Artists create, podcast, and destroy. Welcome back to the podcast where today we're going to be talking about Immortality. Immortality is a game from Sam Barlow, creator of Her Story and Telling Lies and it follows in the same tradition as those games. Largely player-directed, the game involves watching clips of three films and footage associated with them in order to gain an understanding of what happened to the people involved. There is a set point at which the game shows you its credits, but whether you feel done at that point is largely up to you. Differing from the previous games, rather than inputting text to find clips, you click on elements in scenes to cut between them, following actors or props or other elements to see new things, and you can control the speed of playback and even play in reverse. Your understanding of these mechanics and how the internal logic of the match cuts works really determine what kind of agency you can exercise in solving the mysteries, so your milage may vary depending on how much you liked the core loop of Her Story in comparison to this one. Even so, the technical prowess on display here is still incredible, with a surprising dedication to capturing the feel of the eras of film each of the game's three movies represent and performances that don't feel like an imitation so much as part of film canon themselves. We're going to be talking about the feeling of playing Immortality as compared to other games, the surprising directions the narrative takes and how it differed from our own interpretations, and in a spiritual successor to Haunting Those ROMs, we discuss what may be haunting THIS footage. Thank you for joining us again this week! Immortality has been on the list for a while because we have a particular soft spot for Her Story and how different that game felt to anything else, and while this is more refinement than innovation, it's still a really impressive title and would probably give you a similar feeling to us if it is the first of Sam Barlow's games you've played. Did you pick up on the game's secrets? Did you struggle to rewind because you were playing with a mouse? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're going to be talking about Monster Hunter Wilds, so I hope you join us then and that you have some free time in the coming weeks.

My guest today is Nainita Desai, the British composer for film, television and video games. Born and raised in London by her Indian parents, she earned a degree in mathematics, then studied sound design at the National Film and Television School. She started her career as a sound designer on the films Little Buddha, Lessons of Darkness and Death Machine, before branching into composition for television, including, among hundreds of others, the Oscar-nominated For Sama, the hit Netflix series American Murder and the BBC drama series Unprecedented. In 2022 she won the Emmy for ‘Outstanding Music Composition' for her work on The Reason I Jump, a film that explores the experiences of non-speaking autistic people around the world. More recently she has entered the world of video games, composing the scores for Telling Lies, Immortality, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and, most recently, Tales of Kenzera: Zau for which she has been nominated for a World Soundtrack Award.  Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. You are listening to our weekday Summer Podcast series where we are using this summer as a RESET — an opportunity for us to return to what matters most! This week, we are exploring being "active in service." Today's reading centers around Romans 12:3-5. We all struggle with making excuses at times, don't we? Excuses for avoiding things that are good for us, like exercising. Or excuses for overlooking important responsibilities like calling a loved one on their birthday. Nowhere do the excuses seem to come more easily than when it comes to serving at church. The truth is, each of us has been gifted by God with unique abilities and strengths we can contribute, as Romans 12 reminds us. We may sometimes struggle to see the gifts in ourselves, but they are there. And those gifts matter- they are an essential part of the body of Christ. Without them, there are real gaps and needs that go unmet. For more information, check out portcity.church/summer!

Devastating polling, the return of Nigel Farage and more talk of defections - it was almost looking like a truly nightmarish week for Rishi Sunak, but then came the TV leaders debate with Keir Starmer and the Conservative's claim that a Labour government will raise taxes by £2,000 per household. Keir Starmer failed to effectively deny the Conservative attack line until the second half of the debate and called it a lie.  Today, Labour are again saying it is a lie and the Treasury have distanced themselves from it - but, perhaps, as the old saying goes, a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has got its shoes on.    Two weeks into the election campaign, are we entering a new dirtier phase to this campaign?  Joining me in the Fourcast studio, Labour's shadow attorney general Emily Thornberry, the Conservative's Home Office Minister Chris Philp, and pollster Luke Tryl from More in Common.    Produced by Shaheen Sattar, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson, Nick Jackson and Silvia Maresca

