I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 1st of May, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Malachi 3:16: “So a book of remembrance was written before HimFor those who fear the LordAnd who meditate on His name.”Then we go straight to the Gospel of Mark 16:7: ”But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.” Jesus remembers your name, my dear friend. It doesn't matter what you have done or haven't done, He still knows you by name because He created you in His own image. There is nothing sweeter than to hear the mention of your own name. Come on now, be honest, it is lovely when somebody says, “Hello John, Hello Mary, how are you?” You think to yourself, “he remembered my name”, “she remembered my name”, and Jesus tells us this morning that He has got a book of remembrance. Your name is in that book, the Lamb's Book of Life - nothing sweeter!Peter, the big fisherman, was always changing feet. He was like a bull in a china shop. I tend to be a bit like that myself and get into trouble, but the Lord loved Peter so much. Even though Peter dropped the ball, even though Peter denied the Lord three times and he had just said a few hours before, “I will die for You” but he denied Him. He even blasphemed the Bible says, he swore, ‘I don't even know Him” and yet the Lord Jesus knew that when the disciples were told to go down to Galilee and there Jesus would meet them all, He knew that Peter would not come because he was so broken. He had let the Lord down. “Tell the disciples—and Peter, I will see them in Galilee.” The Lord is saying to you the very same thing. “Tell Joe, tell Barnabas, tell Mark, I will see them in Heaven.” Today is a great day. Jeremiah 1:5 in the Amplified Bible is even more confirmation: “Before I formed you in the womb (in other words, before you were conceived in your mother's womb, Jesus says) I knew you [and approved of you as My chosen instrument], And before you were born I consecrated you [to Myself as My own]; I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”That's how much He loves you. He knows you! Speak to Him today!Jesus bless you and goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 7th of January, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Romans 1:21: “…became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” We are talking about vain imaginations, thinking things that aren't true. Then we go to 2 Corinthians 10:5: “…casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,…”Oh my dear friend, we really need to be careful what we are thinking about. What am I talking about? We get an attitude against somebody because when we drove past them on our way to work and we waved to them, they did not respond, so we thought, “Oh, they are too good to speak to a humble person like me!” Okay, but what actually happened was, the sun was in their eyes and they didn't see you. And that other time, you were in the shops and greeted that man who was walking right in front of you, “Hello John,” and he never responded but what you don't realise is, John left his hearing aids at home and he can't hear too well, so he never heard a word you said.I really want to say to you that we need to capture those vain imaginations because they pull you down and start arguments and thoughts that have no foundation, no meaning at all, just the devil trying to cause trouble. So I want to say to you today, read books that are solid, that are encouraging, that are true. Watch movies that have solid backgrounds. Don't watch rubbish, don't make your mind like a garbage pit but rather think about things that are pure and good and what the Lord says about you and your neighbour, and you will live a much more pleasant and positive life for Jesus Christ.God bless you and goodbye.

The Summer of Spielberg continues as Laci and Matt were able to buckle their seatbelts in time for their helicopter to land on Isla Nublar, where they meet up with AJ & Kristie from the In Love With Horror podcast to talk about Jurassic Park (1993). The four team up for a rollicking podcast so good it'll have you shouting “Hello John!” at total strangers.   First of all, this famous action/horror/sci-fi/disaster epic has like 50 incredible lines of dialogue! So we just spend some time saying these lines at each other. But eventually we get into it, talking about the history of Michael Crichton's novel and its adaptation by Steven Spielberg. Then we take a close look at the movie, wondering just how bad of a boss John Hammond must be and what exactly is the nature of his relationship with Ian Malcolm.   Also, apparently John Hammond was originally intended to sing a song explaining how Jurassic Park works? Instead they did the Mr. DNA thing, but we would love to hear that song. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, it's the 11th of June, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of Mathew 1:25: “And he called His name Jesus.” Now we don't often hear much about Joseph, the country carpenter, but I want to tell you, he fulfilled a major role in this Bible. The Lord used him to name the Son of God, Jesus, yes, the Saviour of the world. I want to say to you today that it is very important to remember a person's name. You know what its like when when somebody comes up to you and says, ”Hello brother, hello sister.” They've forgotten your name, but it's so nice, isn't it, when somebody comes up and says, ”Hello John, I haven't seen you for years”, and he says, ”And you still remember my name?” “Of course I do. We went to school together.”The importance of a name can be encouraging, it can break down, or it can build up. Unfortunately, the name of Jesus can be used as a swear word or with great respect. I want to tell you a little story. There was a rough man who worked on the railways. He was a guard on the railways, and he was working in the yard one day and he had given his life to the Lord just a few months before, and his friends used to mock him and say,” You won't last.” “Oh!” He said, ”I will. That name saved me, the name of Jesus, the most beautiful name I've ever heard in my life.” One day, he was working in the yards where they were shunting trucks, rail trucks back and forwards, and the driver of the train was way up in front and the guard was standing at the back, and he was waving the driver on for the connection of the two carriages when he got his hand trapped in between the two carriages, and it crushed his hand and he let out a tremendous swear-word. He used the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in a manner of disrespect completely. His friends were all standing around him, they were shattered. This poor man was trapped between the two carriages. Eventually, they managed to get the train to move forward and they took him out, called the ambulance, his hand was just a bloody mess. He was on his knees as the ambulance driver came to call him, ”Let's go to the hospital.” He said, ”Just wait, please. Wait!” And right there, in front of all his friends, he repented. He said, ”Lord, please forgive me for using your name as a swear word.” After he had done that he said, ”Now, you can take me to the hospital.”I want to say to you today, be very careful that you never use the name of our beloved Jesus, the Saviour of the world, in a manner which is unfitting. It cuts me to the quick when I hear a man using the name of my beloved Saviour as a swear word. Don't do that. Let's love Him today. Let's respect Him by the way in which we act. and most of all, the way in which we talk.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day. Goodbye

