Warwick's race-winning record is second to none in the fearsome Formula 5000 era! The only Australian ever to win the Tasman Series against all comers and the AGP joining Sir Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Sir Jack Brabham! He raced against Frank Matich, Niel Allen, Alan Jones, Mario Andretti, AJ Foyt and many others. His second-by-second retelling of the horrendous crash in the Lola T300 at Surfers Paradise Raceway in 1973 that almost took his life is chilling to hear. He says, '99 times out of 100, I should have died that day!He happily admits to only occasionally being a Muscle Car driver in the terms of road-car-based racing cars, but if an F5000 isn't a real Muscle Car then what is?
Oscar Piastri has joined Sir Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo to become the fifth Australian to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix. With Rusty on a well earned break, Mark Howard jumped into the archives to grab Rusty's interview with Oscar to find out more about the rising star of Aussie motorsport. They chat about acclimatising, the car, family, learning his craft and media. Plus, watching Bathurst, keeping across Supercars and hanging out with Aussie cricketers during the Ashes. British racing fans were accustomed to seeing competitive Jaguar Mk2s triumph frequently in British Saloon Car racing in the early 1960s. But on this day sixty years ago, May 11th 1963, the Ford Galaxie arrived to end the British reign at the top. When Jack Sears drove a Galaxie 500 to victory in the 1963 British Saloon Car Championship, it came as a shock to the established order. Protests and arguments ensued as American muscle destroyed the previously dominant Jags. Racing veterans Graham Hill and Sir Jack Brabham also tried their hand at driving these enormous beasts, which would struggle to slow thanks the insufficient brakes, and which were quickly upgraded before the year was out. But the point of these cars wasn't the twisty stuff, it was the enormous about of power from the 7.0 engines and seemingly endless torque. The Lotus Cortinas proved to be too quick for the big Ford V8's as the decade went on, but not before the Galaxie had cemented its place in racing history. Martyn Lee is joined by Autosport's Chief Editor Kevin Turner to look back at the impact the Galaxie's made when they arrived on these shores, and tell us more about the recent Autosport track test, when we were able to get a Jaguar Mk2, Ford Galaxie and Ford Lotus Cortina all on track at Silverstone for a special feature online and in the magazine. We're talking to Greg Crick on this week's episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast. In the first part of a three-part chat, Cricky talks about growing up just over a mile from the Longford road circuit in Tasmania, watching the F1 heroes of the day and deciding to go racing himself. He also talks about some of the wild machines he raced early in his career, from his first FJ Holden and a turbocharged XU-1 Torana, through to a speedway-inspired Mazda RX-7 sports sedan and his iconic Australian title-winning Honda Prelude. He also shares some hilarious stories (including the time he was ‘arrested' by Victoria Police's Armed Robbery Squad during Sandown 500 practice!) and his first time racing in the Bathurst 1000. He also explains his decision to turn his attention to touring car racing, plus becoming teammates with Sir Jack Brabham in winning the inaugural Targa Tasmania. A few years before his death, I spoke to Sir Jack Brabham. The obvious start was to get him reminiscing about the old days. To my surprise he almost immediately said “you should speak to Ron Tauranac”. Ron had a long friendship with Brabham and Ron helped him no matter which team he was in and then held the official position of the design expert behind the cars that carried the Brabham name. Sir Jack's reference wasn't just a passing comment; a polite thank you, thrown into a speech about himself in the style you often see at the Oscars. It wasn't even a formal recommendation to broaden the research. Sir Jack's eyes lit up with enthusiasm, it seemed clear to me that Brabham felt that any discussion of his career needed to consider his mate and his mate deserved a large amount of credit. Ron Tauranac passed away recently at the age of 95. Someone who is close to motor racing and to the characters behind the events is celebrated motoring journalist Will Hagon. In this interview with Will he covers • How Ron was a partner, an integral part, of Brabham's success • The beginning of Ron's fascination with cars • How he and Jack went in the 1953 Redex trial • How Ron became the biggest builder of racing cars in the world • The role Ron played in the career of Larry Perkins • How Ron helped jack even before he was on his team • Talking with Ron in his later years, attending his 90th birthday and taking a picture of Ron beside a painting of a famous Brabham racing car. Ron Tauranac and Sir Jack Brabham had a friendship, a collaboration, a mateship that stood the test of time including the extremely difficult, complex and political environment of Formula 1 motor racing. Ron was one of the special Australia's who pioneered creative and successful technology but sadly remains less well known that Jack Brabham and many others know that he deserves.
