Welcome to Season 13 of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, where we delve into the fascinating intersection of brain science, emotional intelligence, and educational training for enhanced well-being and performance. This episode features Sifu Boggie, also known as Paul Brighton, who brings over 40 years of expertise in qigong, a discipline involving breath work and self-healing techniques. As stress and anxiety reach unprecedented levels worldwide, Sifu Boggie shares how qi-gong can help alleviate ailments like chronic pain, migraines, and even mental health issues. Join host Andrea Samadi in an enlightening discussion about the role of mindfulness and meditation in managing stress and maintaining mental peace. Sifu Boggie, introduced to martial arts at the age of 12, guides listeners through practical exercises for achieving emotional and physical balance, including breathing techniques and posture corrections that can be easily integrated into daily life. Discover how understanding and altering your energy can bring about transformational changes, fostering a stronger connection between mind and body. For today's episode #362, our next guest caught my eye as I noticed that my stress levels have reached some high numbers recently, with the data I see from my Whoop wearable device. Watch our interview here https://youtu.be/lYexvaGU8M0 For today's episode #362, we meet with Sifu Boggie, where we looked at: ✔ How Paul Brighton (Sifu Boggie) discovered this pathway from Chaos to Calm, when he was 12 years old. ✔ What classes does he teach, and how does he know how to help someone, or guide them towards improved health? ✔ How would Sifu help me with persistent neck pain? ✔ How can we learn to open our minds to learn deeper truths, that can help propel us forward? While my average daily stress has decreased by 12% over the past 6 months (Whoop measurements) with the average amount of daily stress I'm facing dropping from close to 4 hours/day to 3 hours and 25 minutes, I know I still occasionally see days where daily stress hits well over 6 hours/day. I know there's got to be something ELSE I can be doing to mitigate this stress, since I know that dis-ease in the body, leads straight to disease. It's clear that globally, we have reached unpresented times with anxiety, stress and depression. I can't be the only one who wonders what ELSE can I be doing. We know that: 1 in 5 Americans suffers from a mental illness (NIMH). Anxiety disorders are the highest reported mental health issue in the US with 42.5 million Americans claiming to suffer from this illness. (Mental Health America). Mental illnesses start showing symptoms by age 14 (National Alliance on Mental Illness), About 1 in 4 American adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, and one in 10 will suffer from a depressive illness, such as major depression or bipolar disorder (Johns Hopkins). 10.7% of the world suffers from some form of mental illness. (Our World in Data). STATISTICS FROM https://www.thezebra.com/resources/research/mental-health-statistics/  While looking at my own stress one day, I received an introduction to our next guest, who will share the knowledge he has gathered over the past 40 years, where he has learned how to help others help themselves with ailments like... Anxiety, Stress, Chronic Pain, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Crohn's Disease, Migraines, ME, MS, Arthritis, poor circulation, back problems and so much more. He does this by teaching us Qi Gong (Breath work exercises) and self-healing techniques that will help you to maintain your body, mind and consciousness. Without further ado, let's meet Sifu Boggie (Paul Brighton) from the UK (where I was born) and see what he can teach us with his wisdom and knowledge from being immersed in this work, since he was 12 years old. Welcome Sifu Boggie! Thank you for coming on the podcast today! Where exactly have I reached you today? (I was born in Worthing, Sussex).  INTRO:  Sifu, I listened to some of your past podcast episodes, and I enjoyed learning through your experiences. I do want to start by going back in time to when you were age 12, and met someone who saw that you were talented, when you felt like you didn't belong. Can you start with explaining how you found this pathway to help others understand themselves better at a young age? Q1: What does your name mean and how does it tie into our podcast where we work on learning strategies to be the best versions of ourselves? Q2: I can see your talent and what makes you truly unique and I'm jumping at the chance to speak with you, to ask you questions for your perspective, but what has been your experience having a talent that takes ancient practices that can hold the secret for healing modern ailments? Can you break down WHAT exactly it is that you do in your classes, and how each class is tied to support a specific ailment of injury? Qi Class: Qigong for Health, Fitness and Well-being, what ever your ailment or injury There is a Qigong for it... Jing Class: Neigong ( Qigong Yoga) great for Stretching the body, Strengthening the tendons and releasing trauma/ PTSD/ Depression... Shen Class:  Shengong ( Qigong Meditation) lots of different variations, especially "the Island" a Daoist Meditation to heal mind, body and Spirit plus other Energy Meditation