Rabbi Yehuda suggests writing an entirely new loan document that reflects the reduced outstanding balance, replacing the original document to ensure clarity about the remaining debt. Rabbi Yosi recommends creating a receipt that the borrower keeps as proof of partial payment, serving as evidence that a portion of the loan has already been repaid and protecting the borrower from potential future claims. Rav diverges from both opinions, requiring a new document to be written specifically by the court and pre-dated to the original loan's date. This position is challenged by a braita that allows witnesses to rewrite and predate the document. However, Rav maintains his stance, arguing that witnesses lack the court's authority to create a lien on the buyer's property from the original date. Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Yosi also disagree about post-dated documents, specifically in cases where the post-dating is not explicitly clear. Rabbi Yehuda's position stems from his earlier view that receipts cannot be written, thus allowing post-dating as it cannot lead to deceit. Rabbi Yosi, who permits writing receipts, warns that a receipt pre-dating the post-dated document could potentially enable the creditor to collect on the loan twice. A broader question emerges regarding receipts: Are they applicable only for partial loan payments or also for fully paid loans? The conclusive view is that if a creditor claims a lost document cannot be torn, they may demand payment upon providing a receipt to the borrower. This approach is justified by the creditor's initial act of kindness in providing the loan. A Mishna in Shviit 10:5 distinguishes between pre-dated and post-dated documents. Since documents create property liens, pre-dated documents are disqualified for incorrectly placing liens on lands sold after the document's date. Post-dated documents, however, are acceptable. Rav Hamnuna limits post-dating to loan documents but raises concerns about post-dated bills of sale that could facilitate deception. He warns that a seller could repurchase land before the sale date, and the buyer might then use the deed to prove incorrect ownership. When questioned about why similar concerns do not apply to loans, the Gemara suggests that Rav Hamnuna must not permit receipts. Subsequently, post-dated documents became permitted, and people were also writing receipts. To prevent potential deceit, Rabbi Abba advised his scribes that when they wrote post-dated documents they should add to the document that it was post-dated, while Rav Safra suggested avoiding dating the receipts.

Last January, a repeater group in Harrisburg PA had some special guests at their monthly club lunch – a half dozen representatives from the FCC, and a couple of ARRL officials stopped by to talk about ham radio and GMRS, and answer questions from the assembled club members. Just your average club luncheon.Fortunately, the whole thing was recorded and ended up on YouTube. However, it was nearly two hours long, and some of it was kind of rambling (we're looking at you, K4AAQ). So, we cut it down to just the essense, about 30 minutes worth. We still recommend watching the whole thing – there are some stories and anecdotes that we cut out that are pretty entertaining. Maybe this edited version will whet your appitite for more.

People in Harrisburg and elected leaders are supporting equity and condemning hate this week, following a self-identified neo-Nazi group's march past the Capitol on Saturday.  Both candidates in the 10th Congressional District seat are condemning racism, antisemitism and Nazism in response to the demonstration. New Title Nine regulations offering protection against certain kinds of discrimination went into effect this month. But more than 100 schools in Pennsylvania -- including several in Adams, Berks Cumberland, Franklin, Lancaster, and York counties -- will not be implementing the rule. .  Some Pennsylvania Democrats are putting forth a new framework to expand American manufacturing.  A judge is ordering Washington County to notify any voter whose mail-in ballot is rejected because of an error so the voter can challenge the decision or vote by provisional ballot.  A Pennsylvania ammunition plant that makes a key artillery shell in Ukraine's fight against Russia has managed to boost production by 50 percent to meet surging demand, with more capacity set to come on line.  Climate change is putting Pennsylvania's forests and trails at risk as the weather gets warmer and wetter. Dude, Where’s My Union Health Plan?

