Stop Sabotaging Your Success

In this episode, Cindy Esliger discusses the cycle of unrealistic expectations and false promises that keeps us striving indefinitely. It's not just exhausting, it feeds into a culture that thrives on our self-doubt and overwork. We're left blaming ourselves instead of identifying the truth, which Cindy explains isn't us but the system that maintains control with ever-moving goalposts. How do we break free from this unending grind? Cindy tells us how to create an authentic and fulfilling career independent of other people's arbitrary standards. Cindy calls the coercive control loop of false promises ‘future faking'. It erodes our confidence and fosters burnout. Continuing to shift the goalposts is designed to keep us striving but never arriving. It's a demoralizing control tactic that is used to maintain control and keep us off-balance. When we let it get to us, we start doubting ourselves, which causes us to double down in effort. Cindy says the first step to stop playing the game is recognizing that we don't have to prove our worth, and the second step is to redefine what success means to us. There are three common patterns that prevent us from taking back our power. 1) Unrealistic expectations, 2) Invisible work, and 3) Toxic dynamics. When we can identify those patterns, we can see them for what they are and reclaim our confidence and agency. Cindy offers a roadmap for how to acknowledge future faking and stop internalizing the problem. With her guidance, we can shift the power dynamic and choose ourselves, our goals, our values, and our well-being instead of playing a rigged game.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Stop Hanging On To False PromisesAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

Quitting your job might feel like the only way out. When the office vibe is toxic, politics are exhausting, and every workday feels like a chore, it's tempting to call it quits—whether quietly or dramatically. But Darcy Eikenberg, author of Red Cape Rescue: Save Your Career Without Leaving Your Job, challenges that idea. Darcy believes you can transform your career from within. In today's episode, we explore how to rebound from burnout and discover the superpowers you already have to create positive change. Key Highlights of Our Interview: Feeling in Control – How Red Cape Revolution Inspires  “Red Cape Revolution isn't about superhero costumes; it's about bringing that sense of confidence, where your shoulders are back, and you're ready to face the world, into the workplace. With Red Cape Rescue, you can turn those career speed bumps into moments of self-rescue, without waiting on anyone else for change.” Crafting a Fear Strategy for Modern Life “We all have that primitive part of our brain—the same one that saved our ancestors from tigers. It kicks in when we see an email from our boss, triggering fear even when there's no real threat. I call it the ‘lizard brain,' but we can override it by tapping into our ‘heroic brain' to control our responses.” “Our fear responses are overused in today's world, making us pull back and hide. Instead, I encourage people to forge a fear strategy: decide ahead of time how to respond when fear hits. Ask yourself, ‘What's in my control here?' and choose a different thought to keep fear from taking the wheel.” Can't See the Label from Inside the Jar? Here's a Trick “We're all stuck in our own jars, so I recommend stepping back by recording yourself venting about a situation. Play it back, pull out the facts, and let go of the stories your brain adds. It's like listening to a friend's dilemma—it's amazing what we hear from the outside.” Self-Awareness: The Key to Unlocking Clarity “True clarity comes from self-awareness. If something bothers you, take a deeper look: What personal value feels violated? Self-reflection is vital because the same situation might impact you differently than others, all depending on how you're wired.” Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guests: Darcy Eikenberg ______________________ Chief Change Officer: Make Change Ambitiously. Today I'm excited to launch our new-for-2021 Productive Living series. As I mentioned in last week's episode, this'll be a recurring series in which I talk with women with special expertise or insight or experience in various areas that are important to us as women wanting to make a life that matters. We'll talk about topics relevant to health, relationships, money, mindset and self-care, homemaking and home management, and creativity and fun. This week we'll be looking at the other topical area: career, as I share with you my conversation with physician and life coach Errin Weisman.  As a female physician who almost gave up medicine, Errin found herself in the pit of burnout in 2014. From the outside, it seemed like she had it all–a successful career, children, a new home–but internally she was numb. And she was ready to do whatever it took to feel better. She thought she had done everything right, so why did she feel so bad? She wondered if something was wrong with her. As she began her journey to wellness, she realized she wasn't the only one feeling this way and decided she wanted to help others. 