Among the missing persons cases online sleuth Todd Matthews followed were that of two boys from the same family who vanished 25 years apart. He was shocked to receive a call from a man who thought he might be Phillip Steven Brandenburg, the baby who went missing in 1974.Todd determined Steve Patterson was indeed the John Doe they'd been searching for and helped him reconnect with the mother he never knew. Sandi Brandenburgh claimed the underground adoption was brokered by her husband. Soon after, Franklin Floyd disappeared with Sandi's oldest daughter and lived on the run with her for years. Authorities would not tie all these threads together until three more people were dead or missing. From iHeartMedia, Revelations Entertainment, First and Last Productions, and Neon Hum Media, comes "Hello, John Doe." We hear Todd work with Steve to learn more about where he came from, though the answers are discouraging. It also guides listeners through the connections to the Sharon Marshall and Michael Hughes cases and Todd's efforts to reunite a family torn apart by tragedy.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "HELLO, JOHN DOE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. Today's story is about a band, a song, and a brush with fame that's more cringe than cool. Thirty years ago, Bloomington danced to the electronic beats of Situation Grey, a college band known more for their covers than cutting-edge originality. Their lead singer—one of our hosts—dreamed of being an indie music maestro, but instead became the king of campus karaoke. Then, one fateful night in the early '90s, some indie rock royalty walked in. What followed was not the stuff of dreams, but the kind of anecdote you reluctantly share at parties. We're talking about the kind of story that gets trotted out at every party, the one guaranteed to elicit a polite chuckle and a sympathetic head tilt. Fast-forward three decades, and that same celebrity brings the story full circle with a digital-age jab that reignites a moment our singer wishes he could forget. In this episode, we peel back the layers of a memory marinated in both mortification and time, exploring the unexpected ways our past populates our present. Stay tuned, as we dissect the enduring echo of fifteen  minutes of shame that lasted thirty years. WE HAVE MERCH! Designed by Chris Mott and sponsored by badknees. Check it out! Puppet sex, kidnapping, murder and a stupidly dangerous plan that takes them into the lion's den.” (thanks GoingMetal799!) “It's reunion time, and our crew(s) are making some new friends, but of course things don't go smoothly. Pick a shirt that suits you and growl like a Luxan as we uncover a traitor!” (thanks Nazzy!) “Not the reunion anyone expected, but at least someone gets lucky during a game of 'who done it' well until they get dumped ...then kidnapped.” (thanks Lucy!) “The crew plays a high-stakes game of Werewolf when parallel versions of themselves arrive unexpectantly. There's azure androgeny, froggy fragrance, and slapstick surgery. Old habits Die Hard and someone manages to Roshambo themself. Thrillingly, The Thing makes an appearance to invite us all to a Naked Lunch. ” (thanks Jon Bunger!) “The crew has guests, but it's not long before someone starts killing them off in a real life interstellar game of cluedo, maybe a game of operation might help diffuse diffuse situation? Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career

Originally posted in Marine Corps Gazette, September 2007 BURIAL AT SEA….. BY LT COL GEORGE GOODSON, USMC (RET) In my 76th year, the events of my life appear to me, from time to time, as a series of vignettes. Some were significant; most were trivial. War is the seminal event in the life of everyone that has endured it. Though I fought in Korea and the Dominican Republic and was wounded there, Vietnam was my war.       Lt. Col. George Goodson (Ret) and family Now 42 years have passed, and thankfully, I rarely think of those days in Cambodia , Laos, and the panhandle of North Vietnam where small teams of Americans and Montagnards fought much larger elements of the North Vietnamese Army. Instead I see vignettes: some exotic, some mundane: *The smell of Nuc Mam *The heat, dust, and humidity *The blue exhaust of cycles clogging the streets *Elephants moving silently through the tall grass *Hard eyes behind the servile smiles of the villagersBeauty and the Beast streaming *Standing on a mountain in Laos and hearing a tiger roar *A young girl squeezing my hand as my medic delivered her baby *The flowing Ao Dais of the young women biking down Tran Hung Dao AND…….. *My two years as Casualty Notification Officer in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland It was late 1967. I had just returned after 18 months in Vietnam.  Casualties were increasing. I moved my family from Indianapolis to Norfolk, rented a house, enrolled my children in their fifth or sixth new school, and bought a second car. A week later, I put on my uniform and drove 10 miles to Little Creek, Virginia. I hesitated before entering my new office. Appearance is important to career Marines. I was no longer, if ever, a poster Marine. I had returned from my third tour in Vietnam only 30 days before. At 5'9″, I now weighed 128 pounds, 37 pounds below my normal weight. My uniforms fit ludicrously, my skin was yellow from malaria medication, and I think I had a twitch or two. I straightened my shoulders, walked into the office, looked at the nameplate on a Staff Sergeant's desk and said, “Sergeant Jolly, I'm Lieutenant Colonel Goodson. Here are my orders and my Qualification Jacket.” Sergeant Jolly stood, looked carefully at me, took my orders, stuck out his hand; we shook and he asked, “How long were you there, Colonel?” I replied “18 months this time.” Jolly breathed, “You must be a slow learner Colonel.” I smiled. Jolly said, “Colonel, I'll  show you to your office and bring in the Sergeant Major. I said, “No, let's just go straight to his office.” Jolly nodded, hesitated, and lowered his voice, “Colonel, the Sergeant Major. He's been in this job two years. He's packed pretty tight. I'm worried about him.” I nodded. Jolly escorted me into the Sergeant Major's office. “Sergeant Major, this is Colonel Goodson, the new Commanding Office. The Sergeant Major stood, extended his hand and said, “Good to see you again, Colonel.” I responded, “Hello Walt, how are you?” Jolly looked at me, raised an eyebrow, walked out, and closed the door. I sat down with the Sergeant Major. We had the obligatory cup of coffee and talked about mutual acquaintances. Walt's stress was palpable. Finally, I said, “Walt, what the h-ll's wrong?” He turned his chair, looked out the window and said, “George, you're going to wish you were back in Nam before you leave here. I've been in the Marine Corps since 1939. I was in the Pacific 36 months, Korea for 14 months, and Vietnam for 12 months. Now I come here to bury these kids. I'm putting my letter in. I can't take it anymore.” I said, “Okay Walt. If that's what you want, I'll endorse your request for retirement and do what I can to push it through Headquarters Marine Corps.” Sergeant Major Walt Xxxxx retired 12 weeks later. He had been a good Marine for 28 years, but he had seen too much death and too much suffering. He was used up. Over the next 16 months, I made 28 death notifications, conducted 28 military funerals, and made 30 notifications to the families of Marines that were severely wounded or missing in action. Most of the details of those casualty notifications have