Imagine strategy as something felt, not just written—that's the core of Britt Hogue's approach to leadership. After years in corporate roles immersed in data and KPIs, Britt realized that behind every metric were real people making decisions. As the founder of The Collective Good, she now champions "humanized strategy" for mission-driven organizations, focusing on inclusion and collaboration in strategic planning.Britt believes strategy isn't just about decisions—it's about who gets to make them. By involving diverse voices, organizations create strategies that are not only more effective but also embraced by the people who implement them. Her three-phase framework—listen deeply, prioritize transparently, and communicate clearly—helps leaders foster ownership and alignment, whether in a global enterprise or a small nonprofit. In our conversation, Britt shares a powerful truth: inclusion isn't just a moral imperative—it's a business one. When people feel seen and heard, they contribute more, innovate boldly, and own outcomes. As she says, “Do it for the humans, do it for the business”—because in the end, both benefit.
Presenting Machines Like Us, a Globe and Mail podcast on technology and people. We're a few weeks into a federal election that is currently too close to call. And while most Canadians are wondering who our next Prime Minister will be, host Taylor Owen and his guests today are preoccupied with a different question: will this election be free and fair?In her recent report on foreign interference, Justice Marie-Josée Hogue wrote that “information manipulation poses the single biggest risk to our democracy”. Meanwhile, senior Canadian intelligence officials are predicting that India, China, Pakistan and Russia will all attempt to influence the outcome of this election. To try and get a sense of what we're up against, Owen wanted to get two different perspectives on this. Aengus Bridgman is the Director of the Media Ecosystem Observatory, a project that they run together at McGill University, and Nina Jankocwicz is the co-founder and CEO of the American Sunlight Project. Bridgman and Jankocwicz are two of the leading authorities on the problem of information manipulation. This episode was originally published on April 8, 2025.

My guest this week is Katie Harford Hogue, who joins me to chat about the wonderful album 'Julia Belle: The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project, Vol. 2'We discuss how the project came about, following the discovery of dozens of John Hartford's notebooks, kept between 1983 and 2001, full of as many as 4,000 original fiddle tunes he'd composed. That led to the book - 'John Hartford's Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes', followed by two albums, the second of which we're exploring today.Co-produced by Katie, with Sharon Gilchrist and Megan Lynch Chowning, 'Julia Belle' features a selection of John's original fiddle tunes, as well as some favourite songs, performed by some of the most beloved female artists in the Hartford-inspired bluegrass scene, including Rachel Baiman, Phoebe Hunt, Ginger Boatwright, Brittany and Natalie Haas, Deanie Richardson, Allison de Groot, Della Mae, The Price Sisters, Uncle Earl, Alison Brown, Missy Raines and Sierra Hull. It's a wonderful record and made for a fascinating conversation. In this episode of The Underdog Podcast, Dr. Jon Hogue shares his inspiring journey from a small-town upbringing to creating lasting change for at-risk youth and homeless families. Growing up in a rural Massachusetts town with a population of just 450, he developed resilience and a deep sense of community—qualities that would later define his mission. With a background in psychology, he spent decades working in residential treatment facilities, mentoring troubled youth, and eventually stepping into nonprofit leadership at NorthStar Family Services.Dr. Hogue recounts the challenges of transforming North Star, inheriting a shelter in a dangerous neighborhood with little funding and limited resources. Refusing to accept the status quo, he launched an ambitious plan to secure a safe, dignified space for homeless families. With remarkable tenacity and faith, he convinced a benefactor to purchase and renovate a building, laying the foundation for a model shelter. But his vision extended beyond temporary housing—he set out to tackle the root cause of family homelessness by developing affordable housing, a seven-year endeavor that raised $9 million for 15 subsidized apartments despite constant skepticism.Throughout the interview, Dr. Hogue emphasizes the power of persistence, strategic thinking, and treating every family with dignity. His journey is a testament to the impact of unwavering determination, strong leadership, and a relentless commitment to providing not just shelter, but hope and a pathway to self-sufficiency.Key Takeaways:The Power of Persistence: When faced with obstacles, find a way to go "over it, around it, or through it" rather than giving up.Strategic Networking: Building relationships and coalitions is essential for accessing resources and creating sustainable change.Vision Beyond Limitations: Don't let current resources or experience define what's possible; start with what's needed and figure out the path. The Importance of Housing Security: Safe, stable housing is fundamental to