    LinkedIn Content Marketing

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2022 27:04

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. We're back with a special solo episode, focused on one of our favorite social media platforms, LinkedIn. Today's episode is all about effectively using LinkedIn for the purposes of content marketing and positioning yourself as a thought leader. We talk about how to use hashtags efficiently, how often should you add value on social media instead of just selling, and the best ways to share content. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ If you're someone who knows that you should be doing more on LinkedIn, we're going to walk you through some of the different reasons why you should be active there and share with you some of our favorite best practices. LinkedIn's algorithm highly values original content. However, if you'd like to share someone else's content, there are 2 ways to do it: Simply hit the share button but also add your original comment to the post. A better way is to copy and paste the text of the original post and post it on your page. Always credit the original creator.   The algorithm is highly focused on relevance. This means that the people who are seeing and engaging with your posts have to find them relevant. To help with that use hashtags. Only use 3-5 relevant hashtags. You can search for the topmost relevant hashtags on any topic on the Internet.   LinkedIn rewards people who are engaging on the platform. If you are posting regularly, but you're not seeing your content grow in terms of views or interactions, it might make sense to start engaging in the comment sections of other people's posts. You can recommend a post to someone by tagging them in the comment section. Ask questions or share your thoughts under a post. Use Gary V's “Dollar Eighty strategy”. He says to give your two cents on the top 9 posts of the 10 most relevant hashtags. If this is too much, then go for the 3 most relevant hashtags and comment on posts on those a few times a week.   LinkedIn rewards its viewers for staying on the platform. The algorithm doesn't like external links. If you want to use them then put the link in the comments a few minutes after posting.   Add value 3 to 5 times as often as you try to sell something. If you are posting a closing or a listing, talk about why that listing or closing is unique.  Make your post engaging from an image perspective. Instead of stock photos, use your own pictures. Personalize your content and use an active and conversational voice. If you are still on the fence about using LinkedIn, we want to encourage you to hop on board. It is an incredible tool and one of the platforms with the lowest barriers to entry. You can start a new profile today just by uploading your existing resume or a company bio if you already have one. Cultivating Resilience, with Melissa Wasserman

We're back after a short break! Our guest today is Melissa Wasserman, psychologist, speaker, consultant, and trauma expert. In this wide-ranging episode, we talk about her untraditional career journey and how the pandemic has caused a lot of chaos in our personal and work lives. Melissa also shares her best piece of advice about navigating challenges, cultivating resilience, and some tools that you can use to implement in your daily life.  Learn more about Melissa and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “One of my biggest values and such a big part of my identity is being relational and being human.”    03:52 Melissa grew up in a Jewish family and her parents both worked in the real estate industry. She was always very active as a child and valued meaningful relationships. She attended religious school growing up and attended religious studies in college.   During her years in college, Melissa had a class about American religion and its impact on the Vietnam War. She learned about family traumas in military families and realized that this was her calling in life. She became a licensed psychologist and a trauma expert. “Communication is a mega resilience factor in systems to buffer the impact of mental health symptoms.”   16:47 Melissa shares some advice on how to navigate through challenges.  Reflect on previous challenges that have already passed. How did you go through those? What have you learned? Identify some strategies that you already used successfully in the past and think about how could you use those in your current situation. Be aware of the warning signs of burnout. Don't wait until you feel completely burnt out, practice self-preservation and self-care continously.   Melissa is a trauma expert and specializes in generational family traumas. In her experience, family traumas are stronger in families where they don't have good communication with each other. Communication is key and it is a huge resilience factor, so it's important to learn how to communicate well and listen to each other.   Melissa started her business just a few months before the global pandemic. This presented a lot of challenges for her, but she loves the dynamic work environment and wearing many hats as a business owner.  The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Patience - not just with others but mostly with herself. Making mistakes is part of the human experience, so we need to be kind to ourselves and learn from them.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Community. These two words are greatly interconnected to Melissa as she finds purpose in community and through connectivity.      What do you hope others take away from your story?   That we are all human and we are all resilient. Be gentle and kind to yourself and others.  About Our Guest, Melissa Wasserman Dr. Melissa Wasserman (AKA Dr. Meli) is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY30983).   She has specialty in traumatic stress, particularly how trauma-related challenges impact interpersonal relationships (e.g., couples, families, social, work relationships). For Dealmakers in Transition

