In this episode of Redefining Family, host Jonathan Wilson welcomes Cenk Bulbul, who shares his journey from Turkey to the United States and his experience as a single father of two.Cenk's early life involved constant relocation due to his father's role as a general in the Turkish army. Despite humble beginnings, he and his siblings prioritized education. He attended a prestigious boarding school, studied industrial engineering, and earned a master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1994.Cenk's self-discovery journey was challenging, as being gay in Turkey meant facing significant societal discrimination. After completing his master's degree, he returned to Turkey but remained closeted, driven by a desire to have children, even considering a heterosexual relationship. Realizing he needed to live authentically, he moved to New York for a PhD in marketing at NYU. Six months after relocating, he came out to his advisor and went on his first date in 2002. His sister was a crucial support, helping him come out to their parents, who eventually accepted him.In 2016, Cenk began pursuing adoption but switched to surrogacy after setbacks. He connected with a surrogate through friends. And with the help of his surrogate and using donor eggs, he became a parent in 2019. Initially, Cenk didn't plan to have a second child but he realized he wanted to have a sibling for her first-born daughter and he had his second daughter in 2021 working with the same surrogate. As a proud single father of two, Cenk reflects on his journey, the challenges he faced, and the joy of building his family. Jonathan thanks Cenk for sharing his inspiring story and encourages listeners to subscribe to Redefining Family for more heartfelt stories. Tune in to hear Cenk Bulbul's incredible story of resilience and the pursuit of family.
This week, John went blonde and I attempted to play Candyland with Ben which went well...until it didn't. “Menage a Phyllis” (November 2, 1974) In the third-season episode “My Brother's Keeper,” Rhoda famously said the word “gay,” turning a plot about her association with Phyllis' brother on its head. Two seasons later, Phyllis shows up in another episode that discusses gay issues but weirdly doesn't say that word. Regardless, there's perhaps more to be made of the newsroom's opinions about what codes as gay, and Dan Steadman returns to discuss this and what we'll call the “Murray Slaughter problem.” Read Dead Buckley's 2018 piece “Queer Coding on the Mary Tyler Moore Show” Episodes referenced: Dan's previous episode, “Mike Seaver Actually Said the Word ‘Gay'” Our previous Mary Tyler Moore episode, “Mary and Rhoda Meet a Homo” Our episode “Phyllis Dates a Homo” Our episode “The Dream On Guy Has a Gay Dad”

l S15 EP2 l Jaimie sits down with Roberto Concepción to chat about his journey to solo parenthood as a gay dad through surrogacy. After his daughter's birth, he noticed a severe gap in representation for families like his, and so, in true badass style, he decided to change that. He wrote and self-published a children's book called "More Than a Crown" to show his daughter a family like hers in the pages. It's all about embracing different family setups and encouraging kids to shake up old-school expectations. Jaimie ropes in her non-queer bud, Shephathia, to help kick the episode and dive into the main theme. Together, they stress the importance of addressing "stigmatized" issues, such as Shephathia's experience with her child on the autism spectrum. The conversation highlights the need for diverse and inclusive storytelling and the normalization that occurs from empowering individuals and families from all walks of life. Subscribe to The Queer Family Podcast for more episodes that celebrate and normalize the diverse spectrum of family experiences within the LGBTQiA+ community.

Anyway, this week Steve and Gaz are joined by James, who runs Brit-pop Memories, a Twitter (sorry X, ffs) account and blog dedicated to the joys of the Brit-pop era. James has come on after taking exception to a recent article Steve wrote belittling a handful of Brit-pop artists, and so we've given him his right to reply, whilst also taking time to explore his love of the music of the time. We discuss divisive releases from The Charlatans, Oasis, Dodgy, Kula Shaker, Marion, McAlmont & Butler, The Seahorses, Ocean Colour Scene, Suede and Gay Dad to see if they've held up or are relics from a past best forgotten. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

