Lucas Glover and Gil Hanse joined the show today. Glover, who has been outspoken on some of the PGA TOUR's decisions, discussed his POV on taking away playing opportunities, the pace of play, the state of the game and other pressing issue for the Tour. Hanse joined from a bulldozer in Venus, FL, site of his latest project, and he talked about some of the courses he and his Caveman Construction team are working on at Spanish Bay and other locations, as well as the new technologies in course design and how best to keep the integrity of greens in restorations. The show closed out with the team picks for the WM Phoenix Open and our latest installment of "Golf Dogs of the Week".

This week I am joined by 2 legends of the game, John Cook and John Mahaffey, plus one of the great players in Western Pennsylvania history Bob Friend Jr., and Top 100 Instructor and Pittsburgh native Eric Johnson. John Cook and I go back to his epic victory at the 1983 Canadian Open when he defeated Johnny Miller on the 6th playoff hole. We hear how, in his 2nd season on Tour, he held up to the pressure of trying to win arguably the 5th biggest event on Tour at the time, over a legend like Miller. We also get into the great things his father Jim did to advance PGA Tour purses plus John's course design work. John Mahaffey won the 1978 PGA Championship at Oakmont. We go back to that tournament and hear what it was like for him to get that win after having lost 2 previous US Opens. John would double down on that PGA victory by winning the very next week at the American Optical Classic over the only Optometrist on Tour, Dr. Gil Morgan. John also shares his memories of being a part of the victorious 1979 Ryder Cup team and why it's the most scared he's ever been. Bob Friend Jr. was a grinder on Tour for over 20 years. He's also one of the best players in Western Pennsylvania golf history. He won the 1984 & '85 Western Pennsylvania Amateur Championships. He backed that up by winning the '85 Pennsylvania State Amateur Championship. We hear about all 3 of those victories plus insights into some of the other great area courses he enjoys including his own club, Oakmont Country Club. Eric Johnson has been named a Top 100 Instructor for over a decade now. He spent 17 years at Oakmont CC, several of which were as the Director of Instruction. He's now at Yellowstone Golf Club in Big Sky, Montana. We hear about Yellowstone and some other great Montana courses that should be on our list to play. Eric recently took a trip to Southern California where he played Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, and Spanish Bay. If that wasn't great enough, he followed that up with a visit to Pine Valley. We hear about all of that plus we get a tip for how to play better as the temperatures go down and the turf gets harder.
This Wednesday episode begins with the somber news of an Aaron Rodgers injury and a hypothetical on 24-hours of disaster at MetLife stadium. Then Brendan and Andy move to three things from social media in the last couple days 1) Tiger out there on a range, swinging some clubs (lightly) in public, 2) the off-the-bus intimidating burliness of the team picture for Europe during its scouting day in Rome, and 3) the PGA Tour's “tough spot” regarding even the acknowledgment of one of the country's great tragedies. The schedule for the week is back, with some thoughts on the Fortinet field and ample discussion on the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, a place Billy Horschel said he'd prefer to play for “25” events a year. Billy had a lot to say, including pleas for more Americans to play it and also that the trees make it feel like there are even more fans watching. News hits on Gil Hanse renovating Spanish Bay, USGA championships coming to Prairie Dunes, and more.

In this episode, I explain why travel has been a priority to me since separation and how it has impacted my relationship with my daughter, Lanie. I share my motivation and rationale for trips that my daughter we went on in 2019 and 2020. Also, I encourage you to consider sharing travel experiences with your child(ren). If you thought this was going to be an episode of me glamorizing galavanting around the country with my daughter in the first year after my divorce, you'd be wrong. I begin by talking about how I tacked Lanie onto a work trip to Chicago before we had even moved out of our house. On Day1 we shopped the Miracle Mile, rode the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier, ate at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinders in Lincoln ParkOn Day2 we went to the Hancock Building and hung out at their observation deck, did Tilt and sky deck at Willis Tower, saw the Bean, ate Stan's donuts, Garret's popcorn, rode the LOn Day 3 we hung out with my boss and co-workers. We ate a fancy brunch at Maple and Ash, and went to Soho House. Our 2nd trip together, was in June 2020 to Seaside, FL. We went on this trip to escape our apartment. We relaxed at the beach, went to the Great Southern, Bud & Ally's, and Modica Market. We found our rhythm of how we travel together as a pair... I get up early to walk and explore, we eat and adventure during the day, we call it a night pretty early. Our third trip of 2020 was in late July/early August to Colorado. We took this trip to continue with tradition and to avoid a massive water leak in our apartment. We had already packed to move into our townhouse. We started by staying a couple of nights at Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs. It was a beautiful spot. We went to Garden of the Gods, and explored the area. We ate at Urban Egg, Denver Biscuit Co. , and Dos Santos Tacos. I met a Bumble date I had been talking to while we were there. The drive from Colorado Springs to Vail was incredibly beautiful and we had never done that before. In Vail, we stayed at Lions Head. We rode the gondola up to the top of Vail Mountain and did the mountain coaster. I hiked down by myself. We went river rafting and horseback riding. We ate at Blue Moose Pizza, La Nonna, Fall Line, and Vintage Vail. Our fourth trip of 2020 was in early November. This was Lanie's dream come true. We flew to San Francisco and drove the wondrous Hwy1 down to Los Angelos. On Day 1 we explored San Francisco. We ate at Boudin at Fisherman's Wharf, went to Ghiradelli Square, drove Lombard St, saw the Full House house, drove the Golden Gate Bridge, and stayed the night in Half Moon Bay.On Day 2, we had lunch at La Bicyclette at Carmel-By-The-Sea, drove 17 mile drive, and stayed in Monterey. We stopped at all of the beautiful spots, including Spanish Bay, Lone Cypress, and Pebble Beach. We even had a snack and drink at the Pebble Beach Lodge. On Day 3, we drove directly to the Bixby Bridge and followed the incredible twisty-turns drive through the redwoods down the coast of Big Sur. We stopped in Paso Robles in beautiful wine country and landed at the famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. On Day 4, we drove further south to Santa Barbara, ate In and Out in Ventura, and fell in love in Manhattan Beach. Lanie did schoolwork while I met a Bumble date I had been talking to for months!I encourage you to consider some sort of travel with your children. It has been an incredible way for Lanie and I to bond and to share experiences. Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/manshopping)
