We are in the information age and I don't believe there are any new topics and there is little, actual new information. But we can discover new insights and new angles and information that is more relevant for the current culture. And sometimes I just interest myself in an individual and their role within a topic and I want to hear their take on it. So with that said, in this episode I'm with Dr. Majid Fotuhi. Harper Collins, one of the world's big five publishers sent me a galley copy, which is a pre-copy before the book is actually published, of Majid's new book, “The Invincible Brain: The Clinically Proven Plan To Age-Proof Your Brain And Stay Sharp For Life.” I am very interested in brain health. I want to be cognitively sharp and able until my last breath. And I was interested in Majid's background. He  earned his PhD in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University and then his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School, two institutions I greatly respect. Majid is currently an adjunct professor at the Mind/Brain Institute at Johns Hopkins University, while also teaching at George Washington University and Harvard Medical School. With 37 years of experience in teaching, clinical practice, and neuroscience research, Majid is a pioneer in enhancing brain vitality and cognitive performance and he developed a “Brain Fitness Program” that targets lifestyle optimization and cognitive stimulation to improve memory, focus, and overall brain health. The program has delivered measurable success for patients dealing with memory loss due to aging, concussions, and ADHD.  Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial Learn more about your ad choices. Ginny Yurich sits down with neurologist and neuroscientist Dr. Majid Fotuhi to flip the script on what most of us assume about memory: it isn't something you either “have” or “lose”—it's a skill you can build. Drawing from decades of work with brain health, ADHD, concussion recovery, and cognitive decline, Dr. Fotuhi explains why everyday forgetfulness is often normal (and not an automatic sign of Alzheimer's), then gives a clear, doable framework for getting sharper at any age through his five pillars of brain health—exercise, sleep, nutrition, stress reduction, and brain training. You'll hear why movement supercharges the brain, why racquet sports and “thinking + motion” activities are especially powerful for kids and adults, how to make names and information stick by adding emotion and play, what's actually happening during menopause brain fog, and why optimism and purpose aren't just nice ideas—they're linked to real changes in the brain. This episode is practical, hopeful, and immediately motivating—you'll finish it feeling like your brain isn't fragile… it's trainable. So exciting!! Conversations about brain health have been dominated by a competing mix of fatalism and over-promising, with aging framed as inevitable decline and "brain optimisation" sold through weak evidence. So how should we think about cognition across the lifespan? In this episode, we explore the idea that neuroplasticity does not disappear in adulthood, but instead continues to respond, for better or worse, to repeated behaviours and exposures. Much of what is labelled age-related cognitive decline may in fact reflect an accumulation of modifiable risk factors. We also dig into how to critically evaluate brain-health claims and how lifestyle pillars such as exercise, sleep, diet, stress reduction and cognitive training fit into a coherent framework. The discussion extends to emerging multimodal intervention programs, their promising signals and their clear limitations, and to a broader, multifactorial view of Alzheimer's disease that moves beyond a narrow amyloid-centric model. Finally, we examine the role of genetics, including ApoE4, and why genetic risk does not equate to biological destiny, even later in life. Dr. Majid Fotuhi is a neurologist and an adjunct professor at the Johns Hopkins Mind/Brain Institute. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed a Ph.D. in neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University. #689: Most people think forgetting a name means their brain is failing.  Dr. Majid Fotuhi, a neurologist who taught at Johns Hopkins and Harvard, sees thousands of patients convinced they have Alzheimer's – only to discover they're dealing with poor sleep or stress. Dr. Fotuhi joins us to break down the difference between cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. He explains why chronic stress physically shrinks your hippocampus — the thumb-sized memory center in your brain — and how twelve weeks of lifestyle changes reversed cognitive decline in 84 percent of his patients. We talk about the five hidden taxes draining your brain: sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep, junk food, chronic stress and mental laziness. Scrolling social media after work counts as mental laziness, even if your day job involves intense focus. Dr. Fotuhi offers a different framework: five pillars that compound over time. Exercise ranks first because it multiplies mitochondria in your brain cells, reduces inflammation and generates new neurons in your hippocampus. Walking 10,000 steps daily cuts Alzheimer's risk by 50 percent. Sleep comes second. Your brain rinses itself during deep sleep, flushing out amyloid — the core protein in Alzheimer's disease. One night of poor sleep increases amyloid in your brain. We cover nutrition (skip the junk food debate), mindset (heart rate variability breathing reduces Alzheimer's footprints) and brain training. Dr. Fotuhi memorizes 70 names in a single lecture and explains his technique for remembering credit card numbers using mental imagery. The conversation covers London taxi drivers who grew their hippocampus by memorizing 10,000 streets, why stress management beats supplements, and how Swedish students learning Arabic