styles... Eastern Reiki Class: The Traditional Version of Reiki has Hatsurie Ho ( Japanese Qigong), Kotodama ( Japanese Mantra), and Reiju ( Empowerments) done as a Weekly Class so you build and grow the energy and Traditionally Symbols were not used. DragonDog Shaman Reiki: A particular Version of Shun Qi Shen ( Chinese Reiki) based on the Daoist Shaman practice, this has 3 Classes... Theory, Practical and Lightcode... Q2B: So if I have pain in my neck, that's persistent and always there, how would you help me to eliminate this pain in my neck? I ask, as it's been this way for me for over 20 years, and I've tried everything! Chiropractic work, massage, oils, saunas, and even hypnotherapy (which I would have to say is highly effective). What would you say to me about this persistent pain in my neck and how would YOU solve it? Q3: I know a lot of this involves the mind. I heard you say something that made me think a bit, and I wonder if you can explain how you interpret when Hong-Kong, American martial arts and actor, the late Bruce Lee said “it's like a finger pointing away to the moon” urging us to NOT concentrate on our finger, or we will miss “all that heavenly glory” and that we must NOT think, but learn to FEEL more. How does this quote tie in here? Learn to listen to our body and feel more, rather than get stuck focusing on (our finger) or whatever it is that hurts us in our body? What would you say here? Q4: So here's another quote I heard you say that I just love. I connected with it as I worked for 6 years in the motivational speaking industry and met some of the greats in this industry, right alongside those who had all risen to the top in their careers. Most that I met were open to learning NEW strategies and ideas for success, that took them to these great heights, and they didn't have to be scientifically proven, they just had to work. You mentioned a quote by Rockefeller that said “millionaires don't use astrology, billionaire do” suggesting that more successful individuals, particularly those at the highest wealth levels, may leverage astrology for strategic insights beyond simple fate beliefs. Can you explain how this quote ties into your work? Q5: Before my next question, I would love it if you could give us your take on Energy 101 and what we should all know about energy fields, and frequencies? I've mentioned this concept on a few different episodes where I talk about how we are all spiritual beings, with an intellect, living in a physical body (EP 67[i]) and that we must change our frequency to move to different levels of vibration. How would YOU explain this image and concept? Q6: Since we now can see how important energy is, in Arizona, where I live, we can find stores on reading our energy, our aura (I've done this recently) or classes on how to bend a spoon, psychokinesis and dowsing (all classes that I took the FIRST year I moved here over 24 years ago). Can you tell me what you learned from your work with Uri Geller years ago that might open our listener's eyes to different techniques for success that you have seen either yourself or others use to give them a razor's edge for success? Q7: Ok, another quote here from Nikolas Tesla “magic is science not yet understood.” I've been working hard to make the connection with neuroscience and some of those age old success principles that I saw working in the seminar industry back in the late 1990s. Our most downloaded episode is a 4-part series on Applying The Silva Method[ii] for Increased Intuition, Creativity and Focus. My favorite quote from this series is that “once we learn to use our minds to train it, it will do some astounding things for us, as you will soon see.” What kind of magic have you seen over the years with people you work with who have learned to train their mind (like Bruce Lee was so well known for?). Q8: In the Silva Method, he has this activity where we learn how to see things on the “screen of our mind.” What have you learned from your study of ancient physicists about developing our minds, or our “third eye” and why is this advanced awareness important if we want to take better control our our health and wellness, as well as our success, in the future?   Q9: This has been a lot, and I could keep asking you questions, but I wonder, “where do we begin?” I didn't know that Yin/Yang (dark/light) means Tai Chi or that Dao means “the path, or the way.” Can you highlight the best way forward for someone who notices they are off balance, like me, and how to get started on a better way forward? Q10: Have I missed anything important? Sifu, I want to thank you very much for meeting with me, to open my mind up further with your knowledge and wisdom that you have collected and implemented since you were a young boy. I'm grateful to have had this chance to speak with you. Where can people learn more about your classes and workshops? Lowan H. Stewart shares his research results and personal professional experience with therapeutic use of psychedelics (ketamine, psylocibin, LSD, MDMA) in treating depression, PTSD, anxiety, addiction, pain, OCD etc.    His research is financed by the Norwegian state. This isn't a hippie thing anymore. It is hard core facts and research done at Harvard and Yale.    He was demotivated working with the symptoms of his patients and started seeking ways to deal with the root cause of peoples mental health conditions.  