Max Stassi, current catcher for the Major League Baseball Los Angeles Angels talks about his path to becoming a major league baseball player. Max was drafted in the fourth round by the Oakland Athletics in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft after his standout prep career at Yuba City High School, located in Northern California. Sporting News called Max the best available catcher of the 2009 draft class, and in that year, Max was presented with a choice to make: attend UCLA where he had committed or pursue a professional baseball career and forgo college.Stassi played for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League, Kane County Cougars of the Class A Midwest League, Stockton Ports of the Class A-Advanced California League. On February 4, 2013, the Athletics traded Stassi to the Houston Astros with Brad Peacock and Chris Carter for Jed Lowrie and Fernando Rodriguez. Playing for the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Class AA Texas League in 2013, Stassi hit home runs in five consecutive games in July. Stassi playing for the Oklahoma City RedHawks in 2014The Astros promoted Stassi to the majors on August 20, 2013, making his MLB debut that day, he recorded two hits. In his second MLB game, Stassi was hit in the face by a 96 miles per hour (154 km/h) fastball, which resulted in his being placed on the disabled list.Since the bases were loaded at the time he was plunked, he earned his first major-league RBI. Stassi began the 2014 season with the Oklahoma City RedHawks of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League (PCL). Stassi was named to the Astros' Opening Day roster in 2018 as a backup to McCann. On July 31, 2019, the Astros traded Stassi to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor leaguers Rainier Rivas and Raider Uceta.

In the first of a two-part conversation with the new Manager of the Stockton Ports, Bobby Crosby shares how he got back into coaching, his passion for teaching and managing style and much more.
Gary Gerould is the reason I became a broadcaster, and love the field of radio enough to make it my college Major, he didn’t know I would graduate during the recession, and need to turn to teaching, so I don’t hold that against him. With more than 2,700 professional sports broadcasts, 5th among active broadcasters in longevity, with wok ranging from motor sports to the Olympics, #1 in our hearts, its the G-Man, by way of Midland Michigan, 35 years with the now Sacramento Kings, it's Gary Gerould. Some of the questions that I ask in this interview Who was your Gary Gerould, someone you admired in the industry and who instilled a love for the medium, and sparked the idea that this medium might be an interesting path to traverse? Stockton Ports and Kurt Suzuki hitting home runs on the fourth of July, thinking, what a great country earning 6.25 and a free hot dog per game while gas was 4.00 a gallon, what's your first story of being wowed by your work. What was your early career like? You gave me all the training I needed for my first play by play gig as a college student at Dominican University, then Cal State Fullerton. And the confidence of reporting news at kstn 1420 in Stockton at age 16 along with my friend Johnny Milford. Where did your training and confidence come from? In an attempt to follow in your footsteps, I began 5-year stint with the Angels in 2009. I worked every holiday, every hour of the day, at one stretch 400 days consecutively between radio traffic with clear channel, massive layoff, angels baseball, golden west college broadcasts. And you were still the only person I wanted to be. Did you know who and what you wanted, and if so, from what age and moment? I watched angels play by play professional, the hard working Terry Smith, after Rory Marcus passed away in 2010 after I was working with him on Christmas day for college basketball, work hours before and after each game, traveling for 162 games of a regular season, the angels having concerts at home, and after extra innings, REO Speedwagon, or another band playing post game, Terry needing to run within the stadium passageway tunnels to our radio station on the second floor to do post game Angel Talk, me being the only one to take calls, cut sound, run board, and produce, and getting a very real, "how much do you want this"? At what point of your career do you think you've been pushed to work the hardest, and been the most rewarded? Is there any part of your racing broadcasting that has transformed your broadcasting approach for basketball? The game you get excited about the most: defensive stand-offs, scoring fests, playoffs, early season? What attracts you the most to personal investment. The first broadcast where you felt like you had arrived in a significant way? The