“We're moving at a snail's pace compared to what's available out there. These kids are going to change the world if we let them. Or, they won't because we stopped them.” “I think that the biggest issue in science it's our inability to share our stories.” Serena has dedicated her life to advancing science and science education while working with the nation's most promising youth. Dr. Serena McCalla was raised in New York City and fell in love with science as an elementary school student. She earned her bachelor's degree, as a double major, in Biological Science and African American & African Studies from the State University of New York at Binghamton University with intentions to become an ER physician. However, she quickly realized she was more inspired by research than medicine. To satisfy her craving for deeper scientific understandings, Dr. Serena McCalla earned an MS degree in Hematology/Microbiology, a Ph.D. that explored the use of diagnostic tests to improve the comprehension of genetics, photosynthesis, and respiration in secondary and collegiate Courses. Dr. McCalla's teaching experience began shortly after earning her bachelor's degree. In the classroom, her appreciation for the sciences became more profound as the students exposed her to nuances of various scientific disciplines including material science, nanotechnology, computer science, computational biology, and physics. Using her growing knowledge of science fields outside of her degrees, Dr. McCalla founded the iResearch Corporation while working as the Science Research Coordinator for Jericho UFSD, Jericho, NY.  The iResearch Corporation is the parent company of iResearch Foundation, iResearch Institute, iResearch Academy, and iResearch Science. These companies help Dr. McCalla share her research practices with educators and students from around the globe. The iResearch Foundation supports underrepresented and underprivileged students' participation in the iResearch Institute and iResearch Academy. These programs promote science research method training and review of fundamental and advanced sciences by conducting laboratory experimentation and data science/bioinformatics data analysis and research to test novel hypotheses. Additionally, the iResearch Institute and iResearch Academy review the scientific method and research method practices through its international programs. The scientific training of these students encourages them to a) systematically address the use of the scientific method during the completion of projects, b) complete novel experimentation, and c) promote expertise in presenting and writing journal-worthy papers. Secondarily, Dr. McCalla is the Science Research Coordinator for Jericho Union Free School District (UFSD) and designed her curriculum to foster excellence in scientific research.  The Jericho UFSD program has become one of the preeminent science research programs in the United States. Under Dr. McCalla's tutelage, the school district is lauded annually for its exemplary performance in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Regeneron (formally Intel) Science Talent Search (STS) competitions producing over 80 scholars and 15 National finalists. The iResearch Corporation parallels the environment Dr. McCalla built at Jericho High School and UFSD, the culture of her classroom and lab brings forth copious avenues to help students excel in science, math, bioinformatics, data science, and engineering research. She enjoys that each day provides a new opportunity to encourage students to explore and impact the future of science and society. A natural competitor, Dr. Serena McCalla is not only a science research enthusiast and professional; she also considers herself a science geek and competition supporter. She is the President of the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF; 2014 - present) because she believes in promoting students' academic excellence and encouraging accompanied recognition in science. Her most pivotal goal is to foster student learning and research to extend past successes in their universities and ultimately manifest themselves in the global arena. Dr. McCalla believes these works will propel this generation of students to improve life on this planet as we know it. Dr. McCalla has earned numerous awards for teaching and mentoring. Awards she has received include the U.S. Presidential Scholar Program Teacher Recognition Award (2023, 2017, & 2010), the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Harvard Club of Long Island (2016 & 2012), the Teacher of Merit Award earned annually from Regeneron/Intel Science Talent Search (2023 - 2010), received an honorary minor planet (named Serena McCalla) from MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force funded Outstanding Teacher Award in association with the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). Dr. McCalla's students have won virtually all STEM competitions that are publicly accessible regionally, nationally, and internationally. To conclude, Dr. McCalla had the unique experience of participating as a principal subject in the National Geographic documentary Science Fair. The immensely likable film chronicles the importance of science fairs in the high school learning experience. The documentary highlights the trials, tribulations, and successes of the Jericho High School students in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The documentary was selected for and premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and was honored by