In this episode, we discuss:Eradicating shame & stigmaA strengths-based approach to recoveryReimagining the 12-StepsWorkaholismEmbracing individualized pathways & patchworksAddiction in the familyThe "accidental" SHE RECOVERS movementThe power of communityDawn Nickel, PhD – or “Mama Dawn” as she is affectionately known in the women's recovery space, is passionate about redefining recovery, ending the shame and stigma around it, and ensuring that women are supported to find and follow individualized pathways and patchworks of recovery. A survivor of intimate partner violence and cancer and with over 35 years of recovery from substance use, Nickel currently identifies as being in active recovery from workaholism and the patriarchy. In her professional role as a health policy researcher and consultant, Nickel focuses on how best to support women who experience substance use disorders, mental health issues and related life issues. She and her daughter Taryn Strong (also in recovery from substance use and various life challenges) “accidentally” started a worldwide women's recovery movement called She Recovers when they started a Facebook page of that name in 2011. Since then, literally hundreds of thousands of women have been introduced to the She Recovers philosophy, approach and community. Nickel's firm belief that recovery is a daily practice, coupled with her commitment to paying her recovery forward, inspired her to write this book. Sometimes if you're lucky someone reaches out to you in the early days when you're first trying to stop drinking and shows you how to take the first steps. And for me, that person was Dawn Nickel.  8 years ago, when I first thought that I needed to stop drinking and decided to try life without wine, Dawn reached out to me.  I was traveling with my son and husband from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia for a long weekend, my first in 5 years where I wasn't going to drink, and Dawn picked me up for coffee, drove me to a beautiful beach and we talked all about drinking and not drinking and where I was and what I wanted and what I was afraid of.   She's amazing. And she's also a pretty big deal.  Today on the podcast I was thrilled to interview her and talk about women and the way we recover, from all things and in all ways.  I hope you love the conversation as much as I did.  Dr. Dawn Nickel is a respected thought leader in the women's recovery sphere and (along with her daughter Taryn Strong) the founder of SHE RECOVERS Foundation, a not-for-profit grassroots organization that inspires hope, reduces stigma, and empowers women in or seeking recovery for substance use and/or mental health challenges.  Dawn is a strong advocate for the view that every woman in or seeking recovery must be supported to find the tools and pathways that will work best for her as an individual. Hello Holistic Helper… I am Cybele and I am a SHE RECOVERS Coach I help sober women work through their mom guilt from past drinking, stay sober while living with someone who still drinks, and rediscover their inner child. Today, I would like to help you reconnect to your true self by guiding you through a loving inner child reconnection exercise. Beverly has provided me with some questions to answer, all in support of you taking good care of yourself while you do great work into the world. Thank you for being here… When I was 7 years sober, I went on a SHERECOVERS retreat on a beautiful farm in Canada. There, I participated in twice daily trauma informed yoga led by the magical Taryn Strong, cofounder of SHERECOVERS. I was on my mat, doing breath of joy, when a ten year old me appeared. I could feel her energetic presence standing in front of me, facing me, and she was angry. I was quite surprised to see her and curious as well. What did this mean? Why was she so angry? Within a week's time, a good friend reached out and asked me if I, along with a third friend, wanted to start inner child work. This is how things unfolded. As I became curious, the universe provided. I knew in my heart that it was time to start doing Inner Child work. There are many wonderful guided meditations, books, and videos on inner child work. I started by reading what is called The 14 Traits of an Adult Child, also known as The Laundry List, from Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional families, which is a 12 step organization. I also follow the work of Dr. Nicole Lepera, also known as the holistic psychologist. She has educational videos on youtube and other resources that explore Inner Child healing work. I would like to invite you to practice an inner child exercise now. If it feels safe, find a comfortable place to sit, you may want to place your feet on the ground or lay down somewhere comfortably. I invite you to place your hands gently on your cheeks. If it feels safe, you may close your eyes. And just repeat these affirmations in your mind or out loud. All your feelings are valid. I will always listen to you. You're allowed to slow down. I will always protect you. You are allowed to be you. I will keep you safe. You're allowed to be playful. I adore you. You're allowed to make mistakes. I will never, ever leave you. You're allowed to change. I won't abandon you. Contact Info... wideawakerecovery@gmail.com Instagram @wideawakerecovery https://www.wideawakerecovery.com/ Cybele (M.Ed, CPC, CPRC, SRCD) will support you as you move forward into a life of radical self-acceptance, self-love, and self-compassion. odaatchat.com Soberlifeschool.com   I love this episode already, because we ran through a “recovery checklist” of sorts that I’m going to have to use in future episodes. It was totally an inspired thought! Felt kinda magical if I’m honest…   Anyway, I have a little story to share with you. So years ago, when I first got sober I was in that emotional place where I had tried all my best ideas to fix my own life, cuz it was a total disaster, but nothing was improving.    