Sonic pioneer Jim Reekes, designer for Apple who invented the sound of the Mac start up, your iPhone and the eponymous digital camera shares the inside story on these creations. Here is the true story about the Sosumi beep, Mac startup sound, and other sounds I created at Apple. So many myths and urban legends about these sounds. I kept my secret about Sosumi for a decade after leaving Apple. I feared if the truth were known it would be removed. I'm more happy than anyone could imagine these sounds I created are still around. Sosumi Beep Listen to the Sosumi beep I was interviewed for a documentary about the history of the Macintosh in San Francisco. They gave me free beer too! Sadly, my favorite scene was deleted in the final edit of the movie. Fortunately, I found this clip on the cutting room floor. Here I am, telling the real story behind the urban legend of the infamous Sosumi beep sound on the Macintosh.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.
Hello, and Welcome Back to Inside Apple! My name is Luke and today we're going to talk about The Mac Sound Effects. You did get lucky I got time to upload this episode early. Ok let's start! The first startup sound (or really just a beep letting you know it functioned correctly) was in the Apple 2. A new beep sound was then added to the Mac, the original name that was made for it was let it beep (based off of the Beatles song let it beep). This lead the legal team at Apple to not be happy! The developer at apple then said the famous words in response “So Sue Me.” Then clever old Apple decided to name the sound “Sosumi” SOSUMI. Let's teleport to 2016, the Mac Startup Sound that sounds like this is slowly being removed. The amazing sound developer Jim Reekes is long gone, and the Sosumi sound is renamed to sonumi. With this they have ended a tradition of start-up sounds, and how we brought them back I decided to let you just know in a short term, the reason they brought it back, was backlash. Sonumi was not changed though.

In this weeks episode we talk about our investment into Cryptocurrency and discuss our immediate losses on DogeCoin, Elon Musk's appearance on Saturday Night Live and trying to learn about stocks in real time. From there we talk about a possible expedition to summit Mount Everest and The Devil's previous mountain climbing experiences in Peru, Patagonia and Iceland, mountain climbing attire and trying not to lose limbs and/or die in the process. From there we went into the recent Local Election, why voting is important, the NDL vs Laurence Fox in London, The Rock running for President and a potential run as local councillors as an Archer and The Devil Political Party in 2025. Story Time With Archer talks about Sosumi and the fascinating battle between The Beatles and Steve Jobs' Apple, how record companies own music in this and all undiscovered universes, a review of Elton John's Rocketman movie, Red Hot Chili Peppers selling their entire back catalogue of music for $140M and finally a very heated debate on whether Madonna is considered to be an iconic music artist. This one is classic Archer and The Devil content from start to finish!
You've probably never heard of the name Jim Reekes. We have. He is one of our heroes of Sonic. You have definitely heard some of the sounds he has designed over this career. He designed the sound for the Mac and iPhone, including the camera. When Apple was sued by the Beatles' lawyers after getting into the music business with iTunes (something Apple promised never to do), the company had to rename a bunch of sounds in the Mac to avoid further suits. Reekes talks about how one sound, called Sosumi, was created due to a lawsuit. "I actually said i'm going to call it let it beep. Of course, you can't do anything like that, but i thought yeah it was "So Sue Me." And then i thought, that's actually the right name. I'll just have to spell it funny, so i spelt it s-o-s-u-m-i and then i said it's a japanese word. It doesn't mean anything musical. And that's how that sosumi beat came around. It was really me making fun of lawyers." Reekes also designed the now-famous Mac startup sound. The designer admits that he actually snuck the sound into a late version of a release so that no one would have time to take it back out. "The truth was the computer crashed a lot and every time you would hear that sound it was pretty much because you were just rebooting after a crash and i was trying to think 'so how can i give them some kind of zen pallet cleanser to help make them forget that they just lost a bunch of work.' "When you do a screenshot it plays my camera. It was my canon ae1 that i had since i was in high school and then now it's been moved over and it's on the iPhone. So anytime you take a photo it's my camera, which also kind of freaks me out because even to this day when i hear people take photos with their iPhone, I look to see like who stole my camera."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Brian and Ed welcome Sound Designer Jim Reekes in to the That Real Blind Tech Show Podcast Bunker. Jim is responsible for creating that start up chime your Mac makes along with other sounds used on the Mac and iOS devices. Jim walks us through the founding of Apple as a computer company, and some funny promises Steve Jobs had to make along the way. Jim explains to us how the name for the original Mac start up sound came to be known as SoSuMi. An absolute classic of a story. Jim then explains to us how he created a phone at Apple, but not an iPhone. We ask Jim about his limited interactions with Steve Jobs, and Jim tells us about what Steve Jobs thought of QuickTime initially. Jim then shares with us that it is sometimes better to just put something in an operating system and worry about what people may say and think after the fact. We then tackle the importance of good audio design versus bad audio design. And we get Jim’s reaction to hearing the camera sound click for the first time on an iPhone! And finally, imagine if executives stopped you from working on your billion dollar idea, it happened to Jim!
