Christopher has written many excellent books on modern Witchcraft, magickal practice, spirit work, and personal transformation. His work has been foundational for many practitioners over the years, and it was wonderful to sit down with him for this conversation. In our discussion, we explored a wide range of topics, including his background with tarot, his insights into developing skills as a reader and practitioner, and of course his experience as a respected teacher and leader within the wider Pagan world. Whether you're a longtime fan of his work or just discovering it, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! My guest this week is Katie Harford Hogue, who joins me to chat about the wonderful album 'Julia Belle: The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project, Vol. 2'We discuss how the project came about, following the discovery of dozens of John Hartford's notebooks, kept between 1983 and 2001, full of as many as 4,000 original fiddle tunes he'd composed. That led to the book - 'John Hartford's Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes', followed by two albums, the second of which we're exploring today.Co-produced by Katie, with Sharon Gilchrist and Megan Lynch Chowning, 'Julia Belle' features a selection of John's original fiddle tunes, as well as some favourite songs, performed by some of the most beloved female artists in the Hartford-inspired bluegrass scene, including Rachel Baiman, Phoebe Hunt, Ginger Boatwright, Brittany and Natalie Haas, Deanie Richardson, Allison de Groot, Della Mae, The Price Sisters, Uncle Earl, Alison Brown, Missy Raines and Sierra Hull. It's a wonderful record and made for a fascinating conversation. Send us a textIn this latest episode, it was wonderful to welcome back John Michael Greer, a prolific author, teacher, and practitioner of the esoteric arts. We dive into the fascinating world of tarot and explore his work with his late teacher, John Gilbert, whose insights and teachings JMG edited and published in The Doors of Tarot. He shares reflections on Gilbert's unique approach to tarot, and we discuss our views of patterns and spreads in readings, how divination can be best approached when just starting out, and what made Gilbert's teachings so unique and impactful. I really enjoyed the conversation, and reading The Doors of Tarot, which I absolutely recommend.Later in the episode, we also shift gears to discuss the fundamentals of mundane astrology—using the stars to explore the patterns of global events. Send us a textIn this episode of Coffee and Divination, I had the pleasure of sitting down with author, tarot reader, and witch Madame Pamita to explore the magic of tarot and how it can transform our lives. “A lot of what I end up teaching with regards to all of music, but certainly improvisation, has to do with becoming comfortable. You can do all kinds of different technical exercises, improvisation exercises, conceptual brain project exercises, all of which serve to help the musician become comfortable and fluid with their musical expression so that they feel free enough to act on a musical impulse or a musical gesture, to respond freely to the moment.”The first year of the pandemic was a deeply creative time for Vermont based fiddle composer and song-writer Lissa Schneckenburger. When everything shut down (including her touring schedule), writing music became an essential outlet. Schneckenburger explains, “I had to write music to process my experience of living through such a difficult time. It was my life line”. The result was what Schneckenburger jokingly calls “overflowing bucketfuls of music” and enough new material for several album releases. The first album, Falling Forward, is a collection of Schneckenburger's original fiddle tunes and two traditional New England songs, released in March 2023.Lissa hired a star powered all female cast of musicians to record her compositions, and Falling Forward was recorded in December of 2022. The ensemble included fiddling producer Katie McNally, pianist Rachel Aucoin, bass player Mali Obomsawin, cellist Natalie Haas, and accordion player Karen Tweed. “These women are my heroes,” Schneckenburger says, “they are leaders in the acoustic music world, and it was such an honor to record with them.” The tunes range from lively to somber and introspective. Many reflect the tone of a riotous fiddle party with floorboards thumping, bow hair flying, and instruments and dancers in every corner. Falling Forward provides music for both meditation and release. Both of which feel appropriate in processing our collective experience as a society over the last few years.During the past few decades, Schneckenburger has made music showcasing everything from traditional dance tunes, to original songs. The latter inspired by her experience as a foster and adoptive parent. Falling Forward has blended her love of traditional music with her love of writing, in her first fiddle forward album release in over a decade. To get in touch with Lissa, you can find visit her website, https://lissafiddle.com/, or find her on Instagram (@lissafiddle), Facebook (@lissafiddle), or Tiktok (@lissafiddle).Choir Fam wants to hear from you! In this interview, host Steve Roby chats with renowned cellist Natalie Haas about her musical journey, her new album ‘Haas,' and her upcoming Sweetwater Music Hall performance with her sister Brittany and musician Lena Johnson. Natalie discussed her unique musical experiences, collaborations, and upcoming projects, offering listeners an intimate look into Haas' influences and aspirations. Natalie shared insights about her early introduction to music through the Suzuki Method and her transformative experiences at the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddle School, where her passion for traditional music was nurtured. She fondly recounted the camp's significant influence on her and her sister Brittany, helping them develop musical careers and form lifelong friendships within the folk music community. As the conversation progressed, Natalie elaborated on her professional relationship with her sister Brittany, detailing how their musical paths, though initially divergent, eventually converged. This reunion led to their album 'Haas,' which features original compositions and cherished tunes from their youth. Natalie discussed the process of writing and arranging music for the album, highlighting how they have grown as musicians and collaborators. She also shared the backstory of "The Volunteer," a track dedicated to their father inspired by his volunteer work in their local community. Natalie's excitement about her upcoming projects was palpable as the interview neared its end. She discussed her new recording endeavors with Alistair Fraser and her sister Brittany and her enthusiasm for live performances. She emphasized the unique joys and challenges of collaborating with different musicians. The interview concluded with a reminder about Natalie and Brittany's upcoming performance with Lena Johnson at the Sweetwater Music Hall, a testament to their ongoing commitment to sharing their music with the world. #BackstageSonoma #NatalieHaas #Cellist #MusicInterview #NewAlbum #LivePerformance #SweetwaterMusicHall