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. We have a special episode today that is specifically tailored for brokers, leasing agents, originators, and other business development professionals who are changing jobs. We dive deep into Allison's transition checklist that helps you be as effective as possible and point you to some great resources if you feel stuck in your transition. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “The first step in making a transition is owning that it is time to go and spending some time thinking about the future.” This winter is a big season for transition in commercial real estate. If you're considering transitioning and need support or guidance, then reach out to us. Allison is the founder of CRE Recruiting, a commercial real estate focused national search firm. You can email her at allison@crerecruiting.com.   Here are a few useful tips to make your transition smoother and more successful.   Know your independent contractor agreement or employment agreement, and locate policy manuals or other documents you might have signed as a part of joining your company. These legal documents govern your relationship with your current company, and can be crucial in your transition. Make sure you understand everything, especially sections that detail “termination”, and if you don't - seek out expert help in interpreting them.   Map out the current deal pipeline. Make sure you understand the deals that you have in progress. Compare that pipeline to any post-termination obligations that your current company might have.   Save your contact list privately if you can. Make sure that you have your phone set up to save contacts directly to your personal phone or cloud account to avoid losing them when you leave the company. Some contact information might be subject to a technology privacy policy or non-disclosure policy so learn about that beforehand.   Plan the marketing of your transition. Think about how to let people know that you've changed firms. Segment your clients into different groups based on how close your relationship is to them, and plan an appropriate approach for notifying each group.   Move your license(s) and update your social media with the new company. Your biographical information should be updated across all platforms from your new company's website to your social media channels. Take your personal belongings home from the office ahead of time. You can leave some of the bigger items in the office as they will be returned to you and would cause unnecessary attention, but you should take home important personal items home with you over time in advance of the transition.   These are just a few of the items on our brokerage transition checklist. If you want to learn more about the process or need some in-depth guidance on your transition, then reach out to Allison at allison@crerecruiting.com.   Regardless of the reason, if it is time to go and you need help and support, we are here for you! Our guest today is Leka Devatha, a real estate developer, broker, and the host of the wildly successful meetup, Real Estate At Work. In this episode, we follow her journey from India to the US, leaving the corporate world to chase her entrepreneurial dreams, and we hear some of her most successful and challenging deals throughout her career. Join us and get inspired! Learn more about Leka and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. The more you can put yourself in that growth-mode, the more amazing and bigger things you're going to do.” “The beauty of real estate is that there is no roadmap. You literally can go and create the life that you want.”   02:14 Leka has always been entrepreneurial. She started her first company at 18 years old in India. When she got married, she moved to the US and worked in fashion merchandising. Leka didn't feel empowered in her day job and wanted to do something more entrepreneurial.    One day she was listening to the radio and heard an ad from a real estate flipping company that held a seminar in her city. The seminar changed her life as she got very interested in real estate.   Leka's first fix-and-flip was in 2014. Since then, she's flipped over 50 properties ranging from residential to commercial and she started her first syndication this year.  “I try to find 3 to 4 different exit strategies for every project that I take on.”   10:39 Leka talks about the difference between passive and active investing. She sees a lot of value in passive investing as it is a great way to diversify your investments.   She shares some interesting stories from her real estate career. Once she bought a house that burnt down just 4 days before closing. Another time, she held onto a property for 4 years that she initially planned to flip in 3 months. According to Leka, she learned a lot from her deals and continues to learn every day.   Leka's best pieces of advice on how to succeed in real estate: Find 3-4 exit strategies for every project you take on. Don't be afraid to make decisions and be flexible. Always be open to learning new things. Find off-market deals by networking in the industry. Network with your community and the wholesalers. Do what you say. Follow through with your promises. Leka is running a successful virtual meetup called Real Estate At Work where she features prominent speakers in the real estate industry. Join her meetup here.   The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   To hold everything she buys. Leka started as a flipper, but over the years, she learned that there is only so much real estate to go around. Now, if she finds an amazing deal, she holds on to it. The way to build long-term wealth is through appreciation and cash flow.      What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Community and Innovation. Innovation for her is learning or finding things that nobody has done before. As long as you are in putting yourself in front of a learning curve, you are constantly innovating.      What do you hope others take away from your story?   That she's just a normal person. She didn't come from wealth but she put in the work and reached success. Leka encourages everyone to take one step at a time and play the long game. Eventually, you will succeed. About Our Guest, Leka Devatha Leka is a real estate developer and broker based in Seattle, WA. She is the President of Rehabit Homes, Inc. a company focused on residential and commercial redevelopment. She has spearheaded hundreds of transactions, developing around 100M in real estate. He transitioned to commercial real estate in 2020 and now works as a CRE advisor for restaurant owners. “Ultimately people want to connect with people who they can relate to. Once you put out there who you are, you're gonna start attracting people you actually want to work with.”   21:30 Kyle is very active on social media, and he coaches his clients on how to use these platforms creatively. Today, it's important to be authentic and good at storytelling - just be yourself so you can attract people who can relate to you.   Kyle created an accountability group for CRE advisors where he helps them navigate the various social media platforms to get better at digital marketing. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Patience. If you're in the process of planning out 2022, or facing some challenges at the moment, then this episode is for you! For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “When we can accurately define and recognize our emotions, we are one step closer to allowing them to visit, stay for a while, and then to pass.” We're excited to welcome you back in 2022 and a new season of the podcast. Today, we talk about resilience and bouncing back. Recently, we've had many conversations with people who are facing difficult challenges like this neverending pandemic, changes in the job market, or conflicts at work.   If you also had some challenges in your life recently, then we want to share a few tools and practices that can help you tackle these challenges and plan a brighter future.     Sit with Your Feelings   A good practice is to name and acknowledge the emotions that you're feeling. Underneath your frustration, there might be fear, anger, or jealousy.      Ask Yourself Thought-provoking, Deeper Questions to Resolve These Feelings   “What do you really want to say to your friends, family, and yourself?” “What do you need to forgive?” “What do you need at this moment to move forward?”     Remind Yourself of Who You Really Are   Create a “Badass” list. Write down all the things that you give yourself credit for and all the challenges that you overcame. Practice self-love.     Envision a Better Future   Reflect on the question: “What do you want to create?” These could be feelings, thoughts, or achievements.  Other helpful questions when planning your future could be: “What would a person who is successfully creating these things choose? What do you need to believe in order to achieve this vision?”     Create a Reset Plan for Yourself   Draw and redraw boundaries and prioritize self-care. Our guests today are Daisy Serrano and Luc D'Abreau. This dynamic husband and wife duo is on a mission to help millennials grow generational wealth through multifamily investing. In this action-packed conversation, the couple shares their individual and collective “Why”, how they started investing, and the importance of empowering millennial investors. Tune in and get inspired! Learn more about Daisy and Luc and their story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “Being in a relationship is very different than working together. Being business partners has helped us understand each other on a very different note as well.”   02:19 Daisy studied criminology and had a career in international education for about 10 years. She became interested in multifamily real estate when she started dating Luc, who already had a passion for investing. Luc has an engineering background and his family had a few single-family rentals growing up. After he read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki & Sharon Lechter, he knew he wanted to invest in multifamily.   Daisy and Luc opened a private equity multifamily investment firm, Make It Rain Capital. Luc focuses on the numbers and underwriting and Daisy is responsible for networking and building communities. “You're gonna mess up stuff anyway because you don't know what you're doing, so you might as well “fail forward”...”   10:37 Daisy and Luc started a podcast for Make it Rain and their goal is to help millennial investors learn more about real estate investing. Daisy explains that there are still not many opportunities for millennials, let alone women or Latinos in the multifamily world. Their goal is to change that.   The couple shares their “Whys” and the reason why they got into investing. Daisy's family is from Mexico and her parents sacrificed a lot to provide a better life for her. She wants to reach financial freedom to be able to help her parents retire. Luc wants to make an impact and help people.   Daisy and Luc moved from Southern California to Austin, Texas in 2020. They're working on building a community of investors there. Their plan for 2022 is to bring good opportunities to their investors and build a multifamily investing course.     42:28 The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   For Daisy, it was to gain confidence around their business and her abilities. For Luc, it was taking full responsibility for the business and the time of their employees and investors.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Impact. According to the couple, their purpose is to impact people, so these principles go hand in hand. Their goal is to impact a million lives in their lifetime so they treat every interaction as an opportunity to make an impact.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That we are all extremely powerful people. If we weren't strong as humans, then our ancestors wouldn't have survived. We can accomplish anything collectively. Practice self-love, keep your promises to yourself, and do things that are challenging. Our guest today is Robert Nickell, serial entrepreneur, real estate investor, and founder and CEO of Rocket Station. In this special conversation, we talk about Robert's career journey, how he built Rocket Station, and how it helps empower entrepreneurs. At the end of the episode, we also get to know Allison's personal assistant, Jaja, who talks about her experience at Rocket Station. Don't miss out on this action-packed episode! Learn more about Robert and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “I didn't care about cars and having a fancy lifestyle. I wanted to have freedom and control of my time.”   03:27 Robert started his career in real estate. He always wanted to be an entrepreneur and to have more freedom, but he worked long hours as a real estate investor. Through a mentor, Robert learned about leveraging virtual assistants in the Philippines and he decided to try it.   Although his initial experience was rocky, Robert learned a lot about outsourcing and optimizing his process to get optimum results. This ultimately led him to open his own hiring and outsourcing business, Rocket Station in 2013. “The right people in the Philippines servicing the right clients in the US, and we get to bridge that every day. There's not a whole lot more fulfilling than that.”   17:47 Allison is a client of Rocket Station, and she shares her experience working with the company and how much it helped her business grow.   Back in 2019, when Allison left her corporate job to become an entrepreneur, she did everything by herself. By 2020, she knew that she needed some help in order to continue growing. Allison started working with Rocket Station and met her virtual assistant, Jaja, and the connection has been wonderful for both of them.   Robert is very passionate about Rocket Station's customized approach to each of their clients, and the quality of their team members supporting their clients. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   That he doesn't have to do everything by himself in his business. He did that for many years and it limited him in many ways.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Values and Community. Rocket Station is a value-driven company and its mission statement is “enhance lives through better business.” Their core values are very important for them. Community is also crucial for Robert. His favorite phrase is “success is in the agency of others”.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   Just take it one day at a time and outsource the tasks that don't serve you. Become a little bit more efficient and productive every day and fix one problem at a time. About Our Guest, Robert Nickell   Robert Nickell is an accomplished real estate investor and serial entrepreneur in the business process outsourcing industry. He is CEO of Dallas-based Rocket Station, which he founded in 2018. Rocket Station recruits and trains college-educated Filipino professionals to fulfill a variety of remote roles at small to mid-sized American companies. Under Nickell's leadership, Rocket Station has become a multimillion-dollar company with 10% month-over-month growth since early 2020 and more than 700 Filipino team members.   Rocket Station is the second BPO company Nickell has founded. For four years, he co-owned Dallas-based Investor Virtual Assistant Services, which provided outsourcing services specifically to the real estate vertical. Entering the New Year with Intention

