If you are very lucky you'll connect with someone further along in sobriety who takes the time to show you the way. For me that person was Dawn Nickel, the founder of She Recovers, long before it had grown into the powerful recovery movement it is today.  Ten years ago, when I was 20 days alcohol-free for the first time, I shared in a group that I was nervous about going to Victoria BC for a long weekend with my husband and 5 year old son. I couldn't imagine going out to dinner and being on vacation and not drinking.  Dawn saw my post and reached out to me. She invited me to coffee in Victoria, picked me up at my hotel and took me to a beautiful beach to talk. Since that day she's been a touchstone on my alcohol-free journey.  For full shownotes and to access resources mentioned in the episode, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/163 How I can help you drink less + live more Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women.  My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life. A survivor of intimate partner violence and cancer and with over 35 years of recovery from substance use, Nickel currently identifies as being in active recovery from workaholism and the patriarchy. In her professional role as a health policy researcher and consultant, Nickel focuses on how best to support women who experience substance use disorders, mental health issues and related life issues. She and her daughter Taryn Strong (also in recovery from substance use and various life challenges) “accidentally” started a worldwide women's recovery movement called She Recovers when they started a Facebook page of that name in 2011. Sometimes if you're lucky someone reaches out to you in the early days when you're first trying to stop drinking and shows you how to take the first steps. And for me, that person was Dawn Nickel.  8 years ago, when I first thought that I needed to stop drinking and decided to try life without wine, Dawn reached out to me.  I was traveling with my son and husband from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia for a long weekend, my first in 5 years where I wasn't going to drink, and Dawn picked me up for coffee, drove me to a beautiful beach and we talked all about drinking and not drinking and where I was and what I wanted and what I was afraid of.   She's amazing. And she's also a pretty big deal.  Today on the podcast I was thrilled to interview her and talk about women and the way we recover, from all things and in all ways.  I hope you love the conversation as much as I did.  Dr. Dawn Nickel is a respected thought leader in the women's recovery sphere and (along with her daughter Taryn Strong) the founder of SHE RECOVERS Foundation, a not-for-profit grassroots organization that inspires hope, reduces stigma, and empowers women in or seeking recovery for substance use and/or mental health challenges.  Dawn is a strong advocate for the view that every woman in or seeking recovery must be supported to find the tools and pathways that will work best for her as an individual. A lot of workplaces use alcohol as social glue. When Lisa Smith started out as a lawyer in the '90s she spent multiple late nights out drinking with colleagues. But the pressures of work had her drinking at home too, and by the time she was in her thirties she was an alcoholic. In this show we look at women's relationship with alcohol as it intersects with the workplace. By being at the bar Lisa got career opportunities she wouldn't have if she'd stayed at her desk. Today she works with law firms on changing their cultures so that alcohol plays less of a central role in people's careers, and to end the stigma around addiction in the legal profession. We also meet Dawn Nickel of She Recovers to talk about the issues women face in seeking treatment for substance use, and how the pandemic has affected women in recovery. Dawn knew she had a drug problem at 17 years old because she had only been using drugs for a few years and had already experienced several overdoses. One of the Guiding Principles of She Recovers is the idea that all women are recovering from something. Along with being in recovery from addiction, Dawn is also in recovery from domestic violence, anxiety, grief, trauma, and cancer. Dawn got clean in a 12 Step program, but understands that might not be the best fit for all women. odaatchat.com Soberlifeschool.com   I love this episode already, because we ran through a “recovery checklist” of sorts that I’m going to have to use in future episodes. It was totally an inspired thought! Felt kinda magical if I’m honest…   Anyway, I have a little story to share with you. So years ago, when I first got sober I was in that emotional place where I had tried all my best ideas to fix my own life, cuz it was a total disaster, but nothing was improving.    I was completely broken heartbroken because my boyfriend and I had just broken up, I had a ton of bills and no money, and all my friends were fed up.    But as “luck” would have it, (and when I say luck, i’m using air quotes) I met a woman who pulled me aside and offered to work with me. I was so desperate for change, I did everything she told me to do, which was A LOT.    But things started to shift, my life started to evolve in ways I never could have imagined. I found peace, relief, and such profound purpose that has given my life such rich meaning, it’s kinda hard to put into words. I was hooked!   Over the last 25 years since that experience, I’ve been obsessed with workshops and exercises that identify the blocks to healing. So that’s what I want to share with you, if you’re ready for it.   It’s a transformational program that starts with a 3 month plan so that you can build a foundation for your own life.   Want to know why I finally decided to take the plunge myself? Other than being completely frustrated? I read this quote by Albert Einstein “A problem can’t be solved with the mind that created it.” For me, that was it and I’m so grateful I did because my life today is unrecognizable from where I started. I’ve been married for over 22 years, sober for 25, I’m debt free except for my house, and I feel really good about who I am today.   If you’re ready to find out more, visit odaatchat.com and look for the butterfly on the right!   So back to today’s episode, Taryn and her mom Dawn Nickel, who was also a previous guest, are the founders of SheRecovers, an absolutely incredible resource for women in recovery. They offer online meetings, retreats, and a huge community of over 270K women, all focused on recovery. And today Taryn is going to share her story and how she recovers. So with that, I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

Taryn Strong was sitting atop the largest resource for women in recovery and keeping a secret: namely that in between hosting retreats in places like Bali, where she and her mom Dawn Nickel were getting women to open up about their recovery, she was doing coke. She'd been honest about her past up until then—about self-harm, about co-dependency, about a drug phase when she was younger—but coming clean about the fact that she was also an addict required a new level of bravery. In this episode, Taryn talks about the SheRecovers brand—the retreats they host, the malas they sell, the coaches the certify—and so much more. Dawn Nickel is a legend in the recovery world. The womab behind SheRecovers, Nickel was in recovery a long time and a self-proclaimed workaholic looking for a change when she realized, while sitting on the beach in Mexico, that what she really wanted to do: help people in recovery. And so she launched a Facebook page. Despite being something of a social media novice, the page took off—attracting hundreds of thousands of Likes as it established itself as the place for women in recovery (from anything) to gather together for inspiration and connection. Now SheRecovers is a business which includes retreats, events and coaching. In this episode, Nickel and I discuss how she was able to corner the market on women recovering, whether or not the word "addict' is stigmatizing and how she makes sure she doesn't sway back into workaholism (hint: it has to do with going on the SheRecovers retreats). It's Dawn! In this week's episode, the girls talk to the true mama bear of the recovery world and half of She Recovers, one of the largest women's online recovery communities in existence today. Dawn is in long-terms substance recovery (from all of 'em, as she says) but she also faced another bottom with workaholism that brought her to an equally dark, if not darker place. She talks to the girls about what that looked like, battling cancer, and her view on recovery decades in.
