Quincy Delight Jones Junior was born in Chicago in 1933. At High School in Seattle he became an accomplished trumpeter, and then focused on music with a scholarship to Boston's Berklee College of Music. After college he worked with a number of orchestras and bands until in the 1960s becoming Frank Sinatra's arranger and conductor, notably leading the recording of the 1966 live album "Sinatra at the Sands" with the Count Basie Orchestra. A background with big bands, orchestras, and jazz followed him through his career and into our disco era where Quincy's signature production features bold brass, lush strings, hypnotic percussion and complex vocal arrangements. He met Michael Jackson when they both worked on the film "The Wiz". Michael invited Quincy to produce his upcoming solo album, but the record label objected, saying Quincy was "too jazzy". Michael insisted, and the result, "Off The Wall" propelled them both to mega stardom.Here I've gathered my favourite Quincy produced, arranged and written tracks which have themselves already been lovingly reproduced by disco leaders Dr Packer, The Reflex, Loshmi, Pete Le Freq and more, plus, unusually for me, some original recordings, which itself is very telling. A nudisco celebration of the music of Philadelphia International Records and the role it played in the development of disco. Founded in 1971 by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the label's original vision was to rival Berry Gordy's Motown organisation. Gamble and Huff were also responsible for writing many of the label's greatest hits, which often featured their own in-house orchestra MFSB (or Mother Father Sister Brother). Gamble and Huff have also been activists supporting the black community and improving south Philadelphia. They created Universal Companies which in 2003 partnered with others in a $100 million plan to construct and renovate 400 homes. Together they have written over 3,000 songs producing 175 gold and platinum records, making them some of the most prolific songwriters of all time. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of Salsoul Records, perhaps the most recogniseably sampled catalogue in the history of disco. The label name came from the US urban latino community who were listening to a mash-up of salsa and soul, and it was established by brothers Joseph, Kenneth and Stan Cayre.  They created a disco genre which was influenced by Philadelphia International, in fact they hired some of Philadelphia's musicians to help develop their own signature uplifting orchestral strings and brass sound. That sound is perhaps best exemplified by the many tracks recorded by The Salsoul Orchestra, who also backed many of their other artists. Thanks for downloading another two hours of disco: classics, edits, remixes and brand new tunes. And here in London we've been enjoying some spectacularly hot summer days and nights, which has made me feel like partying more than usual, if that's possible! Sadly we're still not able to gather and groove, but we can come together in spirit with beautiful uplifting music as our unifying force. And so, here goes: don't miss Crackazat's creative use of Earth Wind & Fire accapellas in "Fly away". It's so good it sounds like Maurice White might have made it himself. Billy Porter makes an appearance on "Finally ready" with The Shapeshifters, and I love what Kornum Karma have done in their edit of Change's "Angel in your pocket": I dare you not to dance! There's a trippy disco house vibe happening in the Havana Hustlers' "You and I forever". And in this mix I've picked out a few of those epic extended disco tracks including The Constellation Orchestra's "Perfect love affair" here given an edit by Alien Disco Sugar. See if you can sing along to the annoyingly-well syncopated chorus "We've got - a per-fect love aff-air". Then there's The GB Experience's "Disco Extravaganza" which "borrows" from so many discotheque monsters including Cerrone, and runs for more than 13 minutes. And at over 12 minutes the USA European Connection's "There's a way into my heart" is another discotheque monster. Back in the 1970s did club DJs play these 12 inchers in their entirety? If I'd been on the dancefloor I'd have had to have a sit down or at least a trip to the bar and a loo break in between! Hello from a hot and sunny London, and I've just celebrated taking our first steps out of lockdown by going up into the loft and digging out a box of 12" vinyl disco classics. I've chosen the lesser-played versions of these mega-hits: some from the original days of disco, and some which have been produced more recently. Overall I feel the set has quite a silky, orchestral feel to it, including Joey Negro's delicately balanced rendering of strings, pianos, vocal harmonies and loving breakdowns of the O'Jays "I love music", Bebu Silvetti's crazy keyboard skills and unrivaled disco percussion on his "Spring rain", and my personal set favourite, Dimitri from Paris' epic cinematic Super Disco Orchestra remix of Odyssey's "Native New Yorker". It's an amazing instrumental version, and I was tempted to drop in some of the vocals just for old times' sake, but - well what do you think? This track makes me so happy I just cry every time I hear it. Seriously, I've got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes right now! Maybe because I was lucky enough to meet Odyssey when I was just a teenager. Somehow I had managed to persuade them to let me interview them for the hospital radio station where I volunteered. They'd done a gig at Nottingham's Rock City and I waited in the foyer of their hotel well into the early hours of the morning to meet them. I'm still so star-struck I've got no idea what I spoke to them about in the interview, but I recall they were charming. Thanks Billie, Lilian and Louisa. Here in London we're into the third week of isolation, and thought I'd try and improve the mood by mixing up some great disco tracks so that we can all safely party on at home. Some of my personal favourites include our set starter, Bob Sinclar's collaboration with Robbie Williams, given a total disco makeover by Discoslap; Again & again by DJ Mark Brickman; Arthur Prysock's "When love is new" lovingly edited by DJ Laurel, a great track with a great pedigree with Gamble & Huff as writers and John Davis on production - lush. And there's a couple of tracks that pre-date the disco era including Frankie Valli's "The Night" which in its original 1972 form was a massive Northern Soul hit and features here slowed a little and disconated by Lolita. Then there's the legendary Dusty Springfield and her 1969 hit "Son of a preacher man" given the 4/4 treatment and a new funky bassline by Jakob Trice. Welcome to a new year, a new decade, and a brand new disco set, with over three hours of dance-floor classics; disco originals, remixes, edits and more. Every time I hear "I love music" by the O'Jays I get goosebumps - the arrangement, the vocal harmonies and the percussion are just perfect. And did Chicago - ranked by Billboard as one of the biggest rock bands of all time - imagine they'd spawn a host of disco choons with their funky horn section? (Here it is "On my mind" by - Algrthm). Apparently it's a Barry White sample that makes Future Funk's "Wildberry Tracks" so sublime, and Barry himself is up later with a re-edit of his Love Unlimited Orchestra classic. Hello. It's been a while. How've you been? Well it's been a very busy summer for me and whilst I've missed you, it does mean I've been gathering loads of great tunes to share with you. Welcome to March's musical expedition into the world of disco. Over two and a half hours of 4/4 dancefloor monsters, starting with an original gay club classic from the eighties and the only chart hit for broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph. Better known for her Dreamgirls performance, Sheryl managed to take "In the evening" to number 64 in the UK in January 1985. Listen out for a storming edit of Rose Royce's "Is it love you're after" by San Fran Disko. Later you'll hear the unmistakeable sound of Philadelphia-born and long-time Three Degrees lead Sheila Ferguson who has re-started her career in UK reality TV and now lives in the UK in Maidstone, Berkshire. In this mix she features on the Disco Socks' edit of "Giving up, giving in" from their 1978 Giorgio Moroder era album "New dimensions". What would we do without Joey Negro eh? You'll find his hallmark on several edits and mixes in this set not least of which is his homage to Christopher Cross' "Ride like the wind".
