With the stench of rebellion hanging around the tearooms of SW1 after ministers announced fresh welfare cuts, this week host Patrick Baker explores the backbench revolts of years past, asking how disobedient MPs really plan and plot against their own parties. Veteran Tory MP David Davis describes how he and other rebels defeated David Cameron's plans to bomb Syria almost by accident — and offers tips on shutting down confrontational government enforcers, or chief whips. Christopher Howarth, a secretive member of the European Research Group of Eurosceptic Tory MPs, was instrumental in defeating Theresa May's EU deal during the Brexit wars. He describes countering the cunning tactics of a Downing Street operation desperately trying to quell rebellions, and how he spotted a loophole in Tory rules that led to May's resignation. POLITICO senior political correspondent Annabelle Dickson has been gauging the mood among angry would-be Labour rebels — and hearing why some are feeling disillusioned with the direction of their party. One of those certain to rebel in a Commons vote on welfare is the Labour MP for Alloa and Grangemouth in Scotland, Brian Leishman, who explains why he's appalled at the cuts to benefits. But rebels beware: Tony Blair's former no-nonsense chief whip Hilary Armstrong recalls threatening badly behaved MPs with being sent to work on obscure infrastructure committees unless they toed the line. But she insists the best way to deal with rebels — who Blair called his "little darlings" — is a "softly, softly" approach. And Blair's former political secretary John McTernan, sets out why he believes the huge new intake of Labour MPs might be more prone to rebellion and says the current rancor poses a bigger question for the party. Keir Starmer has promised to introduce legislation to parliament – before this April's anniversary of the Hillsborough football stadium disaster – that would extend a statutory duty of candour to public authorities and officials. Starmer hopes that the new Hillsborough law, which will require government organisations and officials to be truthful and to proactively co-operate with investigations and inquiries, will “address the unacceptable defensive culture prevalent across too much of the public sector” exposed in the Infected Blood, Post Office Horizon and too many other inquiries. But how widely will the duty be applied? How can it work alongside other statutory duties such as in the civil service code? What lessons can be taken from the legal duty of candour that has existed, with mixed effect, in the NHS for over 10 years? To discuss these outstanding questions about the scope and remit of the proposed legislation, and explore how this new duty of candour could help embed a culture of transparency from SW1 to the frontline, we were joined by an expert panel: Sir Robert Francis KC, Interim Chair of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority Liz Gardiner, CEO of Protect Pete Weatherby KC, Director of Hillsborough Law Now Campaign The event was chaired by Alex Thomas, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.

For years, Westminster has been addicted to Twitter (now called X). Host Sascha O'Sullivan looks at how the site – and SW1's reliance on it – has changed since tech billionaire Elon Musk took over. Sascha talks to Charlie Peters, journalist at GB News, whose story about grooming gangs was amplified by Musk before going on to dominate Britain's news cycle for a fortnight. She compares how the same story was covered originally by freelance journalist Julie Bindel, who exposed the extent of the grooming gangs in 2007, in a world before social media was so prevalent. Labour MP Emily Thornberry and chair of the foreign affairs select committee reflects on going viral for the wrong reasons and subsequently resigning in 2014. She explains how politicians' use of social media has changed since then, subject to algorithms that favour right-wing content. And Sascha takes a deep dive into how Nigel Farage has harnessed the power of going viral for decades – all the way back to his days as an MEP. She speaks to his former comms chief Gawain Towler and social media journalist Sophia Smith Galer – and asks whether the left needs to raise its game when it comes to mastering social media. For centuries, Westminster has been dominated by politicians who attended some of the most prestigious schools in the country. This week on Westminster Insider, host Sascha O'Sullivan finds out whether public schools still dominate or if state educated Rachel Reeves and Bridget Phillipson's move to tax fees reflects the end of the era of Etonians. Sascha visits Eton College and takes a tour around the art school and the theater, hears from an old boy about the kind of education children receive there — and discovers why our prime ministers are far more likely to have been attended this school than any other. Former Labour adviser and old Etonian Patrick Hennessey tells Sascha the confidence a school such as his alma mater instills can easily slip into arrogance. FT journalist and author Simon Kuper explains why privately educated politicians have always tended to banded together in Westminster — and how that can leave those that attended less prestigious institutions out in the cold. Keir Starmer's former adviser Donjeta Miftari describes coming to work in SW1 as a former comprehensive pupil and immediately noticing the networks which the independent sector fosters beyond the school itself. Former David Blunkett adviser Conor Ryan recalls the fights with private school heads when the Blair government axed the state-funded assisted places scheme. Sam Freedman, education expert and former adviser to Michael Gove, explains