflix's Wu Assassins and Fistful of Vengeance, plus teased Walker: Independence fans about Kai's journey during the first season.

In 2015, the Kinjaz blew up on Season 8 of America's Best Dance Crew, massively changing the industry of dance and how Asians are perceived in media and entertainment. As admirers, we saw how impactful it was for our Asian American peers to see dancers with faces like theirs, tear it up on stage.  Mike Song and Anthony Lee are two of the founding members of the Kinjaz and in this episode, they share with us the crazy and inspiring journey they've been on (How did they go from dance performances to plant-based noodles? What is the dance scene in China like? What was the first dance move they learned? What would they be doing if not dance?). Listen in to find out! In this episode I talk to Ben Chung who is a cofounder of Kinjaz, cofounder of Hitbeats app, and founder of the Chosun clothing brand. He used to be a member of the Jabbawockeez back in the day when they changed the world through dance when they won the America's Got Talent show. He shares his unconventional journey as an Korean American of making a living through dance and turning his love for dancing into a full-time business. He started off learning Kpop dance moves, performed at his church talent performance, and eventually ended up joining dance groups that have made an international impact in the dance community by showing that dance teams can be the centerpiece of a show instead of just being back up dancers for a famous artist or musician. Ben shares how his curiosity and ambition has led him down a path that he ended up creating his own path that doesn't fit the mold of getting a degree and a job after school. He shares how it's important to learn the things that you are curious about, discover what you're passionate about, and keep pursuing your path and calling in life. Ben shares how it's important to take risks to learn the things that you are passionate about and the path to making money will open up for you since you can make money doing anything nowadays. Hope Ben's story encourages you to find your own path in life, forge your own future, and live a life with no regrets. We regret the things that we didn't do more than the things that we did when we grow old.