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we prepare for the fast-approaching New Year and talk about some of our favorite practices, tips, resources, and thought-provoking questions around annual goal-setting & planning. Let's end the year on a positive note and begin 2022 in a position of strength and power! For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “Setting and achieving meaningful goals resides at the intersection of introspection and execution.” 2022 is only a few weeks away, and it's a great time for introspection, reflection, and revelations - here are some concepts, ideas, and exercises to consider as you evaluate what's important for the year ahead:   The first exercise is based on Michael S. Hyatt ‘s book, Your Best Year Ever. He created 10 categories that are all important for a healthy, balanced life. The 10 different areas are mental health, physical health, spirituality, intellectual life, partnerships, parental life, friendships, jobs, hobbies, and personal finances. Rate yourself on a 1-10 scale in all these categories and see where you should focus more in the next year.   Have a few undisturbed hours with yourself and take a granular review of your calendar. Start to understand how you are spending your time and how that relates to your achievement of the key metrics that you have for your business, for your career, and for your life. Once you've taken a look at your key metrics, the next step is to consider the assessment of your goals versus your actual results. What are the big wins? What were the challenges? What were the big “aha” moments? What are the areas for opportunity?   Create goals for 2022 and really sink into them. Connecting on a deep level to what we really want, who we really are, and the life that we're trying to create is what drives successful goal setting. People who can vividly describe or picture their goals are 1.2-1.4X more likely to achieve them. Visualizing your ideal life is very helpful when you're trying to achieve your goals.   Find a group of people who can keep you accountable. If you don't have a tribe or a circle of folks around you with whom you feel deeply connected, we invite you to examine why. Join a community or create one yourself. Our guest today is Noel Massie, a retired Vice President of US Operations for UPS, author, speaker, and consultant to various companies and non-profit organizations. During his 42-year career at UPS, Noel was responsible for tens of thousands of employees across the country, and in this episode we dig deep into what makes a great leader. We talk about Noel's early life and his storied career, the influential people that shaped him, and his unique worldview. Tune in and get inspired. Learn more about Noel and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com.   “You can't hope to get more than you give.” “I can't recall anyone in my family that didn't wake up every day to go out and do something productive and positive.”   04:20 Noel started his career in 1977 at UPS as an intern, and worked there until retiring as the Vice President of US Operations in 2019. Retiring was a difficult decision for him because he loved his work.   Noel grew up in a family with a strong work ethic, and his biggest inspiration and first mentor was his grandfather who owned and operated a neighborhood barber shop.   “Leadership is influence.”   14:00 Noel is very passionate about leadership, and believes that the real meaning of leadership is the ability to influence others. Conversely, using force or threat is not leadership.    He shares that a business has a fundamental responsibility to provide economic safety and security to its employees. The secondary purpose is to provide economic benefit to the community.   Noel's advice to become a better leader: Find a mentor, and learn how to receive feedback. Be honest with yourself and the people around you. Learn how to motivate a whole team regardless of their backgrounds or worldviews. The focus should always be on the betterment of the group as a whole. Instead of trying to convince your employees about something, help them to see why it makes sense.   Noel is currently writing a book about leadership. He plans to publish it along with a podcast in 2022. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   “When to shut up, because there are moments in everyone's life when shutting up makes the most sense.” According to Noel, this is very hard to do if you're in a leadership position but there are many times when you should just listen instead of trying to solve problems.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Values and Community. Leaders act in ways that are consistent with their beliefs. You need to cultivate certain positive values and act based on them.  No one wants to live in a bad community, and we should work to make our communities betterl for everyone.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   Take personal responsibility for your actions, and don't assign your failures to others. About Our Guest, Noel Massie   Noel Massie is the former Vice President of US Operations for United Parcel Service (UPS). In this national role he was responsible for leading thousands of employees directly and hundreds of thousands of employees indirectly. Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we bring you a special Clubhouse episode. We discussed how to know whether you should consider changing companies or careers, what to do to prepare, and how to navigate a transition. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “Career development is not a ladder, it's a jungle gym. You have to reach out for that next rung but it may not always be directly in front of you.” Garland is a career expert with over 15 years of recruiting and career coaching experience. Christina is a talented strategic leader who has worked across marketing operations and strategy throughout her career in commercial real estate, retail, and other industries.   Together with Allison, they discuss the question many of us ask about our work - “should I stay in my current job or is it time to look for something new?” “Should I stay or should I go?”   At the beginning of the conversation, we discussed the signs that it's probably time to look for a more fulfilling job. You're not excited about work, or you don't find fulfillment anymore You're stressed or feeling that “something is missing” You have physical symptoms related to being unmotivated or stressed. You get sick often, struggle to get out of bed in the morning or feel unusually fatigued   “In the age of information, ignorance is a choice.”   Here are some actionable steps you can do to improve your situation before you quit your job: Discover your personal values. Write down a list of 25 adjectives that describe who you are and see if it's in alignment with your current job List out the skills you want to learn in the near future and see if you have an opportunity to learn those in your current role Assume positive intent with your management and ask for the things you want Create a “loved, learned, and leave behind” list about your job, and see which column is the longest Document how well you're resourced. How long can you survive with your current assets if you can't find a new job for a while? “Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”   In the second part of the conversation, we talk about how to prepare to succeed in your job search.  Investigate the industry you're interested in, and seek out opportunities to shadow others and see if it's a good fit Don't be afraid to include people in your job searching process. Ask the people who know you about your strengths It's okay to feel nervous about change. Use fear as a compass and go in the direction of fear because that is where the growth is Networking is crucial when changing jobs, so be active on LinkedIn and other social media platforms   If you enjoyed this episode and want to hear more or be a part of the next Women in Real Estate Group Clubhouse conversation, make sure to follow Allison on Instagram and Clubhouse. The Path to Financial Empowerment, with Rahkim Sabree