now, thankfully, faded from memory. Four, however, remain. MY FIRST NOTIFICATION………… My third or fourth day in Norfolk, I was notified of the death of a 19 year old Marine. This notification came by telephone from Headquarters Marine Corps. The information detailed: *Name, rank, and serial number. *Name, address, and phone number of next of kin. *Date of and limited details about the Marine's death. *Approximate date the body would arrive at the Norfolk Naval Air  Station. *A strong recommendation on whether the casket should be opened or closed. The boy's family lived over the border in North Carolina, about 60 miles away. I drove there in a Marine Corps staff car. Crossing the state line into North Carolina , I stopped at a small country store / service station / Post Office. I went in to ask directions. Three people were in the store. A man and woman approached the small Post Office window. The man held a package. The Store owner walked up and addressed them by name, “Hello John. Good morning Mrs. Cooper.” I was stunned. My casualty's next-of-kin's name was John Cooper! I hesitated, then stepped forward and said, “I beg your pardon. Are you Mr. and Mrs. John Cooper of (address.) The father looked at me – I was in uniform – and then, shaking, bent at the waist, he vomited. His wife looked horrified at him and then at me. Understanding came into her eyes and she collapsed in slow motion. I think I caught her before she hit the floor. The owner took a bottle of whiskey out of a drawer and handed it to Mr. Cooper who drank. I answered their questions for a few minutes. Then I drove them home in my staff car. The store owner locked the store and followed in their truck. We stayed an hour or so until the family began arriving. I returned the store owner to his business. He thanked me and said, “Mister, I wouldn't have your job for a million dollars.” I shook his hand and said; “Neither would I.” I vaguely remember the drive back to Norfolk. Violating about five Marine Corps regulations, I drove the staff car straight to my house.  I sat with my family while they ate dinner, went into the den, closed the door, and sat there all night, alone. My Marines steered clear of me for days. I had made my first death notification THE FUNERALS………. Weeks passed with more notifications and more funerals. I borrowed Marines from the local Marine Corps Reserve and taught them to conduct a military funeral: how to carry a casket, how to fire the volleys and how to fold the flag. When I presented the flag to the mother, wife, or father, I always said, “All Marines share in your grief.” I had been instructed to say, “On behalf of a grateful nation….” I didn't think the nation was grateful, so I didn't say that. Sometimes, my emotions got the best of me and I couldn't speak. When that happened, I just handed them the flag and touched a shoulder. They would look at me and nod. Once a mother said to me, “I'm so sorry you have this terrible job.” My eyes filled with tears and I leaned over and kissed her. ANOTHER NOTIFICATION………. Six weeks after my first notification, I had another. This was a young PFC. I drove to his mother's house. As always, I was in uniform and driving a Marine Corps staff car. I parked in front of the house, took a deep breath, and walked towards the house. Suddenly the door flew open, a middle-aged woman rushed out. She looked at me and ran across the yard, screaming “No! No! No! No!! I hesitated. Neighbors came out. I ran to her, grabbed her, and whispered stupid things to reassure her. She collapsed. I picked her up and carried her into the house.  Eight or nine neighbors followed. Ten or fifteen minutes later, the father came in followed by ambulance personnel. I have no recollection of leaving.Watch Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download The funeral took place about two weeks later. We went through the drill. The mother never looked at me. The father looked at me once and shook his head sadly. ANOTHER NOTIFICATION………. One morning as I walked into the office, the phone was ringing.  Sergeant Jolly held the phone up and said, “You've got another one, Colonel.” I nodded, walked into my office, picked up the phone, took notes, thanked the officer making the call and hung up. Jolly, who had listened, came in with a special telephone directory that translates telephone numbers into the person's address and place of employment. The father of this casualty was a longshoreman. He lived a mile from my office. I called the Longshoreman's Union Office and asked for the business manager. He answered the phone, I told him who I was, and asked for the father's schedule. The business manager asked, “Is it his son?” I said nothing. After a moment, he said, in a low voice, “Tom is at home today.” I said, “Don't call him. I'll take care of that.” The business manager said, “Aye, Aye Sir,” and then explained, “Tom and I were Marines in WWII.” I got in my staff car and drove to the house. I was in uniform. I knocked and a woman in her early forties answered the door. I saw instantly that she was clueless. I asked, “Is Mr. Smith home?” She smiled pleasantly and responded, “Yes, but he's eating breakfast now.  Can you come back later?” I said, “I'm sorry. It's important. I need to see him now.” She nodded, stepped back into the beach house and said, “Tom, it's for you.” A moment later, a ruddy man in his late forties, appeared at the door. He looked at me, turned absolutely pale, steadied himself, and said, “Jesus Christ man, he's only been there three weeks!” Months passed. More notifications and more funerals. Then one day while I was running, Sergeant Jolly stepped outside the building and gave a loud whistle, two fingers in his mouth and held an imaginary phone to his ear. Another call from Headquarters Marine Corps. I took notes, said, “Got it.” and hung up. I had stopped saying “Thank You” long ago. Jolly, “Where?” Me, “Eastern Shore of Maryland . The father is a retired Chief Petty Officer. His brother will accompany the body back from Vietnam.” Jolly shook his head slowly, straightened, and then said, “This time of day, it'll take three hours to get there and back. I'll call the Naval Air Station and borrow a helicopter. And I'll have Captain Tolliver get one of his men to meet you and drive you to the Chief's home.” He did, and 40 minutes later, I was knocking on the father's door. He opened the door, looked at me, then looked at the Marine standing at parade rest beside the car, and asked, “Which one of my boys was it, Colonel?” I stayed a couple of hours, gave him all the information, my office and home phone number and told him to call me, anytime. He called me that evening about 2300 (11:00 PM). “I've gone through my boy's papers and found his will. He asked to be buried at sea. Can you make that happen?” I said, “Yes I can, Chief. I can and I will.” My wife who had been listening said, “Can you do that?” I told her, “I have no idea. But I'm going to die trying.” I called Lieutenant General Alpha Bowser, Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic, at home about 2330, explained the situation, and asked, “General, can you get me a quick appointment with the Admiral at Atlantic Fleet Headquarters?” General Bowser said,” George, you be there tomorrow at 0900. He will see you. I was and the Admiral did. He said coldly, “How can the Navy help the Marine Corps, Colonel.” I told him the story. He turned to his Chief of Staff and said, “Which is the sharpest destroyer in port?” The Chief of Staff responded with a name. The Admiral called the ship, “Captain, you're going to do