Laura discusses 39-year-old French TV and film producer Sophie Toscan Du Plantier's brutal murder with actor, director, producer, author and true crime aficionada Alison Sweeney. On the morning of December 23 1996, Sophie's body was found by her neighbour, Shirley Foster, at the bottom of the driveway to her holiday home in Schull, West Cork, Ireland. Laura starts this new series answering Alison's questions about the case. We discuss the victimology, how Sophie was framed in the media and by others, the sequence of events the night that Sophie was murdered and so much more. Many of the questions that Laura answers are the same ones that you have too if you have listened to the podcast ‘West Cork', watched the three-part Netflix show ‘Sophie: A Murder in West Cork' and/or the five-part Sky docuseries, ‘Murder at the Cottage: A Search for Justice for Sophie' directed by Jim Sheridan. This is a deeply troubling case that remains unsolved to this day. There's some crossover in content this week as we both discuss the unexpected delight that is Hunter Hunter, coupled with the sheer banalness of Netflix's bizarre new dating show Sexy Beasts. Dan also fills his contractual obligation by watching another True Crime documentary, this time it's Sophie: A Murder in West Cork. Meanwhile, James narrowly avoids admitting that he watches Love Island by reviewing the shambolic reality show that airs straight after it, Apocalypse Wow. He also rips into Masters of the Universe: Revelation and "By the power of Grayskull" he is not happy! In a plot twist to rival anything we've seen in the Marvel Universe, Scarlett Johannsson has taken a firm bite out of the hand that has fed her over the last decade as it emerges she is suing Studio juggernaut, Disney. We share the details and our unqualified opinions.  It's a podcast milestone! Yes, after over a year, this week's main review marks the first time we have been to the cinema together (since the inception of this podcast). What a momentous occasion! So it's Fourth of July weekend and you came back wet from your local fireworks display or you had to move your barbecue indoors because it was too rainy or too hot and now your kids are sadly trying to toast marshmallows over the kitchen stove. Don't worry - we've got a whole bunch of entertainment alternatives to help you salvage what's left of the holiday. First Bill McCuddy has "No Sudden Move" from director Steven Soderbergh. It's a caper film starring Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro and it takes place in 1950's Detroit. Then Neil has yet another series about an aspiring stand up comic (where does he find them all?) called "Hacks" starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. The fearless Bill Bregoli tells us about the animated sequel "Boss Baby: Family Business" which has the voices of Alec Baldwin and Jeff Goldblum as well as "F9." No, it's not about your favorite key on your computer - it's yet another "Fast and Furious" movie. And this one goes into outer space! Oh, but there's so much more including "Till Death" which stars Megan Fox as a woman is left handcuffed to her dead husband as part of a sick revenge plot. Plus there's the true crime documentary "Sophie: A Murder in West Cork." So light that sparkler and give us a listen!
