Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs knows that the power of women's activism can change the course of history. In Three Women she explored how Berdis Baldwin, Alberta King, and Louise Little's motherly love prepared their sons to become renowned activists. This week, we're chatting about her new book, Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us. In it, Dr. Tubbs explores how our Founding Fathers enshrined patriarchy into law, with the intention of building a nation for men. During our conversation, we discussed how American patriarchy extends into every part of our lives, including our beauty choices. Dr. Tubbs was raised as a confident globetrotter. Her time spent traveling the world informed how she viewed herself and how beauty standards varied across cultures. She shared that despite positive affirmations from her family about her intelligence and beauty, self-confidence wasn't always modeled. She regained a strong sense of confidence in college and began to consider why patriarchal beauty standards rely on us hating ourselves. She would come to explore how American culture shapes meaning about women and the limited choices that women have been offered historically in Erased. Her curiosity and knowledge led us seamlessly through conversations about how she models confidence for her children, why technology reproduces existing beauty standards, and why weight loss trends tell us very little about health. They get news that their budgets are being cut by Captain Highsmith, who is making a run for County Supervisor, and naturally are pissed off. They try to get close to an NY dealer, Reginald Hawkins, but one of his goons, gets in the way, and then Crockett and Tubbs are whisked away by a group of suits. The suits are part of a shadowy network of vigilante cops who are tired of seeing criminals through the cracks and who have seen the shortcomings first hand. As the group tries to close in on the new source that Vice is after - Escalante - we see the lines get more and more blurred. One guiding principle for resisting the patriarchy in the United States is to demand equal rights for men and women. Yet, author and multidisciplinary expert Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs argues that fighting patriarchal culture is more complicated than that. Tubbs believes that this fabricated hierarchy became so deeply ingrained over time that it now goes unnoticed. She outlines the history of patriarchy in the United States along with everything it intentionally conceals. Pulling from her latest book, Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us, Tubbs highlights how the United States has its own unique gendered hierarchy. From the founding fathers to the current Supreme Court justices, from enslaved women to maternal health crises, from the exclusion of women in the Constitution to the continued lack of an Equal Rights Amendment, Tubbs brings together academic research, the stories of freedom fighters, and her own experiences to reveal what is erased. She goes further, showing a patriarchal system that has survived by hiding the tools that are necessary to dismantle it. Resisting a patriarchal system, Tubbs believes, is more complicated than once thought. She argues that humanity in the United States is determined by gender in a limited and flawed binary that is also always tied to whiteness. The first step to dismantling patriarchy is to understand how deeply ingrained it is. The next step, Tubbs says, is telling a different story that highlights everything the patriarchy shrouds, and bringing it back into the narrative. Anna Malaika Tubbs is a New York Times bestselling author and multidisciplinary expert on current and historical understandings of race, gender, and equity. With a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge in addition to a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology from Stanford University, Anna translates her academic knowledge into stories that are clear and engaging. This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are introduced to the world of underground art dealing when a big deal goes bust and they "hot" goods Vice finds turns out to be paintings. The main piece of the group is missing and Det. Whitehead from the NYPD (Michael Chiklis) is in Miami to help locate the art by prepping Crockett and Tubbs on how to penetrate the art world and we get some retconning of Tubbs from Season One, but also some great outfits so it all works out. The Scianti family - known for other types of deals - are involved and run a gallery where Tubbs goes under as a art history professor/connoisseur/dealer with the family to get closer. Joey and Julia, the children, are carrying on the family business by making deals for Joey and running the gallery for Julia and they also butt heads over what the future holds for the main piece of art their dad stole years ago and the drama it will bring as Whitehead, Vice and the Sciantis fight over it.