Depression in the leading cause of disability in the world. 1 million kill themselves every year. And that is just the people going through with it and succeeding.  That is more than the amount of people dying from war and natural disasters combined.  10 times more (10.millon) tried to kill themselves.  10 times more (100.millon) want to kill themselves, bit didn't try. That's just depression.   Lowan want to prevent these numbers. Deal with the burden and river of suffering which just keep on pouring, because we treat it with a bucket instead of fixing the leakage, the cause of the running water. The leakage of the sinking boat.   What does the research of Harvard and Yale say about the use of psychedelics in therapy?    More effective than electro shots. Long lasting effects. Immediate effects. Less side-effects. None addictive. No need for continues medication.   How this treatment helps your body heal itself, at the core. The body is doing the work, the medicine (psychedelics) are just there to help you find the answers you need.    You find Lowan and more information about his Ketamine clinic in Oslo here: https://www.axon.no/    If you want to read more about the research: https://www.sykehuset-ostfold.no/nyheter/vitalt-bruk-av-psykedelika-i-behandling-av-depresjon/  https://www.psykedeliskvitenskap.no/blank  https://www.sykehuset-innlandet.no/fag-og-forskning/kurs-for-helsepersonell/ketaminkonferansen-2024/  https://www.forskning.no/medisin-og-helse-psykiske-lidelser/hvorfor-far-ikke-alvorlig-deprimerte-pasienter-denne-behandlingen-som-forskning-viser-at-har-god-effekt/2205502  https://independent.academia.edu/LowanStewart  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7311646/  https://magazine.hms.harvard.edu/articles/altering-perceptions-psychedelics  https://news.yale.edu/2021/07/05/psychedelic-spurs-growth-neural-connections-lost-depression  https://medicine.yale.edu/psychiatry/research/programs/clinical_people/psychedelic/research/  https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/resources/article/petrie-flom-center-launches-POPLAR

During the Vietnam War, American soldiers and sailors manned the Mobile Riverine Force (MRF) assault boats that patrolled the Mekong Delta. The Riverines were key to the success of Allied forces in the Delta during the 1968 Tet offensive, and were frequently met with hostile fire from enemy forces. Decades later, clinical psychologist Marilyn Luber would aid the recovery of a Riverine veteran from PTSD. Using eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) she guided him in dampening the severity of his trauma. “He said it feels like the log jam in his heart was opened,” Ms. Luber recalls during our interview. “He also felt like there was a younger part who had a different perspective, who was trying to help him understand what had happened.” Ms. Luber has been practicing EMDR since 1992. She is the author and editor of nine books on this interactive psychotherapy that, in part, uses bilateral stimulation (usually of the eyes) to allow traumatic memory to be stored in a healthier and more adaptive way. Since its inception several decades ago, EMDR has helped tens of millions of people across the world recover from psychological trauma. Alongside this, it is also used to treat anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive, and other mental health disorders. On #VitalSigns, host Brendon Fallon asks Dr. Marilyn Luber PhD to share her experience of treating patients with EMDR and her insights on why it enables their recovery in so many cases. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Terrell Green had a tough upbringing. His mom suffered from addiction though, and he lost his father at an early age. He grew up listening to comedians like Richard Pryor, who was a major inspiration for him. He was also a top athlete coming out of Edison High School and went to Fresno City College. This is where it turned bad for him, unfortunately, as he saw his best friend get murdered in front of him. After that incident, he was depressed and suicidal. He stopped playing sports. The guilt weighed on him, as he felt responsible for putting his friend in that situation. He really struggled for a long time, but he was finally able to break out of it. One day, he saw some comedy videos that inspired him to do the same thing, and he was able to find therapy in comedy. He would create characters of people he would see in his neighborhood, for better or worse, and show people what his life was like through this distorted comedic lens. His comedy videos ended up going viral on Tik Tok, Youtube & social media sites and started getting the attention of some pretty big names. than legendary rapper and entertainment mogul Snoop Dogg, who reposted one of his videos to his millions of followers. He started getting feedback that he was helping other people going through the same problems as he was, and this inspired him to write in his journal. Finally, he put his plan in motion to start writing his book, "Against All Odds: A Story About How I Became". After that major release, Terrell was able to reach a large number of people struggling with the same things he was, which in turn helped everyone help each other. The feedback on his book has been nothing but positive, and Terrell wants to keep that dialogue with his fans open & make sure anyone that needs help can get the support they need. Josh was deployed in Korea, and then was stationed in Kansas to set up the brigade. Josh was again deployed in Iraq, where he sustained a head injury from the shock wave of an indirect fire attack. He suffered from TBI, post-concussion syndrome and headaches, which he still experiences to this day. Josh identifies suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Josh made headlines in 2017 after he rescued a stray cat, Scout. Josh attributes Scout for saving his life. Click the link to watch the heartwarming film of the mutual rescue between Josh and Scout. Josh currently seeks support from the VA and counsels Veterans at the VA. