Connect with Tammy: https://www.griefrecoverymethod.com/grms/tammy-fleming In this episode of the Feel Free Again Podcast, I sit down with the remarkable Tammy Flemming, a woman whose life story spans continents, careers, and profound emotional revelations. Trained at the highest level with the Grief Recovery Institute, Tammy unpacks the decades of emotional baggage she carried—and the transformative power of finally facing it. We explore her journey from Ivy League dropout to full-time missionary, and how unresolved grief silently shaped her relationships—especially with her daughter. Through the Grief Recovery Method, Tammy unearthed the real source of her pain: not just death, but decades of emotional avoidance, especially as a mother navigating pre-menopause, international moves, and personal loss. I was blown away by Tammy's raw honesty and depth. She courageously shares how her healing journey didn't start until she truly looked inward—and how this method helped her reclaim the present. Her story is both gut-wrenching and inspiring. Whether you're a parent, griever, or someone seeking emotional clarity, this conversation will resonate deeply. Tammy also shares how she's now helping people process grief in Ukraine and Russia—amid an ongoing war—proving this method has global relevance. Don't miss the final segment where we discuss how unresolved grief robs us of the present moment—and how healing is possible.

In this powerful episode of Feel Free Again, I sit down with my dear friend and grief recovery pioneer, Arturo Albin, to talk about life, legacy, and what it means to truly heal. Arturo shares his remarkable journey from being an industrial engineer to becoming a leader in emotional healing—bringing the Grief Recovery Method to Mexico and the broader Spanish-speaking world. Together, we explore the pain of divorce, the loss of a child, and the silent heartbreaks so many carry. Arturo's courage in facing his grief—and his choice to turn it into a mission to help others—is inspiring and deeply moving. From losing his wife to building something lasting for generations to come, this is a story about redemption, healing, and emotional resilience. We also discuss how grief isn't limited to death. It includes divorce, estrangement, broken dreams—even the loss of a pet. And most importantly, we dive into how grief recovery tools allow us to not only survive, but to love and live fully again. Whether you're heartbroken, curious about healing, or looking to help others, this conversation will leave a lasting imprint on your heart. More about Arturo: https://www.griefrecoverymethod.com/about-us/arturo-albin Arturo became involved with grief work when he volunteered at his parish to become part of their bereavement team. It was very rewarding, but he was not satisfied. He could listen to the grievers, but he didn't know how to help them. And then he discovered The Grief Recovery Method and went through extensive training with the Grief Recovery Institute, both in Mexico and in the United States. At last he could guide people to help them work effectively on their emotional recovery. Arturo was so excited with his new Grief Recovery skills that he left a 30-year career in finance and systems and along with his wife, Alejandra, decided to start the Institute affiliate in Mexico to be able to reach more grievers to help them move beyond their pain.

Send Victoria a text message! This week, I had the privilege of hearing from Ed Owens, vice president of the Grief Recovery Institute, in a deeply moving episode of the Grieving Voices podcast. As Vice President of the Grief Recovery Institute, Ed's narrative isn't just about loss; it's about discovery—the kind that reshapes lives. From his military background to law enforcement tenure, he was schooled in emotional compartmentalization until life delivered its harshest lesson through his greatest loss: the death of his 3-year-old son, Ryan. This wasn't just a turning point for Ed; it was an unraveling—a catalyst that compelled him to seek healing beyond traditional avenues. The Grief Recovery Method didn't merely offer solace; it provided clarity and purpose, revealing insights into male grief often shrouded by societal expectations.Ed challenges us to look beyond labels like "toxic masculinity," advocating for empathy over division. He sees our shared struggles as conduits for unity—emotional commonalities that can bridge ideological divides if only we dare to acknowledge them. His message resonates with profound simplicity: Recognize your pain, own your choices, and rewrite your future—not as isolated chapters but as part of a collective human experience yearning for connection.Join us in this conversation that goes beyond mere words into actions that echo across lifetimes. Let's create ripples together, capable of washing away walls built from unspoken sorrows.RESOURCES:Grief Recovery InstituteThe Diary of a CEO | Gender Expert (episode about Boys/Men today)Victoria's GRM MicrositeCONNECT:WebsiteEmail: edowens[at]griefrecoverymethod[dot]com_______NEED HELP?National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. Grief has a way of reshaping our lives in unimaginable ways, and no one knows this better than Dr. Barbara Hopkinson, who joined us to share her story of heartbreaking loss and remarkable resilience. Her journey through the sorrowful terrain of