The last two weeks, I visited my middle son Dave, his wife Meredith and my two grandsons Henry and Jack at their home in Dartmouth MA.Dave is a good sport. He agreed to be interviewed for my podcast. After we were finished, he told me that it was now my turn and that he was going to interview ME for a podcast episode!I was surprised at what I was feeling at first. I guess I was afraid of what he might ask. After all, he IS an attorney and he's be putting me on the stand, so to speak. LOL.But as I thought about it and mentioned to my friend and energy guru Mark Hollenstein, he encouraged me to do it. He thought it would be good for both of us.Before this interview, I had a little time to reflect and one of the things thatI realized was that I knew virtually nothing about my own father (or his father). What a gift it would have been to have been able to sit my own "Pop" down and ask him a bunch of questions. So we did the interview. I kind of figured that it would be a gift to each of us.I had no idea what Dave would ask me. There were some interesting questions and I'm pretty sure that he got some interesting answers. Like: "Whoa. No, I did not know that grandma used to be an underwear model before she met your Dad and then she became a radio preacher"!It's a light-hearted interview with a lot of interesting questions. I appreciate the time Dave took in preparing to participate.Listen in to our bantering, interspersed with some great dialogue. An Interview with my middle son: Dave Wilkinson. We chat about his journey from each of our perspectives, his family, his business and his perspective when I came out to him as a gay man in 1999.In this episode, I interview one of my favorite people in this world: my son David. Two people can experience the exact same event and yet they can have two different perspectives on what happened. So we discuss what I saw as an amazing turnabout in his life from a very average high school student, to his life now as an attorney with multiple law offices on both coasts. He talks about his current life as a married man and dad and we share some memories of his life growing up. Lastly, we discuss what it was like for him when I came out as a gay man in 1999. I hope you enjoy this rather personal look into my life as a father to this amazing man.Photo: Copyright Wilkinson/2022Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.comNOTE: THIS IS AN INTERVIEW FROM MID 2022 WHEN MY PODCAST WAS NEW AND I DIDN'T HAVE MANY FOLLOWERS. In this episode we welcome pop poacher-turned-gamekeeper (turned rockademic) Cliff Jones to RBP's Hammersmith HQ and invite him to talk about his shape-shifting career in music — as well as about Paul Simon and doomed Rolling Stone Brian Jones (no relation). Barney starts things off with his memories of Cliff coming into the MOJO office circa 1994-5, plus we hear about long-form pieces our guest wrote about Peter Green and (for The Face) the Fugees. We also discuss Johnny Cigarettes' 1999 NME interview with Gay Dad, the band Cliff formed in the wake of Britpop. Nick Broomfield's new BBC documentary about Brian Jones prompts conversation about the self-destructive blues obsessive who was sidelined by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards — and ditched by Anita Pallenberg — after which we turn our attention to the rather different Paul Simon. Clips from Tony Scherman's 1993 audio interview with the other half of Art Garfunkel are jumping-off points for our collective thoughts on the New Yorker's career from his Brill Building days to the Hearts and Bones album and beyond. We pay heartfelt tribute to our guest's fellow RBP contributor Pete Silverton, who passed away on May 18th, and recall his crucial early Sounds interviews with the Clash, the Sex Pistols and other punk bands. Among the new library additions discussed, finally, are pieces about Flamingo Club owner Rik Gunnell (1966), Mick Hucknall's Frantic Elevators (1982), hip hop heroes the Jungle Brothers (1989) ... and, from 2007, Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse. Please note this episode was recorded before we learned of the passing of former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke. Pieces discussed: Talk Talk talk tech, The Fugees, Gay Dad, Brian Jones by Dawn James, Brian Jones by Greil Marcus, Brian Jones by Carol Clerk, Paul Simon audio, Hearts and Bones, Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, Rik Gunnell, Average White Band, Danielle Dax, The Jungle Brothers, Frantic Elevators, Dave Matthews, Erykah Badu and Lily Allen/Amy Winehouse.

Learn more about NOLA Papa and by "The Secret Mermaid Revue" at : https://nolapapa.com/In Eriks Own Words:My name is Erik Alexander and my husband and I are from New Orleans, Louisiana. We have two independently assertive daughters and an eager baby boy trying to keep up with his sisters. We strongly feel that as an LGBTQ family, especially in the south, it's important for us and others like us to help light the way for the ones that need hope. We live in an incredibly divisive time and right now visibility is critical to help destigmatize and normalize same-sex families. We love our children just as any other straight family does, if not more than some.Just like them, we would do anything on Earth for our babies. We do that every single day, regardless if we are two dads.It is my mission to broaden the one-sided view of the stereotypical American family. We too are living the American dream. We are the new normal, a loving family that teaches our children acceptance of all walks of life and the importance of being kind to one another. Our place in this world is earned, not owed.My hope is that through my blog, Nolapapa.com, I am able to bury my insecurities, my fears, and my failures- for all to read, in hopes to see my weaknesses sprout and transform into self-improvement, and resilience, and embrace an unapologetic renewal. My past helped make me who I am today- but who I am tomorrow depends on how I choose to get there, today.

In this episode, I interview one of my favorite people in this world: my son David. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

Work. Finished a couple jobs. Meeting went ok. Was on a ‘bad albums' kick - Second Coming, Squeeze, Gay Dad, etc. Interesting. Didn't eat all day until after 5. Bloody nose. Mosquito bites are all over me and itchy as hell. Went for a beach swim (fourth consecutive day). Water was warm as hell. Had the beach to myself. I should get a buoy and a waterproof pouch so I can bring my phone and valuables out to where I'm wading. Got a bit zen out there today. Went for a ride. Had a bath with lots of dettol - for the bloody mosquito bites. Discovered and listened to too much Seeing Red podcast. Feeling a bit spooked. Feeling jumpy anyway because I've missed my meds for a couple of days. Need to get back in some good routines. M: 5. E: 5.
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Laura Hall, Author of “Affliction: Growing Up with a Closeted Gay Dad”About Harvey's guest:Laura Hall was born in a small city on the San Francisco peninsula to a straight mother and a gay father who lived in the shadows. She grew up in the post–World War II era of hopeful optimism and entered her teenage years during the rebellious sixties.Laura's father, it turned out, also longed to rebel, although social constriction prevented him from doing so. By the time he came out to her in 1975, she was a twice-divorced, twenty-four-year-old single mother struggling to make sense of how her “perfect” family of origin could have sheltered so many secrets.Another three decades would pass before Laura would exam her own infidelities, multiple partners, night terrors, and fear of abandonment in light of the double life her father led throughout his sixty-five-year marriage to her mother. Affliction is a tender and frank account of how a father's secret became his daughter's inheritance and, ultimately, the path to her own healing. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://www.facebook.com/laura.hall.1297/http://mydadscloset.com/#LauraHall #Affliction #harveybrownstoneinterviews
On this episode I'm speaking to a man who has been a constant throughout my entire existence as a music fan. Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rival Schools – for over thrity years, Walter Schreifels has made music that I've both loved, and that has helped shape the way I've seen the world and how I've existed within it. Now in the third chapter of their existence, the New York groups excellent fourth album, Distant Populations, is out now on Epitaph. I hope you enjoy this big old slab of conversation - primarily about Quicksand, but there's a bunch of stuff in there about Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools and - um - Gay Dad too!The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production.
