Job boards give you the illusion that there are more job opportunities than actually exist. If you hop on LinkedIn or a remote job board you'll find hundreds and sometimes thousands of job listings depending on the role you're looking for. The problem is that about 50% of them are "ghost listings", meaning the role isn't real. And of the job listings that are real, each posting will get hundreds of applicants. With so many candidates applying for so few actual positions, how do you stand out from the crowd? Unfortunately, the answer is not a numbers game. Sending hundreds of applications each week will not increase your odds of getting hired. You're just adding more noise and wasting your time. In this episode Marisa explains how to dramatically increase your response rate and get to the interview stage. She explains exactly how to increase quality over quantity to maximize your chances of landing the job. And if you are looking for help understanding which direction you should go with your career so that you can work remote as a digital nomad, Marisa is hosting a career clarity workshop. Most people assume that they can get a remote job by directly applying to job listings they find on job boards. It's VERY rare that people actually get jobs this way. The majority of the time these job applications get lost in the abyss of hundreds of applications. As a matter of fact, if your application DOES get looked at, the average amount of time a recruiter will spend on it is 6 seconds. 6 seconds is all you get! You need to completely reframe the way you think about getting a job to maximize your odds of getting a job. In this episode Jeff and Marisa walk you through a technique that will optimize the likelihood of getting hired. Hint: The best way to get hired at a fully remote company is by following companies rather than chasing individual job listings. And the best way to do that is finding companies that truly give you the freedom to travel anywhere while you work. Fortunately, Beach Commute has spent 3+ years tracking down the very best companies in the world to work from. Beach Commute has launched a fully filterable database (called the Anywhere Atlas) of 300+ awesome companies, rated by four important factors: Peer reviews - how people who actually work for the company feel about working with them. Remote work culture - how much the company embraces a fully-remote work style. Employee perks - the benefits the companies offer like 4 day weeks, laptops, medical coverage, etc. Company culture - the type of positive environment management fosters for employees. In our latest episode, Rick and Kaleem dive into a multifaceted conversation with Jeff Frick, the Founder and Principal of Menlo Creek Media and host of the "Turn the Lens" and "Work 20XX" podcasts.A distinguished professional with experience at major companies like Mitsubishi and Intel, Jeff is a remote work visionary! He draws inspiration from his extensive experience with "the Cube," where he conducted thousands of interviews at tech conferences, underscoring the importance of natural conversation over scripted responses. For him, digital engagement emphasizes the crucial difference between reach and engagement. Genuine engagement, which requires time, effort, and meaningful interactions with the community, is far more valuable than broad reach that can be bought through ads.The undeniable evolution of video production and the significance of transcripts in making video content searchable and accessible are clear. In Jeff's current area of expertise, it is evident that content should be planned with a focus on evergreen topics rather than fleeting news to ensure it remains relevant and useful over time.Content creators today can align their work with social media algorithms to enhance visibility and engagement. The goal should be building a real community and leveraging the algorithm's ability to connect like-minded individuals. Jeff stresses the importance of authentic interaction in this process, as he builds his projects only this way!Regarding the evolution of remote work, its current state, and its future, Jeff focuses on the transformative period of 2020, when companies were forced to adopt remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The outdated mindset of some managers who believe physical presence is necessary to monitor employees' work is a retrograde notion. The shift towards asynchronous work and the use of digital tools are fueling the next steps of the future of work, particularly the consumerization of IT! For Jeff, the path forward is clear. Even with the recurring theme of "return to office" initiatives, the trend is moving towards more flexible, team-level agreements on work arrangements, emphasizing management based on objectives rather than tasks. Society never reverts to its past state, so new companies, unburdened by traditional office expenses, will likely outperform incumbents. Wall Street will pressure older companies to justify their expenses compared to more efficient newcomers. Younger generations, accustomed to remote work and digital tools, will drive these changes. From the specifics of media production to broader themes of digital engagement and the future of work, this conversation is insightful and useful for everyone remote! Jeff's views highlight the changing nature of media and the increasing importance of authentic engagement and meaningful discussions in a digital age. Tune in, give it a listen, and connect with our guest on all his platforms. “HR Heretics†| How CPOs, CHROs, Founders, and Boards Build High Performing Companies
In this episode, Nolan and Kelli have an honest and transparent discussion with CEO and founder of Remote Job van der Voort (also the former VP of Product at GitLab) on the nuances of running an international remote company. Job strongly emphasises how trying to replicate the office environment in a remote setting doesn't work and how giving small teams extreme autonomy with focus on outcome-based-management far outweighs surveillance and micro management. Kelli, Nolan and Job chat about early career growth and development in remote settings vs learning by osmosis in the office and how the company committed to developing new methodologies to mentor and train up juniors.Job also gives insights into the complexities of global hiring, geography-based compensation, and geographic mobility for remote workers and discusses the impact it has on contracts and mutual obligations.HR Heretics is a podcast from Turpentine.Share this with your friends, forward to your enemies. Remote job boards are a mirage, full stop. With the thousands of "remote jobs" listed daily, you might think that your opportunities for getting a remote job are limitless. But it's 100% fool's gold. Once you start applying for jobs, you'll see that just finding legitimate listings is a job unto itself. For starters, over half of job listings online are fake. Yeah, you read that right. If you've applied to remote jobs online, chances are you've submitted your personal information to someone harvesting data. And if you do manage to find a legitimate listing from a company that isn't harvesting your data, there is a high likelihood that the listing isn't fully remote, meaning you can't work as a digital nomad. In the fine print you'll see that most "remote" jobs are limited to a very specific geography, like a specific city, state or timezone. They are listed as "remote", but what they actually mean is "work from home." Only 5% of jobs are remote, and only 1% of jobs are "fully remote." It literally takes hours every day to sort through all this junk. It's a full-time job to simply find appropriate listings...then you have to do the hard work of trying to get an interview! We at Beach Commute do all of this work for you on a daily basis and send legitimate remote job listings to your inbox every day. Get a week of remote job listings sent to your inbox every day, for free. We do all of this screening work for you. https://beachcommute.com/nomadjobs