a burial at sea. You'll report to a Marine Lieutenant Colonel Goodson until this mission is completed.” He hung up, looked at me, and said, “The next time you need a ship, Colonel, call me. You don't have to sic Al Bowser on me.” I responded, “Aye Aye, Sir” and got out of his office in a hurry. I went to the ship and met with the Captain, Executive Officer, and the Senior Chief. Sergeant Jolly and I trained the ship's crew for four days. Then Jolly raised a question none of us had thought of. He said, “These government caskets are air tight. How do we keep it from floating?” All the high priced help including me sat there looking dumb. Then the Senior Chief stood and said, “Come on Jolly. I know a bar where the retired guys from World War II hang out.” They returned a couple of hours later, slightly the worse for wear, and said, “It's simple; we cut four 12″ holes in the outer shell of the casket on each side and insert 300 lbs. of lead in the foot end of the casket. We can handle that, no sweat.” The day arrived. The ship and the sailors looked razor sharp. General Bowser, the Admiral, a US Senator, and a Navy Band were on board. The sealed casket was brought aboard and taken below for modification. The ship got underway to the 12-fathom depth. The sun was hot. The ocean flat. The casket was brought aft and placed on a catafalque. The chaplain spoke. The volleys were fired. The flag was removed, folded, and I gave it to the father. The band played “Eternal Father Strong to Save.” The casket was raised slightly at the head and it slid into the sea. The heavy casket plunged straight down about six feet. The incoming water collided with the air pockets in the outer shell. The casket stopped abruptly, rose straight out of the water about three feet, stopped, and slowly slipped back into the sea.  The air bubbles rising from the sinking casket sparkled in the in the sunlight as the casket disappeared from sight forever. The next morning I called a personal friend, Lieutenant General Oscar Peatross, at Headquarters Marine Corps and said, “General, get me out of here. I can't take this anymore.” I was transferred two weeks later. I was a good Marine but, after 17 years, I had seen too much death and too much suffering. I was used up. Vacating the house, my family and I drove to the office in a two-car convoy. I said my goodbyes. Sergeant Jolly walked out with me. He waved at my family, looked at me with tears in his eyes, came to attention, saluted, and said, “Well done, Colonel. Well done.” I felt as if I had received the Medal of Honor!

Background (3:15) John Walker created by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary in Captain America #323 (November 1986) Began as Super Patriot - a patriotic villain who served as a foil to Steve Rogers John was former military, who received treatments that gave him superhero abilities from the Power Broker - originally worked as a wrestler, before his manager convinced him being a hero was more lucrative Used staged “attacks” to undermine credibility of Steve in an effort to replace him as the premier patriotic hero - said Steve was too old and liberal to adequately represent America When Steve resigned from serving as Captain America after clashing with the Commission on Superhero Activities, he was replaced with John John became the new Captain America, and his friend Lemar was Bucky/Battlestar - identity outed by former associates, resulting in his parents being murdered by a militia he fought, which drove him more insane, causing the Commission to rethink giving him the Cap mantle After a battle with the resurrected Red Skull, the Commission recalls Walker and reinstates Steve Rogers - Walker was presumed dead after a staged assassination, and given a new identity of Jack Daniels - now serving as US Agent Joins the West Coast Avengers as the eyes & ears for the Commission, and rubs his teammates the wrong way, especially Hawkeye When the team is disbanded, he joins Force Works set up by Tony Stark - once again butts heads with Clint Barton, but they later come to respect each other Serves as the Commission’s head of the STARS team, but bristles at having to have his ex-girlfriend Kali Vries as his lieutenant Joins the New Invaders and serves alongside Jim Hammond, Union Jack, and Blazing Skull During/after Civil War, appointed as the US liaison to Omega Flight, and he doesn’t appreciate that role Loses an arm and leg after Nuke attacks him with a spear during Seige - his limbs are restored by the Venom symbiote while working with the Dark Avengers Fought Sam Wilson when Sam became Captain America - evil Steve Rogers convinced him that Sam was dishonoring the legacy Joined a new version of Force Works Ongoing miniseries written by Christopher Priest introduces a younger sister, and reveals that Mike didn’t die in a helicopter crash, but by suicide Anthony & Doc discuss John’s character Flanderization Issues (18:02) Coping with loss of brother and parents Feels like his values are out of place in modern world, and it causes him friction on every team (24:44) Always serving someone else’s agenda annoys him (35:16) Break (42:49) Plugs for Bedknobs & Broomflicks, Cast Junkie, and Erica Schultz Treatment (44:31) In-universe - Get him out of America Out of universe - (47:06) Former military personnel - use VA resources to get them help Skit (59:21) Hello John, I’m Dr. Issues. - Good afternoon, sir. I’m not military, you don’t have to do all that “sir” stuff with me. - It’s not about military, it’s about respect. You have a difficult job, and I want you to know I’m taking this seriously. Well, that’s good to know. So in the spirit of that respect, let’s get down to business. What can I do for you? - I’m under a lot of pressure, both internal and external, and it’s starting to get to me. I need to figure out how to cope with it. Alright, that’s direct. Let’s start with the internal pressure. What’s creating that? - That’s about wondering what my role is in this world. There’s already a Captain America, and he’s better at it than I was. And as for “free agent” heroes, you can spin a dead HYDRA mook and hit a dozen of them. I’m just struggling to figure out what my place is in all of this. First off, I appreciate that you’re able to articulate these kinds of issues so eloquently. Makes my job that much easier. - When you’ve spent as much time alone with yourself as I have, you kinda have the ability to self-assess. Plus it’s kind of how I view the world - I see a problem, I identify it, and I address it. Now whether it works out in my favor, that’s a coin flip. But I don’t like to beat around the bush. Alright, so I’ll be direct with you. Yes, there are countless heroes out there. Yes, someone will always be able to do what you do, and potentially do it better. But that doesn’t negate your impact. That doesn’t mean that you still can’t do what YOU do. Because, even if someone can do everything you do and theoretically be faster or stronger or more… whatever… they’re still not YOU. Now you have to find out that unique essence, the thing that makes you who you are. Let me ask you this: what’s your big why? - What? What’s the reason behind your heroing? What drives you to put on the suit every day? - Love of God and country. At least that’s what it was when I started. That and wanting to be the hero my brother would’ve wanted me to be. I wish he were here to help give me some advice. I assume he passed, then. Sorry for your loss. - He died in ‘Nam, fighting the good fight. Now, most people don’t agree with whether or not we should’ve been there, but we never back down from a fight. That’s not America. Let’s get back to your reason. Do you think your brother… - Mike. Do you think Mike would approve of what you’re doing? -Beating up the enemy? Sure. Wanting to protect the country? Hell yeah. Getting mixed up in random conflicts that have nothing to do with either of those points? Not so much. You sound like you don’t have much control over that last part. -They don’t call them “contemplative decision orders.” Once in a while I do some stuff that I’m not at liberty to disclose, but that’s only because I get put in those situations that...somebody screwed up. Somebody? -Once in a while, it’s me.  