Here Comes The Space Cow is more than just a new LP — it's the sound of four musicians overflowing with talent but also bound by something deeper. This group plays like they were born to find each other, blending jazz grooves with just the right dash of funk. It's tight, soulful, and polished in the way only seasoned artists can pull off. Roger Kunkel (in photo) stopped by the studio to give us a taste, spinning a few tracks and gracing us with a couple of mesmerizing live performances on guitar. It was pure magic. Roger Kunkel -- Guitar, vocals.   Stoo Odom --  Stand up bass, vocals.   Bart VanDer Zeuuw -- Drums.   Max Hart -- Hammond organ, pedal steel guitar. Roger spent his 20s touring and recording as the electric guitarist for Thin White Rope, a critically acclaimed Davis band that released five albums and played venues from CBGB to the Soviet Union to the Reading Festival. Though the group disbanded in 1992, their legacy endures, with The Guardian dubbing them cult heroes in 2015 and all five albums reissued in 2018. In the late '90s, Kunkel shifted gears, forming the jazz-surf-rock group Acme Rocket Quartet, which gained a following in the San Francisco Lounge scene. By the early 2000s, he stepped back from live performance to focus on family and study acoustic instruments like bluegrass guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. More recently, he has returned to performing with the retro country band Mike Blanchard and the Californios, released a solo acoustic album, and revived Acme Rocket Quartet.

Navigating Auto Recycling's Future with Profit Team's Mike Kunkel

The auto recycling landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation from what Mike Kunkel calls "our grandfather's industry" into a sophisticated business sector attracting mainstream financial players and consumer acceptance. This eye-opening conversation with one of the industry's most respected consultants reveals both the tremendous opportunities and significant challenges facing recyclers in 2023 and beyond.Kunkel's work with Profit Team peer groups offers a fascinating window into how successful recyclers approach business growth. These collaborative communities of 6-8 similarly-sized, non-competing yards share detailed financial and operational data, allowing for deep analysis that "climbs in the radiator and out the exhaust pipe of the business." The process isn't always comfortable—Kunkel notes participants need "thick skin" when their "baby is called ugly"—but the results speak for themselves, with businesses achieving breakthrough performance through structured accountability and shared wisdom. What makes auto recycling truly unique is its collaborative spirit. Where other industries guard trade secrets fiercely, recyclers openly exchange best practices, successful programs, and implementation strategies. Kunkel points to practices once deemed impossible by industry consultants that have now become standard operating procedure thanks to this collective knowledge sharing. For recyclers considering peer group participation, finding the right match based on business size, temperament, and operational focus proves crucial for meaningful improvement.Looking ahead to the URG Conference in Orlando (April 10-12), Kunkel anticipates record attendance as recyclers seek strategies for navigating what he predicts will be a more challenging post-pandemic environment. With specialized tracks for different operational roles and increased focus on self-service yard operations, the conference represents the industry's commitment to continuous evolution and improvement. As Kunkel puts it, "when you talk about member benefits, there's nothing more handy than providing the right information to the right people at the right time in the right format."Ready to take your recycling business to the next level? Register for the URG Conference by March 8th to secure early bird pricing and join hundreds of forward-thinking recyclers committed to industry excellence.

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) uses sound to produce vibrations that are applied directly to the body. During the vibroacoustic therapy process, a client lies on the specially designed mat or bed or sits in a chair that is embedded with speakers or transducers which transmit specific computer-generated frequencies into vibrations. Since the human body is over 70% water and since sound travels 5 times more efficiently through water than through air, sound frequency stimulation directly into the body is a highly efficient means for total body stimulation at a deep cellular level. The term Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) was coined in the 1980s by the Norwegian therapist and educator, Olav Skille. Research in Europe and throughout North America has shown that audio waves in the range of 30Hz-120Hz transmitted through the vibroacoustic device have a very positive effect on various systems of the bodyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