We are in the middle of a resurgence of organized labor in the US. From Amazon workers to auto workers and grad students to baristas at Starbucks, everyone is getting in on the action! One of the big reasons workers are so hot to get that union card is because of… you guessed it, healthcare! Today we're going to be talking union healthcare plans – how they work and how workers have managed to use collective bargaining to resist the national erosion of healthcare access. Most importantly, we're going to take a deep dive into why, even with better healthcare, unions have been leaders in the fight for Medicare for All, and how they might save the rest of us from corporate healthcare hell. Our guest Jim McGee has spent his entire career working in union health benefits, starting with the Plumbers and Pipefitters local he belonged to in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. For the past 20 years, he has been the administrator of the health benefits plan for Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689. He's on the steering committee for the labor campaign for single payer healthcare, and he's joining us today from Bethesda, MD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNFBkHBrpUY Show Notes Jim educates us on the two types of union health plans: Unionized workers with a single employer (think nurses or teachers) earn employer-sponsored health benefits much like unorganized workplaces, but the cost and benefit sets of those plans can be negotiated if the workforce is unionized. Taft-Hartley plans are multiemployer plans that are jointly managed by multiple companies and the union within the same industry. The workers pay while they're working to have health insurance when they're not. Taft Hartleys exist in industries where there's a lot of turnover, like the building trades. A worker may have many different employers and many periods of unemployment over their careers. Typically both those options sound a lot better than what your average non-union worker is getting from their employer, though they are still subject to same rising costs and economic pressures as every other health insurance plan. Given that union members are more likely to have health coverage than non-union workers, it's interesting that unions have been at the forefront of the movement for Medicare for all. Many unions come from a rich progressive tradition that looks past the short term to the long term value of guaranteed healthcare for all workers. Jim also shares that the unions that are more exposed to competitive pressure in their environment are more likely to be supportive of Medicare for All. This is especially evident in less urban areas where locals are facing more non-union competition. Jim notes that throughout his career, healthcare has been #1 cause of strikes. Taking it off the table would not only benefit the workers, it would benefit their entire community. Small businesses and non-union employers that offer poorer or no healthcare benefits to their employees often stay afloat on the backs of the unionized employers in their community that do offer good health benefits; this is an inquitable and unsustainable system. Speaking of strikes, graduate student workers at Boston University are on strike right now over healthcare benefits among other things. Not only would Medicare for All take health insurance off the negotiating table (making more room for workers to bargain for pay, safety and other benefits), it would take away a the ability of employers to weaponize health insurance to break strikes; solidarity can crumble quickly when the employer stops paying those premiums at the first of the month. An Insider's Perspective on Haiti - Faith Under Fire When gangs burst into prisons throughout the island nation of Haiti, it launched a cascade of violence and brutality which shook the residents, toppled the standing of government, and opened the doors to crime and murder. Family Life News offers you a perspective on what it has been like to live in Haiti and offer Christian ministry and hands-on development there.  Darren Hercyk is a native of New York's Southern Tier, a current resident of Harrisburg PA, and has directed global development programs for Liberty University. Based on his three year's experience in Haiti, he says the current civil unrest is one event in a long trend of disasters for Haitians -- earthquakes, political upheaval, and hurricanes. This conversation includes the need for immediate relief efforts, as well as the extensive Christian mission trips and longer range efforts. Hercyk says the most effective assistance would have two vital aspects: A focus on long-term infrastructure: housing, schools, hospitals and other public services Is centered on building up the ministries of the local churches in Haiti (or, for that matter, any troubled region) Hercyk also gives us insights on the effectiveness that Haitian churches have had, when so many others entities have failed or collapsed. Even amid the disasters there, he says there is hope for Haiti -- from its Christians. Darren Hercyk has led global relief efforts and Christian humanitarian work, of his own as well as mentoring future mission workers. He has lived in ten nations doing such work, and directed programs for Messiah University and  Liberty University.

Phyllis Cervelli, along with her husband Frank, owners of Holly Hill Show Stable. Phyllis has been training clients in Hunters, Equitation, Jumpers and the Boston University Equestrian Team out of the Hanover Massachusetts location for 34 years. Phyllis has coached the BU team to 18 Regional Championships and the team was 4th at Nationals in Harrisburg PA in 2018.

Wishing you a great year ahead!" If one vowed to not benefit from another, one cannot go into the other's field and pick fruits. But if the vow was during the sabbatical (shmita) year, one still cannot go in the field but one can pick fruits that are hanging outside the field. If the wording of the vow included only food, then one can go into the field. Statements of Rav and Shmuel and Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish are quoted, regarding a particular issue in our Mishna. If the vow was made before the shmita year, and then the shmita year starts, since the fruits then become ownerless, are they still forbidden or are they no longer considered included in the vow? Initially, the Gemara thinks that the two groups of rabbis disagree with each other about whether or not one can forbid something now even when it is (at a later point) no longer in their domain. However, this does not take into account that each group of rabbis spoke about different language used - one had said "this property" and the other "my property." A further difficulty is raised but is resolved. A different way of understanding the debate is suggested but also rejected. Eventually, they explain that there is no debate at all - each group of rabbis was referring to a different case, and, in fact, they all agree! If one's field also becomes ownerless in the shmita year so that people can come into their field to collect fruits, why is one who is forbidden to benefit not permitted to come into the field to collect the fruits? Two possible answers are brought. If one vowed to not benefit from another, one cannot lend the other items, lend money or sell to them, neither can one borrow from the other items or money or buy from them.

Thanks for listening!  Please support the Rob Skinner Podcast on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/robskinner On this episode I talk to Kip and Bethany Harms from San Luis Obispo, California.  Kip and Bethany have planted many churches and have served in churches all over the US.  Most recently they took over a church that hadn't had professional leadership in fifteen years and helped it grow by 50% since they took over.  Listen as they talk about how to: Overcome setbacks and disappointment in the ministry How to keep the passion burning for Christ at all ages What they've learned after planting many new churches How to approach, lead and make grow a church that has experienced division and lack of professional leadership for years More about Kip and Bethany: Kip and Bethany were married in Boston, and sent out on the Honolulu mission planting in 1989 as interns. In 1991 they planted the Hilo church on the Big Island of Hawaii. In 1993 they were asked to move to Los Angeles to plant a Church in Santa Barbara. They also planted churches in San Luis Obispo and helped lead in the East Region until 2003. Kip and Bethany moved to Harrisburg Pa in 2003 and worked secular jobs until 2007. At that time they were asked to return to the ministry and lead a Church planting to Penn State Univ. In 2011 they were asked to lead the Church in Salt Lake City. In 2016 They moved to help the work in Los Angeles. Then in 2018 They were asked to lead the church in San Luis Obispo. Kip and Bethany have two sons and one daughter, all are married. They are expecting their first grand baby girls in December.
