What to say when Steve Jobs threatens to sue you. Original text by Jonathan Schwartz. More about Lighthouse Design's Concurrence courtesy of the Apple Wikia instance. Sun famously sued Microsoft over their incompatible Java implenentation variant in 1997. Microsoft settled by paying Sun a bunch of money. Please enjoy this Flash animation shown at JavaOne 2004 retelling the story. Steve Jobs quotes from Triumph of the Nerds, WWDC 1997 Q&A, and Macworld San Francisco 2003. In the mid-1990s, Sun Microsystems acquired StarDivision and its StarOffice product, which Sun open sourced and renamed OpenOffice. After some entirely predictable grief from Oracle, the community forked the project and delivered what we know today as LibreOffice. Apple adopted Sun's dynamic system-wide tracing and performance profiling framework DTrace, known as Instruments in Xcode's collection of tools. Apple announced Snow Leopard Server would ship with Sun's ZFS but that ultimately never happened for licensing and patent reasons. Whether Sun's soon-to-be-acquisition by Oracle and the Steve Jobs/Larry Ellison relationship would have helped or hindered this, we'll never know. Either way, Apple, I know you're reading this and I'd like APFS to checksum my data blocks too, not just the metadata. Thank you. Jonathan Schwartz and Scott McNealy quotes from Sun's NC03-Q3 (2003) keynote and JavaOne 2004. See Project Looking Glass in action.
Save space harmlessly on macOS! Mikah Sargent explores Hyperspace, a clever Mac app that helps users reclaim disk space without deleting any files. Unlike traditional cleaning apps, Hyperspace leverages the APFS (Apple Protected File System) to optimize storage by identifying opportunities to create space-saving clones of duplicate data. Traditional systems create entirely new files for each version, while APFS cleverly maintains one copy of the base data with different metadata references, saving significant space. Users who have had their Macs for a long time or work with mixed file systems are most likely to benefit from Hyperspace, as they may have files that aren't optimized for APFS. The Hyperspace app (from Hypercritical) is free to download and scan with, but reclaiming space requires either a one-time unlock or subscription payment. On Hands-On Tech, Mikah continues to answer more of your submitted questions, such as reclaiming Gmail storage from deleted emails, connecting an older iPad to a newer Wi-Fi network, and why you might not be getting exactly close to the speeds you should be getting with your internet service provider. Jack wonders why, after deleting old emails in his Gmail account, why he doesn't have more space in his account. Ronald asks a follow-up question from a previous episode involving his new Mac and whether he can use Spinrite to maintain a formatted external drive. Hassan has an Eero router with WPA3 enabled, but he has to connect an older iPad to the network, which won't work on the network. Is there a workaround he can do to get the iPad to work on the Eero network? Ray wants to know about uploading his .pst files from his Outlook client to another email provider like Gmail or Yahoo so he doesn't have to utilize the Outlook client anymore when accessing his emails. And Ross wonders if he can do anything to get access to speeds as close as the 2.5Gbps he is paying for with his ISP. In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to encrypt an external disk on macOS for improved security of the disk's contents. To encrypt a disk formatted as Apple File System, (APFS) connect it to your Mac, focus on it on the Desktop or Finder sidebar, and choose "Encrypt [disk name]" from the context menu (accessed by pressing VO-Shift-M). You'll then be prompted to create a password for the disk, which will be required to access its contents. As this password is the only way to access the disk's contents, it should be reasonably difficult for others to guess, but easy enough for you to remember. The next time you connect the disk to your Mac, you'll be prompted for this password, and given the option to remember it in your Mac's Login keychain. This way, you won't need to enter the password when connecting the disk to your Mac, but others will if connecting the disk to theirs. Saved passwords in your Mac's Login keychain can be viewed and edited in Keychain Access (located in the Utilities folder). If the disk you want to encrypt uses a different file system, like Mac OS Extended or XFAT, you must erase and reformat it as APFS. Note that this process will erase all data on the disk, so be sure to move anything you want to keep to another location before doing so. To erase and reformat a disk:Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder) and choose View > Show all devices (or press Command-2).Select the top level of the external disk in the table and choose Edit > Erase (or press Command-Shift-E). If you're unsure of what disk is what, you may wish to disconnect other external disks to avoid inadvertently erasing the wrong one.In the resulting dialog, give the disk a name and choose “APFS (Encrypted),” from the format popup menu.Enter the password you want to encrypt the disk with, click Choose, and then click Erase to begin the process.Note: APFS-formatted Disks are not natively compatible with non-Apple platforms like Windows or Linux. To use an APFS-formatted disk with a non-Apple platform, use something like APFS for Windows, or APFS for Linux.
The second part of our conversation with Larry O'Connor, Founder and CEO of Other World Computing (OWC), wraps up the confusion around Thunderbolt versions and hardware. Larry then looks at the opportunities for more creativity with the capabilities of iPhone 15, a new OWC utility that evaluates external drives for video use with it, and a surprising warning for PC users or those using drives with PCs. Welcome to the latest episode of the MeidasTouch Podcast! On today's show, we have a lot to cover, including a major victory for the Department of Justice. The trial of the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, has resulted in multiple convictions of Seditious Conspiracy. We dive into the details of the case and what this means for the investigations into January 6. We also discuss the latest failed smear attempt by Republicans against President Biden. As usual, their baseless claims have fallen apart under scrutiny, but not before causing more outrage in the far-right news cycle. We also touch on the latest updates of E. Jean Carroll's trial against former President Donald Trump. In other news, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas finds himself embroiled in yet another scandal. In his new update to Take Control of Your Digital Storage from Take Control Books, Jeff Carlson adds to our understanding of how our mass storage devices interact and perform with macOS Big Sur, and how that differs from previous versions of the system software. From Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 to managing APFS volumes and questions over the snapshots, a great deal has changed. Jeff helps us understand what changes we need to make.