increased their brain volume in three months. Send us a textMost people think memory loss is a downhill slide you can't stop. We don't. In this conversation with neurologist and neuroscientist Dr. Majid Fotuhi, we map out a twelve‑week blueprint that measurably improves memory, focus, and even grows hippocampal volume by targeting the real drivers of decline: poor sleep, chronic stress, insulin resistance, hearing loss, inactivity, and hidden medical issues.Dr. Majid Fotuhi is a pioneering neurologist, neuroscientist, and professor with more than thirty-five years of experience in brain health, memory, neuroplasticity, and the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. His work bridges research, clinical innovation, and public education. He earned his PhD in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University, completed medical training at Harvard Medical School, and returned to Johns Hopkins for his neurology residency. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University. An author and communicator, Dr. Fotuhi has written several books and is known for making complex science accessible. His excellence in teaching earned him the American Academy of Neurology's prestigious award. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals, been presented at major conferences, and cited widely by scientists worldwide.Dr. Fotuhi has created a twelve-week program that has helped thousands of patients with memory loss, brain fog, concussion, mild cognitive impairment, and early Alzheimer's disease. His expertise has been featured by CNN, NBC News, the Today Show, ABC News, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Times (London). We start by clarifying what mild cognitive impairment is, how it differs from dementia, and why so many cases are preventable. Dr. Fotuhi explains the “type 3 diabetes” model—how decades of sugar spikes and inflammation erode the blood‑brain barrier and starve neurons of a stable environment. Then we get practical. You'll hear how a personalized “brain portfolio” guides treatment: VO2 max testing to shape exercise, sleep studies and CPAP when needed, targeted brain training that matches deficits, and labs for vitamin D, B12, and omega‑3 status. The results? Early wins in two to three weeks, statistically significant gains at six and twelve, and habits that stick. We don't stop at diet and steps. Oral health impacts cognition by limiting whole foods and increasing inflammation; chewing itself engages neural circuits. Hearing loss quietly accelerates decline—hearing aids can move people from mild impairment back to normal. Add a simple, sustainable food approach—ditch ultra‑processed foods, eat vegetables, legumes, fruits, quality proteins, and healthy fats—and consider targeted supplementation with DHA/EPA omega‑3s and corrected D and B12 levels. Along the way, we address why amyloid hogged the spotlight, and point to powerful data: the Lancet's estimate that 45% of dementia cases are preventable and the American Heart Association's claim that 80% of strokes can be avoided. If you want a sharper brain by summer, this is your starting line. Subscribe, share this with someone you love, and leave a review telling us the one habit you'll change this week. Your future brain will thank you.Links:Majid Fotuhi, MD, PhD: https://drfotuhi.com/https://krieger.jhu.edu/mbi/directory/majid-fotuhi/https://neurogrow.com/about-us/dr-majid-fotuhi-md-phd/https://psychology.columbian.gwu.edu/majid-fotuhiTweet me @realdrhamrahIG @drhamrah

Majid also breaks down historical shifts—from Lipulekh during the King's rule, to the role of President Ram Chandra Poudel during the recent Gen Z movement. Other major topics include: how the next President should be elected, the history of UML and Maoist movements, the significance of NOTA in elections, and what happens if future elections don't take place on time. Mike welcomes Emirati filmmaker Majid Al Ansari to discuss The Vile (2025), his long-awaited return to the director's chair after nearly a decade. Known as Hoba in Arabic, the film is a psychological horror story about Amani, a wife and mother whose world collapses when her husband brings home a second wife with seemingly supernatural powers. Drawing on myths and superstitions surrounding polygamy, Al Ansari literalizes whispered fears into a chilling tale of possession, betrayal, and domestic dread. Mike and Majid talk about his journey from his acclaimed debut Zinzana to producing and directing for television, his cinephile passions, and how The Vile takes folklore and turns it into unnerving, cinematic horror.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Lyse Doucet speaks to Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, about the future of Iran's nuclear programme and its government. The interview took place in the country's capital Tehran after Iran's twelve-day war with Israel. Both sides fired missiles into each other's territories, with hundreds killed as military sites were destroyed and civilian infrastructure badly damaged.Israel first attacked Iran on 13 June, claiming Iran was close to building a nuclear weapon. The conflict ended when the United States bombed three of Iran's nuclear sites. It is worth remembering, before any of the aggression started, talks about the future of Iran's nuclear programme were ongoing with the US. But they were overshadowed by a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency declaring Iran was in breach of its nuclear obligations and questioned why Iran was enriching uranium to such high levels. For now, there's a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Majid Takht-Ravanchi explains why he thinks it will hold and what it will take for diplomacy with the United States to resume in good faith. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. The best interviews from the BBC. You can listen on the BBC World Service, Mondays and Wednesdays at 0700 GMT.