Halfway through the season, college football has been a whirlwind for local sports fans this season.  Some may still be basking in the glory of the Washington Huskies beating the Michigan Wolverines earlier this month. And the Cougars deserve a tip of the hat for successfully keeping the Pac-2 alive…. or maybe it's the PAC-6 now? The 6-PAC?  While fans of Washington schools are still wrapping their heads around conference moves and changes to who and where their teams play, the entire college sports world is adjusting to the new reality of how players get paid. In 2021 it became legal for athletes to make money off of their image. This is called "Name, Image, Likeness" – or NIL. And it's changed the ability of schools to recruit top talent, in part because of how much boosters are able to offer prospective players.  It's something Thilo Kunkel has thought a lot about. Kunkel is a professor in the school of sport, tourism, and hospitality management at Temple University. He joined Soundside to discuss the upsides and drawbacks of the new NIL system, and how teams, schools, and the NCAA can keep up with the rapidly growing influence of money on athletics.   Guests: Thilo Kunkel, professor in the school of sport, tourism, and hospitality management at Temple University.  Related Links:  How NIL money is paid to college athletes - Washington Post Is NIL a good thing or a bad thing? Send us a Text Message. Our latest Bonus Track features a great conversation with the legendary Leland Sklar and director Denny Tedesco regarding his film, The Immediate Family. That's right, someone finally made a movie about Lee Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel and Russ Kunkel. If you're a liner notes nerd, you know those names! Here's one example:Jackson Browne's Running on Empty album was one where the music fans got to be part of the process. Because it was recorded live on stage in concert -- and at other points along the touring trail, backstage, in hotel rooms and even on the tour bus - it was a unique and often chaotic experience for those involved in the recording. As Sklar told me, Running on Empty was unlike anything he had ever been a part of. While bands and artists are very used to the uncomfortable nature of playing new material in front of an audience that's just there to hear the hits, Running on Empty captured moments with Browne and the band where they were playing new songs that the audiences hadn't even had a chance to get on an album yet, because they hadn't been recorded. For Sklar, it was just one experience of many songs and albums that he's played on across the decades. While he's worked with countless names, there were a few that kept coming up -- guitarist Waddy Wachtel, guitarist Danny Kortchmar and drummer Russ Kunkel. The four became known as The Section, the '70s heir apparent to The Wrecking Crew of the '60s. Collectively and often together, they've played on thousands of albums. In more recent years, they've acquired a new moniker, one which fits well with their connection to the legendary albums they played on by Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Don Henley and many others -- The Immediate Family. Adding vocalist Steve Postell to their ranks, they've put out several albums. But it was Tedesco who decided to tell the story of the guys, through the words of their famous employers and associates. He's well-suited for the task, having put out a film about The Wrecking Crew, the group of session musicians that featured his father, guitarist Tommy Tedesco. He saw the natural throughline that connected that collective with what Kortchmar, Wachtel, Sklar and Kunkel continued with the Section. The Immediate Family is a fascinating journey, one which weaves together valuable history as recounted by those who were there. The film was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray and continues to screen nationally. You can find further details at immediatefamilyfilm.com.I loved chatting with Denny and Lee -- and it was exciting to hear some details from Denny about his next project, a movie about Wolfman Jack that's currently in process! Can't wait!P.S. I mention it during the episode, but here's a direct link to Leland's YouTube channel.Support the Show.

Innovation comes in many forms, and compliance professionals must be ready for and embrace it. Today, I visited with Matt Kunkel, CEO of LogicGate, and Nick Kathmann, CISO at LogicGate, to consider how a dynamic GRC can help drive efficiency, compliance, and profitability. With a background in business analysis and self-taught coding, Kunkel identified a need for a more comprehensive and user-friendly approach to governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) solutions, leading to the creation of Logic Gate. The platform was designed to meet businesses' evolving needs without requiring constant developer intervention, utilizing a flexible data model and advanced graph database technology for superior efficiency. Mike is joined by Dr. John Kunkel, Senior Economics Adviser at the United States Studies Centre. Dr. Kunkel has worked as an economist, speech writer, policy analyst, and adviser to government and industry executive and previously served as Chief of Staff to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. He has a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University and is the author of "America's Trade Policy Towards Japan: Demanding Results", a study of US-Japan trade relations from Reagan to Clinton.  The conversation begins by placing the Australian economy amid the shifting economic order of recent years. Mike and John note that the contemporary Australian debate has come late in adapting to these global economic changes, partially due to the country's large resource base and overall economic resilience and flexibility. They discuss the unique position of Australia's experience with globalization, which allowed it to avoid the worst of the domestic economic drawbacks that afflicted Europe and the United States. They then delve into the impact of ‘Bidenomics' and US industrial policy on the economic debate in Australia, assessing how Australia is looking at these more protectionist policies to understand both the wrinkles and opportunities they present. After a discussion of evolving global economic dynamics and what a new American trade agenda should look like, they conclude by discussing an upcoming economic security conference in Australia, which is targeted at interpreting different international economic security policies, and tracking how these are transitioning over time.

