He could not be upset with Christine because he was having such a gleeful time at Jabbawockeez. Another time they squashed their differences as soon as Kiss erupted on stage and Paul Stanley gave cheeky speeches to the crowd. Her graduates currently travel the world, performing with stars such as Justin Beiber, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Usher, Beyoncé and Ellen. Her students have gone on to work for the White House and be seen on stages of MTV Music Awards, Nick Choice Awards, BET Awards & more, as well as to defy the statistical odds. In this episode of Why Change? you'll meet the inspiring entrepreneur, Tee Sandifer, and learn about how she grew her arts organization into a social change empire for youth, family and communities. Building upon knowledge of self and her community's needs, Miss Tee's studio has taken off in a phase of rapid growth since the pandemic hit in 2020, as she works to re-educate families and community leaders about the integral role the arts can play in everyday life. Co-hosts Ashraf and Jeff reflect on the work of Studio T and the social responsibility of young artists as public servants in their communities. In this episode you'll learn: 1) How we can and should expand our definition of what art is and where it happens. 2) How citizenship is an example of applied creativity. 3) An example of an arts organization's rapid growth and development during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic ABOUT TEE SANDIFER: A 30-year dance education expert specializing in pulling the best out of youth. She has developed some of Hollywood's most sought-after young dancers including THE 2016 winner of ‘So You Think You Can Dance', 2018 World of Dance stars, members of the Jabbawockeez, and more. But to her, some of the biggest successes of her program have come from students who finished high school and went on to become college graduates. As CEO and founder of Studio T Arts & Entertainment, PassToClass.com, California's Day of Dance, Side Hustle Academy, LVL Up, and @SweetTeeTime, Miss Tee's heartbeat is to champion the development of every child, build confidence and character as well as develop a conquering spirit that believes anything in possible. Sandifer's success in building this organization is the direct result of her own struggles and triumphs growing up in Richmond to a single mom raising five siblings. Early in her career as a teaching artist she consistently saw disinterested kids suddenly electrified by the prospect of learning a new move. Her studio in Sacramento now offers local students much more than dance lessons; at Studio T, young people from all backgrounds become skilled professionals in performance and stage crew, graphic and costume design, photography and videography, and of course, choreography. Sandifer's “whole person” approach addresses every young person's needs so they can heal, connect, and flourish as key participants in the creative marketplace. Her influence on the creative economy is not only evident in the work that she is doing today, but will have a lasting impact through the many lives she's changed on her life mission. She serves over 192,000 youth and 7,800 educators in school districts throughout Northern California and across the country every year through educational partnerships & enrichment programs related to physical as well as mental & emotional health. Her passionate advocacy for the arts has taken her to the State Capitol where she partners with local and national civic leaders to bring arts-inspired, socially and culturally relevant incentives to the academic day. Cephas, a Christian hip-hop artist and promoter who got his start in 2002 carving out a reputation for himself as a go-to producer for combining vintage vibes with modern sonics. His soulful jazzy productions garnished the attention of some of CHH's elite including Datin, Bizzle, Selah The Corner, Social Club, KB, Tedashi, and others. As a DJ Cephas has had the privilege of backing NF at Creationfest, and also co-hosted as a DJ for KB, Tedashi, Thousand Foot Krutch, and the Jabbawockeez dance crew with Nick Hall for the Pulse Cleveland Crusade.Artistically, he blends styles and pushes boundaries combining the vintage vibes of 90's Hip Hop, the aggressive build-ups & drops of modern Dubstep, with the deep grooves of Jazz/Funk fusion. Today we will discuss his back story, the state of Christian Hip-Hop, and why we believe it's so important that Christians stop participating in the beast system.Quick disclaimer: we will be using the abbreviation CHH to replace christian hip-hop bc 1) that's what the cool kids say & 2) it rolls off the tongue easier. So without further ado...There ain't nobody quite like this comfortable in his Christlikeness...welcome to the show, Cephas! The SocialRay Podcast: Stories of Entrepreneurs & Influencers
In this episode I talk to Ben Chung who is a cofounder of Kinjaz, cofounder of Hitbeats app, and founder of the Chosun clothing brand. He used to be a member of the Jabbawockeez back in the day when they changed the world through dance when they won the America's Got Talent show. He shares his unconventional journey as an Korean American of making a living through dance and turning his love for dancing into a full-time business. He started off learning Kpop dance moves, performed at his church talent performance, and eventually ended up joining dance groups that have made an international impact in the dance community by showing that dance teams can be the centerpiece of a show instead of just being back up dancers for a famous artist or musician. Ben shares how his curiosity and ambition has led him down a path that he ended up creating his own path that doesn't fit the mold of getting a degree and a job after school. He shares how it's important to learn the things that you are curious about, discover what you're passionate about, and keep pursuing your path and calling in life. Ben shares how it's important to take risks to learn the things that you are passionate about and the path to making money will open up for you since you can make money doing anything nowadays. Hope Ben's story encourages you to find your own path in life, forge your own future, and live a life with no regrets. We regret the things that we didn't do more than the things that we did when we grow old. In our Season 3 finale, we sit down and have an intimate conversation with award winning choreographer and our brother, Dylan Banares. We seize the opportunity to talk with him about how he really feels about dance and he answers a question that’s been on our minds ever since he started dancing, “did you feel pressured by us to become a dancer?”. Dylan reflects on his time as the youngest dancer amidst a team of older, more experienced dancers and we examine the origin of the competitive spirit between two brothers and overcoming the shadows of older siblings. We reminisce on our encounter with Filipino comedian Jo Koy, the Jabbawockeez, and that “kendama life”. We take a “detour” from the episode and use the podcast as a chance to reflect (and cry a little) about the loss of our studio and the effect it had on our bond as siblings. Dylan talks candidly about how the pandemic has compromised his dance goals and how he used this time to get in touch with his body and mind. He also shares his predictions on how the current pandemic will change the way we move forward with dance training. Devin and Michelle share their proudest moments of Dylan’s accomplishments, we talk about making it into the top 10 wearing pajamas, and proclaim that you’re never too old for dance. Dylan demonstrates some of his signature dance moves and shares his impression of the “quiet storm”. We do a round of rapid fire (or as Dylan calls it “medium fire”), we put the pressure on Dylan to tell us who his favorite sister is and he reveals his opinion on who is the favorite Banares child. We wrap the episode with Dylan’s take on what’s good in the dance community and we gush about how “especially special” this episode is.