Our guest today is Rahkim Sabree, financial coach, author, and TEDx speaker. In this episode, we'll learn all about his early life, how that influenced his career, and why he felt the need to embark on his entrepreneurial journey. We talk about financial empowerment, supreme confidence, and what it means to have a money mindset. Join us and get inspired by Rahkim's incredible journey. Learn more about Rahkim and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “Who I am today, is really based on everything that I've learned, that I've internalized, that I've experienced, based on somebody else's sacrifice.”   02:20 Rahkim grew up the child of two young parents. He learned about supreme confidence and persistence from an early age through the influence of his Grandfather.  This laid within him a strong foundation for his success.   When Rakhim was 21 years old, he started his career in the banking world. As a teller, he was exposed to customers with a wide-range of attitudes and relationships to money. As he enjoyed the education part of his job the most, he decided to lean into it and became an author, speaker, and financial coach.   Rahkim is an advocate for empowerment and he uses personal finance and financial education to help people. When people have a better understanding of their relationship with money, it starts to open up pathways for empowerment in other areas of their life. “Use fear as an ally. You can move through fear with that fear towards the accomplishment of your goals.”   16:56 Rahkim left the corporate world during this time known as the Great Resignation, and is a full-time entrepreneur. It was a big step for him after almost 10 years in the corporate world.   He started as a financial educator but realized that financial empowerment is missing from the market. Many people have basic financial literacy, but don't have the belief in themselves to take action or to set goals that could make them uncomfortable. So Rahkim developed a space in behavioral finance that focuses on financial trauma and empowerment.   One of Rahkim's goals is to create transparency around finances, so people can heal from their financial traumas. He teaches how to view fear as an ally and use it to reach our goals. 43:02 The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   To have supreme confidence. Rahkim has experienced low self-esteem in the past. He had to learn how to be confident in himself without being arrogant or egotistical.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Values and Authenticity. Rahkim built his brand around these 2 words. He's focusing on his values in his business and shares his journey honestly.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   Supreme confidence. There's a tremendous amount of pressure to be somebody that we're not or to only show the filtered version of us on social media. However, being who you are is the best way to be content and truly successful. About Our Guest, Rahkim Sabree   Rahkim grew up in Mount Vernon, NY and embodies the idea that you don't have to succumb to your environment or the limitations of what you know.    Rahkim is a strong believer in the power of the mind often making reference to the "law of attraction" and the power of intentionality. Among his passions are coaching, financial education, personal development, and entrepreneurship.   Today, Rahkim works exclusively with leaders whose mission is to improve people's lives; who see bigger than themselves and who in addition to wanting to propel their business to the next level, want to (re-) find greater flexibility and freedom using the power of money.  A warm thanks to Rahkim Sabree for taking the time to share his unique insights and experiences with us. Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we share an interesting way to learn about reaching success in business - acronyms. Using acronyms is a good practice to remind yourself of an idea or value. We share a new and easy-to-remember acronym that you can use to recall the steps that lead to success. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “HOPE - Help One Person Everyday” Acronyms are great for rememberings things and keeping a particular value front and center on a daily basis. Today, we share an acronym that Allison created about succeeding in business. These 7 elements are common in all successful business owners' strategies.    This acronym is VA VA VOOM. “Va va voom” is a phrase that has been used in cartoons and has many positive meanings like exciting, enticing, appealing, attractive, vivacious, energetic, and passionate.   VVisibility. People can't do business with people who they don't know. You can't be successful if you're not visible to your ideal clients so show up on social media and be an active networker.   AAuthenticity. There is a desire to put only our best foot forward, especially in online spaces. However, when we show up as our authentic selves, it attracts people and opportunities that are meant for us and repels those that are not.    VAValue-add. Adding value is something we should be thinking about all the time when we're interacting with people. Going the extra mile for someone distinguishes us as someone who creates value and cares about the individual we're connecting with.    VVision. You need to have a crystal clear vision to be successful in business. Create a clear vision and think about it when you're making business decisions.    OOffers. This is how you engage with the world and bring your value-add to the market. Think about the value that you're creating and providing, and make sure that you have crafted a compelling offer for your ideal clients.    OOptimization. Think of optimization as the delivery of your offer. Think about how you're going to engage with your ideal client. Make sure that you spend some time focusing on optimizing your offer.   MMonetization. Monetization means turning something into a revenue-generating activity. Monetization is often an afterthought for many people in business. However, the more time and effort we put into monetization and coming up with multiple revenue streams, the more financially successful we can be.   What's your favorite acronym? Share it with us. She's also a mom of 2 and a community involvement advocate.    Christina has had an interesting career journey - she has worked in many different fields, from the restaurant industry to marketing in retail. She's also worked in both small businesses and larger, more complex corporate environments.   All these experiences shaped her view on work and life and eventually led her to CRE and community involvement advocacy. She realized that who you work for and the tribe you build really impacts your experience at work.    “You have to build your tribe or network that resonates with you.”   10:49 Christina talks about her values in the workplace. Equity and valuing others' personal time are very important for her.    She shares her best pieces of advice on how to find the right work environment for you.  Understand your self-worth. If you don't feel valued in your current workplace, then it's maybe time to change. Practice self-care. Work on the things that you care about. Reflect on your likes, and dislikes, and discover your personal value system. Advocate for yourself. Control your destiny instead of letting it fall on other people to decide your path for you. Find a person or a group of people that you could bounce ideas off of about your career and the next steps you want to take. “The risks you take, especially on yourself, are always worth a try.”   22:46 Christina talks about the generational differences in the commercial real estate industry. The older generation tends to think that work has to be hard to be valuable. The younger generation, on the other hand, is misunderstood and many times called “entitled” or “lazy”. However, according to Christina, they understand their worth more.   Christina talks about female leadership in male-dominated industries. Women tend to be more modest about their successes. Her advice is to not be afraid to step into your power because this can motivate younger generations. Also, be courageous and don't wait until you know everything in order to take the next step in your career.   Christina is running in a local election as a councilperson because community involvement has always been very important for her. She encourages everyone to get involved in their local communities if they want to see change. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Recognizing that she has value on her own without having other people to prove that for her.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Values and Growth. Christina was raised with the pressure to always aspire for perfection. Over the years she was able to shift her mindset and realized that continuously evolving is what growth truly means to her. She doesn't have to be perfect and is focused on her own continuous evolution.       What do you hope others take away from your story?   That you have to spend some time understanding yourself, where you are, and what you need. Then create intentionality about doing those things for yourself, whatever that may be. Be thoughtful. About Our Guest, Christina Balas   Christina is a big picture thinker with the attention to process details. She is a dynamic, results-driven professional with 10+ years of experience with a demonstrated ability to build business strategies that help achieve profit goals and improve performance. Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we bring you a change-up episode. Every other Friday, Allison and the CRE Digital Army have a Clubhouse discussion. Last week, the conversation was about pivots, transitions, and changing for the better. We talk about how we navigated the pandemic and how our recruiting processes and businesses changed over the last 1.5 years. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/   “Be authentically yourself.”   Since the beginning of the pandemic, many of us have had to pivot or make adjustments in our work life. This affected almost every profession, not just commercial real estate. We talked about the Great Resignation in one of our previous episodes and how that also forced us to change.   Last week, we had a great conversation on Clubhouse about pivoting, changing business practices, and adapting to the new work environment we found ourselves in since the start of the pandemic. “Think differently about the times where we can't operate business as usual. What are the things that we can do to step into that void, show up and be of service?“   At the beginning of our conversation, we talk about the processes that changed in our businesses during the pandemic. Many business owners adopted new practices, systems, and technology.   Here are a few pivots that came up in our conversation: Using social media more often and more strategically than before.  Including younger generations in the business through social media. Working with interns and opening up the CRE world to gen Z. Creating online communities that lead to a wider variety of collaborations. Having the right mindset and realizing that CRE is a long game. Learning how to deal with uncertainty and preparing for a better future.     “We're meant to stand out, we're not meant to blend in”   Later in the conversation, the group shares their best pieces of advice on how to pivot and take a business in new directions in these unprecedented times. Always be open to learning. Look for mentors and communities that could help you. Be patient and think long-term.  If you're changing companies, make sure to leave on a good note and keep up the relationships. Be yourself and don't be afraid to show your personality. Lean into your strengths and eventually, you will succeed in your new endeavors. Just because you're coming out of a challenging chapter doesn't mean the rest of your book is going to be written that way.       “Be still and listen.”      You were given your dream for a reason. Listen to the still small voice, get quiet and you will find the answers.     “You will never be criticized by someone doing more than you.  You will only be criticized by someone doing less.”If you wouldn't ask that person for their opinion or expertise on a subject, why would you take their unsolicited advice to heart?    Remember, “Other people's opinions are none of your business.” - Robin Sharma     “You have everything you need.  Start where you are. Use what you have.  Do what you can.” - Arthur AsheOften we feel that we need to know everything before we can start a new journey. This is a form of procrastination. You already have everything you need to be successful for whatever challenges may arise.       “Someday is not a day of the week.”       “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it.  Time will pass anyway.” – Earl NightingaleTime will pass anyway, so you might as well start today. Start with small steps, and always focus on the next small step.       “This too shall pass.”  If you're going through challenges, just know that nothing lasts forever. But it's not just about weathering the storm, it's also about being grateful for what you have now.         “One person can change the world.” - Rosa Parks     “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” - Mahatma GhandiSometimes we can feel like we don't know how to make a difference in the world. The work that you do might not feel significant enough to you, but we want to remind you that you can make a huge difference just by helping others. Live authentically and inspire others that way.     “For what it's worth... it's never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you've never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of, and if you're not, I hope you have the courage to start over again.” - F. Scott FitzgeraldRegardless of where we've come from and what we've endured, we still have the choice to change. We still have the opportunity to write a different ending to our story.    What's your favorite quote? Share it with us. Our guest today is Tressa LaVasco, founder of Lovasco Creative Group, and a CRE social media strategist and community connector. In this conversation, we talk about how she started her own business, how to be courageous as an entrepreneur, and the benefits of having a strong personal brand on social media. Learn more about Tressa and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “I have my family of coaches on my side. That allows me to make a mistake and know that I'm not really failing.”   02:02 Tressa studied entrepreneurship in college because she wanted to start her own business. Having many entrepreneurs in her family helped her to find the courage for her own journey. She became interested in commercial real estate 3 years ago, and started her own CRE-focused social media business last year.   Tressa's advice for people who want to embark on an entrepreneurial journey is to dig down deep and find the courage. You're never alone - there are people along the way who can help you. “Yes, there's all these amazing trends on Instagram for the Reels, but not everybody's comfortable doing those - so find what's comfortable for you.”   07:54 Tressa is passionate about social media, and believes it's a tool to communicate with more people than you previously believed possible. You can connect with your audience and develop a rapport with them so they know you, like you, and eventually trust you enough to do business with you.   Tressa explains how to be authentic and build a strong personal brand on social media. Her advice is to start posting and don't be afraid to show your personality. It's okay to post personal things, but be sure to keep your ideal client in mind. In the beginning, try to get into a posting rhythm and once you get used to social media, hire an expert to help you level up.   Self-care is essential for Tressa to find the balance between her work and personal life. She tries to be outside at least an hour every day, sets do-not-disturb on her phone after 7 PM, and listens to audiobooks. Her faith is also very important for her. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Learning to allow others to step in and accepting help.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Authenticity. Goal setting is crucial because if you don't have goals then you're not going anywhere. You should have a purpose that is authentic and kind to guide you and help you set goals.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   Have courage and take the leap. Being able to help others and own your own business is worth the fear.  About Our Guest, Tressa LoVasco   Tressa LoVasco grew up as a midwesterner, but has since put down roots in Park City, Utah!   You can find her developing her business at the top of mountains, capturing her favorite moments through the lens of a camera, and making new connections over a glass at the local wine bar.   Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, she has always visualized herself with “founder” in her title. The Great Resignation

