This week on Miami Vice: A wedding is quickly followed by a funeral as a kingpin Luis Pedroza is gunned down on his wedding day, leaving his arranged bride and now widow to live with his son (Miguel Ferrer RIP), sister-in-law and son-in-law. Clearly, things will be super happy and cordial! The 80s did love a new mysterious woman moving into a huge mansion occupied with feuding family members. Things gets spicier when Tubbs catches feelings. Meanwhile, Crockett goes up to visit Billy, who is acting out due to the impending visit from the Stork. Crockett tries to make up for lost time, but it doesn't seem to be enough as Billy feels unwanted by both sides. This week on Miami Vice: Gina is undercover with a big-time dealer, Enriquez, who is a big fan of white stuff whether it be cocaine or fabulous accessories. Vice is after him and their bust (at a metro station party...?) was by the book until Enriquez's lawyer gets him off thanks to Switek's typo in the warrant. The lawyer, Sam Boyle and his protegé, Lisa Madsen (Amanda Pummer) are working for Enriquez as Vice tries to get closer, and it takes a dead child to make Lisa questions her loyalty. Her world comes crashing down as Vice closes in on Enriquez and Boyle - whose world is also closing in around him as he's caught stealing from Frank Romano (Tony Sirico), while Enriquez keeps servings looks. Your host was a bit over-caffeinated so feel free to skip ahead at parts or listen along and check the show notes for any links - including other shady lawyers stealing from clients like Tom Girardi! Could Sam have been a husband on The Real Housewives of Miami if it was around in the 80s??? This week on Miami Vice: Switek's bets and debts catch up to him and he's not alone. A star Hurricanes quarterback named Kevin with an overbearing stage dad (an old friend of Stan's) and shady manager, is also facing gambling debts. Both of them will get caught up as Vice busts the gambling ring run by and then subsequent hit on Chi Chi Vasquez, and both of their debts rack up getting them and those around them into hot water. Switek is not alone as Crockett and Tubbs are there to try and help him through his issues that aren't really about his girlfriend, as he claims. This week on Miami Vice: Trudy goes under as a prostitute to catch a serial killer who is carving his mark into his victims. Could it be the eclectic artist with a penchant for violence and knives (Cory Tagawa is back)? Continuity be damned this episode as Castillo can't decipher whether these markings as Japanese or Thai (despite previously living there, speaking Thai in previous episodes and being married to a Thai woman...?) so Vice enlists the help of a professor of Asian studies to help them catch the killer. Trudy gets closer and closer and ultimately way too close for comfort in the search for the killer. This week on Miami Vice: Vice is put in charge of a key witness in a trial against a drug kingpin named Quintero. The FBI thinks the witness will be safer with Vice, and Vice has their hands full when he tries to sneak out to hit the clubs. Crockett and Keith, the witness, butt heads but, the generation gap narrows as they get to know each other better. This episode might be dated in my 2024 (RIP Expos) but, some things, like bumping heads with your elders, never change. The Home Invaders: Confessions of a Cat Burglar by Frank Hohimer (1975), a key text for the cinema of Michael Mann which has inspired many works including the forthcoming Heat 2, is available to read on Internet Archive. 1986 TV spot for Manhunter, 1986 Commercial for the network premiere of Manhunter on NBC, 1989 Trailer for Red Dragon (Brett Rather, 2002)
This week on Miami Vice: Vice minus Crockett (with a very clearly ADR'd-in excuse of testifying elsewhere) is trying to get in with Borrasca, who is part of a splinter cell group that uses drug money to fight communism in the made up country of Puerto Rubio. As Tubbs and Switek get closer, a very shadowy and overly-tanned figure warns them to back off and he goes way back with Castillo. Reese, may or may not be sanctioned by the government and Castillo is doing his best to see what side of the law he is while Vice tries to get closer to Borrasca through his connections: a retired detective (OOF RIP), a gorgeous nightclub owner and associated goons. Over 30% of episodes are exclusively available to patrons of the show. https://www.patreon.com/posts/180-miami-vice-113085968 We celebrate the 40th anniversary of the premiere of NBC's crime drama Miami Vice with a new episode of Junk Filter's continuing series on the show. James Majure returns from Athens, Georgia to discuss the bizarre duelling vanity