In 2009, we spoke with Ron Tauranac about his amazing life in Motorsport, from building and racing his first car, to working with Sir Jack Brabham, moving to England and life in Formula 1. Then moving to building the Ralt empire which won almost every open wheel championship a car was entered. He talks about the people and deals that were instrumental in his life. Our condolences go out to family and friends.

BRDC Memorial 24th October 2014
Last Chance For Fans To Join Sir Jack Brabham BRDC Memorial Motor racing fans still have the unique chance to join the Sir Jack Brabham Memorial event, hosted by the BRDC and organised by son David Brabham, at the Silverstone Wing from 2pm on Friday 24 October. Those wishing to attend must register for a ticket by this Friday, 17 October by contacting Deborah Jennings at deborah.jennings@brdc.co.uk or call 01327 850 925. The event is shaping up to be a fitting celebration of the triple Formula 1 World Champion’s remarkable life and outstanding contribution to motorsport, held in support of Kidney Research UK, with valued backing from Honda, Arbuthnot Latham and G.H. Mumm Champagne. Renowned F1 designer Gordon Murray, whose pioneering Brabham cars won 22 Grands Prix and two Drivers’ titles with Nelson Piquet in 1981 and 1983, will be joining Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Frank Williams, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Tony Brooks and Nick Goozée on stage to share their memories of the legendary driver and engineer. Those attending the event will have the opportunity to donate to Kidney Research UK in Sir Jack’s memory, while anyone can make a contribution to the charity via the official Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/SirJackBrabham Paul Oz, official licensed artist to James Hunt, Bruce Lee, Star Trek, Denis the Menace, Ali, Mr Men and Little Miss, and Thunderbirds, who has also created commissioned work for the Instituto Ayrton Senna and Jenson Button among many others, has also pledged his support to the event. His stunning portrait of Sir Jack will be on display and Paul will be selling official prints of the masterpiece to help raise funds for Kidney Research UK. Paul commented: “The Sir Jack Brabham portrait was created for my Singapore gallery show over the Formula 1 race week, I thought with poignant timing. With the high Australian contingent out there for the F1, it turned out more fitting than I’d ever have thought. It’s a privilege to be able to celebrate the life of a motorsport legend with what I do – but an absolute honour to be invited by David to be part of the memorial.” The Sir Jack Brabham Memorial has been made possible thanks to support from Honda, who powered Sir Jack to 12 out of 15 Formula 2 race wins while sealing the F1 and F2 titles in the same iconic year of 1966; Brabham’s private bankers Arbuthnot Latham; and Formula One Management, through its partnership with G.H. Mumm Champagne. David Brabham commented: “We are getting closer to what will be a fantastic event at Silverstone celebrating my father’s amazing career. Jack was instrumental to so many drivers, engineers and fans in the UK that this special event gives people the opportunity to come and pay their respects to a remarkable man at a racetrack he loved and did so well at. I would like to thank the BRDC and Silverstone for helping to organise and host the event, plus I do look forward to listening to the stories his compatriots will share with us.”
Lord March has paid tribute to three-time Formula 1 world champion Sir Jack Brabham. Sir Brabham, whose 1966 world title made him the only driver to be crowned champion in a car bearing his own name, was a said to be a ‘great friend’ to Goodwood, having first forged links with the Motor Circuit following his decision to move from Australia to England to further his racing career. His first event at Goodwood Motor Circuit was in 1955 and he continued to race single-seater and sports car machinery right up to the point at which competition ceased in 1966, finishing third – behind Jim Clark and Graham Hill – in the last Formula 1 race held there in ’65. Goodwood was central to Sir Jack’s return to racing in 1998. He attended the Revival six times and raced several times during the early years, his highlight being fifth place – and second among the rear-engined F1 cars – in the Richmond and Gordon Trophy race of 1999 in a Cooper T53-Climax, at the age of 73. In 2004 he was the subject of the Revival’s driver tribute while four years later he made his final appearance at the event as part of a ‘Goodwood Greats’ parade. He also drove at eight Festivals of Speed, entertaining huge crowds with display runs in everything from a Brabham BT12 Indy car to an AC Cobra Le Mans Coupe.
