The Essential Oil Revolution –– Aromatherapy, DIY, and Healthy Living w/ Samantha Lee Wright
We all have become so aware of the importance of smell the past few years. Especially during the pandemic when many people lost it. On this week's episode, Hana Tisserand, COO, cofounder and director of operations and communications of the Tisserand Institute joins The Essential Oil Revolution. This week, Hana offers her science based and practical wisdom on essential oils; specifically surrounding that of olfactory retraining. What You Will Learn: 1. The history of the Tisserand Institute and why it transformed from in-person integrative practitioner training in aromatherapy to online holistic training in essential oils. 2. How Hana's unique background influenced her to be an expert in essential oils. This includes her growing up in the Czech Republic, where integrative, conventional, and natural approaches co-exist in pharmacies side-by-side and what led her to meet Robert Tisserand. 3. The importance of smell as a chemosensory experience. For example, it alerts us to danger, influences our taste, stimulates memory, and determines how we interact with the world on a sensory and hedonistic basis. 4. What component found in essential oils are the most communicated “language” in the world. These molecules are shared by every creature on the planet, from single-celled organisms to mammals. 5. How essential oils constituents can still impact our biochemistry and physiology, even if you lose your ability to smell. 6. The concept of olfactory training and how it works. 7. Why specific essential oils or the constituents found within them, phenylethanol (rosy), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptus), citronellal (lemony) and eugenol (clove), are used in smell training. We also discuss if essential oils are more powerful than the single constituents based on their multiple effects. 6. Why olfactory training works the best for those with infections and an intact, functioning trigeminal nerve. 7. Why the aim of the Tisserand Institute is to provide education and information that is accurate, safe, and accessible to all essential oil users vs. preparing one for aromatherapist certification. 8. One thing Hana does for self-care daily. (Hint it has to do with her love of aromas and hot beverages.) 9. The one things Hana feels we should ditch and replace with instead to be healthier. 10. Hana's favorite essential oils hack: Using cotton balls/cotton pads for inhalation. It is super easy, quick, portable, safe, and accessible. Bio of Hana Tisserand Hana Tisserand is the COO, cofounder, and director of operations and communications of the Tisserand Institute, the global leader in online evidence-based essential oils education. Hana has been working at the Tisserand Institute since 2014 and she oversees the creation of its course content and curricula, moderates live webinars, supervises the staff, and teaches her own introductory classes. She also writes the Tisserand Institute newsletters, her own blog posts, and detailed scientific articles. Hana has a unique perspective on how information about essential oils is sourced, processed, and communicated, stemming from her past experiences. She is a sought-after presenter for various prestigious aromatherapy events, including the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy). Being raised in a family of doctors and nurses gave Hana an underlying interest in the workings of the human body, which previously manifested in her specialization in medical translation. Her love for science, essential oils, perfumes, and fragrances runs deep, as does her appreciation for fine teas and coffee. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, Frauke sits down with aromatherapy pioneer and author Robert Tisserand to reflect on 50 years of Aromatherapy. Robert takes us through his life's journey growing up in London, incl. his studies and original career ambitions (you might be surprised!). He shares what got him interested in essential oils, how he ended up writing that now famous book The Art of Aromatherapy, and reveals what Aromatherapy was like in the UK back in the 1970's (spoiler alert: it's nothing like it is today). Robert and Frauke also have an honest discussion about what Aromatherapy is today, what's changed over the years, and what people get really wrong about the field. They discuss the controversial topic of naturals vs. synthetics, debate the quality of essential oils nowadays, as well as share how they create a fragrance. Robert also shares what he feels is the most interesting research being done on essential oils today. This is a candid and heartwarming conversation that you don't want to miss. Do you follow the moon cycle or chart your own menstrual cycle each month? I didn't know how powerful and effective it can be when we plan our work and personal activities in conjunction with the cycle. For example, there are days in the month that our body needs to slow down and take extra rest, which means the perfect time to reflect and recharge. Then, there are days we feel more creative or energetic and we want to get more done. It makes total sense for me to plan accordingly, but of course, we can't always dictate our business schedule but it is important to become more aware. Let me tell you why. If we know our cycle better, then we will have a more realistic expectation of our energy levels and give ourselves permission to push when we have a full tank or pull back when the best we can do is to slow down. This is about being strategic and wise. May I just say it is true feminine wisdom at play. I think this is a really good self-care practice and a smarter way to look at productivity. So this week, I have an interview with Sharon Wood to share with you. We discussed the four phases of our cycle, how our hormones change and how to better look after our body, regardless of our age and where we are with our cycles. I met Sharon through Perfect Potion, my favourite shop for aromatherapy and natural skincare products. We both sold our books through Perfect Potion and we crossed path many times as at masterclasses and festivals. Finally, I get a chance to interview her and discuss Goddess Wisdom in my podcast. Sharon Wood is the Founder and Director of Emgoddess - an entity