musical projects of stars Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas that appeared as the success of the show culturally peaked. Philip Michael Thomas struck first with a strange solo album for Atlantic Records in 1985, Living the Book of My Life, that came with a famously terrible music video for the single “Just The Way I Planned It”; for some reason PMT promoted this project by reissuing a forgotten anti-drug exploitation film he made in 1978 (co-starring The Gap Band), retitled Death Drug, where he plays a rising musical talent who tries PCP and immediately goes insane, which features ludicrous new sequences shot on a camcorder that make the project even more incoherent. Don Johnson on the other hand had a solo rock album for CBS Records the following year, Heartbeat, with full label support and an all-star cast of collaborators. It spawned a Top 5 hit with the title track and came with an expensive album-length music video project for HBO that feels like a lost Sonny Crockett episode of Miami Vice. We also discuss one of the most bizarre episodes of Vice that has this eighties psychedelic vanity production energy, Season 4's “Missing Hours”, featuring alien abductions, UFOs and (inexplicably) Chris Rock and James Brown. “Miami Vice at 40: You Can't Go Home Again” by Chaim Roth, for Miami New Times, September 24, 2024 Music video for Heartbeat (Don Johnson, 1986) Music video for Just The Way I Planned It (Philip Michael Thomas, 1985)
This week on Miami Vice: Sonny Burnett is back as we open Season Five. He's working for a new bigwig, Oscar Carrera, and is helping him with logistical issues until his son, Miguel and his wife, Celeste make things way more complicated. Tubbs goes under as Cooper to try and see if he can jog his memory as Carrera fights with his son and his rival, El Gato - the brother of the recently departed Manolo from Mirror Image. He survives (not to Vice's knowledge) but, has amnesia and now believes that he is his alter ego, Sonny Burnett. As he gets deeper into this new world, Tubbs is digging deeper into Manolo and Gutierrez (Antonio Fargas!) to figure out what really happened on that boat with help from the Ft. Lauderdale precinct. This week on Miami Vice: Evil is the theme of this week as Vice hears about home invasions gone wrong when a 15-year old girl is killed, and the style matches that of Frank Hackman... remember him? From "Forgive Us Our Debts"? He shot and killed Crockett's former partner, was on death row until Crockett helped get him out, believing he was innocent. Nope! Drama ensues when his estranged wife, her hot lawyer (Alfred Molina) and these cyrogenic bioloigists (Dr. Frobel and Dr. Poe) all hash it out over who gets to keep the body and what they want to do with it. Cash it in (wife) or bring back to life (cyrogenic biologists and ...Izzy?) It's a weird and wild episode, and lots of it has aged poorly. This has been said to have been where Miami Vice jumped the shark, do we agree? This week on Miami Vice: Vice gets involved in the adult film industry when a well-known artiste premiering his new snuff film, Death and the Lady, is accused of murder, not film magic. As they dig deeper, they wander through peep shows and art schools to get an answer... the beautiful blonde in the film turns up - twice! (Kelly Lynch) but, where is her lookalike? Crockett can tell by the eyes on screen, they're dead eyes, but the artiste, Glantz (CSI's Paul Guilfoyle) is too busy cosplaying as Willem DaFoe in To Live and Die in LA to have left any tracks. The DA (Miguel Ferrer RIP!) doesn't think a jury will convict with mostly circumstantial evidence, and Crockett refuses to ignore his intuition in this highly stylized episode. Happy news? A feline friends joins the Vice team. CONTENT WARNING: ADULT THEMES AND SITUATIONS! NOT FOR KIDS! This week on Miami Vice: A big-time televangelist's wife gets busted by Vice which sets off a chain reaction of events: framing Tubbs, a rogue rival televangelist, an Act of God-caused explosion (how fitting!) and lots of crocodile tears and fundraising. This very ripped-from-the-headlines nod to Jim Bakker is rife with zealous acting and wild outfit choices. And the power of satellite in the 1980s vs cable. Guest star: Brian Dennehy, Ben Stiller Spicy language warning! Not an episode for the kiddos. Programming note: Thanksgiving week episode is not confirmed, so may be off next week! This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are tasked with protecting witnesses testifying in a RICO trial against a bigtime New Jersey mafioso named Frank Mosca (Stanley Tucci who came to play!). Despite all the precautions and obtaining an anonymous jury, witnesses