how the former education's secretary's background informed his attitude to education reform. And Sascha travelled to Brentwood, a private school in Essex, where headteacher Michael Bond tells her Reeves' decision to put VAT on private schools was "punishing" them unfairly, as the private sector was making strides towards making fee-paying schools less exclusive. This week on Westminster Insider, host Sascha O'Sullivan lifts on the curtain on the best political lunches — who to invite, where to go, and what to talk about. She speaks to Vivek Singh, owner of the Cinnamon Club, a SW1 culinary institution, about the two decades of drama and intrigue he's witnessed over his famous lamb shanks. Singh tells Sascha about the best tables — where you can see everyone but no one can see you — and how Gordon Brown was partial to a spot of grouse. Former Labour MP and member of Tony Blair's government Siôn Simon explains why the classic lobby lunch between journalists and politicians is actually "underlyingly stressful" and Sun on Sunday Political Editor Kate Ferguson tells Sascha how to warm up an MP to get them to spill the beans. Sascha speaks with Freddie Sayers, CEO of Unherd, which owns the Old Queen Street Cafe — a new favorite haunt of politicos of all stripes. Former political correspondent turned restaurant critic Charlotte Ivers tells Sascha why politicians have terrible taste in food. And the FT's Henry Mance recalls settling in for a port or three after lunch with Nigel Farage. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Host Sascha O'Sullivan meets a few of the new parliamentarians slowly figuring out their way through Westminster. New Labour MPs — and soon-to-be office buddies — Jake Richards and Chris Curtis give Sascha rundown of their whirlwind first few days in SW1 and a taste of their plans to make a difference in parliament. Lola McEvoy, newly elected Labour MP for Darlington, re-lives the nerves of giving her maiden speech directly after Reform Leader Nigel Farage. She explains the challenges of very quickly having to get on top of an inbox with thousands of emails from constituents — before she'd even had a chance to hire staff. As if being a new MP wasn't challenging enough, Sascha talks to Sarah Sackman, the representative for Finchley and Golders Green and newly-minted solicitor general, on how to find your way around parliament with a ministerial red box. Another fresh face, Andrew Snowden, Conservative MP for Fylde, tells Sascha about being courted by senior Tories as they jostle for the upper hand in the leadership contest. And new Lib Dem MP Bobby Dean attempts to answer the thorny question of "what's the point of the Liberal Democrats" now they have their highest ever number of seats in parliament. 29P Schwassmann-Wachmann: A Rosetta Stone for Amorphous Water Ice and CO CO2 Conversion in Centaurs and Comets? by C. M. Lisse et al. on Tuesday 20 September Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) is a highly active object orbiting in the transitional Gateway region (Sarid et al. 2019) between the Centaur and Jupiter Family Comet regions. SW1 is unique among the Centaurs in that it experiences quasi-regular major outbursts and produces CO emission continuously; however, the source of the CO is unclear. We argue that due to its very large size (approx. 32 km radius), SW1 is likely still responding, via amorphous water ice (AWI) conversion to crystalline water ice (CWI), to the rapid change in its external thermal environment produced by its dynamical migration from the Kuiper belt to the Gateway Region at the inner edge of the Centaur region at 6 au. It is this conversion process that is the source of the abundant CO and dust released from the object during its quiescent and outburst phases. If correct, these arguments have a number of important predictions testable via remote sensing and in situ spacecraft characterization, including: the quick release on Myr timescales of CO from AWI conversion for any few km-scale scattered disk KBO transiting into the inner system; that to date SW1 has only converted between 50 to 65% of its nuclear AWI to CWI; that volume changes upon AWI conversion could have caused subsidence and cave-ins, but not significant mass wasting or crater loss on SW1; that SW1s coma should contain abundant amounts of CWI CO2-rich icy dust particles; and that when SW1 transits into the inner system within the next 10,000 years, it will be a very different kind of JFC comet. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.09136v1

House Guest by Country & Town House | Interior Designer Interviews
Today's House Guest is the guru of interiors - Nina Campbell. Nina was my very first podcast victim and has graciously agreed to chat again to celebrate 50 years in the business. Having started with John Fowler at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, 'I considered myself lucky to be carrying his bags', she says, Nina went on to work for Mark Birley on the interiors of Annabel's members' club. They teamed up to open a shop on the Pimlico Road, SW1. Nina explains: 'Eventually Mark got bored, but I continued and moved to Walton Street, SW3. I was a bit tired of interior design at that point but, one day, Anne Heseltine walked into the shop and asked if I could decorate her and Michael's new house on Chapel Street, SW1. It turned out to be a house in which I had lived as a child. I've always been guided by these sorts of things – interference from the Almighty, so to speak. Interior design is a bossy business and if you're that way inclined and someone asks you to help, you say, ‘Yes.' Tune in to hear about what Nina has been up to recently and her top tips on decorating a beautiful home.