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 14, 2021 23:27

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we discuss an important and hot topic, “the Great Resignation”. We talk about the context and statistics about this phenomenon, why it's happening, how you can safeguard your organization, and what you can do if you're the one who's looking for a new position. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “Your network is your net worth.” Why is the Great Resignation happening?   If we go back to May of 2021, about 36% of all Americans were looking for a new job or were open to a new opportunity. Now, in September, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, nearly 65% of all Americans are looking for a new job. This number is even higher in the LatinX and Black communities.     46% of women and 34% of men are looking for a new job because of financial reasons, but non-financial benefits like flexibility, professional growth, learning new skills, and overall well-being are increasingly important drivers as well.   One of the main reason's behind the Great Resignation is that the proactive attrition that happens every year didn't happen in 2020 due to the pandemic.  Those who would have left their companies in 2020 have delayed those moves to 2021, effectively doubling the normal turnover our economy would experience. What you can do to safeguard your organization?   9 out of 10 executives are seeing more turnover within their organizations than normal. Here are some useful tips that you can implement today to make sure that you don't have a massive amount of departures: Compensation reviews – Try to get your hands on as much information about compensation within your industry and within your market as possible. Give extra consideration to the people who have been with your organization the longest because they are at the greatest risk of below-market compensation. Review recent departures – Ask for feedback and see how you can act on it.  Employee satisfaction interviews/surveys – Find out how the people in your organization are feeling. How has COVID impacted your team and business and where has the company performed well or underperformed? Look for themes, patterns, and listen actively to your team. Address the issues and implement changes immediately. What to do if you're the one looking for a new opportunity?   Get clarity – Use journaling to determine what you loved, learned, and want to leave behind in your current job. With that knowledge, you can transition powerfully out of this job, without recreating the same experience at your next company.   Prepare your allies – Build a top 10 list of influential people you're connected to who can help connect you with people and opportunities. Provide them with clarity on what you're seeking and specify how they can help you. Start building new connections – Get active on platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Clubhouse. Start contributing positively to conversations in your area of interest, niche, or expertise.   Resources for the show:   https://fortune.com/2021/08/20/us-workers-looking-for-jobs/ https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ https://www.crerecruiting.com/  https://www.creatwork.co/ The Growing Careers and Companies Framework Allison's LinkedIn     Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Growing Careers and Companies Podcast.   If you enjoyed the show, there are a few things we would love you to do right now:  SUBSCRIBE to the Growing Careers and Companies Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts  Please RATE & REVIEW and let us know what you'd like to hear next Finally, we invite you to JOIN our mailing list for news you can use   Please share this episode with someone you think it would inspire!   Until the next time, we appreciate you being here.

In this conversation, we talk about lifestyle design, Maurice's career journey, and the 5 types of freedom. Join us and learn how to create the life of your dreams! Learn more about Maurice and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “We are intended to be on this world to thrive not to exist” “I always had this notion that life was supposed to be more than sitting behind a desk, or being in the rat race, or being in the matrix”   02:49 Maurice has always had multiple career paths he pursued concurrently. He worked as a consultant at Accenture and was a federal agent in the military. He retired from the military in 2019 and plans to retire from his consultant career this October so he can devote his full focus to international real estate investing and development.   Maurice always knew that life has more to offer than sitting in the office from 9-5. His philosophy is to work to live and not live to work.    He's traveled to 96 countries so far, seen many different cultures, and made many connections. Maurice has 5 freedom principles that he lives by. There are: Financial freedom: to have enough passive investments and not having to work. Time freedom: to have enough time for his loved ones and community. Geographic freedom: to be able to live anywhere in the world. Freedom of purpose: to have an impact on other people and help his community. Freedom of relationships: to be able to connect with people and not be in toxic relationships.    “Your purpose is to find your purpose. Your purpose is not to do what everybody else is doing and follow the traditional path.”   13:13 Maurice's goal has never been to have a lot of money or to have the most significant title. His goals are to have maximum exposure to experiences - to build memories, meaningful businesses, and have an impact on other people's lives.   For people who feel like their job is not for them and want to change, Maurice's advice is to purposefully use their careers and active income to design the life that they really want. His purpose is to be in love, to be loved by a community, and to learn constantly.   Maurice automates as many tasks as possible in his businesses and doesn't have a physical office or employees. This way, he can work from anywhere in the world.   The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   That he's not alone and not unique. He thinks in his own unique way, but he has people around him to support him.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Community and Legacy. Maurice's parents immigrated from Haiti and tried their hardest to give Maurice a good education. So for Maurice, legacy means giving your kids, your family, your friends, or your community more than what you have in a form of education.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That it's possible. The thing that you have always thought is impossible, is possible. Surround yourself with like-minded people or people who've done something that you want to do, and unlearn the belief system that you're not capable. Experience the world. About Our Guest, Maurice Philogene   Senior Executive, Real Estate Investor & Entrepreneur, Restaurant Owner, Explorer of 100 Countries, Public Servant (Federal Agent & Police Officer), Philanthropist and Lifestyle Design/Wealth Coach. He is a Founding Member of Quattro Capital and his passion is living life leveraging freedom principles - financial freedom, time freedom, geographic freedom, freedom of purpose, and freedom of relationships. Our guest today is Tyler Kastelberg, founder of Bullpen, a company that connects commercial real estate companies with freelance talent. In our conversation, we cover a variety of subjects like the future of work, entrepreneurship, and the hustle and grind culture of commercial real estate. We also discuss Tyler's journey and the idea of real estate as a vehicle for good - not just for profit. Learn more about Tyler and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “People are best when they work on their own terms.”   02:32 Tyler studied engineering because he wanted a career that had high earning potential. After finishing his studies, he landed a job at a bank in San Francisco. However, after a while, Tyler realized that he was very unhappy, so he quit.   Tyler has always been interested in the real estate industry. He decided to start multifamily investing on the East Coast, but raising money was difficult without any experience.    Eventually, Tyler started working as a real estate analyst and took on a few underwriting projects. This slowly turned into a consulting business where he hired freelancers for different commercial real estate projects. Around 1.5 years ago, Tyler created his company, Bullpen, which connects freelancers with commercial real estate companies. “Our only true asset is our time. And that's an asset that is equal amongst wealthy people and poor people.”   08:46 Tyler is an advocate of letting people work on their own terms. He talks about how the current COVID era provides the opportunity to work more independently, and that companies should recognize that people want more freedom in their work lives.   When hiring for roles internally at Bullpen, Tyler likes to candidates a paid opportunity for 90 days on a live project.  After that, they can decide if they want to move forward, having had a hands-on experience with his current team.   Tyler is against the hustle culture in commercial real estate. He hires people to help grow his company and puts his trust in them, which in turn, has accelerated his business over the last 6 months. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   To not compare himself with others. He's always compared his successes with other people but now he's trying to appreciate what he's achieved.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Value. According to Tyler, many people think that purpose has to be huge, but it can also show up at a micro-level. His purpose is to help his clients and their families and start a ripple effect.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That you don't have to be “perfect” to start your own business. Don't wait until you have enough money, skills, or a clear vision. You just have to start somewhere and improve along the way. About Our Guest, Tyler Kastelberg   After burning out as an investment banker and tinkering as a sponsor, Tyler founded Bullpen, the only freelancer marketplace dedicated to the commercial real estate industry. He believes that real estate can (and should) be used as a weapon for good and that people are at their best when they are able to work on their terms. Tyler lives in San Franciso with his wife and newborn son. Your Company's Value Proposition for Recruiting & Retention

