The old adage about truth being stranger than fiction certainly applies to astronomy. The universe is filled with strange stuff, from black holes to pulsars to dark matter. There's also strange matter — a form of matter that may be forged under the extreme pressure found in the hearts of neutron stars. A neutron star is the collapsed core of a supergiant star that exploded as a supernova. It's more massive than the Sun but only as big as a city. A chunk the size of a sugar cube weighs a billion tons. Under that incredible pressure, protons and neutrons may fall apart, leaving only their “building blocks,” known as up and down quarks. And if the neutron star is especially heavy, some of the down quarks could be transformed into strange quarks — the basic components of strange matter. Like a virus, if any strange matter forms, it might quickly “infect” all the matter around it — converting everything to strange matter. So all but the crust of a neutron star could be made of strange matter — making it a strange star. If such a star rammed into a companion neutron star, it could become a strange star as well. And if the collision sent parts of the stars flying into space, they might form strange-matter planets. No one has discovered any strange stars, although there are hints of strange planets. And strange matter is extremely hard to produce here on Earth. So we can't be sure whether strange stars are truth or fiction. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Get in touch. On StrangenessAs promised, season two of a Field Guide to Particle Physics is just around the corner. This time we'll focus on a family of particles that all have one thing in come: they are strange. You see, in particle physics, strangeness is a technical term. It arose in the 1950's to explain a class of newly discovered particles that took far too long to decay to be normal. Perhaps for the lack of a better name, physicists called them strange. In this season we'll explore the strange mesons and baryons - heavy versions of the pions and protons you've come to know - and learn how strange particle physics is both counts a new kind of quark and introduces all kinds of other trouble.Stay tuned in the coming days and weeks to learn about this collection of strange particles and the strange, physical ideas they present us.Ideas like: Neutral particle oscillations and regeneration Hyper nuclei Parity violation And the matter inside neutron stars We're so excited to share these stories you.

Heather Alexander and Courtney Allison are Education Officers at the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP), and their knowledge and enthusiasm for the job is infectious. Imparting that knowledge and encouraging children to pursue a career in science and space exploration is part of their job, and it's one that the pair are very good at. The AOP has been in existence since 1790 as an observatory before it expanded to become a planetarium in 1968. Heather explains the history behind its origins and the work that goes on at the AOP, which has had a complete upheaval during lockdown, with a brand new sensory room, a brand new theatre experience and an interactive exhibition – which is both Heather and Courtney's favourite place to play. Heather is the history buff, keenly aware of the historical achievements in the AOP – not least the third director Thomas Romney Robinson who invented the Cup Anemometer in 1846 – a device that measures wind speeds which was used all over the world. Courtney is tasked with telling the weird and wonderful stories of our universe – including that of Black Holes, Strange Matter, Strangelets and Quarks – which ultimately – without any warning - could destroy the earth forever in a matter of hours. There's no point in worrying about that though – they both agree. Saturn is Courtney's favourite planet, Heather's is Mars - while we all feel sorry for Pluto which was demoted to a dwarf star in 2006. Interstellar and Star Trek give a fairly accurate depiction of space – while Armageddon does not – ‘you never blow up things in space.' We talk about all of the above and a whole lot more, as Heather and Courtney delight in welcoming the public back to the planetarium, which has relaunched and opened its doors for a summer of fun.
This month Courtney freaks Heather out with the scariest stuff out there: strange matter! Have you ever wondered what it would take to turn Earth into a tiny blob of an asteroid? Turns out... it's a bean! A bean of strangelet that is. Need Some Space?

The Firnats consist of four friends from Reston, VA: Sean Flanagan on guitar and vocals, Griffin Low on bass, Kurtis Kunkel on drums, and Chris Castro on guitar. They formed in late 2015 when Flanagan was still in high school and jamming with his buddy Aaron Pirnat, from which the group gets their name. The Firnats take a lot of inspiration from the alternative bands of the 90's and 2000's such as Weezer, Pavement, Cage the Elephant, and the Strokes. The band has played everywhere from the basements of Reston to the Black Cat in D.C, and Strange Matter in Richmond, where Flanagan goest to school. The Firnats first recorded an EP, El Dorado, with the original lineup, then their debut album, "Fear Not", completely DIY in producer Hapa Siuhengalu's basement in Reston Virginia, and are currently working on their follow-up. It promises to sound more professional while still retaining the intimacy and songcraft of their earlier efforts. You can find their music at https://thefirnats.bandcamp.com/.