winning the festival's first-ever overall Festival Favorite Award. The documentary also earned additional awards, including an Academy Emmy Award. Dr. McCalla is again a principal character in the upcoming National Geographic TV/Disney+ docuseries released on December 10, 2023, called Science Fair: the Series. Dr. McCalla has also participated in speaking engagements, commercials, and panels for Disney+, National Geographic, and XSTEM. She is also a newly named National Geographic Explorer, receiving the Wayfinder Award in 2023. The Wayfinder Grant supported the design of a new science research competition entitled “The Lost Einsteins”. Dr. McCalla hopes to continue to bolster the brilliance and determination of future scientists. In addition, she encourages her students to follow her quote- “if you dream it, complete the work to make your dream reality”. McCalla aspires to support all students to make a difference by discovering something new within themselves and the world. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Find your passion. Share your story. Moon Rocks Collected In 1972 Reveal New SecretsIt's hard to imagine, but the moon we all know and love hasn't always been in the sky. Like all of us, the moon has an age. Until recently, our lunar neighbor has been estimated to be about 4 billion years old.But new research on lunar crystals from the Apollo 17 mission has helped researchers pinpoint a more specific age for the moon—and it's about 40 million years older than previously thought. That difference may sound like a drop in the bucket given the time scales, but lead study author Dr. Jennika Greer says this is a big deal, because it tells us more about what the solar system was like in its earlier years. Greer, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, joins guest host Flora Lichtman to talk about her methods and why the early universe was so fascinating. The Science Behind Your Unraveling SweatersIt's sweater season once again, but you may have noticed that some of your newer sweaters aren't standing the test of time. Perhaps they are pilling, unraveling, or losing their shape. But if you look at sweaters from the ‘80s or ‘90s, they may still look brand new. Last month, an article by Amanda Mull in the Atlantic about declining sweater quality made the rounds online, and we wanted to know more. What, scientifically, went wrong in sweaters? And why are sweaters so bad now?Guest host Flora Lichtman unravels the science of sweaters with Dr. Imran Islam, knit expert and assistant professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. They chat about the fibers that make up sweaters, what physics has to do with how long they last, and what to look for when purchasing knitwear. To stay updated on all things science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. We all have become so aware of the importance of smell the past few years. Especially during the pandemic when many people lost it. On this week's episode, Hana Tisserand, COO, cofounder and director of operations and communications of the Tisserand Institute joins The Essential Oil Revolution. This week, Hana offers her science based and practical wisdom on essential oils; specifically surrounding that of olfactory retraining. What You Will Learn: 1. The history of the Tisserand Institute and why it transformed from in-person integrative practitioner training in aromatherapy to online holistic training in essential oils.  2. How Hana's unique background influenced her to be an expert in essential oils. This includes her growing up in the Czech Republic, where integrative, conventional, and natural approaches co-exist in pharmacies side-by-side and what led her to meet Robert Tisserand. 3. The importance of smell as a chemosensory experience. For example, it alerts us to danger, influences our taste, stimulates memory, and determines how we interact with the world on a sensory and hedonistic basis.  4. What component found in essential oils are the most communicated “language” in the world. These molecules are shared by every creature on the planet, from single-celled organisms to mammals.  5. How essential oils constituents can still impact our biochemistry and physiology, even if you lose your ability to smell. 6. The concept of olfactory training and how it works. 7. Why specific essential oils or the constituents found within them, phenylethanol (rosy), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptus), citronellal (lemony) and eugenol (clove), are used in smell training. We also discuss if essential oils are more powerful than the single constituents based on their multiple effects. 6. Why olfactory training works the best for those with infections and an intact, functioning trigeminal nerve. 7. Why the aim of the Tisserand Institute is to provide education and information that is accurate, safe, and accessible to all essential oil users vs. preparing one for aromatherapist certification. 8. One thing Hana does for self-care daily. (Hint it has to do with her love of aromas and hot beverages.) 9. The one things Hana feels we should ditch and replace with instead to be healthier.  10. Hana's favorite essential oils hack: Using cotton balls/cotton pads for inhalation. It is super easy, quick, portable, safe, and accessible. Bio of Hana Tisserand Hana Tisserand is the COO, cofounder, and director of operations and communications of the Tisserand Institute, the global leader in online evidence-based essential oils education. Hana has been working at the Tisserand Institute since 2014 and she oversees the creation of its course content and curricula, moderates live webinars, supervises the staff, and teaches her own introductory classes. She also writes the Tisserand Institute newsletters, her own blog posts, and detailed scientific articles.  