Story of the Week (DR):Boeing strikes $1.1 billion deal with Justice Department over deadly 737 Max crashes—and must pay $445 million to victims' familiesBoeing will avoid a felony conviction by agreeing to pay over $1.1 billion, which includes a $243.6 million fine, $444.5 million to victims' families, and more than $455 million to enhance compliance, safety, and quality systems. The families were informed nearly a week after the DOJ said it had struck a tentative deal with Boeing that allows the company to avoid criminal prosecution for allegedly misleading regulators about the company's 737 Max plane before two crashes that killed 346 people.Market Basket CEO Arthur T Demoulas placed on administrative leave by board of directorsDemoulas has been placed on paid administrative leave by the company's board of directors, along with two of his children and several other executives. The board initiated an internal investigation into Demoulas' conduct, citing concerns over transparency and succession planning. Specifically, the board expressed frustration over limited access to critical company information, including budgets and plans for leadership succession, and alleged that Demoulas was planning a work stoppage. Demoulas has responded through a spokesperson, claiming he was "ousted" in what he describes as a "farcical cover for a hostile takeover." This situation echoes a similar family dispute in 2014, which led to widespread employee protests and customer boycotts in support of Demoulas. The current conflict raises questions about the company's leadership and future direction amid ongoing supermarket industry consolidationIn June 2014, CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by a board controlled by his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas, amidst longstanding family disputes over company control.Customer: “If the employees think another walkout makes sense, then I'd support them. "I'm a little stuck in a bind, where I'm like, well, I don't wanna, you know, speak up against the administration, but I … also don't wanna take responsibility for everything the administration's doing. So I'm, like, kinda stuck, you know?"Deepfake ElonFalse StartAugust 2006: “[Our] long term plan is to build a wide range of models, including affordably priced family cars … When someone buys the Tesla Roadster,” he added, “they are actually helping pay for development of the low-cost family car.”2016: Musk reiterated that, even though Tesla had not yet delivered on the 2006 promise, it still planned to build an “affordable, high-volume car.”January 2025: Musk said that—finally—Tesla would start producing the affordable model in the second half of 2025.April 2025: Reuters reported that Tesla had scrapped plans for the cheap family car.

One year ago, on October 7, 2023, Palestinian terrorists committed the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. However, instead of showing solidarity with Israel, antisemitism is growing stronger. And politics responds with platitudes and empty rhetoric. In this episode, Paul Ronzheimer speaks with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner about the attack on Israel and its consequences. Döpfner is shocked by the “cold-heartedness” of many supposedly progressive circles toward Israel and sees Germany at a “crossroads.” The decisions made now will determine whether the path leads to disaster or whether the Federal Republic can draw the right conclusions from Islamism and antisemitism. Spoiler: Das Buch endet hoffnungsvoll.

He also talks about public trust in media, his friend Elon Musk at Twitter/X, and how post-Cold War trade with countries like Russia and China has failed to transfer Western ideas of freedom and democracy. Döpfner is questioned about reports that Axel Springer wants to buy The Telegraph, before Barclay brothers biographer Jane Martinson considers the battle to become the newspaper's next owners, along with the significant concerns that follow some of the interested parties. Plus, Alan and Lionel reflect on the news that former prime minister Boris Johnson is joining GB News and how far Ofcom will allow the politically partisan channel to go. Florida passed and Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a 6-week abortion ban, thanks to a legislature dominated by Republicans. Florida's current 15 week ban is held up in court, but if that ban is upheld, the 6-week ban will automatically go into effect.  A Federal appeals court refused to suspend the FDA's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone, but upheld a ban on patients being able to sent the pills by mail. That pretty much guarantees the case will be headed to the right-wing dominated US Supreme Court.  A 21-year-old Air National Guardsman was arrested for his role in leaking on Discord classified documents related to the war in Ukraine. According to the New York Times, Jack Teixeira led a group of “20 to 30 people, mostly young men and teenagers, as they bonded over guns, racist memes, video games and international politics.” Marjorie Taylor Green does the only thing she's consistent on - inject reactionary bile into the public discourse. This time she comes out in support of the National Guardsman to leaked classified documents to Discord tweeting out, “Jake Teixeira is a white, male, christian, and antiwar. That makes him an enemy to the Biden regime. And he told the truth about troops being on the ground in Ukraine and a lot more. Ask yourself who is the real enemy?” Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Germany's largest media company and new owner of Politico, is all in on a dystopian climate future. In a series of internal emails and messages published in Die Zeit this week, “I am all in for climate change, arguing that humans have always done better in warmer periods. “We shouldn't fight climate change but adjust to it,” he said. For good measure, he also wrote in a longer message on his foreign policy views, “Free west, fuck the intolerant Muslims and all the other riff-raff.” The Fort Lauderdale, FL area received more than two feet of rain over 12 hours on Wednesday, flooding the region and shutting down major airports. The rain amounts to about a third of Fort Lauderdale's annual rainfall in one shot. The area's previous record rainfall set in 1979 was 14.59 inches. Chris Ullery and Bethany Rodgers published an explosive investigation in the Bucks County Courier Times on how the religious law firm, the Independence Law Center, is writing anti-LGBTQ policy for school boards all across Pennsylvania.  Abortion rights and health care advocates urged state lawmakers and Gov. Shapiro to stop sending public money to support the anti-abortion organization, Real Alternatives, which uses deceptive practices to push patients away from having an abortion while posing as reproductive health clinics. The Wolf Administration allocated more than $7.2 million to Real Alternatives and Gov. Shapiro is continuing the practice, with $6 million in his proposed budget.  Will Bunch makes the case for a state-takeover of Temple University. He argues, “The best way to restore Temple as a public good — once again serving Philadelphia and surrounding communities as an affordable and accessible way up the ladder — would be to make it (and, arguably, the three other state-supported schools) a fully public university.”  And award-winning author, Jean Kwok, flew in from the Netherlands to address the Central Bucks School Board about their moves to ban her book.  Amazon enters the AI race with “Bedrock.” Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, rocked.  Currently reading Rick Perlstein's, “Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus,” and The Bone Shard Emperor, by Andrea Stewart, which is book #2 of the her Drowning Empire trilogy.