Wolfsburg, Juli 1984. Grand Prix 2023 Final Preview

We preview the upcoming Grand Prix Final in Beijing, China, December 7-10, 2023. We breakdown the action in the hotly contested Men's competition, the uncertainty in the Women's division, the fight for silver and bronze in the Pairs, and why the Ice Dance competition is such a wild card. After six Grand Prix qualifiers that included dozens of thrilling performances (as well as a fair amount of messiness), we're finally ready for the Grand Prix Final for 2023!  To say this competition is stacked would be an understatement — especially when looking at the Men's and Dance competitions. In this episode, we break down each discipline, pick each of our favorites for the podium, and even throw out a few “we wish they made it” honorable mentions. Men's Competition FINALISTS: Adam Siao Him Fa (FRA) — 30 pts / Gold at Grand Prix de France and Cup of Chine Ilia Malinin (USA) - 28 pts / Gold at Skate America and Silver at Grand Prix de France Kao Miura (JPN) - 28 pts / Silver at Skate Canada and Gold at Espoo Yuma Kagiama (JPN) - 26 pts / Bronze at Grand Prix de France and Gold at NHK Trophy Shoma Uno (JPN) - 26 pts / Silver at both Cup of China and Grand Prix de France Kevin Aymoz (FRA) - 24 pts / Silver at Skate America and Bronze at Espoo It's not an overstatement to say that this has the potential to be the best men's competition we've seen since the Beijing Olympics. The six men who qualified have all laid down stellar performances this season — each one showing growth when compared to previous seasons. It's certainly hard to pick a favorite here, but momentum seems to be with France's Adam Siao Him Fa. If we look purely at technical merit, it's hard to beat Ilia Malinin from the USA. Based on overall track record and all-around performance skills, reigning World Champion Shoma Uno of Japan should be a lock for the podium. However, ice is slippery and the other three men are all more than capable of earning a podium spot. Watch out for the resurgence of Japan's Yuma Kagiama, the power of Japan's Kao Miura, and the absolute artistic commitment of France's Kevin Aymoz. It's going to be a wild ride! Pairs Competition FINALISTS: Deanna Stellato Dudek and Maxime Dechamps  (CAN) - 30 pts / Gold at Skate Canada and Cup of China Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodi  (GER)- 30 pts / Gold at Espoo and NHK Trophy Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud  (CAN) - 28 pts / Silver at Skate America and Gold at Grand Prix de France Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii  (ITA) - 26 pts / Silver at both Grand Prix de France and Espoo Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini  (ITA) - 24 pts / Silver at Cup of China and Bronze at NHK Trophy Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko*  (HUN) - 24 pts / Silver at Skate Canada and Bronze at Bronze at Espoo *Replaced Hocke and Kunkel, who withdrew due to injury Of all of the disciplines, the pairs has the most clear-cut favorite. Canada's brilliant Deanna Stellato Dudek and Maxime Dechamps have come out swinging this season and given fans a team to be genuinely excited about. They are certainly not a lock to win, but the odds are definitely in their favor. Others to watch here are Germany's Hase and Volodin, fresh off of back-to-back Grand Prix wins and Canada's Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud, who have looked stronger at every competition. The two Italian teams, Conti and Macii and Ghilardi and Ambrosini, are nearly neck and neck this season — with Hungary's Paclova and Sviatchenko not far behind. All could definitely be in the mix for podium spots if others falter. Women's Competition FINALISTS: Kaori Sakamoto (JPN) - 30 pts /  Gold and both Skate Canada and Espoo Isabeau Levito (USA) - 28 pts /  Silver at Skate America and Gold at Grand Prix de France  Loena Hendrickx (BEL) - 26 pts / Gold at Skate America, Bronze at Cup of China Hana Yoshida (JPN) - 24 pts / 4th at Skate America, Gold at Cup of China Nina Pinzarrone (BEL) - 24pts  / Silver at Grand Prix de France and Bronze at NHK Trophy Rion Sumiyoshi (JPN) - 24 pts / Bronze at Grand Prix de France and Silver at Espoo Will this be the formal