I was completely broken heartbroken because my boyfriend and I had just broken up, I had a ton of bills and no money, and all my friends were fed up.    But as “luck” would have it, (and when I say luck, i’m using air quotes) I met a woman who pulled me aside and offered to work with me. I was so desperate for change, I did everything she told me to do, which was A LOT.    But things started to shift, my life started to evolve in ways I never could have imagined. I found peace, relief, and such profound purpose that has given my life such rich meaning, it’s kinda hard to put into words. I was hooked!   Over the last 25 years since that experience, I’ve been obsessed with workshops and exercises that identify the blocks to healing. So that’s what I want to share with you, if you’re ready for it.   It’s a transformational program that starts with a 3 month plan so that you can build a foundation for your own life.   Want to know why I finally decided to take the plunge myself? Other than being completely frustrated? I read this quote by Albert Einstein “A problem can’t be solved with the mind that created it.” For me, that was it and I’m so grateful I did because my life today is unrecognizable from where I started. I’ve been married for over 22 years, sober for 25, I’m debt free except for my house, and I feel really good about who I am today.   If you’re ready to find out more, visit odaatchat.com and look for the butterfly on the right!   So back to today’s episode, Taryn and her mom Dawn Nickel, who was also a previous guest, are the founders of SheRecovers, an absolutely incredible resource for women in recovery. They offer online meetings, retreats, and a huge community of over 270K women, all focused on recovery. And today Taryn is going to share her story and how she recovers. So with that, I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

Building a Supportive Community for Women in Recovery with Taryn Strong Recovery, whether from a physical, spiritual, emotional, or mental injury, is never easy. It requires a lot of internal work that can take a toll on our overall well-being. Because of this, the role our community and environment play in our recovery process is just as important as the efforts we put ourselves. A supportive circle can make all the difference in the world and can be our best hope as we go on this path of recovery. In this episode of Radically Loved Radio, we have the incredible Taryn Strong as our guest to share her personal journey of healing and recovery. She also shares with us her experiences in using her platform to build a community for people who are in similar situations. Check out the podcast highlights below. Be sure to subscribe and tune in for all the details! About Our Guest Taryn Strong is the co-founder of She Recovers, a yoga program that aims to incorporate yoga and meditation with recovery. She is a rising influencer for women who, like her, are recovering from multiple things. Taryn herself is proud of bouncing back from eating disorders, drug addiction, and even self-harming. Now, she dedicates most of her time to building a safe community for women in recovery. The Path to Recovery and Enlightenment The Cycle of Addiction and Recovery Taryn recovered from multiple struggles such as self-harm, eating disorders, codependency, and even self-esteem issues. At 16, she suffered from substance use disorder as well. Recovering from rock bottom is one of the most transformative moments of her life. She had thought she’s done with recovery until she was reintroduced to her vices. Her lowest point was when she wasn’t in alignment with herself and not living her truest self. Some time in between, Taryn and her mom started the She Recovers yoga program while Taryn was still under the influence. It was only after fully acknowledging her unhealthy ways that Taryn finally started the journey to recovery. Her mom is also recovering from workaholism, anxiety, depression, cancer, and domestic abuse. Their different approaches to recovery are what helps them both. Women in Recovery and Understanding Yourself Everyone is recovering from something. Not everyone suffers from the same thing. What matters is you are doing your best, and you are in a supportive community. It’s essential to make the spiritual and emotional connection between your struggles and what you feel. Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process. When you begin to understand yourself and your needs, that’s the time you can ask for the help and support you need. One of She Recovers’ main guiding principles is that people need support to find the patchworks and pathways to recovery. Making the Connection Between Yoga and Recovery Taryn has been a dancer for most of her life, and she realized that movement is therapeutic for her. When she finally listened to this connection, she explored and fell in love with yoga. The Concept of Permission and What Recovery Path Works for You Give yourself permission to know your modality. Surround yourself with supportive people who understand your mode of recovery. There is no single template for recovery. We shouldn’t feel like there’s a “system,” and that if we aren’t part of it, then we aren’t recovering. Unsupportive environments require you to be dogmatic and evangelical about their methods. Listen to your voice and intuition. People’s healing will be different, and their personal journey is a way of honoring themselves as well. Women always have to ask permission to do things. It gives off a feeling of guilt and a constant wanting to do something to resist. For Taryn, her recovery wasn’t only from her substance abuse and eating disorders, among others. It was also recovery from patriarchy. Building a Supportive Community for Recovery Growing apart is normal for relationships. Choose quantity over quality. Stick to people who you know will genuinely and strongly support you, no matter how few they may be. Taryn’s broader community just came by organically. These are people who she hasn’t met yet in real life, but has supported her over the years. There is a heart and soul connection, even when you have not personally met some people. You’ll know when every time you talk or interact with them, you just feel better. Three Main Foundations of Building a Support Group First, stay open-minded and open-hearted. Try not to get too fixated on one idea or one opportunity. Second, believe that you are worthy of love, recovery, and healing. Third, trust yourself. 5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode “What I was losing was myself, and I was completely out of alignment with myself and not in integrity. And that was the worst imaginable feeling for me—not being in alignment and not living my truest self..” (Taryn) “Everybody is recovering from something.” (Taryn) “When we can get to a place where we understand who we are and what we need for ourselves, we can then be able to get to a place where we can ask for help and get the support that we need from the people that we need it [from].” (Rosie) “I see it every day; when we give women support and permission to recover in their own way, they do recover, and it's different for everyone. I mean, all of our experiences are different, so it just makes sense that our healing journeys are going to be different as well.” (Taryn) “When you start living your truth, whatever your truth is, or when you do start this path of healing, you just find each other.” (Taryn) Resources She Recovers Podcast with Taryn Strong You can connect with Taryn through her Instagram. Taryn Strong is an amazing soul, bursting with life and positive energy. A firm member of the badass brigade, she advocates for multiple pathways of recovery for women. Her energy is contagious and is a source of solace and hope for women across the globe. As a recovery advocate, she hosts events all over the world specifically dedicated to creating a space for women to recover. Taryn is grateful to be in recovery from drug addiction, self harm, disordered eating and codependency. Taryn was raised by recovering parents (Dawn is her mom) so recovery has been a part of her everyday life for a long time. She completed her 300 hour yoga teaching training program in her home town of Victoria, British Columbia in 2007 after falling in love with yogic philosophies and the power of transformation through the mind/body/spirit connection. Taryn received her “Yoga of Recovery” certification at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm and her “Yoga for Trauma” certification in 2014. She has since developed a unique “Yoga for Recovery” program which integrates yoga and meditation with spirituality and recovery principles from a wide variety of recovery pathways (including but not limited to the 12 step pathway). In addition to teaching yoga classes across Victoria and leading the Yoga for Recovery program for She Recovers Retreats, Taryn's latest role is as the creator and artisan of She Recovers Malas. Taryn also talks about the importance of yoga and community in her journey to well-being and how she incorporates those philosophies into the foundation on which her company is built, for now and into their bright future. Taryn Strong was sitting atop the largest resource for women in recovery and keeping a secret: namely that in between hosting retreats in places like Bali, where she and her mom Dawn Nickel were getting women to open up about their recovery, she was doing coke. She'd been honest about her past up until then—about self-harm, about co-dependency, about a drug phase when she was younger—but coming clean about the fact that she was also an addict required a new level of bravery. In this episode, Taryn talks about the SheRecovers brand—the retreats they host, the malas they sell, the coaches the certify—and so much more. NOTE: This episode is from a Facebook Live interview that we did, which means that the audio isn't as sharp as it is on regular episodes. Please bear with that! And please tune into my regular Facebook Live interviews, which take place at 4 pm PST on Tuesdays (unless I have a conflict, in which case I reschedule but announce the change on my page. Taryn's parents entered into recovery when she was a youngster, so she spent her childhood playing in church basements during their meetings and knew the language of recovery inside out. Later she applied her heart for recovery as a trauma-informed teacher of Yoga for Recovery and led SheRecovers retreats together with her mom Dawn. Yet still she found herself awakening to her own need for healing and turned to bravely face her inner demons with the same honest aproach she offered to others.
