Anthony Lee is a young, rising star in the ultrarunning world who has a backstory that is as atypical you will hear for someone who has won very challenging major races like the Ouray 100 and Wyoming's Bighorn Mountain Wild and Scenic 100. Si te parece mal que yo vaya, regresaré"» (Números 22: 34). En uno de sus libros, Archibald Rutledge cuenta un incidente acerca del anciano Anthony Lee, un pastor afroamericano apreciado por su sabiduría. Había llegado un nuevo predicador a la ciudad y todos los jóvenes, o casi todos, iban a escuchar sus sermones. —Anthony, ¿qué le parece el nuevo predicador? —preguntó el señor Rutledge.—Bien —contestó Anthony—, a los jóvenes que van a escucharlo no les interesa la religión, solo quieren que alguien les diga cómo pecar y ser felices. ¿Pecar y ser feliz? Eso era exactamente lo que Balaam estaba tratando de hacer. Balac le había prometido todo lo que pudiera desear con tal de que maldijera a Israel, y Balaam deseaba las posesiones y los honores que Balac le prometía. No obstante, este deseo predominante estaba en conflicto con su lealtad a Dios. Como profeta no podía desentenderse fácilmente de la voluntad de Dios; pero como hombre veía el cumplimiento de sus sueños en las promesas de Balac. Por medio de distintas circunstancias del camino (el discurso de la asna y el encuentro con el ángel), el Señor trató de ebnseñarle que no podía pecar y ser feliz. ¿Aprendería la lección? Jesús afirmó: «Nadie puede servir a dos amos, porque odiará a uno y querrá al otro, o será fiel a uno y despreciará al otro. No se puede servir a Dios y a las riquezas» (Mateo 6: 24). Balaam había tomado el camino de la codicia y finalmente murió entre los enemigos del pueblo de Dios (Números 31: 8). Ciertamente no podemos «pecar y ser felices», pero sí podemos «obedecer y ser felices», porque la obediencia trae felicidad. A jóvenes como tú, la Escritura les promete: «Si son obedientes, Dios los bendecirá, [...] los hará felices» (Deuteronomio 7: 13, TLA). Obedecer es invitar a Dios a que tome el control de nuestras vidas, y donde Dios dirige solo puede haber bendición. Hoy podemos obedecer y ser felices, ¿aceptas el reto?