2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT LOW-COST!!! Suffering from early career burnout? This is something that many overworked SLPs are suffering from, and private practice may be the answer. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, Laura and Adrianne share how they started their private practices after overcoming burnout. They both share where they get their referrals from, what types of clients they see, and whether they are generalists or specializing in certain populations. If you've been thinking about starting a private practice and want to see how other folks are doing it, this episode is for you! Laura and Adrianne are the hosts of The SLP Book Club podcast. Each month, they carefully select amazing books that speech therapists might not have the time to read and discuss them on their podcast chapter by chapter. They create and post free resources to accompany the books, allowing SLPs to immediately use the information they've learned with their caseloads.Laura began her career in public schools, working as a contracted employee in a very large school district for six years. Outrageously high caseload numbers and unrealistic expectations led to complete burnout in her fourth year. A switch to part-time proved to be more manageable, but she ultimately decided to open her private practice in 2021 after discovering the Start Your Private Practice course. Her private practice, Springboard Speech Therapy, provides support to preschoolers who stutter and their families in the Los Angeles area. In addition to seeing clients in their homes, Laura creates digital and printable materials for other speech therapists in her TPT store, Laura G SLP.Adrianne has spent much of her career working in public schools with grades K-12. She enjoys helping children as both an in-person therapist and a teletherapist. In 2021 she opened her private speech therapy practice, Say Hello Speech Therapy, in Orange County, California. She has a special interest in articulation/speech sound disorders and is extensively trained in UCLA's PEERS program for both teens and young adults. She is especially enthusiastic about empowering parents to be the best advocates and speech coaches possible for their children. Adrianne currently balances motherhood, working full-time as a teletherapist, hosting a podcast, and seeing private practice clients. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How the Start program helped Adrianne and Laura start the private practices they dreamed ofHow specializing helps clients come to youThe job satisfaction private practice can bringHow empowering it can be to own your own private practiceThe power of parent coaching and home connection Running your private practice from home and setting your caseload sizesThe freedom you get as a private practice ownerThe truth about burnout among SLPsHow Laura and Adrianne are finding their clientsI hope you enjoyed this episode with Laura and Adrianne! Private practice is all about taking back that control. They didn't switch careers. They just switched to a new job setting- their own, where they are the boss. How do you pivot or leap out of career burnout? We all have our reasons for staying in a career or continuing to pursue a business that is not really serving our fulfillment and well being.Today's conversation with Suzanne Monroe is a deep dive into how you lead the change, whether it's in staying where you're at or pivoting to what's next, the change begins with each of us.The change is also required to not continually repeat the patterns of burnout that will inevitably follow if you haven't taken the time to identify them. This conversation is an absolute must listen, especially if you're feeling burned out in your career.Suzanne Monroe was working a high pressure job that didn't align with her personal beliefs, where the corporate culture was to sleep under your desk instead of going home to rest and recharge that led her to experience career burnout. Simultaneously, a close loved one was diagnosed with a health crisis and every doctor told them there was nothing traditional medicine could do to help. This is where her holistic health journey began. She then poured herself into researching, reading, and ultimately helping her loved one turn the corner towards healing, sparking her passion for wellness and inspiring her to leave corporate America and traditional healthcare behind her.Suzanne, the formerly burnt out corporate America employee, is now doing what she loves as the Founder of The International Association of Wellness Professionals (IAWP), Director of the IAWP's Holistic Wellness Coach Certification and Training Program, and author. She aims to help people reawaken their purpose and find a career they love, as well as live a healthy and happy lifestyle. Last year alone, she helped reach 11.5 Million people with the message of holistic wellness and living a life you love. Are you facing career burnout? For many SLPs and OTs, this is all too common. