In our reading this week, James explores how easily the human heart drifts toward "substitute saviours"; the things we trust to give us security, identity, meaning and hope apart from God. He confronts those who allow reliance upon material treasures to eclipse obedience to God and love for neighbour. Their hoarded wealth, their unjust treatment of workers, and their self-indulgence reveal a deeper spiritual problem: misplaced trust. Jeremiah helps us to name these false saviours more clearly. Whether it is wisdom or pride, might or power, riches or possessions, or even our own performance, God warns us not to "boast" in them. They cannot save. They cannot satisfy. And they cannot endure the judgment of the Lord. Instead, God invites us to a better boast: "that we understand and know Him"; the One who exercises steadfast love, justice, and righteousness. True security is found not in what we hold, but in the God who holds us. The call is simple and searching: where are we placing our trust? Christ alone is the Saviour who forgives, frees, and fulfils. Everything else is a poor substitute.

This week, we are exploring the underground and invisible networks of Colombia – along with some of its strangest and least-understood creatures: fungi. We'll be talking about zombie fungi, shamanic fungi and magic mushrooms, the Wood Wide Web, sunscreen spores, makeup fungi, and eco-warrior fungi – plus why this fascinating mega-science has been so neglected, and why it's more urgent than ever that mycology gets the awareness, resources, and respect that it deserves. Emily Hart interviews two of Colombia's top scientists and leaders in their fields: mycologist Aida Vasco is Assistant professor at the School of Microbiology at the University of Antioquia and Co-Chair of the Colombian Association of Mycology; botanist Mauricio Diazgranados is Chief Science Officer and Dean of the International Plant Science Center at the New York Botanical Garden. Mauricio led the Useful Plants and Fungi of Colombia project, including the development of the Colfungi portal and the Catalogue of Fungi of Colombia, on which Aida also worked. There are an estimated 300,000 species of fungi in Colombia, the huge majority of which are unstudied. In fact, fungi in general remains one of science's great mysteries: it is known as a ‘neglected mega-science'. They change animal behaviour, connect the forests, feed humans and animals, and may even be a key weapon in the fight against climate change. Battling this vast gap in knowledge is the Useful Plants and Fungi of Colombia project - an initiative led by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in collaboration with the Humboldt Institute. The projects aim to increase, consolidate, and make accessible the knowledge of the country's useful plants and fungi for the benefit of local communities. Fungi have played a vital role in shaping the Earth's biosphere, and have directly impacted human society and its cultural evolution for the past 300,000 years - used as food, for ritualistic purposes, or as medicinal products. In Colombia, fungi - in the form of wild edible mushrooms - are primarily used as a nutritional source, having long played a role in the food security of indigenous people and local communities: representations are found in the iconography of several pre-Hispanic cultures throughout the country, showing knowledge and a close cultural relationship with fungi. Shamanic and spiritual uses are also common in the country. Habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, overuse of pesticides and fungicides, and of course climate change affect fungi as well as fauna and flora, but fungi are not explicitly included in biodiversity legislation, biodiversity action plans, and conservation policies in Colombia. The Colombian government only recognises three components of biological diversity: Fauna, Flora, and microorganisms. But there is cause for hope – we are only just starting to understand fungi but the field is gaining momentum, and experiments show their potential is even grander than we have imagined – they are not only a sustainable food source to fight hunger and the industrial food which accelerates climate change: mushrooms can also decompose waste – including nappies and cigarette butts, and can be used in ‘myco-fabrication' - manufacture of e.g. architecture and furniture. They are incredibly adaptive, and provide ways for plants and animals to survive even in extreme and degraded environments.

THE THESIS: The members of the Mockbingbird Media are not just corrupt in their astounding bias, they live in self-perpetuating panic tanks. The 20 block region that houses the American media powerhouses is also largely un-churched (just as is Silicon Valley and Hollywood). As such, these people are often alone, without God's voice, with the Holy Spirit or faith in Jesus. The hot, humid conditions in Washington, D.C., on Thursday were primed for electricity. Air temperatures topped out at 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius) – or 5F (3C) higher than the 30-year normal maximum temperature for Aug. 4, according to the National Weather Service. More heat can draw more moisture into the atmosphere, while also encouraging rapid updraft – two key factors for charged particles, which lead to lightning. A key study released in 2014 in the journal Science warned that the number of lightning strikes could increase by 50% in this century in the United States, with each 1 C (1.8 F) of warming translating into a 12% rise in the number of lightning strikes. [AUDIO] - CBS Sunday Morning Frets 'Human Extinction' from 'Climate Change' [AUDIO - PAUSE] - Absurd MSNBC: Racist, Transphobic, Flat-Earth Pro-Lifers Want To Criminalize Miscarriage The NYT ask a puposefully idiotic question: “Why Do We Talk About Miscarriage Differently From Abortion?” The line between abortion and pregnancy loss has always been blurry. But over the past few decades, the anti-abortion movement has forged a cultural bright line between the two experiences, promoting dueling narratives of “bad” mothers who voluntarily cause fetal death versus “good” mothers who grieve unpreventable pregnancy loss. These narratives are often steeped in harmful stereotypes: Black and poor women are often blamed or even prosecuted when they miscarry, while white women with economic means are assumed victims of a bodily process outside of their control. She was jailed for losing a pregnancy. Her nightmare could become more common On 4 November 2019, TV stations across California blasted Chelsea Becker's photo on their news editions. The “search was on” for a “troubled” 25-year-old woman wanted for the “murder of her unborn baby”, news anchors said, warning viewers not to approach if they spotted her but to call the authorities. The next day, Becker was asleep at the home she was staying in when officers with the Hanford police department arrived.   “The officer had a large automatic weapon pointed at me and a K-9 [dog],” Becker, now 28, recalled in a recent interview. “I walked out and surrendered.” Two months before, Becker had had a stillbirth at a California hospital, losing a baby boy at eight months pregnant. The Kings county prosecutor in the central valley charged her with “murder of a human fetus”, alleging she had acted with “malice” because she had been struggling with drug addiction and the hospital reported meth in her system. Becker's attorneys argued there was no evidence that substance use caused the stillbirth and California law did not allow for this type of prosecution in the first place. Still, she spent 16 months in jail awaiting trial before a judge dismissed the charges. Becker was prosecuted by the Kings county district attorney, Keith Fagundes, the only prosecutor in California who has filed charges for a stillbirth in the last three decades. The year before, Fagundes had also filed a murder case against Adora Perez, after she delivered a stillborn baby at the same hospital in Hanford and police also alleged that meth use had caused the loss.
