fWotD Episode 2412: City Hall MRT station Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Tuesday, 12 December 2023 is City Hall MRT station.City Hall MRT station is an underground Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the North–South line (NSL) and East–West line (EWL). Situated in the Downtown Core district, it is underneath Stamford Road near the road junctions with North Bridge Road and St Andrew's Road. The station is near landmarks such as the former City Hall, Raffles City, the Padang, St Andrew's Cathedral and the Cenotaph.Initially named St Andrew's MRT station, the station was included in the early plans for the original MRT network in 1982. The station opened on 12 December 1987 as part of the MRT extension to Outram Park station. Cross-platform transfers between the NSL and EWL began on 28 October 1989, ahead of the opening of the MRT eastern line extension to Tanah Merah station on 4 November which split the MRT network into two lines. A designated Civil Defence shelter, the three-level station features a mural by Simon Wong which depicts government buildings in the area. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 06:31 UTC on Wednesday, 13 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see City Hall MRT station on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joanna Neural.

Badang was a powerful man from the Malay world who lived in Sungai Batu Pahat, Malaysia. He was active in the courts of the Raja Sri Wikrama of the Kingdom Of Singapura. He was also associated with various historical artefacts, such as the Singapore Stone.According to a legend, Badang was a slave who had been tasked with clearing the forest for his owner. He caught a genie in his net at the Singapore River. In exchange for his freedom, the latter agreed to let him be the strongest man in the land. Upon eating the genie's vomit, Badang became very strong and could uproot trees effortlessly.Badang was a Malay boy from Malaysia's Batu Pahat River. He was the only son of two farmers who worked hard until their deaths. When he was young, he worked as a coolie for a rich farmer named Orang Kaya Nira Sura in Sumatra, Indonesia.Despite being a slave, Badang had royal blood as he reportedly descended from a prince from the Bugis tribe who married a woman from the Malay community in Bintan. His father, on the other hand, was from the Ming Dynasty. Legend has it that his lineage came from the blood of a Chinese prince who married a woman from the same tribe. Badang eventually became the army chief of the Sultan of Johor. His descendant was Hang Mahmud, whose family had also been involved in the wars in Malacca and Johor. Hang Tuah, son of Hang Mahmud, was a legend who is regarded as a great warrior.Read more at https://mythlok.com/badang/

In this episode of the podcast Gary Bembridge of TipsForTravellers.com, visits Singapore and provides tips for travellers on the 10 must-see sights and attractions. In addition he also provides some key observations, historical highlights, best time to visit, getting there and around and general tips and advice. I like Singapore. A lot. I’ve been lucky enough to visit this city and country rolled into one multiple times, and every time I go I like it even more. While some travellers describe it as sterile compared to other large Asian cities, this has never been my experience. I find it a modern city that is incredibly efficient, smart, tidy, safe – and full of fun things to do. You just need to know the right things to see and do. This is the purpose of this tip for travellers episode! My aim is to ensure you do not waste your time in Singapore by sharing the best things to see and do. The episode covers the following must-see sights and attractions: Gardens By the Bay. Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Complex. ArtScience Museum. Merlion. Take a “Bum Boat” trip along Singapore River to Clarke Quay. Chinatown. Eat at the Cheapest Michelin Star Restaurant in the World. Kampong Glam. National Gallery. Sentosa Island. If you are looking for things to do in the evening, I recommend the following: Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari.