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury. The most common type of head trauma from recent conflicts are blast wave injuries. Two of the most prevalent problems reported by military personnel following traumatic brain injury are headache and photosensitivity (light sensitivity), which commonly occur together in migraine-like headaches. The VA provides care and support for Veterans suffering from TBI. All Veterans who served in combat are screened for TBI. Treatment options for TBI include cognitive, speech, physical, and occupational therapy, coinciding with medication and assistive devices. Click the link to learn more about TBI treatment at the VA. VA also offers counseling services to Veterans to support treatments of related conditions.             In the second half of episode six, Levi and Brandon interview Rob Otto. Listeners will hear about Rob's early life, career in the military, and life after service and his experience with mental health. Rob discusses PTSD among Veterans and suicide prevention at the VA. Rob Otto is an Iowa native and Air Force Veteran. He began his military career in the Air Force ROTC and received his undergraduate degree in Sociology at the University of Iowa. Rob served in active duty for six years as a Captain, where he was a personnel officer leading teams, project management and administrative work. He attended the police academy and worked as a police officer. Rob is now the Suicide Prevention Coordinator and a social worker at the Iowa City VA where he counsels Veterans. The VA is dedicated to changing the stigma surrounding mental health. Approximately 20% of Veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans can receive treatment for PTSD at the VA through trauma-focused psychotherapies and antidepressant medication. The VA tailors treatment regiments specific to the Veteran's key concerns and needs. PTSD often coincides with other mental health illnesses.

Observed each July and originally designated as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, BIPOC Mental Health Month highlights the unique mental health challenges and needs of historically disenfranchised or oppressed racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Black and Indigenous people and other people of color (BIPOC) experience a broad spectrum of ongoing discrimination, oppression, and inequity rooted in America's colonialist history, all of which foster both collective and individual trauma in those communities. Counselors, therapists and other mental health professionals are essential to promoting the mental health and well-being of people in BIPOC communities and addressing the systemic discrepancies in quality of and access to care for these individuals. By providing counselors with the support, education, and professional resources needed to serve BIPOC clients, we can work together to create deep multicultural competence and provide effective care for the mental health of every individual. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Struggling with PTSD? Check out my 100% free and helpful training here: https://www.overcomingptsd.info/go About a year ago I teamed up with The Mighty to put together a PTSD Depression Masterclass. The Masterclass went so well, I actually still use the exact training to show my clients how to beat PTSD Depression. The reason I'm writing this is because since Covid-19 started, I've had a lot of people reach out for resources on depression. People saying things like... "I feel more hopeless than ever" "I don't have energy to do even the most basic of things" and "I feel like I'm fighting myself everyday and I don't want to fight all the time" If you feel this way the good news is you're not alone and I cover all of that in the Masterclass Here's exactly what I cover: • How to generate energy from thin air • How to ensure you get out of bed every day • How to build hope when all seems lost • How to bring joy back into your life • How to face the resistance of depression I've been wanting to share this for a while but had to get a few "okay's" before I released it to the public Watch The Mighty training to learn how you can beat PTSD Depression so you can stop fighting yourself and start living! I believe in you always, Kayleen P.S. Here's what one of my clients said about it just the other day in our Facebook community: "I started with the Relief tools section and I think it was in the Depression module...It made a huge difference! ...gradually it got easier and after a few days it felt good. If you haven't tried these things, I encourage you to do so. They really work!"