I see. And how does that make you feel? - I don’t like it, but I also know I’m never going to make the perfect decision all the time. I do the best I can with what I’ve got. Now, having said that, there have been some… monumental mistakes that eat at me, and those are the ones I try not to repeat, or try not to get myself in another situation where I could repeat them. So bad that you can’t sleep at night, or so bad that the thought of it happening again means you’ll never sleep again? - Yes. Well, damn. -Come on, Doctor. I’m sure you’ve heard so many stories over the years. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the stuff I’ve been through...you couldn’t survive. I wouldn’t begin to compare my life with yours, or other patient’s stories with your stories. - Not for nothing, Doc, but my entire career… hell, my entire LIFE has been spent in comparison to one person or another. Mike, Steve Rogers, Hawkeye… I’m always following someone or other, and always asking and being asked what it’s like to step into their shoes. So comparisons ain’t anything new to me. Then you’re familiar with the premise “comparison is the thief of joy?” Through no control of your own, people have sucked the life out of a new experience. It should be an honor to do what you do. Now...it’s a burden. - It’s not always a burden. Like I said, I was born to do this. I just wish it wasn’t always so draining. I guess that comes with the external AND internal pressure. Ok then, what kind of external pressure do you face? - There’s always some bureaucrat giving me orders, somebody who wants “the good soldier” on their team. And I get it. I’m tough and they want the symbolism of the one-time Captain America on their side. But it gets awfully tiresome after a while. Your motivation doesn’t have to match theirs, as long as YOU know why you’re doing what you’re doing. There’s plenty of models I could use to explain this, but to cut it short, you’re an obliger. -I don’t understand that at all. Nobody has come close to saying that to me. *pause* Is that a good thing, or what? It’s not a good or bad thing. It’s an observation that you’re trying to meet everyone’s expectations, including your own. But it’s not all black and white. I get the sense that if things go sideways -Yeah, I get to that point when no amount of authority is going to stand in my way. So, as always, this is a matter of balance -*clearly irritated* Oh here we go with this woo-woo nonsense. I know that therapy helps. I know I need to take time for myself. I know I should pick my spots. You don’t have to talk to me like I’m in 5th grade about this stuff. I meant no offense. You’d be surprised at how many people don’t recognize this as much as you do. But I don’t mean a 50/50 split. It’s going to change. Let me ask you...between what you want and what others want, what’s the ratio right now? - 20/80. Too much? -What do YOU think?  When’s your next 80/20 stint? -*pause* I don’t think that’s ever happened.  That’s a screwed up see-saw, then. Got some tools to fix it? - I could quit one of my teams, but unless you want to pay my rent, I don’t see that happening. Stop the all-or-nothing responses. You’re old school...take a sabbatical for once. Temporary leave. No weakness in that - I… I don’t know if I can do that. You don’t know if you CAN, or if you WILL? - Same answer. Not even close. Until you recognize the difference, then you’re the Great American Whipping Boy. -Doctors support their patients. They don’t dole out insults. Especially to those that keep their ass alive more times then they realize. If I DO decide to take time off, it won’t be sitting on some beach sipping Pina Coladas all day. Hell, it might be spent finding a better psychiatrist that doesn’t kick a man when he’s doing his best! If your disdain for me leads to your motivation to have a better life than you first imagined, then I’ll gladly be the antagonist in your personal goals. - Whatever. I’m outta here. Have fun pissing in your next patient’s cereal. 099: Share an Observation Instead of Asking a Question

It’s often better to share an observation than to ask a question. It deepens a relationship by allowing people to open up on their terms. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 99. We are just one episode away from turning over our podcast odometer to 100 episodes. I’ve got a special program planned for next week with an interesting guest lined up to join us. But for today, as we say good-bye to double-digit episode numbers, I’ve got something for those of you who want deeper relationships with people, BUT who feel uncomfortable asking questions of others. For new listeners to the podcast, we’ve been talking in recent episodes about asking questions to deepen our relationships with people. Before we get into this though, I want to share a few responses I received from listeners to a question I raised a few weeks ago. Namely, “What else do you do when you listen to podcasts?” Podcasts are great to listen to while doing something else, and I thought our listeners would be interested in know what that “something else” is for each of us. Listener responses A listener from England wrote, “Two things for me: peeling or chopping vegetables at the kitchen table or (most preferred) having a good cup of Yorkshire tea and just listening as I enjoy. (Now those two things go together well!)” A missionary from the Balkan countries of Eastern Europe said: “I follow about 6-8 podcasts regularly and usually listen when I am at home alone (or when my children are sleeping) and I am cleaning the house, cooking, or folding laundry. Makes a sort of boring, mundane chore quite enjoyable for me!” Finally, Linda, a retired missionary and listener from North Carolina wrote: "Hello John, Sometimes I exercise on my indoor exercise bike while listening to the [your] podcast while other times I go outside and take a walk. Other times I ‘set you’ on the kitchen counter to listen while I fix breakfast. You seem to show up in different ways!" Thank you for those responses. I’d love to hear from more of you as to what you typically do while listening to podcasts. Now on to today’s show. It’s a solution for those of us who would like to go deeper in our relationships with people, but without relying just on asking questions to get there. So keep listening. Caution with asking questions As much as we’ve talked about the power of asking questions, there are a few caveats to this skill. It goes without saying that questions to deepen a relationship do not evoke one-word answers. Yes or no. it also goes without saying that in some cultures around the world, asking questions of each other is offensive. So be careful. Questions asked too quickly, and too often, can put the other person on the defensive and back them into a corner. So slow down. Some people need time to process a question they’re asked. Allow for periods of silence. Questions, when used improperly, can