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2021 40:14

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we discuss 2 of our favorite topics, recruiting and retention. We talk about where your company fits - from lagging the market to exceeding it - how to determine what's the most important for potential candidates, employees, and future team members, and how to reflect on your company's value proposition to retain talent.   For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “The reason that people join and stay at companies has to do with so much more than just compensation and benefits.” Recruiting and retention can make or break your business. We're in the midst of a historic number of job transitions, and moving into the latter half of 2021, we will likely see transitions accelerate. So today, we'll help you to reflect on your current company's value proposition, and how it can improve to help you both recruit and retain talent.   As we see newer and younger generations entering the workforce, our attitude towards work has to change radically to attract them.   We gathered the 6 most important areas to consider in order to recruit and retain talent. We invite you to rate your company on a scale of -10 to +10, in relation to your competitors and the market:    -10 is being seriously behind -5 is below market 0 is being on par with your competitors +5 is above market +10 is greatly exceeding the market   To determine where you are in the market, we recommend you to talk to your current recruiting team and conduct a competitor analysis process.   Compensation  This is the most obvious consideration and can include base salaries or hourly compensation, different types of bonuses, and/or commissions. Not all bonuses are created equal, as discretionary bonuses tended to be less stable during COVID. Some less common but attractive compensation components are stock and/or equity, and deal or fund level participation. BenefitsOther than the usual health/vision/dental insurance, 401(k), and life insurance, there are some new options that can attract early-career candidates. Some creative options can be student loan assistance, wellness reimbursements, or supporting families with adoption benefits, fertility treatments, and child education support. GrowthThis could be various programs, mentorship, tuition assistance, or creating a path to partnership.  Career path-ing helps those interviewing to envision their long-term opportunity present within your organization, and gives your existing team something to strive for.    FreedomFlexibility in schedule became even more important during this pandemic and it is one of the main reasons we're seeing people leave their current roles. Work from home options and flexible working hours are desired. The new generation of talent also values freedom to be authentic and express themselves freely. EnvironmentWe should think holistically about our environment. There are a variety of different things that relate to the environment - such as the social aspects, the physical aspects, the space we're in, and the overall energy of the office.  Is it ultimately a place people want to and would choose to be? PurposePurpose is being a part of something bigger than yourself and making an impact with the work that you're doing. If you can tie your company's mission, vision, and values and align it with your team members and your prospective candidates, you are going to be that much more successful. Now, go ahead, if you haven't already, give yourself a score for each of those different areas from -10, -5, 0, +5, +10. If you were lagging or seriously lagging in some areas, highlight them. See how much work you have to do in what areas, and look for solutions related to the areas you're struggling with as an organization while leveraging your strengths.   We encourage you to think beyond just compensation or benefits, and really dive deep into the compensation, benefits, growth, freedom, environment, and purpose that you're creating within your company.  Resources for the show:   Your Company's Value Proposition for Recruiting & Retention Guide CEL & Associates Compensation Guide for 2020 https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ https://www.crerecruiting.com/  https://www.creatwork.co/ The Growing Careers and Companies Framework Allison's LinkedIn     Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Growing Careers and Companies Podcast.

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, the tables have been turned and Allison is in the guest seat. We had a great conversation a few weeks ago with Garland Fuller and she offered to guest host today and interview Allison. We talk about Allison's goals and visions, why she started this podcast, and what changes she'd like to see in the CRE industry. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “We are much more the same than we are different. And there's tremendous value in every person, whether they are the CEO, the receptionist, or the janitor.” “We - as a group - really believe in changing our industry for the better and lifting up women and people from diverse backgrounds.”   02:41 Allison grew up in a military family. She went to 3 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 high schools, and lived in 13 different places before she turned 15.   This helped her to become a recruiter, as she could create a community anywhere. She can relate to anyone and has “never met a stranger in her life.”   Currently, Allison is on a digital nomad journey traveling around the country. To document her journey, she's launching her personal website, allisonsweiss.com, in a few weeks.   Allison started a mastermind around 2 years ago where she helps women in the CRE industry to level up, connect, grow, and prosper. “Labor is not free.”   09:09 Allison started the Growing Careers & Companies podcast on June 1st, 2021. Allison has been a recruiter for the past 12 years and has worked in commercial real estate for 7 years. As a result, she really felt the need to make an impact in the CRE community. She wanted to create content that helps others without having to have a one-to-one conversation.   Allison is trying to challenge the status quo in the CRE industry. There are a lot of things in the workplaces that no longer work for people. These issues impact women and people of color more than they do the majority older white male CRE population.    Allison has seen a few changes in the workplace recently.  The next generation is very focused on working for companies with missions, visions, and values that are in alignment with theirs.  The internet and social media help to make companies more transparent. The new generation has their voice and they're not afraid to change jobs.   Solutions for companies where there are a lot of departures or have trouble recruiting: Get as much information as possible about the work environment from the people currently involved in the company and the from the people who left. Work with third-party consultants to collect data. Choose someone who understands your industry, the market, or the environment that you're in. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   It took her 10 years to embrace her own voice, who she is as a person, and realize her unique gifts.     What principle from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework resonates with you the most?   Legacy. For Allison, legacy is about making the industry that she's in and the world a better place. If she can help just one person who helps someone else, then the ripple effect could make a change in the world.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That we are much more the same than we are different and there is tremendous value in every person. Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we talk about relationships. We go through useful tips on how to get better at networking and building relationships. Allison gives us expert advice and insight on her own experience in the relationship-building field. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “The more that I help others, the more that I serve, the more that I show up and give, the more that I personally will receive.” At the heart of all of our interactions, whether we're running companies or growing our careers, is relationships. As many of us are getting back into the conference circuit and face-to-face meetings after spending so much time in the digital world, brushing up our relationship-building skills is important.   We would like to share some expert advice from a couple of well-known industry pros and Allison's own experience in working in the relationship-building field for the last 12 years. First, let's look at Bob Burg's book The Go-Giver. He shares 5 key principles on how to have truly valuable relationships.   Value. Your true worth as a person is determined by how much value you give to others, as opposed to being focused on how much you receive. Compensation. Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them. Influence. Your influence is in direct proportion to how abundantly you serve and help others and put their interests ahead of your own interests.  Authenticity. The most valuable gift that you have to share with others is to offer yourself, your unique gifts and values that nobody else has. Receptivity. The key to giving effectively is also to stay open to receiving.   We have a link to the video overview of the book in this episode's resource guide.   Another great resource is Gary V's Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook book. It has a similar concept but in the social media world. The “jab, jab, jab” means “give, give, give”, and the “right hook” means “to ask”. So make sure you give 3 times before you ask.    In the second part of the episode, Allison shares 6 of her favorite core relationship-building principles. Creating value. Whenever you meet someone, ask yourself - how can I help? Be a thought-leader. Think about what you want to be known for. What specific expertise do you want to share with the world? Prepare for the meeting. Be ready to ask great questions or have good insights, you have to be prepared. Find a common ground. Understand, listen, and ask the right questions to figure out what is important to this person and how are you similar. Be memorable. Strengthen your relationship with the people you want to get closer with by sharing something that utilizes the information that you've learned about them. Make sure that you're following up using the tidbits of information that you've learned about the person. Show up consistently. Reach out at an interval that you think is appropriate for that particular person.   Don't forget to try to put these ideas into practice. We've included a fun relationship-building bingo game in today's episode resource guide. Darren shares great resources and tactical advice for success during this period some are calling the “great resignation.” If you're looking for tips on getting your next promotion, navigating your career path, and taking your journey to the next level, this episode is for you!  Learn more about Darren and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “The person who puts in the most inputs doesn't necessarily get the most outputs. It's about working smarter, it's about doing the right things.”   03:27 Darren started his career in the commercial real estate industry in Melbourne, Australia. Over the last 19 years, he lived in multiple countries and gained tremendous experience within top-tier, international firms. He founded his company CRE Success in 2020, with the goal of providing relevant and modern resources for commercial real estate professionals to accelerate their success.   Darren sees a change in the CRE industry right now. It's not just the “big dogs” or top producers in business who reach leadership positions anymore. It's more about working smarter and being innovative. Emotional intelligence is getting more important - EQ is overtaking IQ as more relevant in today's working world.   Darren's advice for working smarter rather than harder is to focus on your strengths and hire people, or outsource the tasks you're not good at. He also suggests building your brand, networking, and finding prospects on social media instead of relying solely on phone calls. “If you don't do anything, nothing will change. So while it's easy to blame everyone else around you, you've got some responsibility to do something about that.“   13:10 Darren shares his insights on how to evaluate if you should leave your corporate job and start an entrepreneurial journey. Think deeply about how going to work every day makes you feel.  If you don't feel recognized or valued, try to talk to someone in your company and share your feelings. If you decide to become an entrepreneur, surround yourself with like-minded people who can help and support you. Being an entrepreneur requires a different set of skills and mindset. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and share your business with people.   Darren worked in Seoul, South Korea for 11 years, and admits it's not for everyone.  If you're interested in an international role, you need to advocate for yourself - don't be afraid to point out your goals and desires.   Darren's company, CRE Success, is a membership platform that equips commercial real estate professionals with proven client attraction and retention systems so they can save time, earn more, and live the life they desire. You can learn more and take your first steps here. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   The importance of taking responsibility. It's important to take responsibility because ultimately you're the one who is responsible for your own life, not someone else. Also, moderation and balance, as he considers himself as an extreme person.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Vision and Growth. In a business environment, vision is often an internal, not a client-facing statement, but it should be something that a client could be aware of as well. Vision should also be aligned with the company's values and purpose.Darren also encourages us to always think bigger when planning the future, as this will help your business grow faster and bigger.      What do you hope others take away from your story?   That sometimes you just have to do what you want to do.. despite what people around you tell you. Remember that support is available if you need it. About Our Guest, Darren Krakowiak   Darren became a Director of JLL Australia at age 27 and the country head of CBRE Korea at age 35 - he knows firsthand what it takes to achieve success in commercial real estate. In 2019, Darren returned home to Melbourne after a 12-year absence; he experienced the challenges of starting all over again in our industry.   Darren noticed the lack of quality resources to help people who needed it, and the shortage of leaders providing that support.   As he drew on his own experience to motivate himself, he realized that the industry needed someone new to step up, so in 2020 he founded CRE Success.  A warm thanks to Darren Krakowiak for taking the time to share his unique insights and experiences with us. Your Roadmap to Better Storytelling