still get whacked and they can't directly pin Mosca, and things get hairier when he goes after Crockett's informant. Crockett refuses to name his informant in a cross-examination in court and gets thrown in jail (again!) for not being a snitch, while his snitch ends up in jail on a shady drug charge... uh oh! We get to see Saundra Santiago sing her heart out with a lot of blue light as she learns more about her family's past through this fiancé, Klaus... who is wanted by the cops... and also a top East German Intelligence Officer. This week on Miami Vice: Tubbs is trying to make a deal with a bigwig crack dealer named Gallego when Gallego gets ripped off for cash and a suitcase that he almost gave up his life to protect... questions? What's in the suitcase? And why were the robbers wearing prosthetics and stage makeup? This leads back to a once reformed ex-con who runs a theatre for ex-cons called Mi Vida Loca (no relation to the movie) as a way to give them a safe form of expression. Crockett knows the talent Mikey has and can't understand why he gave up so much and burned so many bridges along the way, and now he's at risk of throwing his whole life away, and of those that love him, for Gallego's suitcase. This week on Miami Vice: Crockett is indirectly responsible for the death of a biker gang member to prevent his cover from being blown, which set off a chain of events as one gang member, Reb (Reb Brown), is freshly out on parole and dedicated to avenging his fallen friend, which means killing as many as it takes. Reb tries doing right by his friend's sister, Victoria, who wants nothing to do with her brother's other life and believes he's doing the right thing on his way to Valhalla as Vice tries to stop him, as Tubbs becomes collateral damage. This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs get raided by the DEA while making a deal with Esteban Montaya (Ian McShane) and after they take the goods... they realize something's off. As they try to uncover unsavoury DEA involvement, Internal Affairs eye Crockett and Tubbs. They try to use old contacts to get more info, one of which is a DEA agent, a woman who is at the end of her rope with quite possibly the worst luck you can imagine. This week on Miami Vice: Guest stars galore! Don Johnson directs his ex-wife - and at this time, future ex-wife again and mother of his child in this episode, as Melanie Griffith plays a secretive businesswoman who has a role to play in the death of a dirty businessman and a beautiful escort (Vanity) and who has a long-standing relationship with an even bigger businessman, played by George Takei. Crockett once again falls for someone out of his world, but this time, it's a lot more surprising when connections are made (and exposed in a live television interview). Was Christine von Marburg the original SHE-E-O/Girlboss? Or the inspiration for Heidi Fleiss? Maybe both? This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs assist rookie cops (Guest Stars: Lou Diamond Phillips and Viggo Mortensen) to execute a search warrant, which turns out to be a trap and it's becoming a pattern in South Florida. Tubbs is irate that no one seems to take the leak of private information and its deadly consequences seriously, and partners up with a Special Investigations Agent, with a girlfriend working the Dept of Justice (Annette Bening in her second role ever!) who has a plan for him to get his retirement money way quicker, after he gets arrested trying to get his money from the Credit Union. The surviving rookie cop, Bobby, is following Tubbs closely after the botched search warrant that killed his partner as Tubbs seems to alienate the rest of the Vice team that tries to help, like Switek and Crockett. This week on Miami Vice: This week on Miami Vice: Crockett brings in a former cop and surveillance whiz named Duddy to assist in an investigation of a mysterious and rightfully paranoid dealer, as they try and figure out what exactly he's dealing. We discuss selected Vice episodes from Seasons 3 and 4; when Michael Mann departed from the production to work on Manhunter and Crime Story, Wolf took over as show runner and started to change the way Vice looked and felt, eschewing the pastel color scheme for harder neon lighting and a flatter visual look. The plots were now based on current events and tabloid fare, a new “ripped from the headlines” approach Wolf would soon bring to his next show Law & Order. Crockett wore a long mullet and Tubbs grew a beard. These changes, plus the newer earlier timeslot on Friday nights (up against Dallas) led to the slow decline of the popularity of the series. Matthew and I discuss three representative