be a form of control. They can take people where they don’t want to go, and you end up alienating people from yourself. We sometimes ask questions when we are really making a statement. Avoid doing this. It’s not being honest and can come across as being controlling. So instead of asking, “Aren’t you going to take the garbage out tonight,” say instead, “please take the garbage out tonight.” Rather than asking a question, try this instead Instead of asking a question, share an observation. An observation is a deeper form of engagement than a question. This is the O - Observe, in O.R.A. Observe-Remember-Ask It’s a big picture skill. More difficult, in my opinion, than the other two elements of ORA. More difficult than Remember or Ask How do you make an observation? Act as a mirror. Mirrors reflect reality Reflect back emotions you see in the other person: “You seem upset today.” Reflect back themes and patterns you observe: “I noticed that whenever I ask you about where you are from, your eyes light up” “It seems to me like … “you’ve got something on your mind that is troubling you.” Share reflective statements, “I wonder statements.” : “I wonder what it must be like to always feel you have to defend yourself.” A real-life example The time Janet shared an observation when she said, “I don’t think you’re spending enough time with the kids.” She could have asked a question instead, “Why don’t you spend more time with the kids?” or “When are you going to spend more time with the kids?” The observation she shared was much more powerful. It wasn’t a job, a directive, an order. It wasn’t even a request. It can be very affirming and encouraging to hear the observations of another person. Where all too close to what is going on in our life. “I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen.”~ John Steinbeck So what does all this mean for YOU? How can you use what you’ve heard today to improve the relationships in YOUR life? Here are a few ideas: Instead of asking: share an observation instead: "Why are you angry," becomes  "You seem angry." Instead of "When are you going to clean your office?, instead say, I’ve noticed the clutter in your office has reappeared. Rather than "Who were you talking to on the phone? ", try sharing an observation, You seemed pretty animated when you were on that phone call. "Why are you so sad today? " would be better put, You look sad to me. "What are you worried about?" can be better stated,  It seems to me like you’re troubled about something. I wonder what it is. Instead of asking, "What are you so happy about?" share an observation like this, You sure seem in a good mood today. Use doorknob observations with people who are better at words than you are. “I wonder statements are good for this.” If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode. Experiment with turning your questions into observations. Act as a mirror in the important relationships in your life. See how much deeper your interactions go when you make an observation, rather than when you ask a question. I’d love to hear any thoughts you have about today’s episode. I’d like to hear how trying out this new relational skill goes for you. You can email me at john@caringforothers.org. I may share them in a future episode unless you say otherwise. You can also share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Closing In closing, if you found the podcast helpful, please subscribe if you haven’t already done so. You can also help us to serve more people when you leave a review wherever you get your podcasts. I hope your thinking was stimulated by today’s show, to both reflect and to act. So that you will find the joy God intends for you through your relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Well, that’s all for today. I look forward to connecting with you again next week. Goodbye for now. You Were Made for This is sponsored by Caring for Others, a missionary care ministry. A 20th century scientist time travels back to Ancient Jerusalem in John Fergusson's dual time line mystery King Solomon's Deadly Legacy, a faith-themed story which combines murder, betrayal, and corruption in business with deeper questions of healing and redemption. Hi there, I'm your host jenny Wheeler and today John talks about how he came to write this challenging thriller and what King Solomon might be able to teach us in a time of pandemic. We've got three E-books of King Solomon to give away to three lucky readers.  Enter the draw on  The Joys of Binge Reading.com or on our Binge Reading Facebook page. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Why John is fascinated by King SolomonWhat Israel's early kings can tell usHow John got started in fictionA healing ministry to the nationsThe writers he admires mostWhere to find John online Where to find John Fergusson:  Website: https://johnfergussonbooks.com/blog/ AND www.jfm.org.nz Or johnf@jfm.org.nz Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JF-Ministries-254398031318206/ What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny Wheeler: But now, here's John. Hello John and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Introducing Author John Fergusson John Fergusson: Hi, Jenny. It's good to be with you. Jenny Wheeler: You've written this book, King Solomon's Deadly Legacy. People love to hear what the genesis of a book is and how it came to be. I gather that your time travel novel has quite an interesting story behind it. Could you tell us about how it came to be written? John Fergusson - Time Travel Author John Fergusson: I've been a Christian for many years. I've always been fascinated by King Solomon. At the beginning of his life he obviously loved the Lord and he heard from the Lord and by the end of his life he was depressed, he was writing Ecclesiastes and he'd backslidden. He was committing idolatry, building idols and worshiping idols for wives. I always wondered how the man who is supposed to be the wisest man who ever lived could have fallen into that trap. A few years ago I realized that our Western culture, since the two Wars, has been making the same mistakes. I wanted to investigate that and present it in a way that that would make people think about it. That's been in my mind for a number of years. Then we were in a meeting with my team at church, and the pastor said if something has been in your heart for a long time, it's probably gone. That stirred me to say, I need to write this book rather than just be thinking about it. So it all started. King Solomon research trail Jenny Wheeler: How long ago did you start seriously getting down to writing it? John Fergusson: That was eight years ago. It's taken a long time. I spent five years on research and then having got a few facts under my fingertips, wrote it and then rewrote it. Then I learned how to write, and I tried to get it published and that didn't happen. You know the story. Jenny Wheeler: Yes, I do. You've got someone with a 21st century sensibility, Simon, who's a scientist and he gets catapulted back into King Solomon's time. It's a daring choice to have such a big time travel gap. For those not familiar with the story, I wondered if you could outline when exactly this is, and what the political situation in King Solomon's time in Jerusalem was all about. John Fergusson: King Solomon lived 3000 years ago, more or less. He was the greatest King of Israel at the time, he was the greatest king at the time, anywhere. He was the son of King David who was well known for killing Goliath, amongst other things. This was in Israel and the surrounding kings and kingdoms had all been subdued by King David so they were beholden to Israel. Israel was the dominant power in the middle East at the time,