As the Prime Minister has a stay of execution after the pork pie plot came to nothing, today allegations are flying that Tory whips have been using unsavoury methods to threaten wavering MPs into line. Christian Wakeford, the newly defected Labour MP to Bury South, says that whips threatened to withdraw funding from a local school; while William Wragg claims that MPs have been blackmailed with information about their private lives. But how much of this is true, and how much, as some in SW1 are saying today, is this just a part of being a whip? On the podcast, James Forsyth points out how some of this comes down to 'the fact that some of the new intake of Tory MPs have been quite shocked at how aggressive the "flush-out" tactics have been', when it comes to using newspaper headlines to publicly name rebels (for example the pork pie-ers earlier this week). Meanwhile, Katy Balls tells Isabel Hardman that this will be a troubling development if more revelations come up: 'Any piece of news that can fit into the general narrative of Boris under pressure on party-gate and... give it a fresh lease of life, is a problem'.
In this week's episode, host Steve Anglesey breaks down for listeners what constitutes a party, being at work and a work party, if, like the prime minister, listeners often get them muddled up. Award-winning journalist James Ball joins the podcast to discuss how this week's scandal has been different from the ones Boris Johnson has usually ridden out and how Keir Starmer has stepped up to the plate in light of it. They then go on to discuss the most influential address you've never heard of - 55 Tufton Street, SW1. It's the home of pro-Brexit groups and climate change sceptics, but just how much power does it have over the government? Plus, Ann Widdecombe, Nigel Fagare and Kriss Akabusi are all in the Hall of Shame this week. Enjoyed this episode? Let us know by tweeting @TheNewEuropean.

Des bisous Partagez si ça vous plaît (ou *te* plaît), bisous, Arthur et Noé. his week on The Critic podcast we spoke to John Whittingdale MP, 24 hours before he was made a Minister of State in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. But while he was critical of the current “regressive” method of collection, John Whittingdale made clear to us that he believes there is no credible alternative except being funded from general taxation – an idea he is not fond of because of the increase in power it might give to the state. Also on the podcast this week we spoke to writer Alexander Larman on the recent Academy Awards: giving his verdict on whether the Oscars are going to stay woke – a subject he has written about here – and Graham caught up with Adam Dant on a pub crawl of SW1 for some serious tavern-based research on the division bells of Westminster. This word is a kind of prequel to the SW1 teaching on Kingship this month. We go back to the time when the law was given to Moses and what that the people did with that.

Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. Westminster’s Brexit crisis continues to deepen and the mood on all sides in SW1 continues to darken. Which is why this week on Free Exchange my colleague John Ashmore and I decided to cheer ourselves up by talking to Matt Forde. Matt is one of Britain’s leading political comedians. He hosts 'Unspun' on Dave and his podcast ‘The Political Party’ features interviews with some of the most interesting people in politics. We spoke to Matt about his time as a political adviser, whether it’s getting harder to make jokes about politics as the debate gets nastier and why he’s fallen out of love with the Labour party.Tickets are available now for his new show, 'Brexit Through the Gift Shop' at the Bloomsbury Theatre on May 25. CapX Editor Oliver Wiseman speaks to Henry Newman, Director of Open Europe and one of the most eagle-eyed Brexit watchers in SW1, to try and make sense of the latest developments. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rish and Marshal make their pitches for spin-off fan fiction for the Star Wars universe. Are their ideas any good? You be the judge. To download, right-click here and then click SaveFact checker:In coming up with my ideas, I wanted to include at least one pitch that mocked the worst clichés in bad fan fiction. The worst fan fiction that I am aware of devolves into pornography, so I included a pitch that was the worst form of that.Looking back, I added it mostly to shock Rish because he knows me and how far out of character that material is coming from me. However, instead of leaving it as a private joke between the two of us, I went ahead and included it in our recording. I’ve always had reservations about including it, and tried to add a bunch of language to explain how I wasn’t serious, but I still left it in.Since it has aired, I have often considered editing the episode to exclude it, but figured I was just being a chicken and not trusting the audience to catch the intended humor. But, I would think to myself, “The podcast is public. What if this is the first episode that someone listens to? They wouldn’t know me. They wouldn’t have listened to all of my Journey Into… backlog of episodes. Their first impression of me would be providing some rude, possibly offensive content.” But still, I let it stand out of a fear of being wimpy. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was Disney’s firing of James Gunn for illicit tweets that he had made 10 years ago. I’m not going to comment on the rightness or wrongness of Disney’s decision except to say that we as a people will be judged by history according to the messages we have sent out into the world, especially in the digital landscape. Those messages may often be experienced out of context and without knowledge of or searches for apologies, future personal growth, or changes of viewpoint. I don’t want to be judged according to any messages of poor taste that I have allowed to be released into the world, or messages that may be of offense or hurtful to others. Thus, my decision to edit about 1 min. 45 secs. of audio out of this episode.Relavant Links:Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina anthologyTo comment on this, journey on over to the ForumsOR leave us a voicemail at 77-JINTO-107 (775-4686-107).
