Jamie also hosts a podcast for professional women, , covering topics often considered "too risky" at work -- salary negotiation, mental and reproductive health, office politics, social injustices, and unconventional ways smart women navigate their path forward despite inequitable and sexist cultures. A South Korean immigrant, Jamie first learned the value of self-advocacy from the example of her mother, who single-handedly raised three daughters while running a nail salon and speaking broken English in New Jersey. After attending Smith College to study East Asian Studies with a focus on Japanese, she built her career by capitalizing on her strengths, curiosity, and willingness to work in new industries. She worked as a buyer for a beauty products company, a junior analyst at a hedge fund trading firm, and in multiple roles within tech startups. Jamie described her experience with "Tiara Syndrome,” a term coined by negotiations expert, in which one expects their achievements and hard work to be automatically recognized and rewarded rather than needing to ask for raises, promotions, and other benefits. She encountered hostile work environments, particularly at the hedge fund and throughout all of these experiences, learned the importance of self-advocacy and negotiation. Jamie developed and organized workshops to help women negotiate better within the organizations she was working for as she began her coaching studies. She also partnered with the "She Negotiates" organization to build her skills and eventually opened her own coaching practice. Over a decade, Jamie has trained professionals in effective self-advocacy and workplace negotiation at leading organizations, including Smith College, Executive Education, Citi, Unilever, Jeffries, and UC Berkeley School of Business, among others. She developed a which is available through her website. The car was a collector's dream, but it needed an engine, a paint job, a Fender, a headliner, carpeting, and new upholstery.Lisa's husband believed he could sell the car for $20,000. Lisa was livid because they needed the money owed, and the only way they could make any money from selling the car was if they made all the repairs necessary.Lisa's father-in-law died and left a small inheritance of about $17,000. They spent about $14,000 from the inheritance to repair the car. It was beautiful by the end of the repairs. Just after picking up the car, the couple was driving home when Lisa ran into the back of another vehicle and crunched the front end. Now they had to do some more repairs and spend more money. Women are still behind the eight-ball when it comes to earnings in the workplace. One reason is that women are historically not savvy about salary negotiation. Listen to this podcast and learn to win at work and earn what you are worth. In order to get paid what you deserve you have to know how to articulate your contributions to the bottom line. A few preliminary thoughts: Some people make the mistake of giving personal reasons when asking for a raise (I want to buy a house, I need to buy a car, etc.) The best chance at getting a raise will occur when you can put a dollar value on your contributions. Most businesses are primarily concerned with their bottom line, so you need to make your pitch based on those metrics. Some Key Take-aways: Do your research before meeting with your supervisor (the hiring manager) about a raise. Have some awareness what others are being paid for the work you do. Be prepared to toot your own horn and remind management of your contributions. Sometimes compensation might come in the form of a title change, additional benefits, or other non-monetary raise – or perhaps a combination of money and benefits.