Steven Butala:                   It's like getting a PhD in whatever and then just going to work at McDonald's. Jill DeWit:                            Right? Jill DeWit:                            That happens. Steven Butala:                   Hey, before we get into it, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community. It's free. Jill DeWit:                            John asks, "I just tried to get the new RealQuest to get data and it tops out at 1,000 units. I reviewed and re-watched Steve's video, but I can't find an option to request more. Has anyone else had this problem?" This is good. There's a little buoy. This comes up before. I'm going to answer some of the responses here and then I'll save a little bit more too on [inaudible 00:01:31]. Steven Butala:                   This is an extremely popular question. Jill DeWit:                            Yeah. Kevin, one of our moderators responds. He says, "Hello John, this is a common question. Log on to RealQuest Pro and click on the upper right hand corner. Click on preferences. In the box about halfway down you'll see a maximum number of records to retrieve per search. Type in the number that you want up to 25,000. I have mine at 25,000 all the time." Here's the reason why. When you're going and downloading the data, that's when the clock starts ticking if you will. The records that you pull, what you're charged for per line. We cap it at 1,000 so you don't accidentally as you're playing around and you're learning, and you're new, and you're just in RealQuest Pro for the first time, we don't want you to accidentally download way too much data and then be stuck paying for it. So that's why we cap it as 1,000. Jill DeWit:                            Then we know too, when we know you're in there, you can get in the back end of that and alter it. You're learning it and you know what you're doing and you can change it to the level that you want. Some people put it at 5,000, some people put it at 10,000. And like Kevin, just leaves it at 25,000 because he just wants to be able to pull whatever he wants. He knows how to do the math when he's doing it and what he's going to get charged. What I was going to say too is, if you go to your new member guide, it's explained there, and then also on landacademy.com, on the little buoy in the, I think it's the bottom right, but there's a little help buoy you can put in there. Steven Butala:                   There's a buoy everywhere. Jill DeWit:                            RealQuest records and the information will pop right up for you.

Today i'm doing a response video to a subscriber that asked: Hello John, I am a big fan of your content and have been following you for a couple of years now. I apologize off the bat that this is not a business proposition, but I do not use social media so this was the only email address I could find to contact you. I know you are a busy man, but i wanted to reach out to you and ask you a more personal question: You are helping spread a message and impact peoples lives positively, and I admire what you do and why you do it. That being said, why do you and other content creators who want to spread a message have ads on their YouTube videos or sell products/books? (Please don't misunderstand me. I fully believe in paying for things of value and am purchasing you book shortly as well). I'm meaning , You don't do it for the money. That's obvious. So what motivates you to still market /increase profits from yours products/services? I'm simply trying to understand the mindset of bulldogs and people more successful than myself. Anyways, keep up what you're doing, it really makes a difference to many people, and I appreciate everthing your content has done for me personally. Best to you. In a nutshell, why a millionaire, someone like me, who is a multi millionaire what to make more money , why ? And this is what we will find out today, that it's not just about spreading a message, but also running a business, being able to support the business and do cool stuff ect ... Money isn't necessary for me, or for my life style. As you know I live a pretty normal life. I'm not so big on buying expensive stuff. Money do get you up on the happiness scale. But happiness doesn't have to be the highest goal in itself. It is about being able to live good fulfilling experiences, experience that demand money . Being able to grow the bulldog mindset, being able to make it support itself and so on ... That's is why I want more money.

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 14, Relationship Skills - Level 4. This episode is the last of our series on the 4 levels of relationship skills. But before we dive into this topic, I want to share some listener responses to our podcast that have been coming in since we started at the end of November 2018. December 19. Hi John, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the last two podcasts specific to joy. It made so much sense to me.     ~ C.M. - Wisconsin December 24. Hello John, Your message is timely for me this season. And I very much appreciate your appreciation of the women in your life! Thank you.   ~ M.J.B. - Wisconsin, the only state in the union with “sin” in its name. December 25. Just wanted to let you know that I have listened to the first five installments of your podcast and was impressed with the professionalism of its production.  I particularly liked #5 The Gift of Joy Part 1.  Haven’t listened to Part 2 yet.  ~ E.L. - Iowa December 28 Dear John, The days of December have whisked by with preparations and then carrying out about 7 major events in my home, work at the orphanage, and one on one visits.  Because of that I have missed 4-7, but am taking a day off today to rest and regroup (tomorrow is the last outreach for us in Dec.)  I will have the great joy of listening to all of them today. Thank you for your faithfulness.  I feel like you are my Pastor.    ~ D.W. I have more responses that I’ll share next week. I would love to hear from more of you about what you find helpful and meaningful from the podcast. Not for my benefit, but more as an encouragement to the community of listeners to the podcast that is slowly developing. Okay. Back to the topic of today’s show. It was just last week a listener ran into my wife Janet and was talking to her about this series on relationship skills. She commented something along the lines of, “I’m not sure which of the relationship skill levels is most characteristic of me.” Maybe you’re wondering the same thing. It’s a useful question to consider, because it will help us know how far we have to go to get to the top level of relationship skills, which is the focus of today’s episode. Here are a few questions we can ask ourselves to determine the level of our relational development: 1. In thinking about relationship difficulties you have, does the thought ever occur to you that the source of those difficulties might be YOU? Do you notice you lack some basic relational skills? Are you even aware that relationships are a problem for you? If you answered “No” to any of these questions you are at level 1, the Unconsciously unskilled (U.U.) level of relationship skills. If you answered YES to any of these questions, congratulations, because you are making progress! You are at level 2 of your relational development, Consciously unskilled (C.U.) You know you are making mistakes in your relationships, but you don’t know what