Episode 21Season 2 of Graphic Novel Explorers Club is here! Join Frances, Dennis, and Johnny as they review Gotham by Gaslight, as written by Brian Augustyn and illustrated by Mike Mignola. This episode was recorded live at Crocker Art Museum's Crocker-Con. In this episode of Graphic Novel Explorers Club the gang discusses the ties between Gotham by Gaslight and Star Trek: The Original Series; the proper terminology for a group of bats; why even Sigmund Freud could not fix Bruce Wayne; which one of the gang should not speak into a microphone at public events; why Victorian-era Gotham was using the “@” for posting before social media was even a thing; discovering a new way to spoil a comic book's plot twist; how tragedy always falls on Marlon Wayans, SW1, and the rest of the Wayans; why we need to bring “Brigand” back; will comic books being published 100 years from now ever feature contemporary people like Ted Kazinsky and Jeffrey Dahmer as the nemesis to the hero; and if comic book characters are trapped in hell.Thank you for listening to Graphic Novel Explorers Club. Please share your opinions and thoughts on Twitter, Facebook, or at GNExplorersClub@gmail.com (we would love to hear your suggestions for Season 2 of the show). The caps and cuts on housing benefit have polarised the nation more than any other measure in Britain's age of austerity. Public anger about people "milking the system" by using benefits to get large homes in central London is pitted against the spectre of "Kosovo-style social cleansing" of Britain's cities. In The Report, Mukul Devichand investigates how the changes will really play out in the lives of Londoners: telling stories of the city where the cut will bite first. Around 1.5 million Britons get all or part of their rent paid by the state, costing £8bn a year. In fashionable Maida Vale and central SW1, Mukul visits the homes paid for by "Local Housing Allowance" that cost taxpayers tens of thousands of pounds each year. He asks if the government is right to blame landlords for inflating their rents. Will London's communities really be changed forever by these changes? In Stamford Hill in Hackney, Mukul meets the Haredi Jewish community. It is a tight-knit quarter of 70 orthodox Jewish synagogues where many families qualify for housing benefit because they have several children. Could this historic community now be compelled to move? Lord (David) Freud is a Minister in the coalition government and one of the architects of these reforms. He fields difficult questions about the government's plans to rein in rising welfare costs. And at the fringes of London, in Barking and Dagenham, Mukul asks where the poorest will move if they are hit by the changes. In a district already convulsed by deep-seated rivalries over housing - which have in the past led to racial tension and the success of the far right British National Party (BNP) at the ballot box - Mukul discovers that there are now fears of heightened tension as people trickle out of central London.
The Baby Boomer Radio, TV, Movies, Magazines, Music, Comics, Fads, Toys, Fun, and More Show!
What are all of those different bands that were found on old radios, and even on newer radios? What does MB, SW1, or LW mean? Smitty talks about the what the different bands, or wavelengths on old sets were. He also talks about what could be heard on these bands at one time or another. How do these signals travel so far? That question is answered on this show. As an aside, Mike brings up the topic of political broadcasts, and how short waves were used also for political purposes all around the world. In "Subways are for Sleeping", Ian rose speaks about movies having to do with Subways in their subject matter. He presents a fascinating view of subways; how they work and the different plots in movies that have been about subways. He also recalls his earlier years riding on them. Mike talks about favorite DJs from the past. Where are they now? How can you find out what happened to your favorite DJ? Mike lets us know about DJ location services, and getting air ]checks of your favorite jock on-line. Plus a great Maxwell House Coffee Retro-Commercial on this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site.