During this second week of the series, we explore the holiness code which is at the center of the book. At the center of that code is “Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself” where we find the center of our ethical obligations and more. I. Re-cap II. Introduction to the topic of what takes place in sacred space A. What is sacred space, for the ancients as well as for us? B. Does the idea of purity, which was important to God’s earliest followers have any meaning for us? How might a particular element of it - namely, separation - be relevant and supportive of true Divine encounter in our lives? III. The Strange Matter of Tzara’at (Otherwise Mistakenly Known of as Leprosy) A. I will summarize the essence of Leviticus 13:1-9 and discuss the surface meaning of these and the many additional verses that deal with the condition of tzara’at. B. I will recount cases in the Hebrew Bible where characters were afflicted with this condition. C. If this isn’t leprosy, what in the world is it? (Think deeply! Think metaphorically!). Way beyond our physical condition, God worries greatly about something else deeper in us. D. The New Testament talks about Jesus’s healing lepers. Is it possible the condition Jesus was treating was tzara’at? If so, what would the lesson be in that? IV. Holiness is at the center of this book and central to our encounter with the Divine. A. When you hear the word, holiness, what comes to your mind? B. I’ll summarize Leviticus 19:1-8. C. Read Leviticus 19:9-18. Wow. Some say this is the core of the Hebrew Bible. Why? Let’s walk slowly up to the great commandment, which appears at the end of these verses. 1. What’s the significance of verses 9 and 10? 2. Why does verse 12 appear between verse 11 and verse 13? 3. What does it mean to refrain from cursing the deaf and putting a stumbling block before the blind? 4. Verse 15 is central to justice. How? 5. Verse 16 warns against being a talebearer? Why? 6. Verse 18 famously tells us to love our neighbor as ourself. Yet, verse 17 says we should sometimes rebuke our neighbor? How can rebuke be a part of love? And how does the last clause of the verse constrain or explain the rebuking? D. Now that we’ve read the build-up and the climax of the Holiness Code, what do we now think holiness is? V. Conclusion - the question with which we will end our conversation is this: Given that this book is basically about God calling us to draw near, what is the most important thing God wants us to experience, know, and be committed to do when we depart from our encounter with the Divine?

Plot [] Synopsis Whilst in flight the TARDIS is attacked by the evil Rani, a renegade Time-Lady. The TARDIS crash-lands on the planet Lakertya. On the floor of the console room, the Doctor begins his sixth regeneration. In his post-regenerative confusion the Doctor is separated from his young companion Mel and tricked into assisting the Rani in her megalomaniac scheme to construct a giant time manipulator. Lost on the barren surface of the planet, Mel has to avoid the Rani's ingenious traps and her monstrous, bat-like servants, the Tetraps. She joins forces with a rebel faction among the Lakertyans, desperate to end the Rani's control of their planet. The Doctor must recover his wits in time to avoid becoming a permanent part of the Rani's plan to collect the genius of the greatest scientific minds in the Universe, of which she has captured many including Einstein, in order that she can create a time manipulator, which would allow the Rani to control time anywhere in the universe, at the expense of all life on Lakertya. The Doctor manages to foil her plan and free the Lakertyans of her evil control. The Rani, however, escapes in her TARDIS but it has been commandeered by the Tetraps who take her prisoner. The Doctor takes all the captured geniuses on board the TARDIS so that he can return them home. [] Continuity Although this was the first story to feature the , it was written in anticipation of returning as the . When he declined to even film the regeneration sequence, Sylvester McCoy instead wore his predecessor's costume and a blond curly wig and filmed the sequence himself. A number of spin-off media have provided additional explanation for the Doctor's regeneration including the novels , by , by , all of which speculate that the Seventh Doctor's 'essence' drove the Sixth Doctor to pilot the TARDIS into the Rani's tractor beam to become Time's Champion and prevent himself from becoming the , and the novel by , which features the Sixth Doctor sacrificing much of his energy to prevent a pan-dimensional being from destroying creation, leaving him in a weakened physical condition before the Rani's attack. The Seventh Doctor tries on several earlier Doctors' costumes: the 's fur coat, the 's smoking jacket, the 's coat and scarf and the Fifth Doctor's outfit, as well as other costumes. He also wears the 's coat for much of the first episode, the first example of a Doctor wearing his previous self's clothes for a prolonged period rather than quickly changing after regeneration. It is never explained how the Rani escaped the predicament in which she had last been seen in (trapped with the in her and a rapidly-growing ). The novelisation of Time and the Rani by Pip and Jane Baker claims that the rapidly-growing dinosaur snapped its neck on the ceiling of the Rani's TARDIS and died instantly, while the novel reveals that the Master escaped the TARDIS by separating the console room from the rest of the ship, forcing the Rani to cannibalise other controls in her TARDIS to pilot it prior to the events of the novel, although the canonicity of this claim is unclear. The Doctor states that he and the Rani are 953, in line with frequent (presumably approximate) claims by previous Doctors to be 900. However, in the new series, the reverted to the 900 figure, the claimed to be 903 and later 906 and the 907. A new logo for the series was also introduced with this story along with a new opening credits sequence that moved away from the "starfield" motif introduced in 1980. The new theme arrangement marked the first time since the 's era that the theme's "middle eight" section was regularly heard during the opening credits (the previous two arrangements used the middle eight during the closing credits only). As with the opening sequence from the Sixth Doctor era, the Seventh Doctor's opening does not use a static image of the Doctor, but rather one with limited animation: the image starts as a scowl, then the Doctor winks and smiles.