First of all, it hurts my heart to know that someone has been spreading lies about you. I have been the subject of many lies myself, especially when I was in middle school and high school. One of those lies was so bad that if others had believed it, it could have gotten me in some really big trouble. But even with those lies that were spread about me, it seems like rumors and lies have become common today, especially among teens. You may have heard of this, I'm on TikTok, but I read an article about this a couple days ago and I wish I could say it surprised me, but it really doesn't. But there is a new trend on TikTok where TikTokers are “exposing gossipers” by when they overheard others gossiping about someone, they air everything on video, sometimes getting down to the very detail of what these gossipers look like so people know who they are and who it is they are talking about.” So, essentially, they are gossiping about gossipers, making fun of the gossipers, but also hurting a whole lot of people in the process. It's crazy, but it's become such common place that we don't even think about it when people talk to us about others…or we talk to others about someone else. A quick tip about your friends, if they are talking to you behind someone's back, they are most likely talking about you behind your back. Okay, so back to the question, “What do I do when someone is spreading lies about me at school?”  When someone tells a lie about us, we instantly want to defend ourselves by telling everyone that it's not true or even by going to the person spreading the lies and confront them. However, the problem is, when we do this, one, it makes us look guilty and two it causes more challenges. It basically adds fuel to the fire. They want a reaction out of you, and you just gave it to them.  People want to make others feel bad to make themselves feel better, the problem with that is that they actually feel better. You might be thinking, “Yeah, but they are the most popular people in school.” It doesn't matter. Actually, many times, the most popular people in school are some of the most insecure people. They gain their identity and social status from the people around them, and if they mess up, they lose it all. When they are at home by themselves at the end of the day, they usually hate who they are.To learn what to do when people spread lies about you, check out this week's episode of the UncommonTEEN Podcast!UncommonTEEN Live Tickets go on Sale December 1st! Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the relationship between gaming and the movies, with help from a crack squad of video game experts. Mark is joined by pop culture critic Kayleigh Donaldson, who helps guide him through the messy and complicated history of game adaptations on the big screen, from Super Mario Bros to Doom. He also speaks to Duncan Jones, director of the first video game film to cross $400m at the international box office - 2016's Warcraft. They discuss the challenges of adapting the cult role-playing game for a cinema audience. And Ellen asks the big question of whether video games can be considered an art form on the same level as film. To help her on her quest, she first speaks to critic Kambole Campell about why games get called 'cinematic' and whether the gaming world has auteurs. Ellen then talks to cinephile and game director Sam Barlow, about his highly successful - and highly innovative - video games Her Story, Telling Lies and Immortality. Sam explains how experimental directors like Nicolas Roeg and Peter Greenaway have influenced his work, which employs live footage of actors, rather than motion capture or graphics. Micah brings a heavy and personal topic to the show this week: Her upbringing as a Jehovah's Witness. How did faith affect her life, and why did she ultimately decide to walk away? Chris' topic, meanwhile, is a bit more ethereal, as he wants to explore the variables in our lives that ended up having a major effect down the road. How did we become the way we are, anyway? Dagan, meanwhile, wants to get into lying: The lies we've told and been victimized by, the role of lying in polite society, and all of the ramifications therein. Finally, Colin wants to know everyone's contemporary gut reactions to Apple Inc., the famous American company with a perpetually dominant position in our culture. Why do so many people love Apple? My guest today is a game director who has pioneered new forms of nonlinear storytelling that blend film and games. After twelve-year stint at the British development studio Climax, where he directed Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, he began work on an independent project, Her Story. In the game, partly inspired by Sharon Stone's audition tapes for the film Basic Instinct, you sift through a trove of police interview footage to uncover a mystery. Her Story's style of disconnected, live action sleuthing has become characteristic of his work, which includes the games Telling Lies and, most recently, the Netflix-published Immortality, described by Prospect Magazine as a“culture-spanning, psycho-visual experiment.” “All my games have been about identity,” he says. “It's scary that the people we've known for decades are unknowable to us.” Welcome, Sam Barlow.[All voiceover performances courtesy of Ed Hawkins: http://edwardhawkinsbass.com] Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. Ocean Vuong is one of the most beloved and acclaimed contemporary writers – his 2016 award-winning first poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, was published before he finished his MFA. But his sudden success has come with some pitfalls, and has illuminated some practical skills he hasn't learned. “In some ways, I feel kind of like a child actor,” he said to Anna. Ocean's partner and his younger half brother drive him places and accompany him on trips. “I tell my family, if it wasn't for you guys, if it was just me, I would be in a studio with just a single mattress surrounded by books stacked from the floor up,” he said. But sharing the benefits of his professional accomplishments is a big part of how Ocean lives with his family and shows up for his friends. He talks about falling in love with poetry – and his partner – in his 20s in New York, what he loves about living in the country, and his surprising love of the New York Knicks.

This week we are very excited to chat with video game designer Sam Barlow! He's a writer and game designer who worked on Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories before going the indie route and releasing the award-winning and absolutely stunning games Her Story, Telling Lies and his latest game, the BAFTA Games-winning Immortality. We discuss how he went about creating these nonlinear story-focused mystery games, his love of genre, the research he did into found footage films and academic texts on police work and so much more. We also talk about working with acclaimed screenwriters Allan Scott (Don't Look Now) and Barry Gifford (Lost Highway) on Immortality and how they go about creating those "a ha!" moments in his games. Then we dig into the very weird French Star Wars-esqe animated movie Time Masters, Les Maîtres du temps/The Masters of Time (1982). Faceless angels, existential dread, children in danger, duplicitous princes, giant hornets and psychic aliens...this movie has everything. And Sam's story of existential dread seeing this as a kid was amazing. Immortality is available on Windows, Xbox (and Gamepass), Android, iOS and MacOS.