People struggling with treatment-resistant PTSD may soon have a new course of care: MDMA. When used alongside psychotherapy, the synthetic substance in the drug more commonly known as ecstasy or molly is currently in phase three clinical trials. It's even been given “breakthrough designation” by the FDA, a status reserved for treatments with significant potential to improve patient outcomes. But MDMA isn't the only kind of party drug experiencing interest for therapeutic potential. Psilocybin, the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms", is being evaluated for its potential in alleviating depression. Guided ayahuasca trips are a growing trend, especially amongst Brooklyn and Silicon Valley elites.

Trauma is part of our daily lives with heavy doses on the nightly news, and whether we realize it or not, we have all experienced trauma in our own lives. Protecting ourselves and healing from trauma has become a necessity for all of us. In addition, our communities are only as safe and secure as the health of our first responders. Like veterans, first responders are constantly exposed to trauma which leads to high rates of suicide, PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, spousal abuse and other stress related problems. My guest says that after seven years as a police officer: “I remember being at my step-daughter's eighth birthday party. As I sat alone watching others, I suddenly realized that I felt nothing. I did not feel connected to anyone; I did not feel any happiness--just indifference and an eerie emptiness inside.” He chose to create ways for first responders, and all of us, to develop a bulletproof spirit. Please join us Thursday to learn how to heal your mind and heart.

Sometimes traumas occur that aren’t discussed or supported in the ways they should be. It takes some brave soul to forge the path in changing the narrative for those who follow. Today’s show is an important conversation of a personal story of egg donation, what can go wrong, and the emotional trauma that might follow.  Meghan Coltrane is a Licensed Professional Counselor in perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Her private practice is in Asheville, NC. She’s here to share her personal experience of being an egg donor, which led her into the field of perinatal emotional health. I’m putting a sensitivity notice on this episode for anyone who has experienced obstetrical complications or trauma related to a procedure. This kind of complication is very rare, but it CAN happen, so we want to bring awareness to it and learn, understand, and support people through all aspects of their reproductive and mental health. Show Highlights: Meghan’s rare complications are an uncommon experience in egg donation When she was 25, she applied to be an egg donor and went through the required testing Within days of being approved, two different couples had chosen her as their egg donor and she prepared for her next cycle with the necessary medications and many ultrasounds Who needs an egg donor? Any couple seeking to do IVF without their own viable eggs 20 eggs were retrieved during the procedure and her mother drove her home to rest, with her plan being to return to work the next day She tried to sleep, then woke up, and fainted on her way to the bathroom The on-call nurse told her to drink more water She went back to sleep, but kept waking up with increasing abdominal pain; it became sharp, like nothing she’d ever felt before The on-call nurse prescribed Tylenol with codeine Later, her roommate took her to the ER, where she was given IV fluids and was admitted for 3 days The diagnosis was ovarian torsion, in which the ovaries were twisting on themselves and severe bleeding was occurring Throughout her hospital stay, her caregivers were always on guard for the need for emergency surgery, which would have meant the removal of her ovaries After her discharge, she visited 6 different doctors and began having anxiety, terrors, and emotional issues Her physical recovery took 1-2 weeks, but the emotional healing took much longer Meghan was anxious, terrified, scared, and filled with irrational fears and repeated nightmares Her body responded as though she had been through a sexual assault, with her even being terrified of every man she came into contact with Why she hunkered down and shut everyone out of her life She had no energy, was exhausted, and lost a lot of weight She saw her therapist and went to Yoga for Trauma classes She saw a psychiatrist for medication to help her eat and sleep During the first year, she threw herself into self-healing and did TRE (trauma releasing exercises) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with her primary therapist The fertility clinic kept calling, asking her to donate again, even though she had told them she was done Why she felt treated “like a machine that gave them their product” There was no discussion about the hormonal effects or the possible mental effects of the process or the risks Meghan’s desire is not to discourage egg donation, but to encourage trauma-informed care How Meghan has started doing trauma-informed care training How she wouldn’t do it again, but gained a lot of insight in how to care for herself and set boundaries The financial benefits of egg donation, taxes, and why it’s not worth it Her official diagnosis: anxiety, depression, and PTSD What Meghan wants others to know about this process and the impact on perinatal mental health Meghan’s advice: “Be open to healing and surround yourself with those who respect your boundaries.”   Resources: www.meghancoltrane.com www.weareeggdonors.com