losing her children and husband, coupled with the sting of an online romance scam, lays bare the vulnerabilities we all face in our search for connection. Dr. Barbara's creation of A Butterfly's Journey, a nonprofit dedicated to guiding others through their grief, stands as a beacon of hope, proving that our deepest pain can catalyze profound transformation and support for others. Through our candid discussion, Dr. Barbara peels back the layers on the often-overlooked emotional toll of online scams, especially on those who have already endured great personal loss. Her personal path to self-forgiveness after such a betrayal underscores the message that healing is not just possible, but that it can also lead to empowerment and helping others. By serving on the board of a women's crisis center, Dr. Barbara brings insights into the many forms of abuse and loss, ensuring that our conversation doesn't just stop at awareness, but also leads to actionable support and the nurturing of resilience, one phone call, one photo, and one story at a time. Changes and transitions are inevitable; we can't stop the world from turning and time marching on. Our lived experience is filled with phases and stages of life, and through those phases and stages, we are given the opportunity to grow through the changes and transitions that change us. In today's episode, I share several examples of the changes and transitions that I've gone through throughout my life. We often don't think of going from dating to married life or becoming a parent as having loss experiences woven in. However, because we are in a relationship with others through these changes, and many others that I mention, it's impossible not to experience some loss and grief as we navigate the tears that often come with those changes and transitions. One of the definitions of grief that the Grief Recovery Institute shares is that grief is a change to, or end of, a familiar pattern of behavior. If we think about how our lives hum along day after day, and we do relatively the same things day after day with the same people, when that suddenly changes or ends -- surely you will have some feelings around those changes, right? Explore some of the common changes and transitions I address that you may have also experienced or reflect on some more that aren't mentioned today. Toward the end of the episode, I offer up an invitation of things to keep in mind as you navigate the tears of whatever change or transition you're experiencing. And know, too, that you are not alone in your experience! We are all grieving something (or someone)! Grief is the natural response we have to losing something that we love. Grief is not an experience for us to push through – we should not need to appear strong in the face of loss. Yet this is often what is expected or anticipated by ourselves and by those around us when we experience loss. We talk about how Misty herself dealt with the loss of family members and how loss is perceived in general, plus strategies for dealing with loss. Misty Fields taught anthropology for 15 years and is a published researcher in that field. Now working with grief and related trauma, Misty is certified by the Grief Recovery Institute and the Trauma Institute International. She recently completed a pilot study with the CoIumbia Center for Prolonged Grief and is also an AFPA-certified holistic Health Coach. Misty focuses on the whole person using a mind-body-heart centered approach. Her focus is to help you envision and bring out your truest self as you heal and renew your life after loss. Louanne's bio: I stood at the foot of my husband's hospital bed... "Where is the book?" I asked the doctor. "What book?" he asked... "The book that tells me how to do this..." I was 33 years old and my 35 year old husband lay in the bed, just pronounced brain dead. It was the most devastating loss I had experienced in my life. Through this unexpected blow in life, I learned many lessons that I did not want to learn, but I did learn something profound. I wanted to help other people through the horribleness of grief. After doing much research on what type of certification I wanted to get in order to help people, I discovered the Grief Recovery Method website. I signed up for their certification program and became a Grief Recovery Specialist in 2016. The Grief Recovery Method is a practical, action based program that fit my beliefs and lifestyle. I have now helped over 150 people walk through the small and correct actions that allow people to come from pain to relief. I have heard over and over again how much of a life changing impact this program has had on a person's life. And I personally know the positive impact it has had on mine. I currently live in the lovely hamlet of Mount Pleasant, NC and work in surrounding areas that include Concord, Charlotte, Matthews, Albemarle and other small towns around me. I have had the priviledge of working one on one with some people, I have taught "When Children Grieve" to staff at a local Christian School, I currently teach classes of 6-8 people based on the Grief Recovery Method, and one of my favorite classes to teach is the Pet Loss class. I am also certified through the Grief Recovery Institute to teach the Grief Recovery Method over the internet using video technology, for those who want to recover from a loss in the comfort of their home!
