O convidado do programa Pânico dessa sexta-feira (14) é Marcel van Hattem.Marcel van Hattem é cientista político, jornalista, deputado federal, vice-líder da oposição no Congresso Nacional e coordenador da Comissão de Danos Causados pelas Enchentes no Rio Grande do Sul.Nascido 8 de novembro de 1985, Marcel van Hattem possui bacharelado em Relações Internacionais e especialização em Direito, Economia e Democracia Constitucional, ambos pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Obteve o grau de mestre em Ciência Política pela Universidade de Leiden, em Jornalismo, Mídia e Globalização pelas Universidades de Aarhus, na Dinamarca, e de Amsterdã, na Holanda e é egresso do Programa de Liderança Política, Social e Empresarial da Georgetown University em Washington, D.C., Estados Unidos. Iniciou carreira profissional como entregador de jornais e posteriormente tornou-se repórter no Jornal Dois Irmãos. Foi colaborador convidado da Revista Voto e contribuiu com artigos de opinião e matérias para diferentes órgãos da imprensa brasileira, incluindo Zero Hora, Jornal do Comércio e O Estado de S. Paulo. Atuou na divisão internacional do Ministério dos Assuntos Econômicos, Agricultura e Inovação do Reino dos Países Baixos, em Haia e fundou a Argumento – Consultoria para Líderes de Expressão. Foi eleito em 2004, aos 18 anos, vereador de Dois Irmãos. Concorreu a deputado estadual e foi diplomado, em 2014, como primeiro suplente do Partido Progressista (PP), exercendo mandato de fevereiro de 2015 a março de 2018 como o deputado mais novo da Assembleia do Rio Grande do Sul. Notabilizou-se por proferir no Parlamento gaúcho discursos a favor das ideias de liberdade e contra ideologias estatistas e coletivistas.Uma seleção dos seus mais impactantes pronunciamentos, comentados, foi publicada no seu livro “Somos Nós Com Uma Voz: do megafone à tribuna em defesa da Liberdade, do Estado de Direito e da Democracia”, lançado pela LVM Editora. By exploring the Revolution's unique role in American history as a national origin myth, Hattem shows how the meaning of the Revolution has never been fixed, how remembering the nation's founding has often done far more to divide Americans than to unite them, and how revising the past is an important and long‑standing American political tradition. Americans agree that their nation's origins lie in the Revolution, but they have never agreed on what the Revolution meant. For nearly two hundred and fifty years, politicians, political parties, social movements, and a diverse array of ordinary Americans have constantly reimagined the Revolution to fit the times and suit their own agendas. In The Memory of '76: The Revolution in American History (Yale UP, 2024), Michael D. Hattem reveals how conflicts over the meaning and legacy of the Revolution—including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution—have influenced the most important events and tumultuous periods in the nation's history; how African Americans, women, and other oppressed groups have shaped the popular memory of the Revolution; and how much of our contemporary memory of the Revolution is a product of the Cold War. By exploring the Revolution's unique role in American history as a national origin myth, Hattem shows how the meaning of the Revolution has never been fixed, how remembering the nation's founding has often done far more to divide Americans than to unite them, and how revising the past is an important and long‑standing American political tradition. This interview was conducted by Hannah Nolan, a PhD Candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her work focuses upon the intersection of memory, partisanship, and ethnic identity during the early republic to explore the construction of Irish and American identities in the United States. Her research focuses on early diplomatic history in the United States, specifically Benjamin Franklin and the American Revolution. Her teaching interests include eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth-century American history; Revolutionary America; U.S. diplomacy; and the Atlantic world.Michael Hattem is an American historian, with interests in early America, the American Revolution, and historical memory. He received his PhD in History at Yale University and am the author of Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution (Yale University Press, 2020) and The Memory of '76: The Revolution in American History (Yale University Press, 2024). He has taught History and American Studies courses at The New School and Knox College.Joanne Freeman specializes in the politics and political culture of the revolutionary and early national periods of American History.  She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia.  Her most recent book, Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic (Yale University Press), won the Best Book award from the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic, and her edited volume, Alexander Hamilton: Writings (Library of America) was one of the Atlantic Monthly's “best books” of 2001.  Her current project, The Field of Blood: Congressional Violence in Antebellum America, explores physical violence in the U.S. Congress between 1830 and the Civil War, and what it suggests about the institution of Congress, the nature of American sectionalism, the challenges of a young nation's developing democracy, and the longstanding roots of the Civil War.

It is hard to find someone with a greater impact on American music and whose life demonstrates the complexities of the human experience than Ray Charles. This week we are joined by Michael Hattem to talk about one of the best biopics and performances I've ever seen with Ray (2004). This episode features candid discussions about the ups and downs of Ray Charles' life, how both his life and that of the United States have been shaped in memory, and a fascinating conversation about the history of African American musical traditions. I don't talk a lot in this episode, mostly because I was absolutely blown away by Michael's thoughts. He is the author of Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution, which explores the role of changing historical memories in revolutionary American culture and politics.He is an Associate Director of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute. Previously, he served as a Schwartz Postdoctoral Fellow at the New-York Historical Society and Visiting Faculty at The New School in 2017-2018 and as Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Knox College from 2018 to 2020.He is both a contributor to and Producer of The JuntoCast, the first podcast devoted to early American history and History Talks, a YouTube channel producing historical content by historians for a general audience. He also served as the Managing Editor and a co-founder of The Junto: A Group Blog on Early American History and have contributed to numerous other websites. He was nominated the culinary ambassador to the UAE Embassy in the United States, cooking for seventeen thousand people across 62 US cities over 100 days.