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Corinne Zmoos who experienced early career burnout. She was tired of the expectation that she should be an expert generalist at her job in early intervention and felt trapped. She is very creative and started teaching music classes on the side and since the parents of the kids she worked with knew she was an SLP, they started asking for help. After joining the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs, she now has a thriving private practice. Corinne Zmoos, M.S. CCC-SLP is a musical speech language pathologist in Baltimore, MD. Her private practice, Crescendo Communication provides highly individualized, neurodiverse language and executive functioning therapy for toddlers and young children. She specializes in AAC, musical intervention, and Gestalt language processing. As a neurodivergent individual herself, Corinne deeply understands how music lights up the brain for nontraditional learners and facilitates progress rooted in joy rather than compliance. This year, Corinne opened Messy Happy Music Lab to provide an inclusive space for the children of Baltimore to learn through music, process art, and sensory playIn Today's Episode, We Discuss:How she got started as an SLP How she took on the identity of a business ownerWhy word-of-mouth referrals are so powerfulThe services she offers to her clients Why she loves Gestalt language processing How she sees genuine, authentic growth with her clients How the Start and Grow programs helped herI hope you enjoyed this conversation with Corinne. She is a breath of fresh air in the speech world and I love that she offers such creative and unique services to the clients that she serves. She went from being a burnt-out SLP to a successful private practice owner. Whether you want to offer nontraditional services like Corinne, or if you still want to offer traditional services but outside of a traditional setting, private practice may be the solution to help you get what you need.If you would like to know more about our programs and how we help support SLPs and OTs who want our help to start and grow their practices - just like we've helped Corrine, please visit www.IndependentClinician.com. What was the highlight of my day? What did I do really well? What could I do more of? How could I be even better? What decisions did I make? How could that impact me mentally? Charlène Gisèle asks herself these questions every day and believes that if you don't start your day with a bit of self-care, then you probably won't do it. After experiencing burnout, Charlène decided to become a burnout prevention expert and help others avoid burnout. As a child, Charlène Gisèle knew that she wanted to be a lawyer. She watched her father work as a high-achieving lawyer and Charlène wanted the same career for herself. But after her father had a heart attack and stroke, Charlène reconsidered her priorities. Although Charlène experienced anxiety, insomnia, and a deteriorated marriage, it wasn't until she saw her father suffer, that Charlène truly understand burnout. Charlène explains that suffering with mental health issues is unlike any other illness because no one can see your pain. “You do not walk around with a bandage or cast on your head,” in the way you would have a cast on your leg or arm when you are injured. But Charlène is adamant that burnout must be treated as seriously as any other illness. It was with great difficulty that Charlène decided to leave her Big Law office. Charlène spent so much time studying at Cambridge University (United Kingdom) and learning the law, but it was time for Charlène to learn about work-life balance. Charlène Gisèle created a consulting company, Charlène Gisèle, where she and two associates, coach lawyers and C-suite executives to remain high-achieving professionals. Two or three minutes of breathwork or reflection after a big meeting will really help high-achieving lawyers and executives avoid burnout. In fact, creating these micro habits are better than taking a 3-week holiday. Creating consistent self-care micro habits allows you to learn habits that will serve you for the rest of your life in addition to helping you avoid burnout. Charlène is able to help high-achievers change their mindsets about self-care because she negotiates with them and explains that your well-being affects your performance. “When you must bridge the gap between how you react to things and how you feel, your micro habits will impact you,” says Charlène Gisèle. Charlène Gisèle serves clients in Asia, America, and Europe and has fluctuating schedules that allow her to get adequate rest while meeting clients in these varying time zones. Charlène credits law school with teaching her persistence and resistance, two traits that Charlène continues to use every day even though she has left Big Law. Join the Bounce Back from Burnout Masterclass with Charlène Gisele:https://joinnow.live/s/RjYWK5?_ga=2.99992984.782084531.1669768903-781012046.1669768903Can you keep practicing law without burnout and anxiety?