episodes of this period in the series, with Crockett and Tubbs up against a sleazy lawyer who is trafficking in stolen Colombian babies, crooked televangelists, and a scary porn director / artiste who may have made a snuff film, in a disturbing case that sets off the unravelling of Sonny Crockett throughout the rest of season 4. Currently most Miami Vice episodes are available for streaming in the US on Tubi. On the fifth episode of this podcast's summer sidebar series on NBC's crime drama Miami Vice, the writer and podcaster Jeb Lund joins me from Tampa, Florida for a look at the two-season story arc that pitted Bob Balaban against G. Gordon Liddy. Balaban's Ira Stone, an Army reporter who served with Sonny Crockett in Vietnam, shows up in Miami 10 years later tracking down his sworn enemy, the mysterious drug trafficker turned private militia financier “Captain Real Estate”, played by the Watergate burglar and convicted felon in his acting debut. Jeb wanted us to add a Season 4 episode to our agenda, The Rising Sun of Death, a sleazy one where Vice goes up against the Yakuza with the help of a Japanese PI who is after the murderous head of the Sumiroshi-gumi clan. This episode also features R. Lee Ermey as a dirty cop and a strip club that plays The Smiths. These three episodes offer sharp critiques from the left of the treatment of Vietnam Veterans and US military involvement in drug trafficking in Southeast Asia, America's intervention in Central America and willingness to work with fascists in the global fight against communism, and the political interference that renders law enforcement pointless. Episodes discussed on this show: Back in the World - Season 2, Ep 11 Stone's War - Season 3, Ep 2 The Rising Sun of Death - Season 4, Ep 9 Become a patron of the podcast to access to exclusive episodes every month, including this summer's entire Miami Vice sidebar series. This week on Miami Vice: Tubbs wins an all-expense paid trip that turns into a nightmare once he realize the island was practically bought and funded with the late Esteban Calderone's drug money, which died along with him, and Orlando Calderone (John Leguizamo) is on his way to seek revenge on Tubbs yet again. Vincent D'Onofrio guest stars as a criminal who Tubbs helped lock up on a Murder One charge that magically got out, wonder who's side he's on? Michael Mann casting strikes hot with the gorgeous Alicia who was out favourite seductive wife in Season One's "The Great McCarthy", who stars as Alicia and who works together with one of Tubbs' exes from New York (not Valerie). This week on Miami Vice: Crockett's one-scene girlfriend from last week Theresa (Helena Bonham Carter) is hiding a drug habit from him that ends up with a decision to pass information along that destroys the evidence against a drug kingpin Wyatt (Brad Dourit, the voice of Chucky) and kills multiple people in the process. Crockett does all he can to help her, but she is facing the prospect of losing her medical license as a result of the arrest and treatment. Crockett has to do what's best for her while also clearing his name and reputation with Internal Affairs. Other topics include: it's time to be European and I'm taking August off (see video link below for inspiration lol), why Helena Bonham Carter sounds too posh to make this believable, but not too posh to wreck multiple homes in her real life, how doing what's best for someone else hurts you and more! Crockett and Tubbs try and question fellow Vietnam veterans to get more info on who this serial killer could be and battle with the ethics at play while Castillo and Trahn dig deeper into a possible "company" connection. Crockett is dating the palest (naturally British) woman in Miami, be careful of who you trust, did Miami Vice start the leather duster to serial killer or vampire slayer trend? and more! This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs get caught up in a paramilitary plot to assassinate a Cuban dignitary when a drug deal goes bust and the dealer and a fellow cop get shot. The feds get involved when Vice starts digging into Victor Vasquez, who did work for them after he defected from Cuba and throw a wrench in their plans. Things get hairier when a meet between Vasquez and Zamora with Tubbs posing undercover as Cooper escalate from just a rip-off to an off...period and Crockett is taken hostage in the thick, jungle-like forest. The paramilitary group known as the La Segunda Brigada are planning to assassinate the Cuban Deputy Commissioner of Prisons who is in town in Miami, who is definitely not keeping a low profile by riding a limo with a Cuban flag (and in a goof an American flag). ¡No me he equivocado!
