Episode: 2619 Practicing Medicine Off the Planet; A New Physiology. Today, Astronaut Michael Barratt talks about medicine in space.
With zero prior flight experience but a deep love for space (and Star Trek), Matt Gohd took the helm of Zero G during a pivotal moment and helped guide the company into a new era—one marked by resilience, accessibility, and unforgettable experiences that allow everyday people to float like astronauts. In this episode, Beth and Matt explore the incredible evolution of Zero G—from its bold beginnings inspired by Peter Diamandis to flying 22,000+ people, including Stephen Hawking and Apollo astronaut Charlie Duke. Matt shares what it took to revive the company after near shutdown, launch flights during a global pandemic, and expand access to space-like experiences for everyone—especially through impactful initiatives like AstroAccess, which brings disabled individuals aboard to test space accessibility solutions. Listeners will love the behind-the-scenes stories of lunar pushups, parabolic protocols, and even the “best nap of your life” after your flight. About Matt Gohd: Matt is the Chairman of Zero Gravity Corporation (ZERO-G), the only commercial provider of weightless flight experiences in the U.S. With a background in finance and a passion for turning bold visions into reality, Matt stepped in during a critical time to relaunch the company and bring spaceflight simulation to the masses. Since then, he's been instrumental in growing Zero G's impact, forging partnerships, expanding operations across the country, and championing inclusion in space. Zero G now operates in cities like Houston, San Jose, New York, and even from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, offering public flights, corporate experiences, and research missions for institutions prepping for lunar missions. Check out GoZeroG.com to learn more, book a seat, or get updates on where the plane will fly next. (Use code “MAT10” to save 10% on your own weightless adventure.) Matt also highlights collaborators like Tim Bailey (the heart of Zero G), marketing pro Erin, and CEO Kevin Sproge, who brings military and Blue Origin astronaut training expertise to the team. And don't miss the mention of Jose Hernandez, NASA astronaut and subject of A Million Miles Away, who often joins flights to inspire the next generation. Send us a textFrogs. In. Space. Yep, you read that right! In this episode of Wildly Curious, Katy Reiss and Laura Fawks Lapole take you on a hilarious and mind-blowing journey into the weirdest space experiment you've probably never heard of—the Orbiting Frog Otolith mission.Back in the 1970s, NASA decided that launching two bullfrogs into orbit was a great idea. Why? To study how weightlessness affects the inner ear and balance. But the story doesn't stop there—these amphibian astronauts, named Pierre and Tinam, endured some wild conditions, from pressure changes to a rather unfortunate fate.Join us as we dive into the bizarre, laugh at the absurd, and uncover why frogs were chosen for space travel in the first place. If you love strange science, history's quirkiest experiments, or just want to hear about a frog named Pierre floating in space, this episode is for you!Want to see behind the scenes and unedited footage?!

Astronaut Frank Rubiales has returned to Earth after 371 days in space. It was only supposed to be 180, but a technical fault stopped him from returning as planned. Unlucky for him, but very lucky for scientists who want to see what effects spending an extended time in space has on the human body. Being in space can affect both physical and mental health. Weightlessness caused by a lack of gravity can lead to a loss of bone and muscle mass. Astronauts are recommended 150 minutes of exercise per day to counteract this. Also, space traveller's eyes can be affected by the way that fluids act in zero-gravity. Outside the protection of the Earth's atmosphere, astronauts are exposed to much higher levels and different forms of solar radiation. This can potentially cause long-term health problems, such as cancer. It's not just physical health that is affected by being in space. Our mental health can be damaged if we don't get enough sleep. On earth, our bodies respond through circadian rhythms to the Sun rising and setting to help us sleep, but astronauts on board the International Space Station see 16 sunsets and sunrises every day. This means that avoiding sleep deprivation is a challenge. Isolation, and spending all your time with a small group of people can also affect mental health. Along with isolation, is the pressure that comes from being constantly monitored by experts back on Earth. With possible future missions to Mars predicted to last three years, tensions within the crew could become heightened. Astronaut Harry Hartfield reports an example of this where a colleague threatened to open the airlock and drain the oxygen from the spacecraft. Developing new techniques and technology to support astronauts' health will enable more ambitious future missions. It can also help those of us who are staying on Earth. The Canadian Space Agency is using its expertise to improve health care for people living in remote regions. The technology that supports robots used in space is now being used in surgery in normal hospitals, while pressure suits are being used to treat post-pregnancy complications.