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we share a simple exercise to help you build your capacity for storytelling. So many of us are anxious about telling our story or answering the inevitable question about where we come from or how we grew up. The following exercise will help you to answer these questions and communicate your story more authentically. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “These are all of the things that make you unique - these little life stories.”  Whether we're trying to grow your career or your company, storytelling is one of those threads that run through our lives. Getting better at uncovering our stories and what makes us unique and learning how to communicate that authentically is a great use of time. Authenticity is one of the pillars of our Growing Careers & Companies Framework which you can download here.   This is an exercise that you can do at home with a piece of large drawing paper and a pencil or in front of a whiteboard with markers.  Let's start by thinking about your life journey as a path. Draw a winding, twisting, and turning line that represents the journey from the beginning of your life to now and off into the future. Make sure the lines don't cross.   Write your birthday at the beginning of the path. Decide on how far you are on your life journey and put today's date there. Now take a look at that path and think about the major milestones. What were the big events in your childhood? Write down all your victories and all your losses along the way. These stories make you unique. Moving forward, think about some “aha” moments that changed the course of your life.  Think about the challenges and the happiest moments in your adult life as well.   After creating this path of your unique journey, hopefully, you understand the landscape of your life better and will be able to communicate all these different milestones, trials, and tribulations better.   All of these stories could be used to connect with and relate to people on a daily basis and build valuable relationships.    We hope today's episode was deeply impactful and it reminded you of some of the beautiful things that you've experienced in your life and some of the more challenging moments that you have conquered and overcome. We'd love to hear from you.  Resources for the show:   https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ https://www.crerecruiting.com/  https://www.creatwork.co/ The Growing Careers and Companies Framework Allison's LinkedIn     Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Growing Careers and Companies Podcast.

    Creating a Personalized Self-Care Plan

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, we have a deep and important conversation about mental health. In this episode, we talk about self-care, identifying emotions, and finding ways to pull yourself out of the overwhelm, anger, sadness, or other challenging emotions you might be feeling right now. For more resources and news visit: https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ “To create your own personalized self-care plan, the most important thing first is to know yourself.“ We all feel stuck, sad, angry, or hopeless from time to time. In order to get out of these difficult emotions, the most important thing is to get to know ourselves. To help identify your reactions and emotions, we put together an exercise that you can download here.   We'd like to share some ways you can get to know yourself better: List out some negative emotions you tend to feel the most often. Is it sadness, anger, stuckness, or something else? Ask yourself: “When I feel (negative emotion), how do I try to fix it? How do I cope with it?” Some people cope by distracting themselves, procrastinating, using too much social media, eating too much food, or watching too much TV. These unhealthy activities tend to make us feel even worse afterward. What do you do? Create a list of your favorite positive emotions. These could be peace, happiness, joy, being present, or any feeling that you like the most. Look for different times in your life when you felt these emotions. What did you do, who were you with? And how could you feel these feelings again right now?  Next time when you feel those familiar negative emotions and start to cope in an unhealthy way, think about your “positive emotions list”. How could you cope in a healthy way and feel better afterward? Don't be afraid to share your feelings with people who care about you. Reach out to a friend or family member and ask for what you need. We hope that there was at least one part of this episode that resonated with you. We would appreciate it if you could share this with someone who is going through a hard time right now.   If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or mental health challenges, please reach out to a licensed professional for help and support. In our wide-ranging conversation, we talk about her entrepreneurial journey built around her passion for travel. We also discuss what you should know if you are traveling with kids, and great destinations to include in your next vacation. If you're ready to go on a vacation after this pandemic, then this episode is for you! Learn more about Dana and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “It's all about creating experiences and designing these bucket list trips.”   02:25 Dana started her travel design company 6 years ago. She helps people plan out their trips all around the world, and started her business in response to her love for travel, and the many friends who asked her for advice in travel planning. Today, Dana curates very specific experiences for her clients and helps them to create life-long memories.   Dana shares some common mistakes that people make when they're traveling: Not buying travel protection insurance or travel health insurance - this can safeguard against unexpected events like illness, trip cancellation and more. Not looking at entry requirements for countries, especially now during COVID. “Through traveling, I have a deeper understanding of people...deep down we're all the same...”   11:26 Dana has three-year-old twin toddlers and shares her experience about traveling with young kids. Be prepared for their inevitable meltdowns  Snacks and mess-free magic marker coloring sets are great for keeping kids occupied Make sure you maintain your routine/schedule as much as possible - including nap time!   According to Dana, traveling has had a positive impact on her children, and they are more open and friendly with people due to their experiences. Dana also became more accepting and more confident in herself after seeing so many different places and cultures. “The trade-off is that you cut out things, and trade them for these memories that last forever.”   24:35 Dana hadn't traveled until she was an adult. She recommends creating a travel budget. There are many ways to travel on a budget.   Many people think that traveling is “not worth it” because you don't get a physical thing for your money. But the memories you make will stay with you for years and years to come.  The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Her worth as a business owner. At the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey, she worked non-stop because she was very dedicated to helping everyone that wanted to travel. This caused a lot of burnout. In the last year, she learned to set boundaries and know her true worth.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Legacy. Dana found her purpose in travel. Her legacy is the memories she helps create for her clients and their families.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That travel is obtainable and life-changing. Your priorities shift, your views of the world shift, and you'll feel more connected to the world and other people.    About Our Guest, Dana Lewis   “You could say I live and breathe travel. Since starting DWD in 2015, I've been able to help over 350 couples and families plan their weddings, honeymoons, and experiences to over 20 different countries. I'm committed to creating unforgettable memories and experiences for my clients all over the world without the stress and overwhelm that can come with planning a trip. I have big goals for DWD, and can't wait to watch them unfold. When I'm not traveling around scoping out the latest destinations and helping my clients plan their dream trip, I can be found in Waco, Texas with my husband and boy/girl twins.” A warm thanks to Dana Lewis for taking the time to share her unique insights and experiences with us.   Resources from the show: www.danallewis.com Her Instagram Her LinkedIn https://www.growingcareersandcompanies.com/ https://www.crerecruiting.com/ https://www.creatwork.co/ The Growing Careers and Companies Framework Allison's LinkedIn   Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Growing Careers and Companies Podcast.   If you enjoyed the show, there are a few things we would love you to do right now:  SUBSCRIBE to the Growing Careers and Companies Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts  Please RATE & REVIEW and let us know what you'd like to hear next Finally, we invite you to JOIN our mailing list for news you can use   Please share this episode with someone you think would inspire.    Until the next time, we appreciate you being here.