that is created to help and educate young women to understand and manage their menstrual cycles. Sharon holds qualifications in holistic aromatherapy from The Tisserand Institute of London, combined with multiple certifications in Herbalism, Natural Fertility Management and Specialised Aromatherapy, Sharon has also worked as an Aromatherapist, including teaching aromatherapy at the Reflexology Academy of Brisbane and the International College of Holistic Aromatherapy. Interview Highlights Women cycle of life: We hardly talk about our menstrual cycle at school and the language around it tends to be rather negative. The intention here is to create a more empowering and positive message around our cycle. By understanding our cycles, it can be very empowering for women There are four phases for each cycle and the goddesses that are chosen in Sharon's book Emgoddess represent that and reflect the energy of each phase. First, we have the follicular phase, then ovulation, luteal and lastly the menstrual phase. The four goddesses representing the phases are Daphne, Demeter, Persephone and Hecate in that order. Our hormones changes as we go through each phase and it brings an impact to our energy levels and how we feel emotionally. Daphne - our follicular phase is all about energy, and she's independent, focused, confident and with high energy. It's a great time to start a project or set a new goal. Demeter - the earth mother, represents our ovulation and it is all about love and compassion. The high amounts of estrogen in your body make you very capable, and you are able to get a lot done during this phase. Persephone - the luteal phase, which is the pre-menstrual phase. It got a bit of a bad reputation. Pre-menstrual make seems moody, feisty, cranky. And the truth is that we can be all those things, but it also is a really strong, passionate and creative phase. Hecate - the menstrual phase, it is a more inward reflective and intuitive phase. It's time to sit back and think about how the month has gone. It's important to get more rest during this time. Even if someone doesn’t cycle e.g. pregnant, nursing, peri-menopausal, it is still highly beneficial to chart the month by using the moon phases. For hormone balancing, clary sage and geranium essential oils are great for a bath or diffuser.
Heard of Essential Oils but not sure how to put them into practice? We sat down with Hana Tisserand of the Tisserand Institute to learn the nuts and bolts of what Essential Oils can do for you, and how they can help you heal. Episode Recap: Interview with Hana - 3:04s, “You Want Me To Do What??” section - 45:32s Highlights: Essential Oils are plant material that is distilled and concentrated into a liquid form Main benefits of Essential Oils with good research backing them are lavender for reducing anxiety, peppermint for irritable bowel syndrome and anti-itch treatment, and tea tree oil for helping with acne and fungal infections If a claim sounds too good to be true, it usually is - sometimes Essential Oils just smell nice and there’s benefit in that in and of itself Hana’s top three pieces of advice? Don’t go crazy - start with 3-5 Essential Oils and see what they do for you. Good options to try are lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus (orange), and pick one other one just for fun Try inhalation of Essential Oils first; this is the safest way to consume them If you really want to dive into the Essential Oils world, buy one of the books recommended by the Tisserand Institute to understand the ins and outs before moving beyond inhalation When buying Essential Oils from anywhere, transparency is key and typically a reputable company will tell you 1) actual botanic names on the bottle 2) country of origin and 3) how it was distilled (probably on their website) If purchasing from a retailer, check the sell through date on the bottle, as shelf life can be an issue. Also, never rely on the testers for the smell, as this is not a great way to preserve the oil. For a fun way to experiment with Essential Oils, try Shanna’s suggestion of using a diffuser and picking oils to mix together. Shanna’s favorite? Cinnamon, Clove & Orange for a holiday scent! ‘Robert Tisserand has just joined our Facebook group’, Lorraine messaged me excitedly. ‘The Robert Tisserand?’ I replied. ‘YES, THE Robert Tisserand’. This was an exciting moment for us at Formula Botanica. As organic cosmetic formulators, Robert Tisserand’s seminal work on essential oil safety had been a staple resource for Formula Botanica for years and his research into essential oils are highly regarded and respected within our wider community. Last year Lorraine and I were able to arrange a meeting with Robert in London and we kept a steady dialogue flowing since then. When he agreed to be a guest on the podcast we were thrilled and we were determined to make the most out of this opportunity and share it with as many of you as possible. Robert Tisserand is an expert in aromatherapy and essential oil research. In this podcast you will learn: Why essential oil safety is an issue and why he decided to write his book ‘Essential Oil Safety’ back in 1995. Some of the issues with the EU guidelines and what the current research on essential oils shows in terms of allergens in citrus oils and why his safety guidance differs. Some examples of why safety guidelines are necessary and why essential oil safety is still such an important topic and worthy of our attention. The benefits of using essential oils in cosmetic formulation. Key takeaways: Get Robert’s opinion on the recent lavender and tea tree oil controversy where recent research suggested that both oils were hormone disruptors. Why you should research essential oils carefully when using them in skincare or haircare formulations and why some research can be considered scare-mongering. Why legislation continues to be a challenge, why it is likely that it will increase in the coming years and how this relates to safety. To help people make informed decisions about essential oil usage, The Tisserand Institute has launched a six-part, certified Essential Oil Safety Masterclass with Robert Tisserand. Follow the link to register. Registration is only open until the 12th of April so make sure you act quickly to take advantage of this great course.