to do about it. 2. If your lack of relational skill does not concern you, and you accept the fact that this is just the way you are, this is where you will remain. Consciously unskilled in your relationships. Your relational difficulties may be so troublesome, that you resign yourself into thinking that things will probably never change. So why even try. On the other hand, if you want to change and want to get better at relationships, no matter how overwhelming some of them might be, you are well positioned to move up to level 3, Consciously skilled (C.S.) You are at the Consciously skilled (C.S.) level when you start to see progress in how you relate to others. You’re not perfect by any means, and the progress may be slight, but in some areas you see real growth in how you relate that is different from how you may have related to people in the past. You may be less critical and more willing to extend grace. You may let other talk more than you when you’re with friends. You may ask people to clarify more often what they mean, rather than your natural tendency to make assumptions. You may have always been a good listener, and you want to continue to nurture this skill. If any of this is true for you, you are at level 3, Consciously skilled (C.S.). As good as it is to be at level 3, there’s an even higher level of relationship skills. Level 4- Unconsciously skilled (U.S.) This is where you are skilled at relating with people and you’re not even aware of it. It’s woven into the fabric of your character. It’s who you are. You may not have always been this way, but over time relating well with people has become second nature to you. You’re kind without thinking about it. You give people the benefit of the doubt as a matter of course. You see your own pride and selfishness rearing it’s ugly head from time to time, and you take action to squelch it. You discern the motives of people without being judgmental. Compassion for others comes naturally for you. You are Unconsciously skilled (U.S.) The $64,000  question is this, How do I become Unconsciously skilled in my relationships? It starts with what I mentioned in episode 13 about level 3 of relationship skill development. I said that to become skilled in our relationships is to listen to 3 different sources of relational wisdom - Listen to our self. Listen to others. Listen to God. When we pour our energies and focus into listening to these sources of relational wisdom, especially listening to God, when we do this well, and do it often, over time, like any other skill we practice, in time our relational skills will improve to the point they’re embedded in the DNA of our character. But it takes time and a desire to want to improve our relational skills. We have to want to. This “want to” is what I mentioned in episode 10, Two Features of Every Good Relationship. Listening to self, for example, is for the purpose of creating a feedback loop to alert us to mistakes we make in our relationships. From this, we can take steps to correct them. For example, do you ever wonder if you talk too much when you’re with friends? I do. I can usually tell later when I replay a conversation in my mind and realize later I didn’t learn what was happening in the lives of my friends. I took up all the air time so they couldn’t talk. I’ll try harder next time to let others have the floor. The more we practice self-editing, we can over time become more unconsciously skilled in our relationships. Listening to others, particularly writers and speakers, and putting into practice what they teach, is a great source of wisdom. Here’s just one example, I find myself applying some of the things I learned in Cal Newport’s book, So Good They Can’t Ignore You - Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for the Work You Love. It is a great book on the importance of skills, and the relative un-importance of passion. He talks about developing a “craftsman mindset where you focus relentlessly on what value you’re offering the world. This stands in stark contrast to the much more common passion mindset which lets you focus on what value the world is offering you.” Newport’s focus ion the book is developing career skills that are valued in the marketplace, but the principles he discusses apply just as much to our relationship skills I hadn’t thought about this until just now, so one could say I was unconsciously skilled in learning from the wisdom and experience of others. As helpful as it is to listen to ourselves, and to listen to the wisdom of others, the most fulfilling and exciting means to become unconsciously skilled in our relationships is to frequently listen to God. I’ll close with a story of how a couple of my friends were unconsciously skilled in caring for me. Hopefully it will encourage you that you too can become unconsciously skilled in your relationships. I call it my Balloon story. I write about it extensively in a memoir I wrote in 2016, THEM - The Richer Life Found in Caring for Others. I’ll put a link to it in the show notes, as well as a link to the Cal Newport book I referenced, So Good They Can’t Ignore You. [story was shared on the podcast] Before I close, here’s the he main take-away from today’s episode, our show in a sentence The more we monitor ourselves, learn from the wisdom of others, and listen to God, the more unconsciously skilled we’ll become in our relationships. Here’s a way you can respond to today’s show: Start with devoting just the next 5 days to applying one or more of the the principles we’ve been talking about the past few episodes. Be directed in how to do so by listening to yourself, to others, or to God himself. Coming up next week I’ll be reading more listeners responses to our podcast so far, and I’d love to hear from you about how the podcast is helping you. By sharing this will hopefully encourage others in transforming their relationships into the best they can be. You can leave your thoughts in the comment box in the show notes, or you can send an email to me, john {at} caring for others, {dot} org.  You can also private message me in Facebook. In addition to sharing listener comments next week, we’ll also look at some concrete practical things we can do to deepen our relationship with others. Quote of the Week We were together. HC's superman just don't get enough love with many hating his superman portrayal. His performance was so forgotten and underappreciated by many with many calling him a bad, bland, wooden actor. Lately, i read that WB suggested having HC to be Tarzan but David Yates didn't want him because of his high profile. I cant help but think of the number of projects he might have missed out on because of his fame or 'infamous' as the cinematic superman everyone in Hollywood seems to dislike or care about. As much as i love him as superman and very excited with the DCEU, but i'm worried for his career. Thoughts? Tom Shotter writes: I listened to your podcast about comic con moving to Vegas and it makes perfect sense. However, do you think comic con is under pressure from San Diego city council or whatever it's called over there because if you move comic con to Vegas how much money will the local businesses lose?SamDean writes: Hello John loving podcast, with Warcraft failing to make the$500,000,000 that needed to break even, does mean future in film fornow is dead. Thanks & May Force Be With You!Dejan Borjanovic writes: Where is Mickey Rourke? He had a long-time absence but then had a great resurgence with 2008's The Wrestler and then Iron Man 2, but now he has disappeared again. Why do you think that is?