Think about your individual mission and what motivates you the most in your life.   VISIONA guide for creating plans, setting goals and objectives, making decisions, and coordinating and evaluating the work on any project, large or small. A vision helps to keep organizations and groups focused, especially with complex projects. It also helps to guide decision-making to achieve the desired result. Imagine the best possible future for yourself. Feel into this image and try to return back to it every time you feel unmotivated or stuck. VALUESValues are basic fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate attitudes or actions. They help us to determine what is important, desirable, or worthwhile to us. Values are the motive behind purposeful action and they help us to align with the ideal version of ourselves. To find out your unique values, check out our previous episode here where we provide a step-by-step guide to determine your values.   INNOVATIONThe process of creating, developing, and implementing a new product, process, or service with the aim of improving its efficiency, effectiveness, or competitive advantage. How could you do things differently? How could you change the game? Identify the things in your industry that are outdated or broken, and think about ways to improve the process.   GROWTHThe process of developing and improving. Sometimes it's a process of adding, but sometimes it's also removing the things that don't serve us anymore.   IMPACTA strong effect on someone or something. The action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another and creating a new outcome - may it be beneficial, harmful, good, bad, big, or small.A good exercise to see if what you're doing has an impact on others is to think about what your loved ones would say about you at your funeral. What are the things you want people to think and feel about you? How do you want to be described?   COMMUNITYThe feeling of fellowship with others, because you share common attitudes, interests, and goals. As humans, we're communal people, so it's important to find like-minded people. Think about how you can help your community.   LEGACYYour long-term impact on others, something transmitted by or received from the past. Something held and transferred to someone as their inheritance, will, or money.Legacy is what you give to other people that impact their lives long-term. This can be in the form of mentorship, apprenticeship, and knowledge. Think about how you can make your particular contribution as meaningful, deep, and long-lasting as possible.   AUTHENTICITYThe quality of being genuine or real. Authenticity is very important because people connect and do business with those that they know, like, and trust.Think about how you show up every day and live in alignment with yourself. Our guest today is Garland Fuller, recruiter, inclusion and equity strategist, and podcast host. In this episode, we talk about interviewing with confidence, how to know when it's the right time to pursue a new opportunity, and how to navigate through returning to work in this post-pandemic period in a strong, thoughtful way. If you're searching for your dream job or struggling to get back to work after the pandemic, then this wide-ranging conversation is for you! Learn more about Garland and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “You have everything you need to get where you're going”   02:57 At the beginning of our conversation, Garland explains the importance of our mindset while job searching. According to her, women tend to have less confidence when they apply for a position. However, succeeding in a job application always starts from believing in ourselves.   Garland's tips to start believing in yourself: Make a playlist that gets you in the zone and listen to it when you want to feel confident. Meditate to calm your nerves and still your inner critic. “Relationship building is a long game. So if you're going in with short game mentality, you're going to get short game results.”   08:11 Garland shares a few tips that can help you to stand out on a job interview or build more reputation in your industry. Preparation. Do your research about the company before you go to a networking event or interview. Have your elevator pitch ready. Don't just think about what you can get but also what you can give. Follow-up. You may not get the opportunity now, but if you keep following up, you may get a chance months later.   Garland is a recruiter in the commercial real estate field. According to her, there are many systems that need to be dismantled. The systemic issues, barriers to entry, and outdated HR processes all have to change. This will be a long journey but awareness is the key. “If your job is not a challenge that you're looking forward to getting done, we need to look at your work.”    17:23 Garland thinks that the future of work will be more flexible. The pandemic really affected the female workforce, so we have to find creative solutions going forward. This could mean more home-office days than before Covid or working flexibly in co-working offices.   Garland talks about how to discover what job actually suits you. Try volunteering, because sometimes you don't realize what you're good at until you're put into a position where money is not a part of it. Volunteer work counts as work experience too.  The Final 3 Questions   39:36   What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   To embrace who she really is and not be afraid to be herself.     What are the principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Vision, Growth, and Authenticity. For Garland, vision means that you're aligned with your own values. You're moving in the same direction and are in sync with what your organization is doing.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That there is no reason for you to suffer and struggle in your life. You have the power to build the life that you really want for yourself and there's always help out there. About Our Guest, Garland Fuller   Garland is a hyper-connector, inclusion & equity strategist and leadership business partner with a demonstrated history of working in a variety of environments: professional services, start up, and agency environments.   She is currently a senior member of CBRE's People Recruiting team based out of their Los Angeles office with 8 years' experience within the commercial real estate industry and over 15 years experience within talent acquisition. She partners with market and divisional leaders to drive results in both recruitment and retention.   In addition, she works extensively with a variety of university student organizations, professional development organizations, employee resource groups and community leaders to build bridges and impactful partnerships.   Her mission is to solve problems by increasing the number of seats at the table and by broadening the makeup of the people who occupy those seats. Our guest today is Courtney Tillia, an entrepreneur, lifestyle coach, model, and a mother of four. In this episode, we dive deep into the mindset behind creating the life and career of your dreams. We talk about inner-child work, reparenting yourself, and feminine energy. We encourage you to listen to today's conversation with an open mind and use some of the thoughts and ideas presented to reflect on your own life. Learn more about Courtney and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “My mission is to release all the things that don't serve us so we can show up as ourselves.”   02:55 Courtney started her career as a teacher, but she didn't feel fulfilled. Five years ago, she ventured into fitness coaching and modeling and eventually found her true passion in lifestyle coaching. Now she helps people to work through their limiting beliefs and step into their true selves.   One of the limiting beliefs that Courtney sees with her clients the most is settling for less. Many people don't feel good enough to fulfill their dreams.   Often we have patterns from our childhood that are the foundations for these limiting beliefs. In order to uncover and get beyond our limiting beliefs, Courtney recommends rebuilding our foundation by working on our mindset.   “Your inner child is this version of you who experienced life, and it has such a huge impact on how you show up today.”   07:24 Courtney explains how doing inner child work can make us see and get past our old childhood patterns.   Practices to work on our limiting beliefs include:  When you're feeling that you're not good or worthy enough, ask yourself: Is this ultimately true? Look at a picture of yourself as a child and sit with it. Think about how you felt at that point. What were your beliefs? Are those thoughts the same now?   Inner work is a continuous practice just like going to the gym, but it gets better and better over time once we start seeing the results.   “When I'm operating from my feminine, I feel that unstoppable energy. I feel powerful, connected, and open. I feel like I'm just receptive to the world.”   25:04 Courtney talks about the difference between masculine and feminine energy. There is nothing wrong with operating from a feminine or a masculine energy space, however, it is important to get connected to our core energy and return to it regularly.   Women tend to switch into masculine energy in their careers. However, if we operate from our feminine energy, we can be more open and connected to our true power. The Final 3 Questions   33:32   What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   To listen to her inner child and do the work continuously.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Growth. According to Courtney, if we don't have a life purpose, we feel lost. If you don't know what your purpose is yet, you can begin by taking steps to get in touch with yourself and see what you enjoy the most in life.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That you can really create the life that you desire. About Our Guest, Courtney Tillia   "Hi I'm Courtney Tillia  A woman. A wife.  A mother. How do I show up for others?   You can download a worksheet here that guides you through this process in detail. What do I stand for?   The first step to define your unique value proposition is to find values that are the most aligned with you. A good practice is to find 5 values that are the closest to you. You can find a list of values to evaluate in the worksheet.   Here are Allison's 5 pairs of unique values as an example:  Growth and Learning Kindness and Generosity Love and Joy Community and Connection Authenticity and Leadership What is my story?   The best way to convey your values and allow people to get to know you better is to share your story. So start thinking about the various different stories that you can share that demonstrate your values and how you embody them.   If you're not excited about going on social media and sharing a specific story about yourself, an easy way to dip your toe into the water is to express your values through other people's stories. You can think about the leaders within your industry or in your life who inspire and motivate you and with who you share your values.    We invite you to think about one step you can take today to start embracing your unique values and share your unique stories with the world.  How do I serve others?   There is a very simple formula that can help you answer this last question and find your own value proposition.   “I help [the market you serve] with [the problem you solve], by [solution you provide] so that [the transformation can occur].”   Here's a sample value proposition:   “I help multifamily owners who are overwhelmed with property management to implement systems and processes so that they're able to spend more time enjoying the dividends of ownership. “   Tying it all together, we invite you to take this framework and implement it. Let's figure out what are the 5 unique values that you bring to the table, what are some stories that you can share about yourself that embody those values, and how do you help others?   If you want to learn more about building your personal brand and finding your unique values, then download our worksheet here. We hope you'll find tremendous value in this exercise and takes your company to the next level. In the summer of 2019, Carrie lobbied Congress about the issue and in the end, Carrie's Law was introduced. This legislation carves out sexual assault and rape from arbitration language in employment contracts.   Prominent companies of all sizes & industries  have supported this initiative, which has the potential to impact the 60 million Americans are subject to these types of arbitration clauses.