The symposium will include the premiere of the film, North of Never. Commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and generously supported by the Mellon Foundation, North of Never showcases seven people from the African diaspora experiencing weightlessness on a zero-gravity parabolic flight for over seven cumulative minutes. The film features video footage of the flight, along with interviews where the participants share their unique experiences. They discuss ideas of the chaotic nature of freedom, what it is to be lost in one's own body, and the collective phenomena of this moment. Artist Kambui Olujimi, and Vice President of Artistic Programming at Lincoln Center Jordana Leigh, will host a talkback following the premiere. “What happens when boundlessness is not an anomaly but the context of our existence?,” says Kambui Olujimi. #NorthStaratLincolnCenter
"Thor: Love and Thunder" is now out on DVD and Blu-ray and that makes this the perfect time to talk about the fourth entry in the "Thor" saga... or, as we put it, the second best "Thor" movie in the MCU. Thinking of it that way, it is both admirable and a disappointment and it's something we need to look at a little more closely.

Hello, friends! This month, we're gabbing about THEME PARKS, a subject Sarah and Bryn have a lot of experience with. Question 1: What was your favorite Theme Park experience as a kid, teen and adult? Kid Not Afraid: Bryn begins with the tale of the time her former fighter pilot father took her on her first upside-down roller coaster, the Corkscrew at Knott's Berry Farm in ‘80s Buena Park, California. Risk-taker: Sarah's also got a roller coaster memory for us: When it came to amusement park time for the Heitman family, the formula was Sarah and dad bonding on roller coasters, and her mom enjoying watching them from a bench with a nice coffee. Sarah's first experience was on The Rattler at Fiesta Texas, a wooden roller coaster. Teen Living in an ‘80s movie: Bryn takes us for a trip to a slightly alarming teenage memory of her 8th grade field trip to Disneyland, but redeems herself with tales of sultry summer nights at all-ages dance club Studio K at Knott's Berry Farm. Bryn didn't know this at the time of our recording, but found out that Studio K was located in the Fiesta Village esplanade where Jaguar! now stands. Sweet freedom: As a member of marching back from middle through high school, Sarah has plenty of band trips to various theme parks under her stylish belt. And she remembers this great sense of freedom, being unleashed at the parks without chaperones clinging tight: You're given your stipend of money to spend and a time to return to the bus. Have at it! She felt like flying. Biggest ride memory: Batman: The Ride for the first time. And the soundtrack theme was pumping through the line, it was at night, and it was very, very cool. Adult Moving to LA = Theme parks galore: Sarah discovered that when your new college friends have annual passes to Disneyland, you get an annual pass and become a regular. And she discovered that her favorite Knott's Berry Farm is actually Knott's Scary Farm. Moms and Kids and Solo Moms: Of course, one of Bryn's favorite things about theme parks has to be getting to take her kids there for the first time and watching their relationship with the parks evolve as they get older. An unexpected second discovery has been the joy of going to theme parks alone, which has been a gift to herself that has made a big impact on her. Extra: Bryn likes themed stuff: Clifton's Cafeterias, Old World, Madonna Inn Question 2: What do we want to learn about Theme Parks? Bryn dug into the difference between an amusement park and a theme park. This article from Theme Park Insider gives a good definition of a theme park. An amusement park generally is a large outdoor area with fairground rides, shows, refreshments, games of chance or skill, and other entertainments. American amusement parks came out of the idea of the “pleasure gardens” of Europe. A theme park is an amusement park that's organized and built around a particular theme or group of themes. Sarah brings us the 411 on roller coasters! History: Where did they come from? Engineering! How does a roller coaster work? Reading: Newton's first law of motion Extra credit: