Starting a fashion business from scratch? Don't miss this episode!
Are you dreaming of launching your own fashion business, specializing in unique hats and fascinators? That's fantastic! But turning that dream into a profitable reality requires more than just passion. It demands a solid plan, a realistic perspective, and a willingness to test and adapt. Recently, I had the pleasure of addressing a loyal podcast listener, Bolu Tunji, who wanted guidance on starting her own hat and fascinator business in Lagos, Nigeria. This podcast expands on that discussion, offering a framework to help you navigate the exciting, yet challenging, journey of entrepreneurship. Realistic Expectations & Fear of Failure First things first: starting a business is a risk. Not all businesses succeed. That's a fact. But don't let the fear of failure paralyze you. It's about learning, adapting, and increasing your odds of success. A Simple Framework for Success To improve your chances, let's tackle three crucial questions: * Do you have the right business idea? * Is this business idea feasible and profitable? * Can you build effective selling frameworks and processes around your product/service? 1. Do You Have the Right Business Idea? The "right" business idea is a blend of several factors: * Passion: This will fuel you through the inevitable tough times. * Skillset & Expertise: Credibility and practical wisdom are essential for designing a strong sales process. * Market Gaps: Identifying unmet needs can provide shortcuts to gauging demand and achieving product-market fit. For Bolu Tunji, and for you, these questions are vital: * Do you have a genuine passion for creating hats and fascinators? * Do you possess the necessary skills and expertise? * Is there a demand for unique fashion accessories like these in your target market? 2. Is the Business Feasible and Profitable? Answering this requires market validation. You need to determine if people are willing to pay for your creations. * Market Validation: Are there customers interested in your unique designs? * Demand: Is there a sustainable demand for your products? MVP: Your Testing Ground The Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is your first step. It's the smallest workable version of your business idea, used to test market interest. Consider these validation options: * Pre-selling: Offer your designs for pre-order. * Small Batch Production: Create a limited collection to test demand. * Local Market Testing: Showcase your products in boutiques or craft fairs. 3. Building Selling Frameworks and Processes This involves creating a system to effectively reach and convert customers. Offline Activities: * Direct marketing and networking. * Partnering with local retailers. * Attending bridal shows and fashion events. * Offering personalized styling sessions. * Collaborating with stylists and fashion entrepreneurs. Online Activities: * Creating a professional website. * Utilizing social media platforms. Crafting Your Selling Script A strong selling framework addresses key customer interactions: * Need Analysis: Understanding your client's fashion sensibilities. * Objection Handling: Addressing concerns and building trust. * Effective Proposals: Presenting your products in a compelling way. Starting a fashion business is an exciting adventure. By following these guidelines, you can increase your chances of success and bring your unique vision to life. Good luck!

Today we are covering the world of fast fashion. If you don't know the name Inditex, you certainly know Zara, the core business inside Inditex. My guest, Alistair Wittet, recently launched Aecus Partners, an equity boutique specializing in European and global equities, and has followed Inditex for decades. He gets into how the company pivoted its business over the years from the initial store expansion, the e-commerce evolution, and what has allowed Inditex to succeed where other fast fashion peers have struggled. There are so many interesting themes here: success in no-growth industries, the power of thoughtful vertical integration, decentralized decision-making, and corporate pivots. Please enjoy this Breakdown of Inditex. A Bond Account is a self-directed brokerage account with Public Investing, member FINRA/SIPC. Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 investment-grade and high-yield bonds. The [6.7%] yield is the average annualized yield to maturity (YTM) across all ten bonds in the Bond Account, before fees, as of [9/05/2024]. A bond's yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore a bond's YTM is “locked in” when the bond is purchased. Your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTM is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTM of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity, or if the issuer calls or defaults on the bond.