Today's episode is an excellent chat with A.C. Stauble and Isaac Hill, two individuals who are both fellow magicians, permaculturalists, and podcast hosts. I've been a long-time fan of their show, the Plant Cunning Podcast, which highlights connections between herbalism, magic, permaculture, and the healing arts. Isaac is a permaculturalist with over a decade of experience gardening and cultivating a native plant nursery, as well as a Heathen practitioner and author. A.C. is a farmer, herbalist, community builder, and teacher. In today's interview, we discuss developing relationships with the Land and plant spirits, creating the Plant Cunning Conference they hosted this summer, and thoughts on the nature of healthy community connections in our lives. Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas arrived in Portland November 13, a day before their scheduled concert at Alberta Rose Theatre. It was the last stop on their tour and they stopped for breakfast, then planned to see the sites of the city. But the day turned out much differently than the world-renowned Scottish fiddle player planned. They came out to find someone had broken into their car, parked at SW 10th and Taylor, and stole all their musical equipment and suitcases at some point between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.“Every single thing in the car was taken: Two suitcases, a cello and a massive flight case and my violin and a big bag of equipment,” Fraser told KOIN 6 News.“So at this point we are missing the violin, my treasured violin, all my microphone equipment and Natalie's suitcase,” Fraser said. “Most of my luggage and Natalie's suitcase is gone.”Fraser, 68, played that violin since he was 8. He knows nothing else.Support the show

The very first "solo show" of Coffee and Divination! I wanted to speak a little about a topic that's come up with a number with my guests recently: how we relate to our divinatory tools, and also how we might deepen our connections to them. As a Witch who practices a nature-based, pantheist, and animist Tradition, the act of relating to forms of divination, and the Spirits who speak through them, is something I think a great deal about both as a teacher and a practitioner. In today's episode, I share five things that I feel are key to developing healthy relationships in divination. There is obviously a great deal to say on the topic, so this is only a beginning... I am also excited to officially announce the podcast's new Patreon page! To show my thanks to our listeners, I'll be hosting a special Patreon-only Zoom "Coffee and Divination" chat hangout each month, (beginning with a Launch Party on April 1st,) where we can chat, discuss magic planning, and where myself and my rotating guest co-hosts will throw cards or otherwise answer listener questions during the hour... For our Patreon members, I'll also be releasing additional content including monthly templates and spreadsheets for divination, advance notice of guests, extra episodes, and more. Check out the Patreon page to learn more and to sign up! The latest episode is another lovely discussion with author, poet, and scholar Peter Mark Adams. His latest work, "Hagia Sophia / Sanctum of Kronos: Spiritual Dissent in an Age of Tyranny," is a fascinating exploration of the pagan Mystery cults and their diverse survivals in later philosophical traditions, as well as a discussion of the ways in which the construction of the Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) encapsulates the metaphysics of spiritual union taught within the Eleusinian tradition – all in the face of intense persecution and oppression. This week, songs about saying goodbye performed by a variety of artists recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Farewells have produced some of our most powerful and emotional works of art. Goodbye is a theme endlessly explored in paintings, sculpture, literature and film. Music is no different. In this episode, we'll hear songs of farewell written for everything from beloved people, to places, careers, innocence, life, and even a horse. Featured are experimental folk ensemble Jayme Stone & the Lomax Project with Moira Smiley, renowned cowboy singer Don Edwards, the Paul Brock Band with Dennis Carey & Dave Curley, Smithsonian Folkways artists Anna & Elizabeth, Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser with cellist Natalie Haas, Texas swing and bluegrass phenomenon The Purple Hulls, John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Smithsonian Folkways artists Lula Wiles, traditional fiddler Bruce Molsky, folk singer and actor Joe Purdy & friends, and ubiquitous cowboy cadre Riders in the Sky. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Bob Blair performing the traditional song “Who Will Sing?” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Renowned folk musician Aubrey Atwater presents songs about home. Leaving home, missing home, and going home are all themes of Aubrey's segment this week.

Natalie Haas has helped define this new role for strings that I keep talking about--the future of string playing, which I believe is all about being a genuine rhythm player, not just a melody/virtuosic player. Natalie is the consummate rhythm string player, and her 20-year duo with Scottish fiddle master Alasdair Fraser is testament to that. She breaks it down, clearly demonstrates a groove for us, and is a good sport on her segment of Not My Gig, where I quiz the long-time teacher at the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School about...The Valley of the Sun, an early Hollywood western.
