Welcome to Morning Prayer from the Anglican Parish of Pasadena and Cormack in Newfoundland Labrador. Today's worship service is led by Rev. Amy Richter, Rev. Joseph Pagano, Gail Roberts (reading our first lesson), and Vitória (Viih) Mahon (offering our music). Instead of a sermon, today we have a discussion about the gospel lesson, John's version of Jesus feeding the multitudes and walking on water.Viih Mahon is known by many in the parish. She is a 20-year-old university student studying travel and tourism and lives in Recife, Brazil. Viih came to Newfoundland first when she was 16 and won a scholarship competition. She lived with Paul and Colleen Harris in 2017-18 and again in 2019. While Viih was here she participated in many activities in the church and in the community. Viih is a strong Christian and recorded these songs especially so we could use them for worship today. Thank you, Viih! Parts of today's service were recorded in Pasadena, NL on the hiking trail by the Blue Ball stream, which is the sound you hear in the recordings. You can watch a video of the service here. After today, we're taking some vacation time. We'll see you again in September! Thank you so much for joining us today, and God's blessings and joy to you.

Episode #78 - The End of Apologetics with Dr. Myron Bradley Penner

The Two Cities

Kicking off our brand-new series on apologetics we begin with the end! Our first guest is Dr. Myron Bradley Penner, the author of The End of Apologetics: Christian Witness in a Postmodern Context (published by Baker), and the Rector at the Anglican Parish of Saint Paul in the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. Penner helpfully kick starts this series by asking what the goals of apologetics ought to be? He draws attention to many problems with the modern apologetic enterprise with their goals essentially being to win epistemic standoffs and show a force of rational domination. He highlights that many of the key figures in Christian apologetics are engaged in a project that is ironically secular, drawing as it does upon a modernist frame in order to attempt to win a battle against modernity. In our conversation, we discuss the problems that occur with reducing Christianity to propositions, as is so often done in this mode of apologetics. In our postmodern age, we are rightly skeptical of claims to “objective,” “universal,” and “neutral” knowledge, and so such an apologetic approach is also out of touch in addition to being so often less-than-Christian. Many of the questions that people are asking nowadays are also not the same ones in which classical apologetics first began. For all of these reasons, modern apologetics needs to die; and raised in its place must be something more personal, holistic, relational, and communal. Team members of the episode from The Two Cities includes: Dr. Amber Bowen, Dr. Josh Carroll, and Dr. John Anthony Dunne.

We continue with another Season of Creation living in the shadow of Covid-19.This sermon is part of the online service on September 13th, 2020, for the Anglican Parish of Gate Pa, Tauranga, New Zealand.Using both the readings set down for the 24th Sunday of Ordinary Time and those for the Season of Creation John suggests this season reminds us of the centrality of safeguarding the integrity of creation in the mission of God. In light of that we are invited to offer hope and an attitude of reverence to action around Climate Change, rather than fear and hopelessness. You can read the notes to this sermon here

Peter Shimmin is a Reader in the Anglican Parish of the Northern Plain. He often finds that life with his faithful dog Jacko has strong parallels with the words of Jesus - today he reflects (with Jacko's help!) on the words of the much-loved 23rd Psalm - The Lord is my shepherd. Bethan Cannell tells her own lockdown story that's brought her back to the Island and interrupted her voluntary work with Operation Mobilisation - the world's biggest floating Book Fair. If you'd like to know more about Bethan's work, take a look at the website www.om.org/en And the Reverend Andrew Moughtin-Mumby - Rector of St Peter's Chuch in Walworth, South East London - has some stark facts about racism, and a challenging message for Windrush Day. On 22nd June, Reverend Andrew led a special service to mark the 72nd Anniversary of the arrival of The Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in East London, bringing Jamaicans and other British Commonwealth citizens from the West Indies, to help rebuild Britain at the end of the Second World War. Today's programme includes his sermon from that service. There's music too - and if you would like to choose a favourite hymn or sacred song, email judithley@manxradio.com

Following on from the two lectures on the Battle of Gate Pā, the Anglican Parish of Gate Pā was very fortunate to have the Rev Dr David Williams FRSNZ give this talk on the Treaty of Waitangi.Last year David was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Royal Society Te Apārangi in recognition of his research, scholarship and the advancement of knowledge in the areas of constitutional law, colonial legal history and the Treaty of Waitangi. In this talk he describes both his own journey in understanding the Treaty, and the changes in how it has been understood by both "crown agencies" and other historians. He looked at why the Treaty came about, what happened during the days around Feb. 6th 1840, how the Treaty came to be signed by iwi around New Zealand, and how it was understood by the British Government at the time and the years following. In essence he suggests that when we look at how "sovereignty" was understood in that time, the English and Te Reo Maori texts say the same thing. That is there was no understanding that English Law would apply to Maori, just the settlers. He wonders what it would look like today if we applied that understanding to our life here in Aotearoa.

Today Joey chats to Father Rod Bower. In July 2013 the sign outside the Gosford Anglican Church was thrust into the center of Australia’s national conversation when Rod changed it to read 'DEAR CHRISTIANS. SOME PPL ARE GAY. GET OVER IT.  LOVE GOD’ Rod posted the message on the Anglican Parish of Gosford Facebook page. It went viral. Five years on, and a healthy dose of death threats later we’ve seen signs reading anything from “BOO THE BIGOTS. WE STAND WITH ADAM GOODES.” , to “CHANGE LEADER, CHANGE NOTHING. CHANGE SYSTEMS, CHANGE THE WORLD". In recent months Father Rod has published his autobiography Outspoken, and announced his senate candidacy as an independent in this year's federal election.