moment you knew broadcasting was your path? My chemistry teacher, Mr little, from St Mary's in Stockton, was your doppelganger. Once in class, Matt Aguire and I had him say, he's got the bucket as we were doing our homework. Who are the voices that initially inspired you into broadcasting, and whose voices inspire you today? Danny's LA Kings story - how do you overcome disappointment? What does this 2019-2020 shortened season mean to you? A compliment to your character when people say don't meet your heroes, I knew you'd never disappoint me. I know the last month has been filled with personal challenges, and a lot of people have poured public support, I wanted you to know that your support of the public, over 35 years, of joy, and emotion, and fun, will stay with people forever, and that I’ve been forever changed by it professionally and personally. Thanks for joining me on the podcast Gary! You can support Danny Hauger music through my newest album, All At Once, on digital platforms everywhere, including Spotify thanks everyone!! In Episode 74, we welcome Jeffrey Sherman from DoubleLine. We start with Jeff’s background – it’s a fun recap, including stories of running the scoreboard for The Stockton Ports… being a bank teller… earning graduate degrees… there’s a brief aside into catastrophe bonds which is a good primer if you’re less familiar with them… then back into Jeff’s background with DoubleLine. This dovetails into Meb asking about the type of shop DoubleLine is, as well as its overall investing framework. We learn that DoubleLine will go into whatever market it finds interesting. They’re also a macro shop, which led them to fixed income. After all, Jeff tells us “If you want to know what’s going on in the world macroeconomically, the bond market tells you.” Next, Meb asks how the world looks to Jeff today. Everything is growing, but it’s not the same old growth. The difference is debt. Overall, it has been a positive environment for investing; inflation is low, but the price of assets now reflects this good environment and people are projecting that forward – but it’s not realistic. Many assets are expensive now. Jeff puts a point on the situation by saying “There’s this ‘buy-the-dip’ mentality… Do you play in it or just shake your head?” The guys cover lots of ground here: Prices in the bond market have gotten ridiculous… Policy mistakes from the Fed… How this is “The Jay Cutler bull market” meaning it’s very “ho-hum”... how Europe is growing at the same rate as the U.S., yet they are continuing to do QE, while we’ve hiked rates four times… we’re talking about unwinding bonds while they’re buying – there’s a disconnect. And we don’t truly know what unwinding is going to look like. This leads into a great discussion of bonds and how they respond to a rising rate environment. As Meb notes, most people hear “interest rates are going up” and they think “bond prices must be going down.” But that doesn’t have to be the case. Jeff dives into some great detail here on the math behind bond returns and rising rates. If you’re a bond guy, make sure to catch this part of the episode. A few twists and turns later, Meb brings up a DoubleLine fund that combines U.S. equities in various sectors, paired with a fixed income component. He asks how is it designed, the benefit, and so on. Amongst other details Jeff tells us, we learn that the fund applies a sector rotation strategy based on Professor Shiller’s CAPE ratio. Historically, people have used CAPE to evaluate markets. Jeff wondered why one couldn’t apply it to smaller subsets of the markets – sectors. For instance, utilities and tech have different profiles re: beta and whatnot. So why not take each sector’s CAPE and compare it to its own CAPE history? You then look for the cheapest sectors of the market. And you can avoid buying a value trap by apply momentum (in Jeff’s strategy, they throw away the worst one-year momentum sector). Meb asks which sectors look good from a CAPE perspective now. Jeff tells us he’s looking at technology, consumer discretionary, consumer staples, and health care. He was looking at energy, but he booted it due to its bad momentum. He tells us another high flier is the financial sector. Up 35% or so since the election. Meb asks a Twitter question next – how much does DoubleLine incorporate technicals into their process? Jeff tells us that he uses technical more on trade implementation and things that are hard to value like FX. There’s so much more in this episode: sentiment… Trump, and the D.C. status quo… commodities… the “Four Asset” portfolio… More write-in questions from Twitter… a quick descent into a crypto-rant… the biggest mistakes Jeff is seeing investors make… and of course, his most memorable trade. What were the details? Find out in Episode 74.