Weightlessness Extra credit: Weightlessness Question 3: What are you excited about regarding Theme Parks, especially now that they have reopened after a long period of closure? Sarah is super-digging how Disney California Adventure's new Avengers Campus is mirroring the Disney+ shows and changing up characters and interactions Bryn is looking forward to being more present when she's at the parks and appreciating the privilege of being there. And both of us are excited about getting dressed up in fun outfits/Disneybounds, and packing our bags with just the right stuff to optimize our day. Especially big scarves. BONUS Question: What's your favorite immersive Theme Park experience? Sarah relates her experience of walking into Be Our Guest, the Beauty and the Beast restaurant in New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom. It was literally walking IN TO the beauty and the beast film's ballroom. Bryn cheated and said the Exploratorium's Tactile Dome in San Francisco. We'll all have to forgive her. I am proud to call George a friend but most of all we are both from Rhode Island. Georges love for skateboarding sees no end and his amazing craftsmanship of using the old skateboard as a means of art and resources to make new skateboards is sustainable and inspiring. Iris Skateboards creates unique handmade one of a kind skateboards using recycled skateboards. We are based in San Francisco California where we skate to live and live to skate. Follow george: @iris_skateboards In 1980 a five-year-old George Rocha bombed the hill behind his grandparents' house in Pawtucket Rhode Island on a green plastic 70s-era cruiser salvaged from a yard sale. “All you could do was stand on it and go,” says George. “The perfect board to learn on.”Speed. Weightlessness. Freedom. Something clicked into place. He quickly graduated to a Veriflex Chaos, and soon after a hand-me-down Schmitt Stix Ripsaw—his first pro board. He tagged along with a pack of older kids, mastering his boneless, and skating around from parking lots to schoolyards. Back then, there were only a handful of tricks.Come junior high George plopped down his savings on a Vision Gator and then a Santa Cruz Rob Roskopp and then a SMA Natas. He remembers every board he ever rode. He loved all of them. Well, maybe not that Vision Gator. Something about that one wasn't quite right. One day after flipping through a Thrasher magazine, George began tinkering in his driveway, trying to replicate the terrain seen in those pages. Soon he had an array of launch ramps, boxes, and quarter pipes. There wasn't many other skateboarders around, but word got out, and soon kids from the next town over came to skate the Rocha driveway.Soon he was volunteering to help anywhere a backyard ramp, contest or skatepark was being built, and from there he built a career of nearly two decades crafting wood and concrete parks all over the country. “Too many to count,” he says. Among the gifts he has offered the skating world: Thrasher's Double Rock, the annual FTC pop-up in-store competition park, and a string of concrete gems during a dozen-year run with Breaking Ground Skateparks.George is a skater's skater. He has built his life around his passion for the sport and he knows he's fortunate to be able to fully pursue that elemental bliss he first felt as a 5 year old. “Ever since I fell in love with skateboarding, it's been on my mind,” says Rocha. “It still is today. I'm still that kid.”

Today's theme is about truth. Roger Cohen asks us to look inward at our complicity -- the media included -- when he laments our obsession to follow seductive, yet empty leaders down a primrose path. Truth no longer seems to have meaning in our social-media-driven democracy. Before assuming that Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists are to blame for our current condition, ask yourself whether leaders like our President Trump are the antithesis of our values or a reflection of them. The attorneys representing the Sandy Hook families who sued Alex Jones for repeatedly and falsely claiming the killings were staged, released the deposition to the public last week. It's funny how powerless and silly Jones looked when he could no longer control the narrative. Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