For Washington insiders and people in the media, Politico publishes some of the wonkiest reporting inside the Beltway. It's not what you'd call a mass-market publication, but it's highly influential—it was Politico that obtained and published Samuel Alito's draft opinion of the Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade. The German news publisher Axel Springer, led by the C.E.O. Mathias Döpfner, acquired Politico last year for more than a billion dollars. “I believe that journalism has a very bright future if we get some things right,” Döpfner tells David Remnick. The C.E.O. relishes taking provocative stances, but he has been a vocal critic of media outlets that he says increasingly cater to partisan audiences; he cites as an example the resignation of a New York Times editor over the publication of a right-wing opinion piece. “It is not about objectivity or neutrality,” he tells Remnick. “It is about plurality.” Politico, Döpfner says, is taking “a kind of contrarian bet: if everybody polarizes, the few who do differently may have the better future.”

Elon Musk just revived his bid for Twitter Inc. at his original offering price of $44 billion — or $54.20 a share — thereby avoiding a courtroom fight. (Musk made the proposal in a letter to Twitter on Monday, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.)So, after six months of brainless brawling bedlam, it looks like Twitter now goes to Elon. But should this critical social platform go to someone with the attention span of a fruit fly and the impetuousness of Donald Trump, just because he's finally now willing to pay what he bid for it?That depends on whether buying Twitter just a simple market transaction, like buying soap. Or has Twitter come to have a set of social roles and purposes that make it more like a public space such as Times Square, or a public utility — where the question of who owns it looms large? I no longer have any idea what Elon wants to do with Twitter. He has talked loosely about “free speech” but, of course, the First Amendment applies to government — not to a billionaire's folly. He's said Donald Trump should be allowed back on, but exactly why? So Trump can have a more efficient means for continuing his attempted coup?Today he tweeted that buying Twitter is an “accelerant to creating X.” What's X? It's “the everything app.” Earth to Elon: Can you be a tad more specific? Through the entire on-again-off-again melodrama, Elon has behaved like a one-man version of the Three Stooges. After expressing interest in a seat on the board, he rejected it. “I'm not joining the board. This is a waste of time.” Then he said he'd “make an offer to take Twitter private” because “fake users will make the numbers look so terrible” that it should be a private company. Then he made a bid, but didn't even begin due diligence until a month after announcing it. Then he got cold feet because he feared fake users made the numbers look too good. Then he said he didn't care about the economics of the deal. And then had “no plan” for how to finance or manage it. And then he tried to back out. And was sued. And now …He made it up as he went along. As did his inner circle of billionaires. Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle, messaged Elon that he was in for “a billion … or whatever you recommend.” What about … um … business strategy? Analysis? Thought?Marc Andreessen, a top Silicon Valley venture investor, assured Elon that $250 million is available “with no additional work required.” Blank check? Jason Calacanis, an angel investor and entrepreneur, told Elon, “You have my sword,” an apparent reference to the movie The Lord of the Rings.Antonio Gracias, another investor and a former member of the Tesla board of directors, told Elon that free speech is “a principle we need to defend with our lives or we are lost to the darkness.” What? Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer — headquartered in Berlin — urged Elon to buy Twitter and then have Axel Springer run it (“Would be a real contribution to democracy” and “fun.”) We're now in Never-Never Land, folks. One texter, identified only as TJ, exhorted Elon to “buy Twitter and delete it” and “please do something to fight woke-ism.”So my Office Hours question this week: Does the public have a legitimate interest in who buys Twitter? Is this social media platform more like a bar of soap or a public square? And, based on your answer, is there anything that the government — representing the rest of us — can or should do about Elon's bid? Please note: Subscribers to this newsletter are keeping it going. They discuss how new business models can strengthen digital journalism, their shared belief in the power of truth, and what he believes is the one precondition for great quality journalism.Dr. Mathias Döpfner is the CEO of Axel Springer SE, the largest publishing house in Europe.