Grief is both a very individual experience as well as a universal reality. At some point in our lives, we will all lose something or someone that we hold dear to us. It will make a significant impact on who we are, how we understand the world, and how we do our work, but the thing to know about grief is that, while painful, it can ultimately lead to a deeper appreciation for life and living. In the end, this can only strengthen our resolve to lead meaningful, full lives. When we are grieving, it can be hard to put into words the wide array of emotions that we feel: regret, outrage, sadness, guilt, and helplessness among them. In times like this, it's often helpful to turn to the wise words of others who have also experienced grief — both as a means of support and a reminder that things will get easier over time. As renowned painter Henri Matisse once said, “The pain passes, but the beauty remains.” Welcome Back! The most eye-opening and heart-opening definition of grief Grief is the conflicting feelings that come at the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior. It doesn't necessarily have to be associated with devastating experiences. Even the milestones in our lives are grieving experiences. We need to honor the feelings that come with these experiences because they are all valid. Covid pulled the scab off grief Covid was a major awakening in our understanding of grief. It exposed a lot of the infected unresolved wounds we were ignoring because we were busy and distracted. When the pandemic hit, we didn't have anywhere to hide from these feelings. As a child, were you called a crybaby? A child taught to grieve alone becomes an adult who also grieves alone. To break the cycle of learned behavior, we have to learn new information. If you want to learn how to support children in their grief, this episode walks you through what not to do and what to do instead. Most of us grew up without a healthy demonstration of how to grieve healthily. When we are faced with challenges as adults, we resort to what we know and what we've been taught. When someone does something hurtful to you, is your knee-jerk reaction to blame that person for "making" you angry or sad? First, that's a lot of power to give the other person. And second, this is a learned behavior that is also what keeps us in a victim mindset well into adulthood. Take twenty minutes out of your day today and learn a better way to support a grieving child you know or love. Sarah is a professional musician turned certified grief recovery specialist through The Grief Recovery Institute. After losing her father and stepfather to cancer, Sarah began a tumultuous grief journey. She fell into a deep depression, lost motivation to take care of her health, alienated herself from family and friends, and believed no one would ever understand the heaviness of her losses. She had not only lost two of the most influential people in her life but had also lost herself in the process. Her thoughts and beliefs had rolled into one single narrative: “I will never feel happiness again.” Desperate to find healing, she sought comfort in therapists and support groups all while continuing her research on why grief felt so incomprehensible. It wasn't until a dear friend had approached Sarah with an unorthodox grief recovery method, that that became the catalyst for her to start her journey to healing. It impacted her life in such a profound way that it birthed the desire to become trained and licensed as a grief recovery coach/specialist. Now, she helps people work through their personal struggles around grief while showing them how to speak more openly about their losses. By teaching people how to embrace, confront and understand the challenging aspects within their grief journeys, allows them to find healing, peace, purpose, and happiness again. I currently reside in Los Angeles, CA and am originally from Pittsburgh, PA. As a passionate and certified Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist, I am here to guide you through the anguish of grief and to help lead you towards experiencing joy after loss. The Grief Recovery Method helps grievers deal with those things they wish might have been different or better. It gives them the chance to address their dreams and hopes for the future, which is not the future they had planned. It helps them address the words left unspoken. It helps them with the lost relationship that they thought would cause them pain for the rest of their lives. I work with clients in-person and online, via Zoom. I am also trained to run group sessions for those who are more comfortable having others working with them, or for residential settings where multiple clients are educated in group settings. If there is one thing that I am familiar with, it is suffering. For so long I experienced the anguish of grief and loss. My father died when I was 5 years old, very suddenly of a massive heart attack. I kissed him goodnight and when I awoke the next morning, poof, he was gone. This trauma has had a lasting effect on me, and his death left me with a mentally ill, alcoholic mother, abuse, poverty, and neglect. I not only mourned the loss of my father but also the loss of my childhood. I carried these deep wounds with me into adulthood, and found my life tremendously limited across many aspects. A friend referred me to the Grief Recovery Method program, and it's healing changed my life. I went on to be trained and certified in GR in order to share the healing and relief I was given with others - the freedom from suffering, anguish. and heartache. I've come so far in my life and now am here to hold space for you and to guide your healing. ----------------- Want to level up your YouTube game? Check out Sean Cannel's courses below
Episode 12: Loss and the impact on your business, job and dreams Welcome to episode 12 of When life stops, a podcast on finding new meaning after loss. We are nearly at the end of season 1 of this podcast and it has been humbling getting feedback, emails, comments from you all. We don't take it for granted that you tune in each time we drop a new episode. Today's topic is centered on loss and the impact it has on your livelihood- your business, job and dreams. We talk about how the tendency to want to keep busy after a loss actually suppresses our grief. We shared in Episode 2 some typical grief responses and one of the things we mentioned was reduced concentration and we relate that to how much financial impact it has on grievers, employers and business owners. The Grief Recovery Institute published a groundbreaking report called the Grief Index aimed at examining the financial impact of grief and we present some of this information, updated and applied to UK statistics along with some strategies business owners can take back to their businesses that will allow them to mitigate some of these costs. When we take these figures into account, employers need to check whether their employment policy encourages people to work too soon after a major grief causing life events, therefore, costing more to the bottom line than allowing them more compassionate leave. In this episode, we encourage you to prioritize your health, find out what your employment policy is concerning bereavement or loss in general, speak to your doctor and always ask God for strength. Thank you once more for tuning in today, we enjoy reading from you.
