As a younger man Joey Dosik thought he might make a contribution on the saxophone. He loved playing basketball and playing piano too, and he had a sweet, soulful singing voice. But if you asked him he probably would have told you that he was going to be a jazz sax player. That’s what took him out of LA and to the University of Michigan.  Sometimes the stars align and the right people show up in the right place at just the right time. Later on we realize that something special was going on, but in the initial moment it’s just what’s happening. In Joey’s case, he ended up at Michigan with a cohort of other talented, multifaceted musicians (former Third Story guest Theo Katzman, for example). Somewhere along the line, he realized that he needed to sing!  Today Joey is best known for the soulful, romantic songs that he sings with the band Vulfpeck as well as on his solo recordings (he released both Game Winner and Inside Voice in 2018). His Game Winner project ended up merging his two great loves, music and basketball, into a conceptual collection of songs that are surprisingly compelling even for non sports lovers. Inside Voice also operates on two levels, as a classic sounding record that he describes as “deep, sexual, but also kind of silly”. In fact it’s the sense of humor in his writing that keeps his work fresh and modern. As Joey tells it, he’s interested in both honoring and transcending his references. Here Joey talks about maintaining the balance between classic and modern, working with Vulfpeck (“we look up to one another”), the value of practical application, what’s so great about Italian vowels, why basketball is good practice for life, why he never throws away a creative idea, and how he keeps his saxophone chops up. Today Joey chats to Father Rod Bower. In July 2013 the sign outside the Gosford Anglican Church was thrust into the center of Australia’s national conversation when Rod changed it to read 'DEAR CHRISTIANS. SOME PPL ARE GAY. GET OVER IT.  LOVE GOD’ Rod posted the message on the Anglican Parish of Gosford Facebook page. It went viral. Five years on, and a healthy dose of death threats later we’ve seen signs reading anything from “BOO THE BIGOTS. WE STAND WITH ADAM GOODES.” , to “CHANGE LEADER, CHANGE NOTHING. CHANGE SYSTEMS, CHANGE THE WORLD". In recent months Father Rod has published his autobiography Outspoken, and announced his senate candidacy as an independent in this year's federal election. Thanks to an Instagram post from George Evangelista, there's been a lot of talk (and some confusion) about a possible Pinky and the Brain movie. The fan art by is not official and is not part of any upcoming movie. However, this post did bring up some interesting revelations from Kirk Tingblad and Russell Calabrese who directed many episodes of the Pinky and the Brain series. The two revealed on Facebook that they had pitched a live action Pinky and the Brain movie to Jean MacCurdy in the 90s. The movie would involve the two mice turning into humans (played by Maurice LaMarche and Rob Paulsen.) Nathan and Joey discuss this concept and whether or not they think it would have worked. A Blast From Hipsville The Warners are in San Francisco in the 1960s. The trio decides to visit a beatnik club so that Dot can recite some of her poetry. Unfortunately the beaniks find her poetry so square that they boo her off the stage. After finding out a way to make her poetry more miserable, the Warners go back so that Dot can talk about how awful life is! Yakko and Wakko soon realize that they've got to save Dot from spreading misery, after all, their contract forbids it! The Mod Couple The Brain comes up with a way to take over the world once again! This time, he will collect all the rubber from the world's go-go boots and create a humongous slingshot.  He will then threaten to throw the Earth into the sun if the world does not submit to his rule. The two lab mice go off to a concert with the "Fab Four" so that they can steal as many go-go boots from the women dancing. Unfortunately their machine goes haywire and the two are unable to accomplish anything other than giving the "Fab Four" inspirational lyrics for music. Today Joey speaks to Stuart Coupe. When Stuart moved from the northern Tasmanian town of Launceston to Adelaide in the mid-70s he was a representative squash player, with a passion for music, and an unlikely taste for counter culture. It was not long before he fell into the world of music – his own zine roadrunner was a quiet step into a career that would see him come face to face with the likes of Bob Dylan, and Mick Jagger, manage Paul Kelly and the Hoodoo Gurus, and promote acts as varied Chris Whitley, Lucinda Williams, and Harry Dean Stanton. In more recent times he has taken up radio. On Tuesday he hosts Tune Up - a show dedicated to covers - due to that and the many other shows he has hosted over the years he is often referred as the god father of FBi radio.

Today Joey speaks to the owner of Oxford Art Factory Mark Gerber.  When Mark Gerber moved to Australia in 1971 he was a ten year old with a budding appreciation for the arts. His life to that point split between Denmark and the Netherlands. His new home city of Sydney would be the launch pad for global careers, as a musician, dj, actor, model, and promoter all driven by an obsessive fascination culture - the new and the exciting. But it was in 2005 when he took over a former record store three blocks from Hyde Park in the inner Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst that a long term dream of an inclusive, innovative creative space would come to life. It would be called the Oxford Art Factory and over the past 11 years, under Mark’s management, it has go onto become one the most respected cultural institutions in Sydney.

Today Joey speaks to Ravi Prasad.