Grand Prix coronation of Queen Kaori? Only time will tell. Last year, Japan's Kaori Sakamoto went in as the favorite, but faltered. This year, we've seen a much more consistent and focused Kaori — which may give her the edge here. On her heels, Isabeau Levito from the U.S. and Loena Hendrickx of Belgium have had moments of brilliance already this season — though both have also faltered a bit more. Two more Japanese women, Hana Yoshida and Rion Sumiyoshi, both came on strong over the course of the Grand Prix and showed the promise that could make them contenders here. Also, the consistently improving Nina Pinzarrone from Belgium could be a spoiler! Dance Competition FINALISTS: Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier (CAN) - 30 pts / Gold at Skate Canada and Cup of China Madison Chock and Evan Bates (USA) - 30 pts / Gold at Skate America and Espoo Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri (ITA) - 28 pts / Gold at Grand Prix de France and Silver at NHK Trophy Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson (GBR) - 28 pts /  Silver at Skate Canada and Gold at NHK Trophy Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sorensen (CAN) - 26 pts / Silver at both Grand Prix de France and Espoo Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha (CAN) - 26 pts / Silver at both Skate America and Cup of China The Dance competition is usually the most likely to be predictable, but after Fear and Gibson's upset at NHK Trophy, everything seems a little more up in the air. The top score of the season has been from Canada's beloved Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier — however, their performance at Cup of China saw them nearly lose to another brilliant Canadian team, Lajoie and Lagha. Our reigning World Champions, Chock and Bates, have great material this season and have shown well at both of their Grand Prix assignments, but their free dance at Espoo wasn't as clean as they would like — so we don't yet know what their scoring potential with these programs could be. And then there are the two European rivals of Fear and Gibson from Great Britain and Guignard and Fabbri from Italy who just flipped in their expected standings at NHK Trophy. The Italians are reigning World medalists and extremely strong skaters, but is the momentum with the disco Brits now? Also, because that's not enough, you have the smoldering Canadians, Fournier Beaudry and Sorensen, who may not be favored for the podium but will certainly melt some hearts. And who knows this season — their Top Gun program could take flight here and move them back into the conversation. All in all, this competition looks to be a doozy — we can't wait to see what happens! Back in 2017, there was no DeFi as we know it today, yet MakerDAO were already envisioning and building towards what they thought to be a certainty. The backbone of DeFi is represented by stable coins, and MakerDAO quickly understood this: they set out to build a decentralised stable coin, $DAI (and its precursor $SAI). Being collateral-backed, the smart contract needs to know the value of that collateral, but any off-chain price data is not readily available on-chain. This is where oracles come in and provide data feeds on-chain. MakerDAO's internal oracle has been active since 2017 on Ethereum and has recently branched out, forming Chronicle. By using aggregated Schnorr signatures, Chronicle solves the problem of oracle cost-efficient scaling. We were joined by Niklas Kunkel, founder of Chronicle, to discuss the challenges and tradeoffs that oracles regularly face, and how Chronicle is solving them, continuing the ethos of early MakerDAO.Topics covered in this episode:Niklas' background and the early days of MakerDAOHow MakerDAO evolved over time and the adoption of DAIMakerDAO's core principlesWhy Chronicle branched out from MakerDAOOracle challenges & tradeoffsOracle validatorsBusiness model for oraclesProviding oracle services to different blockchainsSchnorr signaturesChronicle's supported chains and oracle offeringsReal-world assets (RWA) and credit delegationEpisode links: Niklas Kunkel on TwitterChronicle on TwitterMaker DAO on TwitterThis episode is hosted by Sebastien Couture & Felix Lutsch.