Hana has a unique perspective on how information about essential oils is sourced, processed, and communicated, stemming from her past experiences. She is a sought-after presenter for various prestigious aromatherapy events, including the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy). Being raised in a family of doctors and nurses gave Hana an underlying interest in the workings of the human body, which previously manifested in her specialization in medical translation. Her love for science, essential oils, perfumes, and fragrances runs deep, as does her appreciation for fine teas and coffee.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sima sits down with Melanie Courtright, CEO of Insights Association, to discuss the rapidly changing scene and the diligent work that Melanie’s team is doing in providing additional resources and perspectives on how to deal with the fallout of the Corona Virus and its impact to the industry. Melanie began serving as CEO of the Insights Association on January 1, 2020. Previously Melanie served as Executive Vice President, Research Science & Data Strategy at Dynata. A respected, passionate voice on market research trends, standards and quality, Melanie has participated in many industry organizations, events and initiatives. She serves on the executive board of the University of Georgia’s MRII Education program and is an active member of Women in Research (WIRe). Previously Melanie served as President of IA’s Southwest Chapter and as a U.S. representative to ESOMAR. Insights Association’s Call-to-Action There are times when the industry goes through rapid change, of course, and that rapid change is usually due to technology disruption or a new methodology that enters the space, but this particular disruption is totally unplanned and one that we’re facing as a nation. Melanie has observed that in normal times we would ordinarily see healthy competition all around us, but this crisis has pulled the industry together as a community. She has been seeing giveaways of all sorts of free services, software, and licenses. Conversely, when attending some of Insights Association’s Town Halls, you’ll hear fears being expressed by people regarding the viability of their businesses, their jobs and the people that they support. Insights Association’s primary purpose is twofold: to put as much information and resources into the hands of the industry and to advocate as hard as they can into the Administration and government on behalf of the industry. Virtual Town Halls - Information and Resources Each Friday, Insights Association holds a virtual Town Hall with speakers outside of the industry to talk to our industry to discuss topics such as crisis leadership, economics and economics forecasting, financial resources, and how consumer sentiment is shifting. Although the webinars utilize speakers outside of the industry, speakers inside the industry take the time to leverage the meetings with their industry perspectives. Insights Association is also generating as much content as possible into a written format. They’re doing research on research and measuring the impact through the industry. They are also measuring what the corporate buyers believe their future in research looks like and much, much more. Advocation on Behalf of the Industry Melanie explains that they are currently working on a letter to the Administration regarding the large number of small businesses, the large number of independent contractors and the industry’s self-employed sector. They’re reminding the Administration of the size of the research as pertains to the United States specifically, the importance of research as an industry to the government, to the voice of the population and to polling, and the tremendous value that we, as an industry, deliver. Insights Association is encouraging the Administration to remember the insights industry and to not let the industry die out. They will be copying the letter and giving it out to its members so they can sign it, as well. Melanie provides an overview of additional matters for which they advocate. _______________ Email me your thoughts! Part 2! While the word, "evangelical," may come across as a bad word in many western circles, nobody can deny that the evangelical movement has been a powerful force within the United States on many levels throughout the years. On episode 74 of the Brew Theology Podcast, Dr. David Buschart, associate dean and professor of theology and historical studies at Denver Seminary, speaks about Evangelicals and Evangelicalism: “Who are ‘Evangelicals’ and What Do (and Don’t) They Believe”... · This idea is prompted by the near-blizzard of references to “evangelicals” in mainstream media during and since the presidential election season.· In an irenic spirit, Dr. Buschart offers a description of some of the history and (more) the theological beliefs of evangelicals. Buschart brings something of “an insider’s” perspective. In the process, he describes and acknowledges the diversity within and some of the weaknesses of evangelicalism, while giving an affirmative presentation of what evangelicalism at its best—not every individual person or church—is. This is Part 2 of a 2 part conversation with Dr. Buschart.