human development and family well-being.Maintaining High Standards: Never settle for "better than nothing" when serving vulnerable populations.John's story demonstrates how one person's refusal to accept impossibility can create lasting solutions to complex social problems, showing that with enough determination and the right team, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.Listen to this exciting episode. MINOT — For the first time ever we took the Plain Talk podcast on the road, to famed bar, restaurant, and political hangout Peacock Alley. We interviewed Senate Majority Leader David Hogue and House Minority Leader Zac Ista. We also interviewed a couple of former lawmakers, Jessica Bell and Erin Oban. The theme of the night? The legislature is going to have to change. Bell and Oban talked about how much the Legislature changed, both during their time and since. Things have become more performative and less productive. Hogue and Ista talked about the struggles to get through more than a thousand proposed bills while still giving each of them the scrutiny and consideration they deserve. All of this is happening as both North Dakota, and the nation, go through a sometimes baffling political realignment, and North Dakota, specifically, has a new term limits law for lawmakers looming. What can North Dakota do to ensure that the Legislature can continue to serve our state well, without veering off into the morass of dysfunction that's reality in Washington D.C.? We also talked about tough fights taking place in the current legislative session over sentencing, property taxes, and more. This episode is brought to you by the North Dakota Petroleum Foundation, providing education and outreach opportunities related to the petroleum industry, advancing quality of life initiatives, and promoting and enhancing the conservation heritage of North Dakota. Marie-Josée Hogue, head of the foreign interference inquiry, has delivered her final report, making sweeping recommendations for the federal government, while asserting that, despite allegations of some MPs possibly being foreign agents, there is no evidence of traitors in Ottawa, as discussed by National Post politics reporter Chris Nardi with Dave Breakenridge. Two years ago bombshell allegations emerged suggesting foreign actors were succeeding in influencing Canadian electoral contests and Canadian parliamentarians. Media reports suggested the Liberal government hadn't done enough to warn the public or even MPs about the matter, and a political debate emerged about how best to get to the bottom of it. After a series of false starts, it was Quebec Court of Appeal Justice Marie-Josée Hogue who was appointed to investigate and weigh in with findings and recommendations. Tuesday, Hogue issued her final report. While Hogue left some questions answered, she came to a very different finding on a key matter involving foreign interference and parliamentarians. This week on “It's Political,” we unpack what we learned from Hogue's report and what it says about where foreign interference threats now lie. Then NDP MP Charlie Angus joins us to discuss what he see as the next and most concerning phase of foreign interference. Hint: it's at your fingertips. In this episode: The Center for International Governance Innovation's senior fellow Wesley Wark, Timmins—James Bay NDP MP Charlie Angus, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Public Safety Minister David McGuinty. Today, we're looking at the response from the Alberta Medical Association and the Canadian Medical Association, which are both trying to shame Alberta's scathing report on the provincial response to the COVID-19. Plus, the Foreign Interference Commission wrapped up, with Justice Marie-Josée Hogue suggesting claims of "traitors" in Parliament were overblown and that "disinformation" is a powerful threat to Canada. And finally, could the federal government and provinces roll out something similar to CERB if a trade war breaks out with the U.S.? Well, with President Donald Trump insisting tariffs will start on February 1, B.C. Premier David Eby and Ontario Premier Doug Ford are both talking about a return to pandemic-era spending levels. After an 18-month long public inquiry, the final report on foreign interference in Canada has been released. Justice Marie-Josée Hogue's seven-volume report weighs in on allegations of parliamentarians participating in foreign interference, outlines concerning examples of when foreign states have tried to influence our elections and gives 51 recommendations on what to do about it. Steven Chase is the Globe's senior parliamentary reporter. His reporting over the years with colleague Robert Fife uncovered allegations of foreign interference before the inquiry even started. Today on the show, he breaks down the key findings of the public inquiry and what the report says should be done to counter further attempts to interfere with Canadian democracy. Questions? Comments? Ideas? Email us at thedecibel@globeandmail.com
Justice Marie-Josée Hogue found no evidence of traitors in parliament, but her final report on foreign interference highlights several other threats to Canada's democracy. We unpack the vulnerabilities she's identified, from disinformation on social media to party leaders who have so far refused to get security clearance.
Justice Marie-Josée Hogue's final report on foreign interference in Canada dismissed allegations of treason by parliamentarians but highlighted troubling conduct and foreign influence attempts. Justice Marie-Josée Hogue's final report on foreign interference in Canada dismissed allegations of treason by parliamentarians but highlighted troubling conduct and foreign influence attempts. She emphasized the need for better safeguards, including protecting diaspora communities and improving election security. Of her 51 recommendations, about half could be implemented quickly, potentially before the expected spring federal election. These include a hotline for reporting interference, monitoring disinformation, and requiring political parties to track members' citizenship or residency. On our live New Year's Eve special, four guests in separate hours gave us their thoughts and predictions for 2025 and how the new year will unfold: psychic John Russell, psychic medium Mark Christopher Nelson, Nostradamus authority John Hogue, and spiritual medium Erika Gabriel. First up, John Russell predicted a year filled with heightened spiritual energy and opportunities for communication with the deceased. He encouraged listeners to explore various methods for connecting with the Other Side, such as via EVP, Ouija boards, and crystal balls. The potential for 2025 is "just going to be off the charts," he remarked, adding that he sees breakthroughs in medical treatments for infectious diseases and chronic respiratory conditions, as well as an increase in UFO sightings and whistleblower disclosures. When discussing global events, Russell suggested that the ongoing war in Ukraine may see resolution by year's end, with a significant event around June.In the second hour, medium Mark Christopher Nelson characterized 2025 as "the year of disclosures." He foresees significant revelations about UFOs and government operations, stating, "I feel like there's going to be some kind of ground-shaking, mind-altering disclosures." Bird flu will most likely not have the same impact as COVID at all, he said. Nelson also mentioned potential attacks on American soil, a short period of time when the White House will be emptied, and a "nerve-wracking" vision of "a plane falling into the ocean" or a large body of water near Washington or Maryland. He also shared some personal forecasts for George Noory including that his radio studio would be revamped.Next, prophecy expert John Hogue predicted 2025 would be the "year of revolutions and surprises," hinting at potential breakthroughs in understanding UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Reflecting on historical predictions, he noted the accuracy of American seers from the 1800s, particularly regarding the fragmentation of the U.S. He suggested that the upcoming years may bring about a second, more peaceful revolution, driven by a desire for change and innovation. Hogue expressed cautious optimism, stating, "I am more hopeful about 2025 than I was for 2024," and he believes that in this new year, we'll more likely than not navigate the current global tensions without succumbing to catastrophe. In addition to speaking about her work with spirit guides and clients, medium Erika Gabriel shared her insights for the year ahead. She foresees a mix of highs and lows, particularly in weather patterns, noting, "I see a lot of water and a lot of wind," which could significantly impact North America. Gabriel encouraged listeners to prepare for potential severe weather, advising, "If you're in a place where there's lots of hurricanes and tornadoes, check your insurance." On the job market, she was optimistic, saying, "I do see more people getting a job," but she expressed concern over grocery prices not going down. Additionally, she warned about the increasing sophistication of telephone scams, especially from those claiming to be from banks.
